Attraction Review:

City Sightseeing

Reviewed by Audrey Valée & Fabienne Glatow 12th February

If you have arrived in Oxford and you don’t know the city, make sure you jump on board one of fabulous City Sightseeing buses – they’re hard to miss in their stunning red and green designs! All you have to do is visit the City Centre and climb aboard – or if you prefer a green bus, take the Guide Friday Green bus. Take a seat downstairs (30 seats) or upstairs (45 seats) for only 1 stop, 8 stops or the entire tour, the 24h or 48h tickets give you the opportunity to travel within the city whenever you want. It is possible to get on the bus or stop as many times as you wish during the validity of your ticket. Hop on and hop off at one of the 19 stops allocated in the city centre. Thanks to the bus tour, it’s really easy to discover all the key sites and attractions of Oxford. In an hour you can absorb Oxford’s main streets, our beautiful colleges, Oxford Castle, historic museums and the odd pub! If you don’t speak or understand English (which means you probably can’t read this!) don’t worry! Your non English speaking friends and family can choose the language they would prefer to hear the tour in and sit back and take it all in in French, Spanish, Chinese and more (13 in total). Enjoy the short recorded commentaries about the history of the buildings, places or quarters. Kids needn’t feel left out as commentaries for children are now available on tour. You can buy your ticket online for both the red and green buses, from the bus, the City Sightseeing outlet in Oxford Rail Station or in various locations in the city. Don’t hesitate to combine your tour ticket with other city attractions such as Carfax Tower or a river cruise on the Thames. There’s no better way to see Oxford.

Mozart

Thursday 2nd April: Serenade for Strings No. 13 in G major, K. 525, ‘Eine kleine Nachtmusik’. Concerto for 2 Pianos and Orchestra No. 10 in E flat major, K. 365. Symphony No. 38 in D major, K. 504, ‘Prague’ Maria João Pires piano Julien Brocal piano Marios Papadopoulos conductor This all-Mozart concert begins with his popular four-movement serenade ‘Eine kleine Nachtmusik’ before one of the world’s most celebrated pianists, Maria João Pires, partners with her star pupil Julien Brocal in the Concerto for Two Pianos − a work Mozart himself would have played with his sister, Nannerl. In the ‘Prague’, one hears the effect of expanding musical horizons on Mozart’s idea of what a symphony could be. In virtually every bar he is audibly straining at the limits of what his invention, his orchestra, and the symphony can do. A soloist of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, Julien Brocal is currently involved in Pires’s Partitura project − a unique launch pad for young musicians, offering a new perspective on the function of music. Art Article:

Christ Church Picture Gallery Christ Church is unique among the Oxford and Cambridge colleges in possessing an important collection of Old Master paintings and drawings. In 1765, General John Guise, a soldier and art collector, bequeathed his collection of over 200 paintings and almost 2000 drawings to his former college. This extraordinary gift enabled Christ Church to introduce art into Oxford education without the necessity to travel to Italy or to gain access to stately homes (which held the majority of art collections in the country). At that date the collection was unequalled by any other Oxford institution. The collection is strongest in Italian art, from the 14th to the 18th century. Some of the early religious panels are painted by now-anonymous masters, but they allow the viewer to trace the beginnings of the professional ‘artist’ as we know him. Later works in the collection include paintings by highly-acclaimed artists such as Filippino Lippi, Tintoretto, Veronese, Annibale Carracci, and Salvator Rosa. There are also some remarkable works by northern painters such as Anthony van Dyck, Frans Hals, and Hugo van der Goes. General John Guise’s extraordinary bequest is now celebrating its 250th anniversary, and while the whole Picture Gallery is testimony to his benefaction, an upcoming exhibition (Undisputed Masterpieces, 3 June – 5 October 2015) will draw special attention to his collection of drawings. They include some of the most important Old Master drawings in the country, with sheets by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Bellini, Titian, Holbein, Dürer, Raphael, Rubens, and many more. Another exhibition (250 Reasons for 250 Years, 12 June – 5 October 2015) will celebrate the anniversary in a collaborative format: an installation of 250 cards to be displayed in the Picture Gallery. Blank cards were sent to members of the Christ Church community, to artists, to scholars, to students, and others—with the request that they write down their thoughts about why art matters, why we should celebrate art benefactors like Guise, and why those who preserve, research, present, and create art still matter today. We will display 250 of these cards in the Picture Gallery, one for each year since the Guise bequest. Our current exhibitions include Raphael’s Legacy: Italian Design in the 16th Century (12 February - 25 May 2015) and Up Close and Personal - A Portrait of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (19 March - 31 May 2015). Please stop by and visit us soon!

Sports Article:

An Evening with Eddie Pepperell

Written by Colin Rosser 12th March

With a packed audience of over 150 expectant golfers waiting for their home grown star, Frilford Heath Golf Club put on a splendid show for their local boy. Eddie was a junior here from the age of 11 and went through the ranks winning Junior Gold Medal and the Gold Medal. He went through the talent pathway in BB&O eventually into the England squad and then GB&I. Regarding club selection Eddie normally has a feel for the right club to hit, but listens to caddie Jamie Herbert if he points out that all the trouble is if you hit it long or if he needs to carry a ridge on the green for example. Eddie uses Taylormade clubs and tends to change his driver and putter more than anything else. Although he was hitting his five wood well but not quite long enough he seemed to hit his three wood more ‘steamly’. To get the right club he put a four wood head on the five wood’s shaft and got the result he wanted. Eddie’s putting stats have improved every year for the last three years. IMG Management Company now looks after Eddie, where he has a good agreement that puts his own interests at the heart of the relationship. They were also instrumental in Eddie getting a clothing sponsorship with Wolsey. Although 2015 started brightly, a bad dose of flu knocked Eddie back which meant that he missed the next two tournaments. However he is in action again on March 26th in Morocco, where he is hoping to improve on his current position of 36 in The Race to Dubai. He ended 2014 very strongly and had six top ten finishes in his last fourteen tournaments. He was asked about the ups and downs of a professional golfer, of missing cuts and the frustration it caused and almost always after such an event he would go back to basics. Both Eddie and Jamie agreed that the way players and caddies are treated at tournaments has improved remarkably and they both thought that the event at Wentworth was the best of the year. This was closely followed by the last four events in the Race to Dubai. I am sure we will all be following Eddie’s career as closely as possible and wish him every success.

Patisserie Review:

Gatineau Patisserie

Written by Audrey Vallée 16th March

Coming from France, it was nice to have the opportunity to meet Fabien Gautier, the manager and company director who working with Hervé Gatineau, the owner of this wonderful patisserie and bakery in Oxford. Because almost all of Gatineau’s team is French and as the smell of bread perfumed the entire store, I could feel at home for a while…! After 10 years working at Maison Blanc, Hervé Gatineau wanted to have his own business and decided to open his bakery in 2006. His main goal was to create the French touch in Oxford, in a local area where it is enjoyable to live, and Summertown seemed to be the perfect place. A few years ago, the team decided to arrange the place differently and to open up the kitchen directly to the customers. It is now possible for the public to watch the team making their bread and patisseries whilst they choose what to buy – it’s a great mix. They wanted to show the clientele that everything is made on site; especially that it is cooked the same day by professional chefs. This new format entertains the children as much as the adults. Furthermore, the smell of fresh bread coming out of the oven is reminiscent of French bakeries. Gatineau offers a wide range of French cakes and viennoiseries that you cannot find anywhere else in Oxford. Croissants, pains au chocolat, brioches not forgetting to mention chocolate cake, éclairs, macaroons and many other pastries, are exactly the same as French ones! Because of the lack of space in the premises and how much hard work it is for the chefs (who start working at 3.30 in the morning!) they cannot offer everything they wanted. However, because of the Gatineau’s success and the desire to satisfy its customers, Gatineau has some ideas to grow its business (but I will keep those a secret). As a typical French person, I am really meticulous concerning the baking of bread. I had the chance to taste one of the three kinds of baguettes Gatineau offer (white, poppy-seed and rustic). It is perfect: crispy outside and not too cooked inside. Just delicious! Actually, it is not surprising since it is really important for them to have the highest quality. This is the reason why each special ingredient is imported from France by an English company - the butter and milk, for example come from Normandy, to make the best bread and cakes on site. Otherwise, they make absolutely everything, except chocolate which requires a special room to be made, but I suppose we can forgive them that! Gatineau has built its reputation in Oxfordshire and works with several cafés and restaurants. So, if you do not have the opportunity to come to Summertown, you still have the chance to try some of Gatineau’s speciality cakes at one of their partnerships establishments, such as the Organic Café or the Grand Café, located in the heart of Oxford.

Don't Let Life Wear You Down Daily life and all that goes with it including fatigue, stress and anxiety can create a negative impact on our bodies through the onset of pain. There are many ways in which the body adapts to these physical changes, primarily the onset of neck and shoulder pain through too many days sat at the computer or too many late nights is a far too common occurrence for most people. Lower back pain also has a tendency to creep in for those who are mainly desk bound or who are clocking up too many car miles. It is all too easy to let these everyday 'niggles' become part of daily life. There are many ways that people who suffer with pain can help to manage these symptoms, manual therapy being one of them, along with regular exercises and stretching and strengthening techniques. The team at Kennington Osteopathic Practice are experienced manual therapists who help patients every week to diagnose and treat their symptoms and provide advice on how to ensure that old habits don't reoccur. Sophie and the team aim to help you and your body alleviate the pressures and strains of daily life through the use of osteopathic treatment, sports injury diagnosis and rehabilitation, and a range of Pilates classes. Patients present daily with a wide range of symptoms from wrist injuries to back pain as a result of pregnancy. Osteopaths don't just treat necks and backs as many believe, Sophie is an expert in the reduction of headaches and pregnancy pain for example, and Kate's speciality lies within sporting injuries, diagnostics and rehabilitation. The practice is located within the village of Kennington, just 2 miles from Oxford city centre and provides plenty of free parking and competitive prices. Kennington Osteopathic Practice takes a holistic approach to treatment, meaning that treatment is focused on ensuring that the whole body is functioning correctly to avoid re-injury, in addition to the presenting problem. Sophie and the team ensure that understandable advice is also provided to educate patients on how to break the pain causing cycle, which in turn prevents pain re-occurrence. Give us a call and see how we can help you. Kennington Osteopathic Practice, The Village Centre, Kennington Road, Oxford OX1 5PG Tel: 07787 404419 Web: www.kenningtonosteo.co.uk www.inoxford.com

Oxford Fashion Week

Written by Audrey Vallée 20th March

In March 2015, the Oxford Fashion Week celebrated its 6th anniversary. This year’s event saw a range of events taking place in different Oxford locations. I was fortunate to attend three events set up by the team: the opening night at the Varsity Club, the re-fashion at Town Hall but also the Bloggers Preview Party at the delightful Malmaison Hotel; the latter event a new addition to Oxford Fashion Week and a sign of the times! The Bloggers Preview was run by Antonia Mackay who is the PR Director. The aim of the Bloggers Preview Party was to introduce passionate individuals who want to work in fashion to those who already have an experience within it. There were several speakers including Katie McNeil (currently stylist for Huff Magazine) but also young fashion students such as Alison Brodie or Beth Elstone who had the opportunity to explain their current and future projects which they hope will help them to fulfil their dream of having a career in fashion. We also had the chance to hear from Adam Kashani and Erin Young – two models at OFW from Oxford University - who shared their ‘model experience’ with us, which was very interesting. The models then put on a sneak preview show so that we could see some of the designs featured for the show. For the organisers, this event was very successful because it mixed fashion and careers which surround this area – in this case journalism. The team introduced passionate and interesting young people who have the will to succeed in the fashion industry and who will probably work at the next Oxford Fashion Week in October. The next OFW – shows are planned during the Halloween period at the amazing Sheldonian Theatre and more new venues. See more at www.oxfordfashionweek.com www.livinginoxford.com

The Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Blenheim Palace Triathlon

Caroline Muirhead pushed herself to the limit last year for the Blenheim Palace Triathlon, raising over £23,000 for blood cancer charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, in memory of her brother who died last year Caroline took part in the triathlon after Gregor was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in September 2013. After his diagnosis he had intensive chemotherapy, radiotherapy and long stays in hospital. In February last year, Caroline was found to be a stem cell match for Gregor and he underwent a transplant. Devastatingly Gregor passed away in September, aged just 32. She said: “We were all devastated when Gregor was diagnosed but throughout everything he remained positive, always showing concern for his family above his own fears. I’ve never seen my brother prouder than the day his son Jamie was born in August 2011, he loved being a dad. After his stem cell transplant, Jamie would draw pictures for Gregor to cheer him up during the recovery. These, along with visits from Jamie and his wife Louise, were Gregor’s main driving force to get better. “Sadly, a few months after the triathlon, Gregor’s leukaemia returned and he died. His dream was to find a cure for AML. With the amazing events such as the triathlon, the fundraising it generates, combined with the dedicated work of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, hopefully one day we can achieve this. “Thanks to the incredible support from family, friends and colleagues – I managed to raise an amazing £23,000. The triathlon was a lot more physically demanding than I’d imagined but also a lot of fun. Crossing the finishing line was a very emotional moment for me. Matt Lawley, Head of Sports Events at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, says: “We can’t thank Caroline enough for the stunning amount she raised. It really is a phenomenal achievement and every penny raised for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research will help us in our mission to beat blood cancer, stop people from dying, and make patients’ lives better.” The Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Blenheim Palace Triathlon takes place on 13-14 June 2015. There are still limited entries available in return for raising sponsorship.
