City Sightseeing
Reviewed by Claire Suteau 12th March 2014
Yesterday, I had the chance to rediscover Oxford thanks to City Sightseeing. I had been in Oxford for a month on a secondment and always wanted to go on top of one of the lovely red buses! So on my last full day in Oxford, I went to Oxford train station to book my ticket and start my long awaited adventure. I already knew a lot about Oxford but the tour gave me views I would never see on foot and so much information about your beautiful city. There are so many fascinating sites in Oxford but knowing more about them was fantastic and what better way to do it in the glorious spring sunshine! After nearly four weeks of constant rain, I was very lucky! I sat on the top deck and chose to hear about Oxford in my own language, French, which was ‘parfait’! I followed the 9 mile tour on the map and did it twice it was so enjoyable. On the first route I stayed on board for the whole journey, listening to the historic facts and amusing comments and anecdotes about the different statues, colleges and wonderful buildings. The fifty minute tour passed very quickly. The tour guide made the whole experience fun, informative and very relaxing. For my second tour, I chose three stops to get off at, recommended to me by Jo in the City Sightseeing shop at the station. There are twenty stops in total. The first was on St Aldates to discover the majestic Christ Church and also to go to Alice’s shop where Alice, from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, used to buy sweets. Next was stop fourteen in the heart of the city to visit The Bodleian Library and New College to see where Harry Potter was filmed. My last stop was The Ashmolean Museum, a great place for lovers of art! The Oxford City Sightseeing tour is the best way to discover and know more about Oxford and it’s great value because you can have a 24 hour or 48 hour ticket to keep jumping on and off! I wish I had hopped on earlier in my stay!

Arts, Crafts and Downton Abbey Looking for a good day out from Oxford? If so, then the 19th century advice for young Americans still holds good: “Go West!” Just 20 miles or so west of Oxford lies one of the county’s hidden gems: a quiet, sparsely populated area close to the fledgling River Thames, rich in flora and fauna with picturesque stone villages far from the madding crowds. It is no surprise to learn that for centuries this area has inspired artists and artisans alike. William Morris, founder of the Arts & Crafts movement, fell in love with the area around Kelmscott, calling it his “Heaven on Earth”. His country home at Kelmscott Manor contains an outstanding collection of the possessions and works of Morris, his family and his Arts & Crafts associates, including furniture, original textiles, pictures, carpets, ceramics and metalwork. The house is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from April to October. Nearby in the quaint village of Filkins, housed in splendid 18th century buildings, you’ll find Cotswold Woollen Weavers with its design studio, mill shop and gallery, small textile museum and coffee shop. Their beautiful cloth is traditionally woven, with textures and colours inspired by the limestone landscapes of the Cotswolds. A few miles east of Filkins is the little market town of Bampton. In the Market Square, housed on the first floor of the 18thcentury town hall, is West Ox Arts Gallery, which holds regular exhibitions and a shop selling handmade jewellery, ceramics, glassware, cards and prints. Bampton, especially in the area around the church, may seem oddly familiar, even to first time visitors! For this is ‘Downton’ village, used for filming the outdoor scenes in the popular TV drama ‘Downton Abbey’. The church, the library and a number of other nearby buildings have all featured heavily in the drama series and a new leaflet highlighting the locations has recently been produced and can be downloaded at www.oxfordshirecotswolds.org/downton Less than 2 miles east of Bampton is the village of Aston, home to Aston Pottery, a traditional working pottery alongside a contemporary gift shop and country cafe. All the pottery is made and painted on site using traditional methods of production - unique patterns are created using stencilling techniques, which are then glazed. Details of all these attractions and many more can be found on the Oxfordshire Cotswolds website www.oxfordshirecotswolds.org

Tuesday 1st - Saturday 5th April: 1833. Rural Ireland. The British Army arrives to translate Gaelic place names into the King’s English. Farm-girl Máire finds herself torn between the affections of the local school teacher and the love of a British soldier, between her native tongue and a new language, and between the comfort of the familiar and the excitement of foreign possibilities.
Flown
Friday 18th - Saturday 19th April: A stunning troupe of circus performers and musicians are getting ready to put on a jaw-dropping spectacle. But there’s a problem; no one is prepared and mishaps, disasters and disagreements threaten to wreck the show. An aerialist is still ironing her dress, a cranky diva gets tangled in the rigging and one of the stuntmen is dangling from the lighting bar. Catastrophe is just one wrong move away.

Arts Review:
Arts at the Old Fire Station
Reviewed by by Lucy Parr 11th March 2014
Located on George St in central Oxford, the beautifully renovated historic Old Fire Station is now a destination arts centre run by Arts at the Old Fire Station and has been successfully celebrating and sharing the arts with the Oxford community since 2011. Spread over five floors, this exciting hub of creative activity includes a shop, gallery, theatre, studios and a social enterprise café run by Crisis. The Crisis Skylight charity is an education, training and employment centre, offering creative and formal learning opportunities to homeless and vulnerably housed people. By working in partnership with Arts at the Old Fire Station and sharing this wonderful space they aim to help end homelessness in Oxford by building confidence and expertise to introduce people back into the workforce. As soon as you walk through the door you’re transported from the traditional and classical Oxford into a fresh, vibrant and modern venue that’s buzzing with life. The reception area immediately introduces you to some amazing past art projects such as the beautiful giant steel and mirror creations mounted high on the walls. These form part of a collaborative project between the homeless and local artists, a striking example of the talent and skills that can be developed at the centre. The Gallery is a dedicated space for showcasing the best of contemporary art across the UK, with a particular focus on emerging artists from Oxfordshire. The current exhibition from local artist Emma Moxey, All the Familiar Landscapes, is an intriguing collection of abstract yet delicate interpretations of maps from her meaningful places. This pop-up space hosts a variety of exhibitions every 4-6 weeks and is well worth a visit. As is the gift shop, selling a wonderfully original range of items that are handmade or designed within the UK, with over half of the makers based within Oxfordshire. You can also shop online at shopattheoldfirestation.org.uk. If dance and fitness is your creative cup of tea, then the fully equipped studio is the perfect spot and plays host to 27 different classes! But if it’s actually a cup of tea you want then The Crisis Skylight café serves up a variety of refreshments to the public as well as providing on-the-job retail training for homeless people. The theatre is the centre’s largest and flexible space with full technical facilities, it’s a terrific destination to experience a wide variety of performances. Pop in to find out about up & coming shows or view their events online at oldfirestation.org.uk/events The Old Fire Station is truly a unique place in Oxford and extremely valuable for all sections of the community to meet, learn, create and change. I only had a taste and I already can’t wait to go back and experience more of what it has to offer.

Happy 15th Birthday Saffron From all of us at Living in Oxford, many happy returns to Ali Amzed and his team at Saffron Restaurant in Summertown. Fifteen years in any business is quite an achievement, but to celebrate that in the restaurant trade represents something very special.
Ali and his team celebrated with a party for 250 on Sunday 9th March and it was obviously a massive success as Ali explains. “We had two sittings so we could fit everyone in and it was wonderful to see so many of our original customers who have been coming here the full 15 years. I had some very touching messages of support before the event and some very kind messages after, wishing us all well and thanking us for our service over the years.” Why not pop in to Saffron to wish Ali a Happy Birthday yourself and at the same time experience Saffron’s excellent cuisine. Well done Ali and team! 204-206 Banbury Rd, Oxford OX2 7BY 01865 512211 www.saffronatoxford.co.uk

Restaurant at The Randolph Hotel
Reviewed by by John Hobart 10th March 2014
To most people, the image The Randolph brings to mind is of a luxury 5-star hotel serving sumptuous afternoon teas in beautiful traditional surroundings. However, as we sat enjoying flawless service and delicious food, my dining companion and I couldn’t quite understand why dining wasn’t what the Randolph was known for? Part of the reason may be that the Executive Chef Simon Bradley, has been there for less than a year. But with experience at the Ritz in Paris and Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, as well as leading the triple-Rosette East Lodge in the Peak District, Bradley brings with him the experience, determination and skill to raise dining at the Randolph to match its luxury hotel reputation. On entering the Randolph there is an unashamed sense of old-fashioned Englishness. In some environments wood paneling and smartly uniformed staff may create tension, but here these characteristics are worn lightly so as you walk in off Beaumont Street smiling, friendly staff immediately make the luxury feel comfortable and welcoming. The dining room is undeniably grand with oil paintings, velvet curtains and an enormously high beamed ceiling all encouraging you to enjoy some old fashioned comforts you watch the world bustle past outside. The Randolph offers fine dining of a quality not found elsewhere in the heart of Oxford with a menu presenting a choice of five or six starters and main courses, each elegantly and clearly described. If you need any help deciding, then the food knowledge of the staff is exceptional, from the origins, cooking methods and flavours of each dish to recommending complementary wines from the substantial wine menu. The food was excellent, especially the Duck & Sweetbreads starter and Lemon Sole & Langoustine main. Every dish was cooked and presented perfectly, and served by people who clearly love their food. This passion was made clear as my dining companion got lost in a deep discussion over the cheese trolley… As always, good service is vital to enjoying your meal and the Randolph staff seemed able to effortlessly balance attentiveness, knowledge, and passion, then delivered it all with a relaxed ease. The whole experience was exceptionally good, and while the Randolph isn’t a cheap eat at £44.95 for three courses, it is a delicious one that deserves far greater recognition and your custom, as it will have mine again. The Randolph should be known as a place to dine, not only a place to stay! Beaumont Street, Oxford, OX1 2LN Tel: 01865 256400 Web: www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk www.inoxford.com

Malikas Indian restaurant
Reviewed by John Hobart
23rd January 2014
In a city known for its Indian restaurants, what is there to mark one of them above the rest? Well, I believe that for restaurants you have to look first at the food and second at the service, and in both these categories Malikas excels! We headed to Malikas on a cold, damp Thursday evening looking for a cheerful environment and good food to help shake off the January blues. Coming in from the drizzle we were immediately welcomed, our coats taken, and a choice of tables offered in a half-full restaurant. This attentive service was going to be something we got used to during the evening - always there, but never imposing on conversation or enjoyment. The menu has all the traditional dishes you would expect, with classic Starters, Currys, Balti, Tandoori and Biryani options as well as a range of Chef’s Specialties and fish dishes. If you are overwhelmed you can opt to let the Chef choose a four-course feast for you for under £20! I always like trying something new, so after a helpful conversation with the waiter opted for a starter of Baza Maach (Fried fish with mixed spices), main of Murgh Nawabi (chicken breast stuffed with mince and medium spiced) and a side of Sag Paneer (spinach cooked with homemade cheese) all washed down with a glass of red. Meanwhile my dining companion had asked for a special dish not on the menu (with extra green chillies!) and a pint of Cobra – the waiter was happy to oblige. Malikas prides itself on its food, and rightly so – it was superb, beautifully presented, delicately spiced, and absolutely delicious. It was no surprise to hear the Chef has won national awards for his curries and loves experimenting, so asking for options not on the menu is welcome! Despite well-earned confidence in their excellent food, Malikas doesn’t sit back on its laurels. They have refurbished the restaurant twice in six years and constantly update the menu - testing new dishes and exploring customers’ preferences. As a result a contemporary feel runs through the restaurant, from décor to menu, all with an effortless attention to detail, and complemented by knowledgeable and friendly staff. We had entered Malikas wanting to cheered from the depressing January weather, we were rewarded with a warm atmosphere, superb food, and an all-round first class experience - Thank you Malikas! 218 Cowley Rd, Oxford, OX4 1UQ Tel: 01865 723029 Web: www.malikasrestaurant.co.uk www.inoxford.com

Jee Saheb
Reviewed by Rebecca Kashti
21st February 2014
The Jee Saheb is situated in North Parade, Jericho in what is a very special part of Oxford. Parking is very much down to luck but we were lucky and parked nearby. The décor of the restaurant is refreshing and different to the majority of Indian restaurants. The floors are wooden and the walls are white which really adds to the freshness of the place. It is also well lit, something some restaurants fail to do, but not so that the atmosphere is lost. There are none of the predictable wall colourings that are commonly seen in Indian restaurants. We were seated immediately on entering the restaurant, the welcome from the drinks waiter and the food waiter was warm and friendly. The drinks arrived immediately. We had different waiters for the food than the drinks which was a nice touch. The attentiveness of the waiters was exceptional throughout - and it was clear this was to all diners, not just us. The light and airy decor brought all attention back to the food which was very effective. Rather than focussing on a “busy” restaurant, you could focus on the food. The range of food and drinks was extensive and the chef's recommended menu was refreshingly different. The food itself was served with attention and full description of all the dishes by the waiters. We chose dishes we had not tries before and were pleasantly surprised. The starters of lamb chops and prawn pathia puri were very tasty and well presented. The puri was enormous but light to eat. Our main courses were from the chef’s recommended menu and were very good – again the size of the portions were generous. The meal was delicious, the food was so fresh and we could taste the different spices coming through. It certainly tasted like Indian home cooking and not the generic food you sometimes come across in restaurants. The atmosphere in the Jee Saheb is great - the clientele is diverse and comprises all age groups and backgrounds which makes it vibrant and engaging. It seemed to be a local restaurant for lots of people – not only those inside but also judging by the amount of people who waved as they walked past. 15 North Parade, Oxford, OX2 6LX Tel: 01865 513 773 Web: www.jeesaheb.co.uk www.inoxford.com

The Oxford Kitchen
Reviewed by by John Hobart 12th March 2014
The Oxford Kitchen is the new boy in town, but they decided when they opened on 29 December last year not to arrive with a fanfare, but to let their food do the talking; over the last three months business has steadily grown as word spreads that there are Michelin quality chefs working in Summertown! The restaurant is in the heart of Summertown, an area otherwise poor in quality dining options. It is beautifully presented with steel and wood fittings, an exposed brick wall, a couple of booths, and pop-art decoration, all contributing to a contemporary chic atmosphere in which it’s hard not lean back and forget the day job. Relaxed fine dining is what The Oxford Kitchen is aiming for. There are no airs or graces here, but there is a confidence that what they are offering is what the town wants - somewhere to go as a family for lunch and where you don’t have to dress up for dinner, but with a menu and quality that will suit, and impress, everyone. Executive chef John Footman has ‘been there and done that’, and so his menus don’t try to play for judge’s awards, but instead respect and respond to their diners, reflecting what they want to eat and the chefs enjoy cooking. As a result the menu has a two-part feel to it, with both fine dining and classic grill options. The fine dining dishes include starters of Cornish crab salad with pink grapefruit (£8.50) and Crispy ham hock with celeriac purée (£7), or mains of line caught cod (£17.50), parmesan gnocchi with wild mushrooms (£15), and 36 hour braised ox cheek with smoked potato purée (£18.50); but alongside these there are classics from the grill: homemade beef burger (£12.95), steak and chips (£22-29), or for the more organized (you have to order 48hrs in advance), Wagyu burger with lobster (£40). On my visit the food was beautifully presented and tasted delicious, in particular the ham hock starter and ox cheek main (which was utterly superb, falling apart with the touch of a fork!), and each dish was complemented by very reasonably priced, and very good white or red wine – as recommended by the waiter from the excellent wine menu. Top quality food, a stylish setting and reasonable prices mean this new addition to the Summertown and Oxford restaurant scene will undoubtedly become a firm favourite for locals and a destination for the County.

Bear & Ragged Staff
Reviewed by Ian Francis
10th March 2014
On the Food and Drink pages of the Bear and Ragged Staff website it says: “Exceptional Food, Exceptional Service, Exceptional Place… at the right price” This description truly does represent our experience of eating at the Bear and Ragged Staff. Our host Mark Greenwood described the Bear as a “Country Inn with Character”. This wonderfully located Inn offers so much and we are already regular visitors. Whether you want a delicious breakfast, a midweek business lunch, an after work pint and bite to eat, a cocktail and some nibbles, an evening meal or Sunday lunch, the food is always superb. You can eat in the bar next to an open fire in the winter, in the restaurant, or outside in the terraced area. We were struggling to choose from the range of starters on offer and opted for a sharing platter so that we could sample a range of dishes. This included peppered Beef Carpaccio, Hot Smoked Salmon, Beetroot Tart Tatin, Sundried Tomato and Garlic Focaccia and Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Gruyere and Almond Gratin. The dishes really were truly mouth-watering; the portion sizes were perfect – leaving you anticipating the next course. The menu, which is changed every three months, was later expressed by our host as “a menu with attitude”. I would agree. It is an eclectic range of culinary classic combinations with a contemporary twist to many of the dishes. My wife’s choice of main course was Pancetta wrapped Monk Fish with Pureed Sweet Potato and Seasonal Kale – she described it as scrumptious. My choice of Pan-fried Halibut Fillet, Parsnip Puree, Borlotti Beans, Spring Onion and Verjus Sauce was equally delicious. Following a glass of Italian Chardonnay selected to start, I consulted with staff on what would be a good choice to accompany my main course. A White Rioja, which I had not previously tried, was recommended and was absolutely superb. The wine list provided for an excellent range of wines by the glass and staff were very knowledgeable on this subject. We wished we could have sampled a tasting menu of the dessert choices too and after much deliberation we chose the Apple and Calvados Trifle and the Carrot Cake with a Cream Cheese Sorbet. Described as one of “the most unusual but stunning wines you will ever taste”, the Californian Black Muscat dessert wine was indeed amazing. Post dinner, our host joined us to hear about our experiences. Our conversation was very engaging and ranged from the Fibonacci numbers and the 1.618 Golden Ratio to the rarest and tastiest wines that Mark is currently sourcing for the wine list. We had the most delicious food, superb service and fascinating conversation. 28 Appleton Rd, Cumnor, Oxford OX2 9QH Tel: 01865 862329 Web: www.www.bearandraggedstaff.com www.inoxford.com

Patisserie Review:
Gatineau Oxford
Reviewed by John Hobart
7th February 2014
As you gently wake from your Saturday morning lie-in, spare a thought for the chefs of Gatineau who have been preparing and baking your breakfast baguette and croissants since 2am… Herve Gatineau opened his patisserie and boulangerie in 2006 with the aim of offering the highest quality of traditional lines and exciting new creations. To do this the team at Gatineau have to be dedicated to their art, and it is an art as to bake to the standard of Gatineau takes huge dedication, expert planning, artistic creativity, and a touch of French magic. This magic starts as you step off the Banbury Road and into the smart atmosphere and delicious smells of the shop. You will be greeted by a smile and a French accent - the whole team is from France - then will be captured by the elegant, even beautiful, display of foods. Everywhere you look there is a feast for the senses: the rainbow colours of macaroons, glistening cubes of pate des fruit, soft pastel coloured marshmallows, and invitingly flirtatious cakes and pastries, all wrapped in the aroma of fresh bread. Gatineau offers truly delicious hand-crafted bread, croissants and brioche made by their Baker every morning using specialist imported flour Deschamps for baguettes (£1.40) and white loaves (£3.10), and Campagrain for Campaillou loaves (£5.20/kg). Pricing is very competitive with other bakeries and patisseries, perhaps on balance slightly cheaper than those in the centre of town, and the shop's reputation for its bread is demonstrated by their selling out every day and even being invited to take part in 'Britain's Best Bakery' on TV! Every baked item in Gatineau is made on site, however the chocolate is imported, but you can't blame them! The producer, Bellanger, has been awarded the coveted title of 'Meilleur Ouvrier de France', the highest recognition of craftsmanship for a Chocolatier, and that quality comes through in the taste and perfection of the product. Gatineau is somewhere to drop in for a coffee and croissant, to buy your daily bread, or find yourself a treat (I'd recommend the Cassis and Violet Cheesecake!). It is open from 7am Tuesday-Saturday and after work to 6.30pm Tuesday-Friday, as well as from 8am to 2.30pm on Sunday, so there is no excuse not to eat some of the best bread in Oxford, and find yourself something to sweet to enjoy! 209 Banbury Road, Summertown, Oxford. The Oxford Hotel – Restaurant review
Reviewed by Ian Francis
4th January 2014
My wife and I stayed at the Oxford Hotel for a post-Christmas weekend leisure break enjoying a quiet and relaxing stay. Wherever we are, food is an important feature of our experience; we ate at the hotel throughout our stay sampling the full range of eateries and food available. Light bites, fresh pastries and coffee are available all day in the Cappuccino Lounge where we took the weight off our feet and enjoyed a strong and piping hot espresso on arrival. After settling into our room we ventured into the Medio bar where there is an a la carte menu offering a variety of hot and cold food ranging from healthy fresh salads to club sandwiches and burgers. For our evening meal, we dined in the hotel’s Medio restaurant which boasts an AA Rosette award. The restaurant is both modern and spacious, with simple, clear lines and neutral decor. The ambience is informal and relaxed and the service was courteous, friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The restaurant takes bookings from both residents and nonresidents. The menu was 5, 5 and 5 format with additional daily specials also available. The food combinations and flavours were complimentary and the presentation was thoughtful and without fuss. Displayed on contrasting plain white crockery the structure and natural colour of the food was accentuated. The wine menu was well presented with good descriptive information. It offered an extensive selection of wines from around the world, with an excellent choice of both red and white. A good number of the wines were available by the carafe and glass which meant we could have a wine of choice with each course without waste or compromise. We particularly enjoyed the delightful Sauvignon dessert wine with hints of vanilla and honey which we chose to accompany our desserts. Breakfast the following morning was buffet style with a full complement of English and continental choices available ranging from traditional bacon and eggs to croissants, cold meats and breads. There were healthy options of muesli, delicious fresh fruit, natural yoghurts and juices on offer and a full menu of teas and coffees. The Oxford Hotel is an ideal base from which to explore the city of Oxford, starting your day with an impressive breakfast and ending it with a delicious evening meal in the Medio restaurant before falling into a sumptuous king size bed. Brothertons Brasserie
Reviewed by Richard Rosser
27th February 2014
We were staying at the nearby Hope House Hotel in Woodstock and had heard good things about Brothertons, so it was the perfect opportunity to find out if this ‘predominantly Italian’ restaurant, as it describes itself on the website, was deserving of the plaudits. Dimitri Innocenti, Owner, opened the restaurant in 2001 with his wife Dorothy, Head Chef (and Celiac Chef). Located in the heart of picturesque Woodstock, on the doorstep of Blenheim Palace and just a ten minute drive from Oxford City Centre, Dimitri is supported by his family and paints the perfect picture of all that is good about an Italian restaurant owner. The menu is wide and varied, but Tina and I both plumped for the excellent chicken liver pâté, accompanied by a gin and tonic for Tina and a pint of Moretti for me. We engaged in conversation with the couple at the next table, quite clearly they knew their stuff about food and both were extremely impressed with the restaurant. I went for the Escalope of Pork with crack black peppercorn sauce, vegetables and potatoes and a chilled glass of Pinot Grigio. For £13.95, it was mind-bogglingly good. I could eat that every night for a month. Tina had the sirloin steak, cooked to perfection and served with mushroom and cream sauce, plus mouth-watering chips. We finished with ice cream – Tina chose the vanilla and I had the mint chocolate chip. Maybe not that adventurous but this rounded off a heavenly meal. Dimitri showed me around his establishment after dinner and it is quite clear he is proud of his business – there’s nothing better to guarantee a great meal. Upstairs is a private dining area or overflow for busy Friday and Saturday nights. When we returned to take pictures of Dimitri, he told me how he had put on a surprise 70th Birthday Party for a guest upstairs who was moved to tears. That quite clearly meant more to Dimitri than anything. This is a man with Italian passion coursing through his veins and the personality that keeps you coming back….and the food is stunning. And if you’re a Juventus fan, you can guarantee Dimitri will be a friend for life!

Leisure Review:
Frilford Heath Golf Club
Review by Colin Rosser
10th March 2014
Frilford Heath Golf Club is one of the few Golf Clubs in Southern England to boast three separate 18 hole courses, each with its own character. It is located just off the A34 South of Oxford making it easily accessible whilst driving from any direction and when you get there it is always well worth the journey. My friends and I played the Green Course: Although the shortest of the courses on offer from Frilford, still requires you to plot your way round to ensure a good score. After the enormous amount of rain we have had this Winter you would expect a lot of water and mud, but thanks to the sandy subsoil the course was dry and very playable. The fairways and greens were immaculate as they always are. The outward nine is the easier and starts with the only par five, but the 7th is a long par four which is quite rightly stroke index 1! Coming home there are four particularly tough par fours, the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th which really gives the course some teeth! They are followed by a long par three and to end with a tricky short par four. After the game we all had a refreshing shower where towels are always supplied and then went to the bar. There are a great range of both soft and alcoholic drinks available. We were just in time to catch the last of The Green Thai Chicken Curry which went down superbly with a pint of IPA! The food in my experience is without equal in Oxfordshire Golf Clubs, and on the many occasions I have been here I have never had a bad meal. The Golf Club is hugely popular with Societies and host meetings with up to 200 players. It also caters for a number of Local, National and International Tournaments, which is well beyond the capabilities of the majority of Golf Clubs. Due to there being three courses available you do not have to book a tee time, however the club will book a tee time if you take a group. The Courses are divided between accepting two, three and fourball games on a rotational basis. It is a very friendly club and a guest or new member would not have a problem linking up with different groups for a game. As you would expect Frilford has a well stocked Pro Shop offering a large array of equipment and accessories, and under the leadership of Derek Craik, the Head Professional has the normal Golf lessons available from him and his staff. For Membership enquiries please contact the Executive Director, Alistair Booth or the General Manager both of whom I have always found very approachable and keen to help prospective Members. Push it to the Limit!
Oxford resident Dan Clarkson is pushing himself to the limit, training for the Blenheim Palace Triathlon to raise £50,000 for blood cancer charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, a charity incredibly close to his heart. In January 2011, Dan’s daughter, Scarlett was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), aged just six. Unfortunately her initial chemotherapy treatment was unsuccessful and she relapsed, requiring further chemotherapy, steroids and radiotherapy. Throughout December 2013, she rarely returned home, aside from Christmas Day when she had to be rushed back to hospital at 9pm with a treatment-related infection. Scarlett, now nine years old, will continue to receive treatment for a further two years. Dan says: “Having a child with cancer has a devastating impact, both for the child and their family. If we can help reach a day when no other family has to go through the pain of having their child diagnosed with leukaemia, then the pain of our training (which at times is quite considerable) will be well worthwhile.” Dan will be joined by a team of 14 called “Scarlett’s Dragons”, comprising of fathers of children at Scarlett’s school. The team have already raised £10,000 towards their £50,000 target. Dan Solley, Head of Sports Events at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, says: “We are constantly inspired by the stories of those taking part in events for the charity and the dedication of our supporters like Dan and Scarlett’s Dragons. Every penny raised for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research will help us in our mission to beat blood cancer – stopping people from dying and making patients’ lives better. We wish them the very best of luck at the Blenheim Palace Triathlon.” To support Dan and the Scarlett Dragons please visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DanClarkson Every year The Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Blenheim Palace Triathlon attracts a fantastic elite field and up to 7,000 triathletes to conquer one of the world’s most picturesque events.
