Living in Oxford August

Welcome to Living In Oxford

What a glorious Summer! With the sun beating down outside, we’ve got some great outdoor events for you to read all about in this month’s Living in Oxford Magazine. We continue the Shakespeare theme of July with reviews of As You Like It, Twelfth Night and Macbeth. Oxford Shakespeare Company adorn our cover for it must be the 6th or 7th year in a row for August and it’s good to have them back once again. I am reliably informed by the two most powerful women in my life (wife and mum) that it is a great production so make sure you book your tickets soon. There is also the fabulous Foodies Festival to read about, get on board City Sightseeing, enjoy a cool summer’s drink at Angels. Whilst we have some decent weather, why not get your running shoes on and start getting in shape for The Oxford Half on 12th October. It will soon be here! And finally, we’re launching the first Living in Oxford Awards on 1st October. Read more on page 27 and make sure you support your favourites when voting opens. Enjoy August

As You Like It William Shakespeare

After last year’s magnificent summer run, The Oxford Shakespeare Company, acclaimed specialists in open-air and site specific theatre and a must-see favourite during the Oxford summer, are delighted to bring you Shakespeare's As You Like It. We welcome rising director Michael Oakley and look forward to more sensational costumes from Adrian Lillie and original compositions by Nicholas Lloyd Webber. Fall in love with Shakespeare’s most musical and joyful romantic comedy in an outdoor promenade production in the beautiful surroundings of Wadham College, Oxford. The stunning architecture and glorious gardens, create the perfect contrast between the strictures and repressions of the court against the lushness of the Forest of Arden, whose inhabitants are at one with nature and everyone seems to be in love… Encountering a host of colourful characters, and accumulating chaos and confusion along the way, Rosalind must first discover her real self before true love can flourish… All the world’s a stage... The OSC, now in its 12th year, has a national reputation through its work in Oxford and with the Historic Royal Palaces of the Tower of London, Hampton Court, Kensington and the Banqueting House, for exceptional open-air and site- specific productions.

This summer the OSC will also performing at Act in Action, www.artinaction.org.uk and at the Wildnerness Festival, Cornbury Park www.wildernessfestival.com Come shine, or rain, please give your support to our treasured but endangered open air events.

City Sightseeing

Reviewed by Claire Suteau 12th March 2014

Yesterday, I had the chance to rediscover Oxford thanks to City Sightseeing. I had been in Oxford for a month on a secondment and always wanted to go on top of one of the lovely red buses! So on my last full day in Oxford, I went to Oxford train station to book my ticket and start my long awaited adventure. I already knew a lot about Oxford but the tour gave me views I would never see on foot and so much information about your beautiful city. There are so many fascinating sites in Oxford but knowing more about them was fantastic and what better way to do it in the glorious spring sunshine! After nearly four weeks of constant rain, I was very lucky! I sat on the top deck and chose to hear about Oxford in my own language, French, which was ‘parfait’! I followed the 9 mile tour on the map and did it twice it was so enjoyable. On the first route I stayed on board for the whole journey, listening to the historic facts and amusing comments and anecdotes about the different statues, colleges and wonderful buildings. The fifty minute tour passed very quickly. The tour guide made the whole experience fun, informative and very relaxing. For my second tour, I chose three stops to get off at, recommended to me by Jo in the City Sightseeing shop at the station. There are twenty stops in total. The first was on St Aldates to discover the majestic Christ Church and also to go to Alice’s shop where Alice, from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, used to buy sweets. Next was stop fourteen in the heart of the city to visit The Bodleian Library and New College to see where Harry Potter was filmed. My last stop was The Ashmolean Museum, a great place for lovers of art! The Oxford City Sightseeing tour is the best way to discover and know more about Oxford and it’s great value because you can have a 24 hour or 48 hour ticket to keep jumping on and off! I wish I had hopped on earlier in my stay!

The Good, The Bad &

The Ugly for August Each month we will provide the good folk of Oxfordshire with some invaluable advice about the world of fruit and veg. To reinforce our stunning pearls of wisdom we have sectioned this regular feature into THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY, plus some great nutritional advice from the lovely Helen! What more could you ask for? ‘Sun?’ We're greengrocers, not miracle workers but we appear to be having some impact! Have a nice month.

THE GOOD - All sorts

Cabbage – Local produce supplied form WG Gibbons & Sons. Aubergines – at their best and cheapest, until the end of September – Silky textured, glossy and elegant, try brushed with oil and grilled. Apricots, Nectarines and Peaches are at the top of their game. Beetroot - try adding purée cooked beetroot to the batter before baking. Chantenay carrots, Blueberries – Superfood, sweet. Fennel – underrated summer vegetable. Lettuce – Summer lettuces are full of flavour during the long summer months. Crunchy little gem, crispy iceberg and sweet romaine hearts. Peas – need nothing more than boiling water. Samphire – is at its best this time of year. Raspberries – Still a great treasure of the British summer. Cabbage, Cauli and Broccoli still good from Gibbons.

ts Roo S ay

We would like to welcome a new driver to the fold – Joseph. He has had experience working in the trade for a number of years and with all of our help and guidance he will make a valuable member of the Roots Of Oxford team.

About Roots

We like to think we're good old fashioned greengrocers with big cabbage sized hearts and the truth is…. We are! Whatever your needs, we're here to help. With many of the area's leading restaurants, colleges and schools amongst our incRrootible customer list, it's no wonder we walk around all day with smiles on our faces, not to mention our lovely green t-shirts. THE BAD - bits and bobs

Main Crop potatoes are at the end of their regular season. Jersey Royal Potatoes have a very short season and the supply is running low – this results in an increase in the price. Cherries – Short Season. Make the most of this succulent produce now. English produce coming to the end of its very short season. Rectory Farm (local) strawberries are approaching the end of their prestige stage. English strawberries are of course still available and the supply remains strong. Mushrooms are currently displaying signs of feathering on the caps. We are currently experiencing episodes of this and are keeping a check on things.

THE UGLY - It’s Summer

We are still in the throes of the summer period at the moment – and very nice it is too. Parsnip and Swede are still proving to be tough cookies in the vegetable trade.

Nutritional Advice with Helen Money

Raspberries Raspberries are very low in calories, just 50 kcal for a 200g punnet plus British raspberries are so sweet they don't need any added sugar. Raspberries are a good source of vitamin C which will help ward off summer colds and support collagen in the skin. Apricots Apricots are a good source of Vitamin A which supports the immune system and keeps eyes and skin healthy. Apricots are lovely eaten raw or stewed. They can be added to yogurt and muesli for a healthy breakfast. Tom Kime is an excellent chef whose recipes excite the taste buds by including hot, sour, salty and sweet flavours all in one dish. I often make a version of his Spice Roasted Fruits recipe using nectarines and apricots and just one tablespoon of honey. http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3300/spice-roasted-fruits-with-honey-and-orange-sauce.

Following last year’s acclaimed summer production of Henry V, Creation Theatre Company returns with a new production of Shakespeare’s most violent play. Theatre Article:

Twelfth Night

Celebrating 450 years since the birth of the Bard and to launch a long awaited annual repertory season of popular plays by English playwrights, Oxford Castle Quarter will host Twelfth Night in an unprecedented co-production with the English Repertory Theatre, to be presented open air on the Castle Mound directed by Gavin Davis from July until September this year. With the new space, holding up to 500 audience members, set within the Castle complex with the huge Oxford Castle mound forming the backdrop of Illyria, Twelfth Night leaves it’s traditional Christmas slot and jumps with a huge splash into the Summer Fete hosted by the local dignitaries. Set on the Cornish coast at Orsino’s stately home, this vivid, outrageous comedy grabs identical twins from the sea to turn them loose on society with designs on marrying well, disguises sea captains as fools, finds love, drunkenness, debauchery and the return of the conga to the ballroom. Whilst never losing sight of the glorious verse be warned, if you sit in the front row you will get wet. If audiences do not know the play, or are concerned with not understanding old Elizabethan verse, be not afraid; the play promises to serve up a historical comedy for a contemporary audience, with a refreshing modern delivery. With the huge support of Oxford Unlocked, the Visit Oxford, Oxford Castle and Malmaison; audiences are invited to join a cast of extraordinary characters at Oxford Castle in this fast paced comedy that promises to be the beginning of a new popular cultural hub in Oxford, and that brings to life the glorious historical buildings to promote our unmatched, proud dramatic heritage for local people and tourists from all over the world as well as help the local businesses of Oxford. An ensemble of just 10 actors from this pioneering repertory company take the audience through this dazzling adventure comedy which is family friendly and accessible to all ages. They do not have any grant funding – they are successful actors, making classical theatre utterly enjoyable and exciting for every possible member of the audience. Finally, British Theatre that you want to see.

Bar Review:

Angels Cocktail Bar

Reviewed by John Hobart Saturday 24th May.

Oxford offers a choice of venues where you can sip a cocktail - from hotels to restaurants and clubs to bars. The challenge is to be something special, and Angels succeeds with a menu of vintage classics and modern creations served with the glamour of the silver screen. Located on trendy Little Clarendon Street, a short walk from the city centre, Angels immediately feels a bit different. As you step in you are greeted by a member of staff on the door and Bette Davies, Katharine Hepburn and Greta Garbo on the walls, while the polished red bar and gilt-framed mirrors give a sense of timeless glamour. When a space is comfortable with itself, it is easy to relax within it. This was evident from the range of people there at 6pm on a Saturday with younger and older couples on dates or having pre-dinner drinks and groups of friends of all ages meeting and laughing. The bar had a great feel to it, friendly and relaxed with everyone there to enjoy the moment. The cocktail menu is not overly-long, but is guaranteed to have something different and the staff are great at giving advice! There are the classics that you’ll recognize (Cosmopolitan, Mojito, Daiquiris and Sours), but alongside them are Vintage cocktails and Angels Lab. The Vintage section offers cocktails rediscovered from old books or films, like the Yokohama Romance from the Romance nightclub in Japan where brandy, cherry brandy, lime and passion fruit are combined in a martini glass to create a rich fruity concoction, or the more delicate than expected Corpse Reviver of gin, Cointreau, vermouth, lemon and absinthe. The Angels Lab showcases the mixing skills of the bar team who love creating new drinks for customers and adding them to their repertoire and, for the most popular, to the menu. New favourites include the Pear and Cardamom sidecar – muddled cardamom seeds shaken with Xante pear brandy, Cointreau and lemon giving a subtly spiced cocktail with an exotic undertone – and the now famous Tiramisu, which tastes like the dessert in a glass with layers of espresso, Kahlua and Mozart white & dark chocolate liqueurs. In addition to serving drinks Angels offers afternoon classes in how to make them, and a venue you can hire for private parties. For Angels it is all about the customer enjoying themselves, and that means they are flexible, creative, friendly, and well worth visiting! Oxford runners to experience Bannister Mile 60 years after feat

Runners in this year’s Vitality Oxford Half Marathon (Vitality OXFORDHALF) will be able to experience their very own piece of local history, as organisers announce the introduction of the ‘Bannister Mile’ to the October race. 2014 marks 60 years since Sir Roger Bannister became the first ever man to run a mile in less than four minutes at Oxford University’s Iffley Road Track; the very same place that the runners in this year’s Vitality OXFORDHALF will experience it just before the half way point at this year’s race. Andrew Taylor, Race Director of the Vitality OXFORDHALF said: “We are really excited by the introduction of the Bannister Mile at the Vitality Oxford Half Marathon this autumn. As an important and proud part of Oxfordshire’s history, what better way to celebrate Sir Roger’s amazing feat”. In previous years the course has run past the University Sports Centre on Iffley Road. But this year the course will incorporate a short detour off the Iffley Road, so runners will have the unique opportunity to run in Bannister’s footsteps with one lap around the very track where history was made 60 years ago. The Bannister Mile will begin around the six mile mark on the Iffley Road and will end on the finish line of the track before registrations the Iffley Road. Competitors’ results will include both chip timing for the half marathon and the Bannister Mile. Andrew added: “We are very grateful to Sir Roger in lending his support and name to this initiative, and for his ongoing support for the Oxford Half Marathon since its beginning. We’re also extremely grateful for the support of Oxford University Sports for the use of their facility, and allowing thousands of road runners to invade their track.” Sir Roger Bannister commented: “It is such an honour to have a section of the route named after me. I’m delighted that the Bannister Mile will take place in my hometown of Oxford, at the same place where I set my four minute mile”. To mark the 60th anniversary since Sir Roger set the record, he has recently had a book published. He added: “I have just published my autobiography called Twin Tracks, which is about my running in Oxford and my medical career.” The Vitality Oxford Half Marathon route takes runners on a tour of Oxford’s beautiful countryside. It is a flat single-lap route perfect for runners of all abilities. It takes place on Sunday 12th October and entries are still open at www.oxfordhalf.co.uk. www.oxfordhalf.co.uk www.inoxford.com
