Available Seasonal Products

Clementine's They sell in large numbers from midNovember through to January, giving them the nickname "Christmas oranges" in some markets. Sprouts The quintessential Christmas dinner veg. Although they're related to cabbage - they even look like a miniature, compact version - they have a sweet, nutty flavour, which some people can find bitter. We offer a wide range of prepared lines as we understand that this can be a fiddly and time consuming product to prepare. Parsnips Again a staple of the Christmas dinner spread – try the Piccolo variety which are a baby parsnip.. They are delicious and incredibly convenient and best of all there's no need to peel, they can be cooked whole. Figs Dried fruit are common around Christmas, often combined in recipes with spices – and we can obtain the sugar variety. Dates Medjools are a deliciously chewy and fleshy date bursting with sweet honey, caramel and cinnamon flavours. They are packed full of goodness, which makes them the perfect everyday healthy snack. We currently supply the famous Eat Me brand of glove box dates, which remain the market leader and are a firm family favourite at Christmas

A Guaranteed warm welcome at Shanghai 30’s

Reviewed by Richard Rosser 15th November

Established in 2005 overlooking the gardens of Christ Church College, the former Bishop’s Palace has been gracefully restored to capture the stylish and classy ambience of 1930’s Shanghai. You are always guaranteed a warm welcome by George and is attentive staff at Shanghai 30’s in St Aldates, just a two minute walk from Carfax in the centre of Oxford. The Royal ‘line up’ can be a little intimidating but it is always intended to make you feel special and set you up for a great experience. We were sat in the window – ask for the window seat if you can to get the view over Christ Church – and before we could peruse the menu we had our drinks, a gin and tonic for Tina and a Chinese beer for me. To start we shared an old favourite, Crispy Aromatic Duck, beautifully presented with pancakes, cucumber, leek and hoi sin sauce. A delicate starter, the duck was perfectly tender and the pancakes melted in your mouth. The service was impeccable and as soon as our plates had been cleared away, our main courses arrived with three immaculately dressed members of staff delivering one after the other. I could hear my sizzling beef fillet before it entered the room. Brandy marinated tender beef fillet pan fried with onion and pepper in Shanghai 30’s popular honey and black pepper sauce and served on a hot plate, this was as mouth watering as I remembered it the last time we visited the restaurant. Tina plumped for the Sizzling Seafood in Black Pepper sauce. The dish included stir fried squids, prawns and fish slices with onions and peppers in a white wine and black pepper sauce served on a hot plate. As if that wasn’t enough, George then served us his stir fried egg noodle with super king Prawns. Although the dessert list was varied and extensive, we were so full we had to pass and settle for two espresso coffees. George, the General Manager, then invited us to sample some Remy Martin Lois XIII Cognac, probably the best brandy available. I am almost lost for words. What an experience! Café Rouge A bit of Paris in Witney

Reviewed by Richard Rosser 14th November

Café Rouge in Witney has the ambience of a Paris brasserie, open plan with a huge bar to your left as you enter and an electric atmosphere with every table taken…except one! The décor is inviting with red, not surprisingly, dominating alongside warm creams, browns and yellows. The French theme continues with French themed posters and photographs adorning the walls. General Manager Andy Wolf greeted us and showed Tina and I to our table, meandering through tables of families, couples, large groups celebrating and all enjoying great food, wonderful service an contributing to the vibrant and buzzy scene. We were due at the cinema to see Brad Pitt’s latest blockbuster (oh how I love Brad! Not) so we asked Andy for his help in choosing his favourites. To start we shared the Planche Rustique, a sharing board including a charcuterie selection, pâté maison, cornichons, houmous, olive tapenade, red pepper tapenade and smoked almonds, served with rustic breads. This was a great appetiser, a rainbow of colours and wide range of exquisite tastes. Our main course arrived once we had polished off our starter. Tina went for the Confit Duck Burger – pulled, spiced duck in roasting juices with melted Raclette cheese, rocket and plum tomato served in a brioche-style bun with a portion of French fries. Andy recommended the Beef Daube for me – slowcooked beef in a red wine sauce with a hint of cocoa served in a little red pot and accompanied by a celeriac purée, sugar snap peas and carrots. Andy was right, this was delicious – warming, tasty and very filling. Time was moving on and we thought we should make our way to the cinema next door (literally) but Andy convinced us to try the Dark Chocolate Ganache, Chocolate & Lime Sorbet; an indulgent chocolate dessert with a lime, chocolate & chilli sorbet. Thank goodness we weren’t allowed to leave – that was fabulous, the perfect end to a wonderful meal. Whether it’s a romantic meal, a family celebration or a group party, Café Rouge is such a thriving, charismatic and versatile restaurant that whatever the occasion, you simply can’t go wrong. Burford Garden Company

2014 Approved

Reviewed by Richard Rosser 16th November

Since 1977, Burford Garden Company, under founding director and Chairman, Nigel Johnson and his wife Louise, have established a unique experience for customers looking to combine the finest elements of home and garden in one location. Starting life as a simple plant nursery on a derelict farm in the Cotswolds, perched above the hills in the Oxfordshire countryside, Burford Garden Company is now one of England’s largest and most exciting shopping destinations.

I met with Louise and Burford’s Managing Director, Paul Gingell, to find out what makes this such a special place and Paul is adamant about one key factor, “we have a solid reputation which counts for everything when you are dealing with the general public. We’re also a family business which means this business is driven by the heart, with lots of consideration for everything that we do. Burford is a one off, despite constant requests to set up elsewhere and to have achieved the growth that we have with one outlet is quite a significant achievement of which we are all immensely proud.” If there was anything negative about the public perception of Burford, it’s that it is very much more than just a Garden Centre, as Louise picks up. “We’ve always been Burford Garden Company but a lot of people who haven’t been here and come here for the first time say how amazed they are that we do so much more than sell items for the garden. We’re very proud of the 50,000 hand-picked lines we sell which are sourced from all over the world, but we also put a lot of work into the Café which has superb chefs and is a very popular destination for our customers.” Staff are another fundamental ingredient for any retail operation and the staff at Burford are carefully selected so as to enhance the customer experience, explains Paul. “We employ with a great deal of care. Our staff are our mouthpiece and we ensure that they are on message with everything that we do. They help breed customer loyalty and they are a huge factor in our success.” As Burford embraces the digital age with a new website launching soon and expands its range with plans for further expansion, you have to admire what Nigel and Louise have created. Burford has set the benchmark for plenty of ‘wannabees’ around the world, with a customer list to die for and A list celebs popping in on a regular basis. After all, if Amanda Holden can wish she had shares in the business and the PM loves the fact that there is always something new going on, then they must be getting something right. As I left the interview and made my way back through this Aladdin’s cave of all things wonderful, a tiny Robin accompanied me on my way spreading the festive cheer. He obviously agreed with Emma Bridgewater who recently commented that Burford was “the best shop in the country”.
