Opening Exhibition at Blenheim Palace
‘A Great Estate at War – Land, Sea and Air’ 15th February – 21st April
To celebrate the First World War centenary year Blenheim Palace will open with a fascinating WWI exhibition ‘A Great Estate at War – Land, Sea and Air’ exploring the stories behind the family members and workers on the Blenheim Estate. The exhibition will be held between the Palace and the recently renovated Gallery Room in the Stables Courtyard from 15th February – 21st April 2014. Step back to a time fraught with conflict and hear stories of outstanding bravery from the front line, and how morale was kept high in times of darkness. Read fascinating accounts of the ‘flying cousins’, relations of The Marlborough family who served in the Royal Flying Corps in France flying over the trenches and behind enemy lines. See photos of the cousins, models of the aircraft they would have flown, and the clothing they would have worn to keep them warm whilst flying, including an original flying jacket which once belonged to one of the cousins, Oscar Guest. Oscar flew on many reconnaissance and combat missions over no-man’s land and behind the German lines. A brilliant addition to this part of the exhibition will be an original prop propeller from a Sopwith Camel. The Long Library became a convalescent hospital during the war. The exhibition will use medical equipment from the time, kindly donated by the Red Cross, to recreate a small section of this hospital. A detailed family tree will show that men from every branch of the family were either fighting in the air, in the trenches or at sea. The exhibition will also include a snapshot of Winston Churchill’s service in the front line and show how the formidable ladies of Blenheim made a remarkable contribution to the war effort. The war of course affected everyone who lived and worked on the Estate and the exhibition will give an insight into the changes brought by war, the heroism of the local people and the joy when they came home. The stories of the war across land, sea and air will be brought to life with a fascinating display of original props, scale models, trench, costumed characters, merchandise, video, and an incredible display of original paintings. It will bring to light a time in which many ordinary people did outstandingly courageous things, and will provide an incredible insight into life at war for all to enjoy. Web: www.oxfordinspires.org Oxford Inspires is working with Visit Oxfordshire to promote the many wonderful cultural events, shows, exhibitions and festivals that take place across the city and county. In 2014 we are remembering the outbreak of World War One in Oxfordshire. The Great War 1914-18 holds a special significance for Oxfordshire. The Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars were among the first territorial soldiers to arrive in France in September 1914 and were soon engaged with the enemy. Sir Winston Churchill was the commander of the Henley Squadron for several years. Fallen soldiers from today’s conflict in Afghanistan are repatriated at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. Info on arts and events: www.visitoxfordandoxfordshire.org/whats-on Events taking place in Oxfordshire in the first half of 2014 to commemorate the outbreak of The Great War include:
A special Exhibition at Blenheim Palace
Saturday 15th February to Monday 21st April: The Great War touched the lives of everyone who worked and lived in the Palace. The Duke’s family had members serving in all the armed forces, whether on land, sea or air and the Long Library served as a Convalescence Hospital for some of the first casualties of the War. www.blenheimpalace.com
Opening of the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum Oxfordshire’s very own military museum, opening in spring 2014, will offer unique insights from the personal recollections of soldiers and airmen involved in Conflict throughout the world and at the scene of all the major theatres of war. Oxfordshire Remembers 1914-1918 will open in August 2014. The exhibition uncovers significant moments from The Great War for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars as well as showing how the war affected county villages and towns. www.sofo.org.uk

Unearthed – Riches of the Romans & Anglo Saxons
Saturday 8th February – Sunday 27th April: Explore Roman & Anglo Saxon grave goods discovered in Oxfordshire. Through themes such as ‘story and saga’, ‘belonging’, and ‘status’ Unearthed examines the art in some of Oxfordshire’s archaeological treasures. Objects made during the first millennium AD will be displayed alongside contemporary creative responses to them. Star objects will be explored using state-of-the-art, new touchscreen cases and visitors will be able to watch films about the arts of Anglo-Saxon blacksmithing and Roman memorial sculpture. The exhibition also has 3 exciting talks:
'Woden and the Wolf-Kin: Anglo-Saxon Godly Forebears‘
Saturday 8th February: Stephen Pollington has been involved in writing, talking and broadcasting on Anglo-Saxon topics for over twenty years. His presentation will focus on the role of the god Woden in Anglo-Saxon tradition at the time of the conversion to Christianity, using archaeological and literary evidence.
‘The Anglo-Saxon burial at West Hanney and the origins of Wessex’
Saturday 8th March: With Professor Helena Hamerow. The discovery in 2009 of an opulent, garnetinlaid brooch at West Hanney has shed new light on the way in which power and identity were being expressed in the Upper Thames Valley in the seventh century AD, a crucial period in the formation of the West Saxon state. This talk will set the brooch and the burial in which it was found into this wider context.
‘The St Johns College Mass Burial: Massacre or Misfortune?’
Saturday 29th March: In 2008, Thames Valley Archaeology Service found the remains of around 37 young adult males in the top of a previously unknown Neolithic Henge monument in the grounds of St John's College, Oxford. They had been savagely slaughtered and dumped in the ditch around the end of the 10th C AD, which prompted the possibility that they were the physical remains of the historically-documented St Brice’s Day Massacre, in 1002. Subsequent isotopic analysis suggested that they were more likely to be a captured and executed raiding party.

The North Wall Arts Centre The North Wall is an arts centre in Summertown based on the campus of St Edward’s School. The transformation of a former Victorian swimming pool to a vibrant arts facility was overseen by London architects Haworth Tompkins and has won several awards. Completed in 2006, the new venue offers a fully flexible 200-seat theatre, a public art gallery and studios for dance and drama. The programme of events at the North Wall places emphasis on new and innovative work. Since opening to the public in 2007, it has attracted a number of wellestablished theatre companies including 1927, ATC, Out of Joint, Bush Theatre and Shared Experience as well as bringing the latest work from up and coming companies. Comedians who have appeared at The North Wall include Sarah Millican, Harry Hill and Julian Clary, to name but a few. In the past the venue has welcomed some fantastic musical acts, such as FrenchIrish chanteuse Camille O’Sullivan, Ralph McTell, The Unthanks and Spiers & Boden. The North Wall exists to provide opportunities for artists, young people and the general public to make and experience art of the highest quality. It aims to promote the notion of art as a tool for living; timely, relevant and socially engaged. Through the cutting-edge programming choices of the arts centre and ground-breaking outreach initiatives for aspiring young artists, the North Wall aims to offer both cultural enrichment for audiences, and an ‘arts laboratory’: a place where people of different ages, experience and disciplines can come together, make connections and explore new ideas and aesthetics. They have a focus on nurturing talent in young and emerging artists, and removing the barriers that prevent them from achieving meaningful careers in the arts. Their charitable arm, The North Wall Trust, provides a platform for this work, managing a range of home-grown artistic outputs, including vocational training and outreach projects, productions, co-productions and a range of participatory and educational initiatives for children, young people and the wider community. Funded primarily by Arts Council England and Oxford City Council, all of the exhibitions and many of the events, activities and workshops are free for visitors. In February the gallery presents a new exhibition of work by British artist Hannah Rickards. This major exhibition will occupy the entire gallery space at Modern Art Oxford and include the artist’s most recognised works to date alongside a new piece, Like sand disappearing or something., exhibited for the first time. Rickards’ meticulously researched and executed works explore the elusive landscape of perception, language and translation. Her attention is particularly drawn to natural phenomena such as thunder, mirage, and the aurora borealis. She closely examines these occurrences – and how we experience them – through moving image, audio and installation works. Considered one of the UK’s most important galleries of modern and contemporary art Modern Art Oxford has worked with some of the most illustrious names in the contemporary visual arts – as artists, exhibition organisers and directors. Some of the world’s greatest artists have held significant, often ground-breaking exhibitions in our Pembroke Street galleries, including: Richard Long (1971); Sol Le Witt (1973) Joseph Beuys (1974); Donald Judd (1995); Marina Abramovich (1995); Carl Andre (1997), Tracey Emin,(2002), Mike Nelsom (2004) Howard Hodgkin (2010), Graham Sutherland (2011) and Jenny Saville (2012) You can also relax in the café, purchase unique gifts in the shop, and participate in our vibrant events programme which includes talks, discussions, contemporary music and film nights. For formal dinners, canapé receptions, film screenings and parties, the gallery also offers a contemporary, fresh and flexible environment for an event in the heart of the city centre with six architecturally striking exhibition spaces.

Restaurant Review:
The Oxford Hotel
Reviewed by Ian Francis
2nd January 2014
The Oxford Hotel is a large hotel with some 160+ bedrooms and extensive function and conference facilities attracting a midweek business clientele. We stayed at the Oxford Hotel for a post-Christmas weekend leisure stay on the 4th January. We missed the Christmas and new-year festivities and enjoyed a calm and relaxing stay. Other guests at the hotel included couples and small parties all seemingly also enjoying a weekend leisure break. The hotel is well located, just two miles from the centre of Oxford, and easily accessed from the M40 and A34 road networks. Parking was free and plenty of it and when we entered the hotel out of the gusting wind and rain (you may recall the weather in early January) the foyer, bedecked with Christmas tree and decorations, was warm, bright, modern and spacious. The reception staff were polite and welcoming and we were able to check in immediately even though we were early. Our room was spacious and pristine, with neutral decor and red and gold soft furnishings. We had a Premium double room, with an especially comfortable king-size bed and finishing touches of bathrobes slippers and chocolates. The bathroom was gleaming and tastefully finished. The hotel offers an excellent room service, an all-day a la carte menu is available in the bar and lounge area and the Medio restaurant, which was modern and simple with clear lines and neutral dÊcor, provided an informal relaxed ambience in which to dine. Facilities at the hotel include a health and fitness suite, beauty rooms, squash court and small swimming pool with sauna and steam room. Throughout our stay and in all areas of the hotel the service was consistently good and the staff were friendly and responsive. You could spend a weekend in this hotel without stepping outside. Just relax and enjoy the food, leisure and beauty rooms and leave feeling completely rested. Or, combine it with a trip into Oxford and immerse yourself in the heritage of the famous university city and you will undoubtedly be amazed at the jewel that is Oxford. With the Oxford Hotel’s excellent proximity to the centre of Oxford and the regular and direct bus service close by, this an ideal base from which to explore the city of Oxford and experience a cultural extravaganza. In addition, The Oxford Hotel would be an excellent choice for the business and corporate sector. Aziz Indian Cuisine
Reviewed by Dan Channer
9th January 2014
If you were asked to name some Oxford institutions, you might say the Oxford University, John Radcliffe Hospital or Oxford United. However for a couple of my colleagues the Aziz Indian Restaurant on the Cowley Road is a bona fide institution and we set off for lunch with a sense of anticipation. They claim it is the best Indian restaurant in Oxfordshire and that is a tall order to live up to. After struggling to park – because Oxford hates motorists, it must be hard on these restaurants when there are no visitors parking places – we were bamboozled by the range of choice on the menu. That we opted for such mainstream dishes is a symptom of our lack of adventurous spirit rather than a comment on the choice available. There is something about lunchtime curry eating that curtails the desire for serious spice, perhaps it was the self-enforced absence of cold lager to put out the fire. The poppadums and sauces were demolished in minutes. Victoria likes mild curries and opted for a Chicken Murgh Nariyal, a dish similar to a korma with a creamy coconut sauce. The chicken was well cooked and the curry sauce just perfect for those who fear the vindaloo. Olivia’s Ghosht Rogan was lamb with tomatoes, green peppers and onions. I was sceptical about her culinary judgement as before the meal she declared that chickens feet are her favourite food (“They’re nice and ligamenty”) but she loved the well balanced flavours of the lamb. I opted for a Murgh Tikka Masala and it was a case study in how to cook this dish: the chicken was well barbecued in the Tandoor and then marinated in coconut, herbs, onions and spices. The result is you receive the curry craving but with some sweetness to balance it out – a bit like a good Jalfrezi. Aziz has been going for over two decades and it is no surprise that its blend of Indian and Bangladeshi flavours and good, honest service has proved a winner. All three of us agreed that our lunch was simply excellent and a world away from the formulaic and heavy sauces which characterise many Indian restaurants in the UK. Humans are creatures of habit and many of us stick to our favourite restaurants year in, year out. However we recommend that you break out of your eating comfort zone and head over to Cowley.

Cafe Coco
Reviewed by Dan Channer
5th Januray 2014
A cold, wet, grey and windy Sunday in January is enough to challenge any optimist. The Christmas revelry is a fading memory and mind and body are yet to fully acclimatise to the New Year. Hence it was a treat to walk into Café Coco at the foot of the Cowley Road and be welcomed by a beaming smile. As the four of us (wife and two kids aged 5 and 3) settled into a table we took in the bohemian-meets-funky-meets-bistro aesthetic. A glamorous Ushaped bar dominates the room with raised tables on either side. All chairs were occupied and the space buzzed with the easy chit-chat of people happy to be where they are. Half the guests seemed to be families, some with three generations and in all the time we were there we didn’t hear any children screaming, which could be an interesting example of positive peer group pressure. The children’s menu is good value at £6 for a drink, main course and pudding. The main course options are pizza, pesto pasta with tomatoes or chicken, or a super food salad with feta cheese. We have more chance of being abducted by aliens than persuading our offspring to order salad over pasta or pizza but I congratulate parents for whom this is an unforced choice. The drinks quickly arrived with pencils and paper and we set to work creating a pink dinosaur. The wife and I swapped gender stereotypes. I swerved the extensive range of pizzas and ordered the Seared Salmon Superfood Salad (leading by example…) and this was fantastic. The salmon was seared to perfection and served atop quinoa, kale, edamame beans, cranberries and chia seeds topped with a sesame oil dressing. For any ‘healthy’ dish to gain traction it must be delicious first and healthy second, and I am sure that by the end of 2014 this will still be one of the best things I have eaten all year. The wife went for a Half English with Cumberland sausages, fried eggs and wholegrain doorstep bread. Suffice to say little of her breakfast was offered to the rest of her family which is always a sign that someone is enjoying their food. The children’s pasta was well cooked but if anything the portion sizes were too much for two young girls. On a miserable day Café Coco offered a restorative oasis and our meal was threaded with calm, friendly service. 23 Cowley Road, Oxford, OX4 1HP Tel: 01865 200232 Web: www.cafecoco.co.uk www.inoxford.com

Restaurant Review:
The Jericho Tavern
Reviewed by John Hobart
8th January 2014
The Jericho Tavern has had a number of guises over the years, including being a Firkin pub (the ‘Philanderer and Firkin’) brewing its own beer in the 90s, but now it is back to what it does best, being an inviting, friendly pub in the heart of Jericho serving a wide range of beers and reliably good food, and testing your boundaries by putting a new twist on things you thought you knew! The pub offers more than food and beer, it also has a great beer garden, and puts on regular live music and entertainment ranging from local band and lindy-hop nights, to comedy and geek nights, and even burlesque. We headed to the Jericho Tavern for midweek dinner, so didn’t see it properly full, but still found it far from deserted and with a very enjoyable and relaxing atmosphere. The pub’s décor is a mix of classic pub with mixed furniture, blackboards and mirrors, alongside hints of the regular gigs with photos of current and classic musicians and performers. Friendly staff welcomed us and offered advice and help in selecting a predinner drink. The range of drinks on offer is as good as you’d expect – a wide range of beers on tap and a full selection of spirits, but there is a twist with a guest ale (‘Frosted Jack’ from the Dorset Brewing Company was there for us), fruit beers on tap, and even includes an English potato vodka! In addition the Jericho has a good range of wines at reasonable prices, including a particularly tasty New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc that went well with their fish cakes. The menu is longer, and the portions larger, than expected. At its heart are quality favourites with burgers, sausages and fish & chips. However, as with the drinks there is a twist: the burger is either ‘traditional’ or ‘pork and chorizo’, the fish & chips are made with a tarragon batter, and the sausages are Gloucester Old Spot. We went for delicious starters of couscous salad and beef brisket (we had to resist the temptation of a sharing board!) followed by Southern Fried chicken and wild salmon fishcakes, and a salted caramel chocolate tart that was too good to say ‘no’ to! Having not eaten at the Jericho before I was genuinely impressed, it stays true to its roots, but offers guests the choice of something different. The atmosphere is great, even on a mid-week evening (I had been there before on a buzzing Friday night!), the staff friendly, and the prices very reasonable – even more so if you go for one of their meal deals (2 course £8.50). I will definitely return either for a pint or a meal, or quite probably both!

Health & Beauty Review:
Monica Franke Osteopath
Reviewed by Matt Wright
10th December 2013
There's an expression in rowing that "A good big 'un is better than a good little 'un". However, fresh from treating the Oxford Mens Lightweight Fours, I'm not sure that Monica was ready for the equivalent of half the heavyweight boat resting upon her delicate shoulders. Let me rewind though. Monica usually works out of her newly-opened Bletchingdon clinic, but on Thursday mornings, consults at The University Club. So it was, that I entered the treatment room cautiously, my best rowing days (some less kind might say my worst) far behind me. Monica is used to treating a wide variety of people though, and soon put me at ease as we chatted through my ailment (a sprained calf), what caused it (over-heavy unit), and the usual medical 'pre-flight' checklist. Having ascertained that I was comfortable about being 'manipulated' should it be necessary (it wasn’t), we set about doing some gait analysis, to check my posture. "You have some of the best arches I've ever seen." Ha! I mean, I knew I was architecturally sound, but this was great - I was practically beaming from ear to ear at this compliment. Unfortunately, the rest of my structure was found to be crumbling at the edges, and after some flexing, some pulling, and a fair amount of deep groundwork, my hip flexors were found to be too tight. This was preventing me from pushing off from the ground properly. I was tempted to comment that I had never in my life been photographed with both feet off the ground, but I thought it best to let the illusion lie. I will expand upon the 'pulling' and 'pushing' though, to do justice to the comprehensive technical commentary Monica provided throughout. For example, what I thought was just my knee being flexed, was actually 'flossing', which is a specialized form of manipulation, encouraging the nerves to slide more easily through their own encasing or injured muscle tissue. Monica ended the session showing me some specific exercises for my injured calf, which went far beyond my hackneyed old routines. I'd never heard of the 'prone scorpion' before, but I'm fairly sure that I could never execute it as expertly as the ex-gymnast in front of me. Nice to see it done properly though. So, with a warm glow running up my legs, I bade Monica a fond farewell until the next time, thankful that this was one tale lacking a sting.

Wing Chun Dynamics
Reviewed by Daria Montella
14th November 2013
Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by our Wing Chun instructor for the evening, Wayne Bullock. He introduced us to the rest of the students, making us feel comfortable in a friendly and relaxed environment. After explaining the basics of the Wing Chun martial art we all focused on Sifu (instructor) Wayne's words and the fun began. I have taken several martial arts classes in the past but had never tried Wing Chun so was a bit worried about comprehension, but Wayne started us off with the basic moves, helping us carefully until we felt confident. It requires years and years of training to reach a high level in Wing Chun, but it took just one class to increase my energy and strength. Wayne showed us how strength doesn’t depend on how big we are or how much anger we have; strength is generated inside our bodies and manifests itself through the proper use of techniques. That is the reason why Wing Chun is a martial art suitable for everyone, whatever gender or body type. During the two hours class we were able to pick up the essentials of Wing Chun and the necessary techniques for self-defence. We did practical exercises with a partner to test what we'd learnt. Trying to learn from the other students and improving my own moves was challenging and exciting, and the people I was paired with were helpful and patient despite being much more experienced than me. The right balance between theory and practice gave us an excellent overview of Wing Chun and gave me the chance to fully immerse myself in the martial art. If you are a sport and martial art lover or you would like to try Wing Chun for the first time you will fall in love with this elegant art. I can assure you that after only two hours spent with Wayne and the Wing Chun Dynamics team all negative energy will leave your body and your spirit and you'll leave feeling full of energy and confident of yourself. The classes run every Thursday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at £10 per class.

Robert Stanley Opticians There are many qualities which make Robert Stanley Opticians stand out from the crowd, but two qualities in particular which define the company - clinical excellence and personal service. Many will recognise the Robert Stanley name as the market town and high street independent opticians with branches across Oxfordshire. What is perhaps not so well known is that the company dates back 60 years to when the company was founded by Walter William Robert Holland OBE and Donald Frank Stanley Salmon in 1953. In the 1990s, when a new breed of high street optician chains with huge advertising budgets and lucrative franchise deals entered the market, it resulted in a dramatic shift in customer service. Robert Stanley had to play smart to keep up with this new, cost cutting competition and took steps to revitalise the company with a generation of new opticians. This was when Stanley Salmon’s son Jerry, a dispensing optician and John Edwards, a dispensing and contact lens optician joined the business and remain directors of the company today. Seven years ago, they bought the business from Jerry’s father and embarked on an ambitious investment programme to respond to the ever-changing market environment. John Edwards says: “We refurbished all our branches, creating a modern design to provide a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere to make our customers feel at ease and enjoy the experience of choosing and trying on their glasses.” Modernity is key to the company’s overall philosophy, which is clear when you look at the number of designer brands in stock. Over 50% of frames are tailored, unique designs and often they only stock one piece from a top designer, so customers are unlikely to see someone else locally with the same frame. The stock is constantly moving and refreshed, always with the customer in mind, while Robert Stanley continually search for ways to improve and develop the business. They believe in delivering the right product for the individual requirements of each customer, and have developed close relationships with all of the major lens and frame manufacturers. Keen to provide the very latest designer eye wear, they visit trade shows around Europe, including the UK, Paris and Milan. Robert Stanley are always on the look out to develop partnerships with local businesses to help drive the business forward. The impressive consolidation of Robert Stanley over the past seven years is only the beginning. Looking to the future, the company intends to increase the range of specialist services for its customers and has long term plans to expand into other regions.

CAV City Audio Visual
Reviewed by Matt Wright
25th November 2013
The 'Operations Room' at City Audio Visual was a picture of calm efficiency, coordinating equipment and technicians between 7 different events taking place that evening - an extra sound system for the Christmas Light Festival at Waddesdon Manor, 2 plasma screens for a meeting at Oxford City Council, a complete audio visual package going out to Rhodes House, a PA package for Divinity School, audio equipment for a presentation at The Old Swan and Minster Mill... all despatched before I'd had chance to sit down. Once the rush had subsided, I caught a few moments with founder Peter Gunn, to find out more about his business. I’d been told that City Audio Visual, or CAV as it’s known to those in the industry, have been described as the 'Fourth Emergency Service' - is it always this busy here at CAV? Peter chuckled, “We do get a lot of last-minute calls. People usually know what they want to achieve, but find out that they don't know how to do it themselves, or lack the right equipment… often on the day of the event itself! That’s where we get called in.” The company has expanded to one of the pre-eminent audio-visual companies in Oxfordshire, whose distinctive silver vans are always seen around town. What is driving this increase in demand? "It's hard to pin it down to just one factor, but with the reliance nowadays on digital technology, we find that for Live Events, people love the security of having a technician onsite.” What about smaller events though, say 25 people? "We always have equipment going out on hire - it's a big part of our business. Where we like to think we're different is in the range of services we offer and the back-up we provide, whether it's a series of off-site presentations in a hired meeting room, or a full-blown award ceremony with live satellite links. For every client, we will advise on the suitability of the equipment for the chosen venue, and the level of support they are likely to require - hence, we can offer a service to suit every budget, and usually end up saving them money by avoiding costly mistakes.” So, if you've ever stood staring at a blank projector screen, wondering where your presentation has disappeared to, or waited nervously on stage whilst hotel staff scurried around to sort out the deafening feedback on your microphone, maybe you should think about calling the 'fourth emergency service' next time you put on an event?
