Samantha’s latest novel The Mime Order is the second book in a sextet that has been commissioned by Bloomsbury. Many have tipped the series as being the next Harry Potter or Game of Thrones. It promises to be awesome, as does the conversation between Andy and Samantha.

On a busy Sunday afternoon, I took the family to Browns in St Giles, a firm favourite of ours. Having grown up in Oxford, I remember the wooden bowl salads, the exciting buzz and, could I ever forget, the stunningly attractive waitresses.

Lead Article:
Serkis and Shannon at the Sheldonian Two extraordinarily talented creative people will be at Oxford’s stunning 300 year-old Sheldonian Theatre on 30th January to celebrate the publication of Samantha Shannon’s much anticipated The Mime Order, the follow up to her hugely successful The Bone Season (“gripped me to the marrow”). Joining Samantha will be Andy Serkis, best known for his acting roles as Gollum (“Oscar worthy”), King Kong (“redefines screen acting”) and Caesar from Planet of the Apes (“brings real heart and soulfulness”). He also has roles in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Age of Ultron, both of which will be released in 2015. Andy is the founder of Imaginarium Studios, which has purchased the rights to The Bone Season. Hosted by Blackwell’s, almost as famous now for its events as an iconic bookshop, the afternoon promises to be one of the hottest tickets at the chilliest time of the year! Shannon began writing The Bone Season whilst attending St Anne's College, Oxford and Oxford is a major part of the setting of the novel. She used the environment of St Anne's and the overall University of Oxford architecture and landscaping as an inspiration for the novel's Sheol, the Hebrew word for Hades, a penal colony setting. Shannon came up with the idea of a shanty town in between the colleges as a way of juxtaposing the squalor the humans were forced to live in and the grand colleges where The Rephaim (departed spirits) live on either side. Paige, the central character is one of the great heroines for the 21st Century. All of it is ripe material to be mined by Andy’s producer’s imagination and his Ealing based studios! Andy Serkis needs little introduction to international film fans however what is probably less well known is his role as a producer, director and his pioneering work in “motion capture”. His work in this area has been critically acclaimed, earning him recognition from many associations that do not traditionally recognize motion capture as "real acting". Serkis has received many prizes including an Empire Award, two Saturn Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award for this work. Samantha’s latest novel The Mime Order is the second book in a sextet that has been commissioned by Bloomsbury. Many have tipped the series as being the next Harry Potter or Game of Thrones. It promises to be awesome, as does the conversation between Andy and Samantha. The evening will be chaired by Victor Glynn, film producer, Oxford tutor and Blackwell’s bookseller who, as Chairman of Zenith Productions (producer of Inspector Morse) worked with Andy Serkis on the 1994 series Finney for ITV. Book your place now!

Michael Morpurgo 'War Horse: A Musically Accompanied Reading'
Michael Morpurgo will be appearing at Broad Street's prestigious Sheldonian Theatre to give a very special reading of 'War Horse'. He will be joined on stage by musicians Barry Coope and John Tams, who composed the original score for the movie adaptation. An appearance was made by Michael and a group of musicians at last year's FT Oxford Literary Festival for a performance of 'The Mozart Question' and he agreed to come back in the New year and for Blackwell's to bring a rousing rendition of 'War Horse' to Oxford. The concert will last for an hour and a quarter and will see Michael read passages from his celebrated novel to a moving, musical backing. The story describes the deadly chaos of the First World War as one horse witnesses the reality of battle from both sides of the trenches. Bombarded by artillery, with bullets knocking riders from his back, the author tells a powerful story of the truest friendships surviving in terrible times. 'War Horse' was adapted by Steven Spielberg as a major motion picture in 2011 and was also shown on stage in London's West End and on Broadway as a full action adaptation. We've stripped back the perfomance to bring the emotional story to the fore for a truly moving rendition of this wonderful tale. A new fully illustrated edition by Rae Smith has also just been released. Rae Smith was the stage designer of the award-winning National Theatre production. Her extraordinary illustrations bring to life a story of war and reconciliation with stunning vitality. We are offering tickets to this event for ÂŁ15 general entry, but are also offering a bundle which includes entry to the event and a hardback edition of 'War Horse' with Rae Smith's illustrations. This truly is an event not to be missed and begins our comprehensive and diverse year long events programme. The following day we will again be at the Sheldonian Theatre for an afternoon's discussion between author of 'The Bone Season' Samantha Shannon and actor and film-maker Andy Serkis. Samantha's sequel 'The Mime Order' is published on the 27th January. We host approximately 250 events throughout the year, ranging from local launches to high profile authors in a variety of venues throughout Oxford and regular in store signings. Friday 30th January at 7pm. Tickets: ÂŁ15. The Sheldonian Theatre. Available from Blackwell's, 48-51 Broad Street, Oxford. 01865 333623.

Drawn from private collections, including the Fang family collection, many of the works are on display for the first time in public. She moved to Hong Kong and continued to develop her art. She studied with the Lingnan School master, Zhao Shao’ang (1905–1998), and later with one of the most celebrated Chinese artists, Zhang Daqian (1899–1983). She lived and travelled in Europe and America, and attended both Hong Kong and Oxford Universities. She continued to work as a well-established artist into her eighties. The paintings in this display are from private collections in Asia and the UK; some Fang gave as gifts to her friends and colleagues during her time in Oxford. Admission: Free.

Born in Odessa in 1862, Pasternak is best known for his portraits, especially those of Tolstoy and his family. Nutritional Advice with Helen Money
Healthy eating at the office - When it comes to food there are many radical diets out there, many of which could harm our health. Aim for a healthy balanced diet. Include all macronutrient groups - don't cut out the carbs entirely this will leave you with little energy (especially if you are at the gym or local bootcamp as well!). However if you are at a desk all day you do not need the same amount of carbohydrate as an elite endurance athlete. Follow the ¼, ¼, ½ rule for meals - ¼ plate of carbohydrate, ¼ plate of protein and ½ plate of vegetables. Plus add in a healthy mid morning and mid afternoon snack.

Attraction Article:
January at Blenheim Palace Throughout January, visitors can enjoy walks in the park, taking in the spectacular views and discovering a wealth of wildlife and historical monuments. Discover the Grand Bridge and Column of Victory, and marvel at the ‘Finest View in England’ before heading into the Visitor Centre to warm up! The Oxfordshire Pantry will be serving delicious seasonal food to warm you up on a winter’s day, and every Sunday morning enjoy a relaxed brunch with smooth live Jazz music and a read of the newspaper. The Palace re-opening its doors on the 14th February begins an exciting and busy year full of events and activities, with something for everyone to enjoy. The year 2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of the death of Sir Winston Churchill. As his birthplace, Blenheim Palace will be host to a number of events and activities to mark this commemorative year. The newly reinvigorated permanent Churchill exhibition will open on 14th February, and will give visitors a real sense of our ‘Greatest Briton’ with a number of new artefacts, images and displays. Summer will see the opening of a memorial garden in mid-June, designed by British landscape architect Kim Wilkie and located next to the Temple of Diana - where Churchill proposed to his wife in 1908. The garden will feature a walkable timeline, allowing visitors to stroll through Churchill’s remarkable life, surrounded by his favourite plants and flowers. The specially designed ‘Walk in Churchill’s Footsteps’ trail, available from February, will give visitors a deeper insight into how he spent his time at Blenheim Palace, from his birth in the Palace and his time spent in the Long Library writing biographies of his ancestor, the 1st Duke of Marlborough, through to his death and burial at St Martin’s Church in Bladon, the neighbouring village. Other highlights of the year include Easter Entertainment for all the family in April, the first ever Blenheim Palace Food Festival in May, and the return of the ever-popular Blenheim Palace Flower Show in June.

Restaurant Review:
Browns
Bar & Brasserie
Reviewed by Richard Rosser
On a busy Sunday afternoon, I took the family to Browns in St Giles, a firm favourite of ours. Having grown up in Oxford, I remember the wooden bowl salads, the exciting buzz and, could I ever forget, the stunningly attractive waitresses. Time moves on and Browns has played host to some memorable occasions. The kids, now 16 and 13, have celebrated various birthdays at Browns, including Ed’s 10th when two of his best friends accompanied Ed in the giggles for most of the night, Abi’s 7th dressed as a princess sat on her grandfather’s knee amongst other wonderful memories. More recently the B4 Bike Ride from Edinburgh to Oxford, which took in Browns in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds and Nottingham, ended up in Browns Oxford to celebrate completing the 428 mile trip. So it is fitting that our first front cover image of our new Living In Oxford Magazine features a favourite of not just ours but thousands of Oxfordshire residents and visitors to our fantastic city. Whenever I step inside Browns I know I’m in good hands. Familiar faces meet you and show you to your table, knowledge of the dishes is second to none and you can always guarantee that the exciting buzz I referred to earlier is still there. Young couples, ladies having tea, children celebrating birthdays and even an 85 year old celebrating his birthday with family and friends (the balloons gave it away!) perfectly demonstrated that Browns hasn’t lost its universal appeal. The menu at Browns is diverse. With featured dishes each day of the week like Monday’s Slow Cooked Ribs, Iberico Black Pig and Apple burger on Tuesday, Duck Confit on Wednesday, Lobster Thursday, Friday’s Posh Surf and Turf and a fabulous selection of roasts that we all enjoyed, there’s something for everyone, every day of the week. In addition to these great dishes the chefs produce daily specials to reflect seasonality and their passion for food. Throughout the day Browns is as reliable as it was when I was an 8 year old back in the 1970’s and it’s no wonder the locals and tourists keep coming back. But look out for some changes in 2014 with a new ‘Best of British’ theme coming to the menu to give us even more reasons to return…… not that we need one!

Restaurant Review:
The Red Lion, Oxford
Reviewed by Matt Wright
It’s a well-known fact that fish spawn upstream. It was still a surprise though, to find this sister establishment to The Trout thriving up in Central Oxford, just round the corner from The Ashmolean. As we approached, the garden was buzzing with assorted drinkers, diners, and waiters - 100 covers can be served outside - about the same as inside where you can choose to eat in either the bar area (lively), the side area (more serene) or one of 2 private rooms (very chilled). Being of more advanced years, my guest and I were shown to the ‘more serene’ section, where the decor echoed that of the nearby famous museum, both in its classical colours and elegantly-framed charcoal drawings. Mark, the General Manager, came over to talk us through the wine list - it’s always nice to meet a fellow oenophile (wine lover I hasten to add), so I decided to go off-piste with the Scribbler Verdelho (delightful - dry with a mellow aftertaste) whilst my guest remained faithful to her trusted Sauvignon Blanc (OK, but a bit bland for me). Most of the wines were available by the bottle and the glass, apart from some towards the bottom of the list. This meant that I didn’t get to try Mark’s favourite Carignan ‘Flying Fish’, since my guest (a blonde) maintained that she ‘doesn’t do reds’ - the colours clash evidently. My prawn cocktail starter was beautifully presented in a tall glass on beach towel-type napkin (apologies to any Germans reading), with a slice of lemon on the side - I do like attention to detail. My guest meanwhile began with lamb koftas, the kitchen having already run out of her first choice - scallops - which perversely pleased me, there being few better indications of freshlyprepared food. Mains were the seafood linguine for me and sea bass for my guest. The linguine remains one of the Lion’s staples, although when chef Tom (also ex-Trout) came over to our table afterwards to enquire about our meal (another plus point), he mentioned that he does tweak it from time to time, the prawns being a recent addition. Good - keeps the regulars on their toes. Finally, special mention must go to the 'House-Sharer'; effectively 4 desserts for the price of 2, and as Mark commented, “Ridiculously good value!”, which seems an appropriate epithet for The Red Lion.

Jon Peart, Director of Savvy’s Construction division, took time out to update Living In Oxford on Savvy’s progress in 2014, its green credentials, and its plans for the immediate future. We’ve taken on a wide variety of work this year, often as the main contractor on behalf of commercial developers or private clients. This has seen us undertake a £3m care home project, sizeable residential developments in Oxford and Reading, plus a commercial development in Watlington, comprising 3 new-build and 2 refurbished barns. Gaining our CIOB accreditation was a major achievement: The Chartered Institute of Building’s ‘Chartered Building Company' accreditation is an industry-recognised standard - the Award photograph and plaque are currently hanging in our reception, we’re very proud of it. Green issues are important to the CIOB and vital to us: There are some matters we cannot determine – architects and designers often decide on the materials & specifications to be used - but we work hard to be environmentally-friendly by minimising site waste. We make this a responsibility of the site manager and all sub-contractors sign up to an agreement which meets Savvy’s strict criteria. Looking forward, Construction will drive our growth: The Maintenance & Renovation division deals with anything from small work up to major refurbishments of around £150,000. After that point, Savvy Construction picks up projects from £150k up to £3m, and it is this division that we are expecting to drive our growth for 2015. Our pipeline for the Construction division tends to be 9-12 months, so we can already see 2015 is shaping up well. Savvy are renowned for delivering a quality product and our whole ethos is around collaboration and teamwork, which is reflected in the amount of repeat business we manage to secure. This means we have plans in place for steady growth over the next 3 years. During 2014, we’ve already increased our employee count by almost a third to 50. We’d like to increase this further and are currently recruiting surveyors and site managers for both divisions. With our infrastructure firmly in place and a lot of our work coming from repeat business we’re confident we’ll be able to grow strongly beyond 2015.
