Hopefully you’re not suffering from World Cup fatigue or arguments in the house over the importance of watching Honduras over a good film (after all you can watch a good film anytime but how often do you get to see the mighty Honduras in action!) Well July is here and only 13 days left of the greatest show in the World, but if there was a World Cup for Shakespeare productions, then I think Oxford would have every right to stake a claim. There are four productions taking place in Oxford between now and September – The Oxford Shakespeare Company’s ‘As You Like It’ at Wadham College, Tomahawk’s ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’ at Oxford Castle, ‘Twelfth Night’ brought to you by The English Rep, also at Oxford Castle and finally Creation Theatre’s ‘Macbeth’ at Lady Margaret Hall. Situated off the A420, or Route 420, near Buckland in Oxfordshire, the first permanent Cherry Pie Diner opens its doors in early June 2014. The team will be serving a delicious menu of authentic American diner food including all day breakfast items such as sweet waffles, pancakes, steak and eggs and breakfast skillets. The lunch and dinner menu features a mouth-watering array of burgers and hot dogs alongside regional and State specialities such as the Boston Butt Hoagie. Families can also take advantage of Early Bird family dinner deals including pot roasts and meat loaf, and half price drinks and shakes during Happy Homework Hours. There’s also plenty to keep you entertained whilst you eat. There will be live bands playing hits from the 50’s and 60’s every Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Diners will be able to catch the England, USA and Mexico World Cup Games. There’s big celebration plans for Independence Day on the 4th July and a series of summer event for all the family. What's more, from early July visitors will be able to get a premium hand car wash and valet at the first Chariots Car Spa. The Canterbury Tales

In 1818 St Martin’s church was rebuilt complete with tower. However, the church, apart from its tower, was demolished in 1896. The tower is all that remains today. Two ‘quarter boys’ who hit the bells at every quarter hour adorn the east facade of the church clock. Climb up 99 steps to get a sweeping view of Oxford’s spires. St Michael at the North Gate is the oldest Church Tower in Oxford and is definitely worth a visit! THE BAD - Local Asparagus
Bye Bye Grass…….English Asparagus is long gone and we need to wait another year for the return of this delicious produce. Although we do everything we can to ensure the quality of all our produce is the best available. Now is a very difficult time for the humble Carrot. We are seeing some poor finish on the ends of product sometimes, this is due to the gap in the season we see every year between March and August. End of Main Crop and waiting for the start of new season means we have imported products to fill the gap, which can mean they are a little older than normal and the skin finish is not as sturdy. Rest assured we will be vigilant, but if you can use an alternative this may be the best option at the moment. Not Swede or Parsnip though! See the ugly…..

We are in the height of Summer and although available, Parsnips and Swede are not the best quality and to boot they are loadsamoney. Barbecued Swede is vile anyway!! Try some of the summer veggies instead.

Oxford’s High Street houses many treasures, but none more than Sanders, a quaint and unusual print shop steeped in history much like the rest of the beautiful city of Oxford. Upon entering the medieval building dating back to the 16th Century, I am blown away with the surprising size of not only the space, but also of the collection of rare prints and stunning maps. I am greeted by passionate and knowledgeable staff, and feel comfortable exploring at my own pace knowing that they are ready to help source prints of particular interest if need be. There are very few general print shops left in the UK, however those of us living in, or visiting Oxford have the privilege to see first-hand one of the largest print sellers in Britain, and the only one of its kind outside of London still trading. Everything about Sanders ignites a passion for history, from the outstanding building with its creaky wooden floorboards to the vast stock of more than 30,000 antique items some dating back to the 16th Century. This gem of a shop carries something for everyone, from caricatures, portraits, and maritime prints to maps, mezzotints and sporting images all in stunning condition, perfect for gifts, art work, educational references and collections. Many presume that fine art print is admired only by the older generation; however Sanders are bringing their creative flair into modern times by adding contemporary pieces which are bold and fun, including prints sourced from Oxford printmakers such as Joseph Winkelman and Ben Pritchard with spectacular aquatints, etchings, and linocuts, all unique in their own way. If vibrant colours are of interest, Sanders has a wide selection of contemporary graphic prints including alphabet illustrations, satires and glass fronted box sculptures displaying three-dimensional imagery, by John Dilnot. As I wander further around the quirky range of items, the increasingly popular selection of 18th, 19th and early 20th Century Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints catch my eye. Not only are they amazingly graphical pieces, but Sanders is one of the only galleries selling these masterpieces outside of the capital. The artwork is delicate and opulent in shades of vibrant reds, calming blues and luscious greens. The prints illustrate beautiful blooming flowers, traditional Asian landscapes and elegant geishas, all definitely worth viewing to admire their fine details. It’s not an easy task to describe such a unique shop; you truly do have to visit to see its appeal. So, head to Sanders this summer and you will find the treasures you have always been searching for. It was a wet and windy Wednesday night in early June… but the welcome, and the buzzy atmosphere on entering dispelled any possible gloom caused by the weather. We were swiftly settled at a cosy table for two, and despite other tables being close by the general level of happy buzzy chat meant we didn’t feel others were over hearing. A blackboard proclaims the restaurant’s provenance and proud independence and despite it being a mid-week evening, downstairs was full and a constant stream of clearly happy customers mounted and dismounted the stairs to the upper levels. One is tempted to say this restaurant hardly needs a review, as it appears rarely less than busy. I haven’t been to a French Bistro since the 1960’s and was somewhat nervous that the evening would be a time warp – not so! The welcome, swift service, delicious and seasonal starters – oh and a delightful bottle of St Emilion, put us swiftly at ease enjoying each other’s company – and that surely is what every good restaurant should set out to do – provide a backdrop for conviviality and enjoyment of both good company and good food. And what about the degustations? There is nothing worse, in my opinion, than one’s relatively simple questions about the wine list and the menu being handled without knowledge or confidence. Not so here - a clearly knowledgeable waitress took our orders for both. We were evidently in sound and confident hands here, and our enjoyment of the evening was even further enhanced. A basket of fresh baguette swiftly appeared as did the wine. With a glass of the St Emilion to hand, we settled to await our starters… not for very long though as within minutes they appeared - wonderful local asparagus and a brochette of langoustines whose very scent of freshness enhanced our mood even further. Neither of us could resist the Rib Eye, perfectly cooked… one with frites and the other with new potatoes, one with béarnaise and t’other with the pepper sauce – both equally delicious and cooked to perfection on the grill… Rib eye is surely my favourite cut of beef and this was pretty near perfection on the plate. All desserts are home made and neither of us would normally succumb to a pud… however a Tarte d’Abricot and a Nougat Glacé were observed at a nearby table and neither of us could resist. Both were delicious! For me the one thing that stood out was the eclectic nature of the diners. From a table of octogenarians, through trendy pre theatre goers, a number of students and a single diner or two – all clearly comfortable and enjoying their evening. So it remains to thank Pierre Victoire for creating the perfect ambience, food and wine for me to highly recommend this delightful restaurant to all you good readers. It’s a well-known fact that fish spawn upstream. It was still a surprise though, to find this sister establishment to The Trout thriving up in Central Oxford, just round the corner from The Ashmolean. As we approached, the garden was buzzing with assorted drinkers, diners, and waiters - 100 covers can be served outside - about the same as inside where you can choose to eat in either the bar area (lively), the side area (more serene) or one of 2 private rooms (very chilled). Being of more advanced years, my guest and I were shown to the ‘more serene’ section, where the decor echoed that of the nearby famous museum, both in its classical colours and elegantly-framed charcoal drawings. Mark, the General Manager, came over to talk us through the wine list - it’s always nice to meet a fellow oenophile (wine lover I hasten to add), so I decided to go off-piste with the Scribbler Verdelho (delightful - dry with a mellow aftertaste) whilst my guest remained faithful to her trusted Sauvignon Blanc (OK, but a bit bland for me). Most of the wines were available by the bottle and the glass, apart from some towards the bottom of the list. This meant that I didn’t get to try Mark’s favourite Carignan ‘Flying Fish’, since my guest (a blonde) maintained that she ‘doesn’t do reds’ - the colours clash evidently. My prawn cocktail starter was beautifully presented in a tall glass on beach towel-type napkin (apologies to any Germans reading), with a slice of lemon on the side - I do like attention to detail. My guest meanwhile began with lamb koftas, the kitchen having already run out of her first choice - scallops - which perversely pleased me, there being few better indications of freshlyprepared food. Mains were the seafood linguine for me and sea bass for my guest. The linguine remains one of the Lion’s staples, although when chef Tom (also ex-Trout) came over to our table afterwards to enquire about our meal (another plus point), he mentioned that he does tweak it from time to time, the prawns being a recent addition. Good - keeps the regulars on their toes. Finally, special mention must go to the 'House-Sharer'; effectively 4 desserts for the price of 2, and as Mark commented, “Ridiculously good value!”, which seems an appropriate epithet for The Red Lion.

The Anchor

I first met Julian Rosser (proprietor of The Anchor) many years ago when we appeared together on a very low budget reality television programme. I won’t mention its name for fear of someone finding a copy on-line. My role was to contrive a series of challenges for an aspiring restaurateur, culminating in him acting for one night as manager of Branca, which at that time was Julian’s first business in Jericho. Safe to say my performance was more than a touch awkward and stilted. Whilst several friends commented that perhaps my future did not lie in the media, they were intrigued to know why I appeared so relaxed and fluent in the final scene, when I was declaring my judgement on the achievements of the amateur restaurateur. Of course, the truth had little to do with my increasing confidence on screen, and much more to do with sharing two bottles of Montepulciano with Julian. Needless to say there are no amateurs working in Julian’s latest Jericho venture, The Anchor. We were greeted by Lucy, whose warm and professional approach characterised that of all in the team. Justine Rosser (Julian’s wife) is responsible for the new interior, which is looking stunning. A major refurbishment involving reconfiguring the bar, removing the patterned carpet in favour of a beautiful black and white tiled floor and replacing the dark wood panelling to expose the walls, now painted in fresh tones, has lifted the rather laden atmosphere and created a crisp, contemporary space. Chef Fiona Cullinane has created a simple menu that showcases high quality ingredients. We enjoyed starters of warm asparagus, which retained a ‘bite’, accompanied by a chilled tomato salsa; potted Inverawe smoked salmon with pickled cucumber and toasted sourdough; and we couldn’t resist sharing a haggis scotch egg, which lived up to expectations. I can also vouch for the roast beetroot, which has been my choice on previous visits. Prepared in the Josper, a grill that reaches excessively high temperatures, our flat iron corn fed chicken and 6oz rib eye had a fantastic charcoal flavour. A pannacotta with caramelised orange, and a Colston Bassett Stilton and Montgomery Cheddar were the perfect finish to an outstanding meal. Barman Paul had guided us through the wine list, and his recommendation of an Adega Vila Real 2011, from Douro in Portugal, was the ideal accompaniment. Despite the dramatic changes to its dining room, it is reassuring to see that The Anchor is still a pub which attracts the local community. Whether it’s a family with children, a lone drinker enjoying a quiet pint whilst reading a newspaper, or a group of friends out for a celebratory evening – all are welcome, and all are made to feel at ease. In short, the new look Anchor, the latest creation from Julian Rosser, is a refreshing addition to the Oxford dining scene. Café Aloha

Our host Emma, describes her establishment as ‘a café by day and a restaurant by night’ and provides an excellent example of maximising their business in this locally placed eaterie. Café Aloha is situated in the heart of the local community in Botley, Oxford. Nestled in the corner of the small local shopping precinct, you could be forgiven for missing this little gem. Offering a cafe experience during the day, you can enjoy a wholesome or traditional start to the day with a hearty breakfast from the menu or a delicious lunch with choices ranging from a healthy open sandwich, tapas or salad. Café Aloha is visited by people from both the local community and from local businesses, offering an ideal setting for a breakfast meeting, for lunch with friends or a coffee and pastry after shopping. If you want to dine here in the evening, you will have to make a reservation as Café Aloha is busy and continues to grow in popularity. The restaurant was fully booked on the evening we dined here and the ambience was very relaxed with diners enjoying food, excellent service and conversation. If you like to be entertained while eating, Café Aloha features live music on Saturday evenings. The food is an eclectic range of English, tapas, pizza, pasta, bistro and grill and the food is all prepared on the premises. The portion sizes are generous and feature and excellent combinations of flavours. There is also a specials board with an excellent range of dishes that change daily. Emma bakes all of the pastries on offer and in response to demand from customers, there is also an excellent range of gluten free pastries and desserts available. For dessert, we enjoyed an unusual Millionaires Shortbread Cheesecake and because I found choosing from the dessert menu so difficult, I tried two desserts: Warm Peach and Honey Sponge and a Clotted Cream Rice Pudding which were both mouth-wateringly delicious. There is a good selection of beer and wine and a cocktail menu. A refreshing bottle of Prosecco from Treviso - the Dolomite region of Northern Italy – was an unexpected nostalgic treat for us as we have enjoyed many holidays in this part of Italy, including our honeymoon. We have eaten in Café Aloha several times and for different occasions as we live in the local vicinity. It offers excellent friendly and efficient service and responds well to its diverse clientele. Emma and Charlie evidently serve their local community but such is their reputation that it is attracting much wider custom. Sunday is a perfect day for a lazy brunch, and a good place to go is the Rose. Its prime location on High Street makes it ideal for a leisurely
breakfast before shopping at one end of the street or going punting on the river at the other end.
Make sure you arrive hungry, as the full English breakfast is both delicious and generous, featuring homemade sausages (declared ‘some of the best I’ve ever eaten’ by my guest), bacon, fried eggs, hash browns, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans and a pile of toast. For a lighter option, the scrambled eggs with chives also come highly recommended, or try the buttermilk pancakes. The Rose takes pride in using seasonal produce and fresh, organic, responsibly sourced ingredients, and it certainly shows, from the meat used in the sausages to the free range eggs to the freshly squeezed orange juice. There’s also excellent coffee, or choose from the impressive range of teas from around the world, including a Darjeeling tea from the Himalayas that’s described as the ‘champagne’ of teas. If you want to visit later in the day, lunch options range from a variety of ciabatta sandwiches to hearty fare such as risotto and lasagne, as well as daily specials, or go for afternoon tea, and enjoy finger sandwiches, scones and cakes- also homemade, of course. The chocolate and almond cake is especially worth a mention, and will certainly satisfy chocoholics. The Rose also caters for private functions- whether it’s a birthday or a business meeting, it can be accommodated. With its consistently mouth-watering food, it would be easy to linger here a while and forget all about that shopping...

The Tree Hotel at Iffley

Asian or European? That is the culinary question faced when dining at The Tree Hotel. Nestled in the leafy Iffley village, this pub restaurant is a popular retreat with the locals, who were already warming the seats in the bar early Tuesday evening when we arrived. We received a warm welcome from manager Namit upon arrival who showed us to our table and took our drinks orders. My dining partner was pleased to find a choice of real ales in the bar while I settled for a fruity Pinot Grigio. With all the charm of a typical English pub, there is a lovely friendly ambience about the place which makes you feel instantly relaxed. With specialist European and Indian head chefs, the menu covers a wonderful selection of dishes from around the world. We munched on papadums with a choice of chutneys, pickles and sauces while we deliberated which continental offering we fancied. I was instantly struck by the Mozzarella Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms coated in a tempura batter while my partner opted for the Sesame King Prawns. The mushrooms were delicious and the tempura batter was light and crispy, adding great texture to the dish. The prawns were also very tasty with a fresh and fragrant lime & lemongrass flavour. Despite being tempted by the pan seared duck breast, I opted for the Mustard Fish Curry and my partner chose the Lamb Rogan Josh. I can handon-heart say it was the best fish curry I have ever tasted. I’m normally drawn to hot and spicy dishes, but the delicate spicing of this dish and beautifully soft melt-in-your-mouth Pangasius fish from the Indian Ocean left me scraping the bowl for every last drop. Equally impressive were the desserts, a lovely Apple Crumble for my partner and a Chocolate Fondant for me. Worth the 15min cooking time as it gave us a chance make some room in the belly! The Tree Hotel caters menus for both lunches and dinner with regular weekly offers such as Mondays 2 for 1 on mains, Gentlemen’s Night on Tuesdays and Ladies night on Wednesdays for 50% discounts. Their Sunday 'eat as much as you like' international buffet with carvery is extremely popular, so best to book in advance. They also run a range of events and were promoting their International Wine Tasting evening in June during our visit. This unassuming pub restaurant will quickly exceed your expectations from the cheery welcome and fabulous service through to the delicious cuisine. Anyone for tennis? Get a taste for tennis this summer at North Oxford Lawn Tennis Club. For juniors the club offers a unique opportunity to get into competitive tennis early with the North Oxford Tennis Academy. To support the teams the club hosts weekly team practice nights while singles ladders and box matches are also in place allowing players to make their individual mark. Friendly fixtures are also organised in the summer months. Social tennis forms the heart of the club with regular club nights encouraging members to mix in and play one another.
