Love’s Labour’s Lost
by Oxford Shakespeare Company 28th June - 18th August in The Gardens of Wadham College, Oxford The Oxford Shakespeare Company, acclaimed specialists in open-air and site specific theatre, present in the beautiful surroundings of the Gardens of Wadham College Oxford: William Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost Director Nicholas Green. Original composition by Nicholas Lloyd Webber. Meet a young, louche King and his three wastrel cohorts. Swept along by the indulgences and hedonism of a childhood lived in the 1960s, they are now stumbling into 1970s manhood. One morning after yet another late night, young King Ferdinand decides - Enough! Time to set aside such wasteful antics. Time for them to get serious, to turn to the scholarly life, to forswear all non-academic pleasure, and above all to forswear women. So how do we think their resolve will fair when a certain young Princess with her own three lovely companions turn up for an audience with the King. Watch as four young men and some of Shakespeare’s most colourful comic characters trip over themselves, not to mention their words, in this most funny, engaging and musical of comedies. The Oxford Shakespeare Company was founded in 2002 and has presented thirty productions and achieved wide critical and audience acclaim. Alongside its summer residence at Wadham College, Oxford each summer, the OSC has performed at many illustrious venues including: Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace Gardens, the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, alongside bespoke commissions for The Tower of London and the Banqueting House at Whitehall. We have a reputation for excellence in our field, receiving several Time Out Critics’ Choice and numerous 4*& 5* accolades from national and local press. We are particularly well known for the original music that accompanies all our productions, predominately written by composer Nicholas Lloyd Webber. We are delighted to be performing again this year at the Wilderness Festival, Cornbury Park. “The Oxford Shakespeare Company treat us to a hugely enjoyable production of Twelfth Night – a light-hearted romp perfect for alfresco entertainment.” - The Oxford Times ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 2015 (Twelfth Night) “A wonderful way to pass a sunny evening, this is a must -see show for the summer.” - The Oxford Times ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 2014 (As You Like It) “A perfect evening” - The Times 2010 (Private Lives) Ticket prices £13 - £23. Storms, War and Shipwrecks: Treasures from the Sicilian Seas Tuesday 21st June: Storms, War and Shipwrecks tells the extraordinary story of the island at the crossroads of the Mediterranean through the discoveries made by underwater archaeologists. For 2500 years, Sicily was the place where great ancient civilizations met and fought. Its rich and varied island culture has been marked by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans. This major summer exhibition explores the roots of this multicultural heritage with over 200 spectacular and unusual objects rescued from the bottom of the sea. From bronze battering rams once mounted on the prows of Roman warships to the marble pieces of a Byzantine ‘flat-pack’ church; from intrepid prehistoric traders to the enlightened rule of the Norman kings, the exhibition illuminates the movement of peoples, goods and ideas. The treasures on show in Storms, War and Shipwrecks have been uncovered over the last sixty years since the advent of SCUBA diving equipment which made possible sustained underwater exploration. While some of the objects are chance finds pulled up by local fishermen, most are from shipwrecks excavated by archaeological divers. Visitors to the exhibition will be taken on a journey through Sicily’s fascinating history. This story will be told exclusively through spectacular finds from the sea, because it is the sea which has always been the lifeblood of the island’s unique and diverse culture. Tickets: cost £10/£9 concessions (free for Ashmolean members, Oxford University students and under-12s) and can be purchased at: http://www.ashmolean.org/exhibitions/tickets/

Yevgeny Sudbin Piano Friday 10th June: Scarlatti Sonata in D minor, Scarlatti Sonata in C major, Scarlatti Sonata in D minor, Beethoven Piano Sonata no. 32, Mozart Lacrimosa (arr. Sudbin), Ravel Gaspard de la nuit As one enraptured critic commented, it does Yevgeny Sudbin a disservice to describe him as a ‘young artist’. Although still in his 30s, his youth is irrelevant. His recitals and discs have been rapturously received and bear the hallmarks of greatness, with favourable comparisons being made to Horowitz amongst others. Here he presents a recital opening with the crystalline inventiveness of Scarlatti and culminating in Gaspard de la Nuit, as famous for its depiction of Aloysius Bertrand's exotic poetry as it is infamous for its virtuosity. Ravel's masterpiece has been described as 'like a realistic dream, a lucid world of darkness and terror evoked through refinement and detail.' A Room with a Riverside View Does Oxford finish at the Railway Station? Go west a short distance and you will find The River Hotel overlooking the River Thames and Osney Island conservation area beside Osney Bridge, just a short stroll away from the City Centre. The hotel is ideally situatied along the Thames tow path where you can catch glimpses of the City towards Binsey and Wolvercote, or Osney Lock, Folly Bridge punts, College boats and beyond. The hotel building is owned by an Oxford University college, built in the 1870s and lived in by the Master-builder Mayor of Oxford, Thomas Kingerlee. The company and family still trade in Oxford to this day. It was formerly known as The Bridge House Hotel in the 1930s (when it boasted having “refrigeration”) and cost the equivalent of just £1.75 for a night’s B&B! The hotel was later known as Ehrsam Hotel, and finally The River Hotel. It is run traditionally and, to quote a recent guest from New York, is “quintessentially Oxford”. All bedrooms offer their own bath, shower and toilet, the usual in-room expectations of Freeview TV, clock / radio, hair-dryer, and a kettle for tea and coffee. There is also free wi-fi and ample car parking on site for residents. “What time is breakfast?” is a frequent enquiry – This will be the title of owner Pat Jones’ book, as and when she gets down to writing it! The hotel rate includes table service breakfast overlooking the Thames, cooked to order with a generous buffet to start. The hotel welcomes guests from far and wide, whether visiting Oxford for business, academia, or family etc., mid-week and weekenders, Thames walkers and tourists of course. Everyone is welcome! The hotel’s slogan, “Large enough to be comfortable, small enough to be friendly”, matches the hotel's image perfectly - Offering good value with friendly service. Since 2007 ‘Visit England’ has awarded the hotel “**Metro Grading”. With good facilities, great rates, and a perfect location for dining out in the City (the Thames path being right on the doorstep), it’s all about Location, Location, Location!

Restaurant Review:
Aziz Reviewed by Sue & Colin Rosser 12th March
It was a beautiful evening in May when Sue and I went to the new Aziz that has been recently opened at The Chequers in Headington Quarry. This is the first of the Aziz’s franchises, since their move from the Cowley Road where they have been for the last 30 years. Now in the new location there is ample parking and a lovely garden that can provide any number of covers over and above the present 50 that are available in the main restaurant. Aziz has arrived in Headington Quarry like a breath of fresh air and is accompanied by the delightful Shultana Shirin who is running the restaurant for him. The Aziz brand is well known to most of you and our visit to the new establishment did not disappoint. When we arrived there was a real buzz to the atmosphere and almost all the tables were taken. Fortunately Shirin had reserved a spot for us although we were nearly tempted to take a table in the garden. The sun however was beginning to go down and we are not a s hardy as we were! The service was prompt and discreet as always and we immediately had a plate of papadums together with a mixture of pickles, including mango chutney which is my favourite. Sue had a glass of the Dea del Mare Pinot Grigio Blush from Italy and I had a pint of the Indian Cobra Beer. To start with we both had lamb, Sue chose the Bahari Gosht Chops, lamb chops marinated and cooked in the clay oven and I had the Gosht Tikka which were marinated pieces of lamb similarly cooked. For mains, Sue was attracted to the Hash Malai which was duck breast with coconut milk and a touch of medium mustard. I went for the Murgh Kaliya, recommended by Shirin, which was chicken with black pepper in a medium creamy sauce. We had Peshwari Nan Bread, Pilau Rice and Sak Aloo (Spinach with Potaoes) to accompany the main meal. Talk about a banquet, the portions are very generous but both of us commented on how delicate the meats were and how everything was cooked to perfection. We are not great dessert eaters so we passed on that and finished with black coffee. All in all it was a very pleasant experience and for the future Aziz and Shirin will be producing a completely new menu by the beginning of June. So we are in for a treat, especially with the better weather coming and the prospect of dining in the delightful gardens.

Nightlife Review:
Angels Cocktail Bar
Reviewed by John Hobart Friday 24th April
Oxford offers a choice of venues where you can sip a cocktail from hotels to restaurants and clubs to bars. The challenge is to be something special, and Angels succeeds with a menu of vintage classics and modern creations served with the glamour of the silver screen. Located on trendy Little Clarendon Street, a short walk from the city centre, Angels immediately feels a bit different. As you step in you are greeted by a member of staff on the door and Bette Davies, Katharine Hepburn and Greta Garbo on the walls, while the polished red bar and gilt-framed mirrors give a sense of timeless glamour. When a space is comfortable with itself, it is easy to relax within it. This was evident from the range of people there at 6pm on a Saturday with younger and older couples on dates or having pre-dinner drinks and groups of friends of all ages meeting and laughing. The bar had a great feel to it, friendly and relaxed with everyone there to enjoy the moment. The cocktail menu is not overly-long, but is guaranteed to have something different and the staff are great at giving advice! There are the classics that you’ll recognize (Cosmopolitan, Mojito, Daiquiris and Sours), but alongside them are Vintage cocktails and Angels Lab. The Vintage section offers cocktails rediscovered from old books or films, like the Yokohama Romance from the Romance nightclub in Japan where brandy, cherry brandy, lime and passion fruit are combined in a martini glass to create a rich fruity concoction, or the more delicate than expected Corpse Reviver of gin, Cointreau, vermouth, lemon and absinthe. The Angels Lab showcases the mixing skills of the bar team who love creating new drinks for customers and adding them to their repertoire and, for the most popular, to the menu. New favourites include the Pear and Cardamom sidecar – muddled cardamom seeds shaken with Xante pear brandy, Cointreau and lemon giving a subtly spiced cocktail with an exotic undertone – and the now famous Tiramisu, which tastes like the dessert in a glass with layers of espresso, Kahlua and Mozart white & dark chocolate liqueurs. In addition to serving drinks Angels offers afternoon classes in how to make them, and a venue you can hire for private parties. For Angels it is all about the customer enjoying themselves, and that means they are flexible, creative, friendly, and well worth visiting!

Health & Beauty Review:
The Spa at Jurys Inn Oxford
Reviewed by Gillie Coghlan 7th May
I visited the Spa at Jurys Inn Oxford and had their hour-long aromatherapy massage with Spa Manager, Rosie. I was welcomed on arrival by Rosie and a young man at the spa reception, which is on the first floor of the hotel, through the bar, and was asked to complete a health form. Both were very chatty and friendly and the reception area is furnished with comfortable sofas for relaxing before your treatments; the pool and gym are alongside reception, with sauna off of the treatment room. Rosie took me to the treatment room, which is comfortably warm, softly lit and inviting, with a large, heated massage table. She left me to undress and lie on the table, with pleasant and relaxing music playing. On her return, Rosie asked how I like my massages and I requested fairly firm. The hour-long massage, starting on my front, arms and legs and followed by a glorious back massage, was extremely enjoyable and de-stressing; I could have stayed all day! Afterwards Rosie left me to slowly get dressed and brought me water, advising me to drink more throughout the day. Rosie was trained at the Oxford International College of Beauty and has many years of experience. I would recommend the Spa at Jurys Inn Oxford for a treat or 'just because you're worth it'! The full menu includes scalp treatments with essential oils; deep massage for tired feet; detoxifying wraps; various moisturising facials; and specialist treatments for men too... Or you can opt for a whole Luxury Pamper Day with a variety of treatments. Spa Packages: •
