Packed full of goodies for the whole family and friends, this is THE shop for souvenirs of Oxford. Immerse yourself in the history and tradition of Oxford and come away with something special to remind you of your time in our beautiful city. Once again we’ve got a great line up of reviews to indulge you. Further up High Street, we focus on Antiques on High, an Aladdin’s Cave featuring twenty five dealers offering huge amounts of experience across a wide range of areas including silver and jewellery, books and music and much more. Also featured this month: City Sightseeing, Flowers@Oxford (an immense flower festival this summer at Lady Margaret Hall), The Royal Oxford Hotel, Aziz Express, and the luxurious and relaxing Westwood Hotel. There’s also our second Roots feature and your usual listings and other features. Enjoy June and don’t forget the suncream!

University of Oxford Shop

Reviewed by Matt Wright Friday 9th May

It was Oxfordshire Art Week when I visited the UOS. The walls were covered in original local artwork, ranging from £30 prints (Mavis Burley street scenes are particularly popular) to £500 originals. I asked Chloe, the bubbly sales assistant, about the most popular items. "Postcards (3 for £1), mugs decorated with the emblems of all the Oxford Colleges (tankards for £18), and hoodies - all always in demand." Particularly busy times of year? "Holidays & half-terms get very hectic, but different items have their own cycles - for example, we can't keep enough official degree frames (£50 A4-size) in stock during the graduation months of May/June." And new lines for Summer 2014? "We're excited about our new children's range, ethically sourced (as are all our clothing lines), and featuring characters from Alice in Wonderland. The Lewis Carroll connection is particularly strong for Oxford - we have a raffle on Alice's Day (5th July), with special offers, and staff dressing up accordingly..." At this point, Chloe breaks off to make it crystal clear that she will not be dressing as Alice herself this year, although some staff members might... Your own favourite lines ? "I love the leather satchels - they are beautifully made, as is the pottery, which looks wonderful - the Aston line for everyday use, and the Hazeldean range for special occasions." Items unique to UOS? "Most of the items we sell are exclusive to us. For example, you cannot find the Cityscape design anywhere else - one of our most popular ranges, with the iconic Oxford skyline appearing on mugs, tea towels, umbrellas...etc. Oh, and our glassware , which depicts well-known Oxford landmarks, is bespoke and locally-sourced." There is some beautiful stock here, but how affordable is it? "We stock everything from postcards to original artwork, so there is something for everyone. Holders of a Bodleian Library Card qualify for a 10% discount on most items, and we regularly run 3 for 2 offers during the summer, on a wide range of products.” How can I be sure it's genuine? "Look for the round UOS emblem. Other shops sell licensed products using the shield image, but we are the only shop authorized to use the University's belted crest emblem on ALL products, which makes much of what we sell exclusive. So, if you want an authentic (usually British) souvenir of a very British University, UOS is the only place to visit. 106 High St, Oxford OX1 4BW Tel: 01865 247414 Web: www.oushop.com www.inoxford.com

Event Article:

Flowers @ Oxford

August 22 – 24, 2014, at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University During three fun and inspiring days, stars of the floristry and flower arranging worlds will converge upon Lady Margaret Hall (LMH), Oxford, for a celebration of all things floral. Co-produced by Judith Blacklock who has a flower school in London and Europe’s leading floral publication, Fleur Créatif, Flowers@Oxford follows the resounding success of Flowers@Chicheley in 2011 – and is set to be even more outstanding. Every tower, quad and corner of the college and its grounds – on the banks of the River Cherwell - will be decorated with stunning blooms, showcasing the very best of international floral design. In the Byzantine-style chapel, there will be an awe-inspiring array of over 1,000 roses; while Jonathan Moseley – of BBC2’s The Big Allotment Challenge and florist in residence at Chatsworth – will be giving Eleanor Lodge a floral makeover, which is sure to be a talking point. For those curious to see how designers achieve such splendour, they will find answers in the Tesco Theatre of Floral Discovery and the Viking Cruises Demonstration Marquee. Here, acclaimed international florists will share tips and secrets and demonstrate their exciting and fresh ideas, incorporating new techniques and the latest floral accessories. Florists are a competitive bunch, and there will be ample opportunity for them to exercise this with the myriad competitions that will be taking place during the weekend. Flowers@Oxford is excited to be staging the Turner Prize of the flower world, in which entrants are encouraged to set the scene for a dinner party to be attended by a renowned artist, who themselves challenged the way we think about art. Other classes include Catching Dreams and Inspired by Sculpture. In a celebration of the very best of home-grown talent, the Wedding Marquee will feature bridal work by top and up-and-coming British designers using gorgeous UK-grown flowers. British blooms have been the proverbial bridesmaid of the cut-flower industry for too long, and this tent aims to show the wonderful variety and quality of flowers that are available. Furthermore, not only will the marquee be a place to inspire brides-to-be and their families with impressive ideas, but a wonderful opportunity for florists to show off their talent and skills. Anyone who is inspired to have a go themselves will have the opportunity to take part in fun and informative workshops led by the many acclaimed designers who will be attending, including Gregor Lersch, Robert Koene and Per Benjamin (available at extra cost). There will be tempting stalls selling an array of floral-related and unusual items – including art, clothing and hand-made jewellery. There will also be several stunning locations to enjoy delicious food and drink, whether you prefer a light snack in the grounds or a leisurely lunch in the spectacular dining hall.

City Sightseeing

Reviewed by Claire Suteau 12th March 2014

Yesterday, I had the chance to rediscover Oxford thanks to City Sightseeing. I had been in Oxford for a month on a secondment and always wanted to go on top of one of the lovely red buses! So on my last full day in Oxford, I went to Oxford train station to book my ticket and start my long awaited adventure. I already knew a lot about Oxford but the tour gave me views I would never see on foot and so much information about your beautiful city. There are so many fascinating sites in Oxford but knowing more about them was fantastic and what better way to do it in the glorious spring sunshine! After nearly four weeks of constant rain, I was very lucky! I sat on the top deck and chose to hear about Oxford in my own language, French, which was ‘parfait’! I followed the 9 mile tour on the map and did it twice it was so enjoyable. On the first route I stayed on board for the whole journey, listening to the historic facts and amusing comments and anecdotes about the different statues, colleges and wonderful buildings. The fifty minute tour passed very quickly. The tour guide made the whole experience fun, informative and very relaxing. For my second tour, I chose three stops to get off at, recommended to me by Jo in the City Sightseeing shop at the station. There are twenty stops in total. The first was on St Aldates to discover the majestic Christ Church and also to go to Alice’s shop where Alice, from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, used to buy sweets. Next was stop fourteen in the heart of the city to visit The Bodleian Library and New College to see where Harry Potter was filmed. My last stop was The Ashmolean Museum, a great place for lovers of art! The Oxford City Sightseeing tour is the best way to discover and know more about Oxford and it’s great value because you can have a 24 hour or 48 hour ticket to keep jumping on and off! I wish I had hopped on earlier in my stay!

The Good, The Bad &

The Ugly for June 2014 Each month we will provide the good folk of Oxfordshire with some invaluable advice about the world of fruit and veg. To reinforce our stunning pearls of wisdom we have sectioned this regular feature into THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY, plus some great nutritional advice from the lovely Helen! What more could you ask for? ‘Sun?’ We're greengrocers, not miracle workers. Have a nice month.

THE GOOD - Strawberries English juicy strawberries go hand-inhand. Rectory Farm's strawberries with their succulent sweetness and firm texture are the perfect treat for a sunny day or a fresh fruit salad! Available from the end of May, make sure you speak to us about getting your supplies in. Enjoy this most summery of fruits, ideal for a wide range of recipes from meringue to cheesecakes, ice cream and granita. Did you know? There is a museum in Belgium just for strawberries!

THE BAD -

THE UGLY -

Carrots are substandard at the moment – we've had a word. Bananas are causing a few problems (not getting arrested or anything, just not nice).

Cavolo Nero – Black cabbage, called Cavolo Nero in Italy, it's a staple in Tuscan country cooking. Our local black cabbage is wonderful when added to soups and stews…but its season is ending, so maybe not so wonderful!

Rectory Farm – All soft fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries will be great in June. Good for eating and cooking!

Start to think about locally grown lettuces from our supplier, Gibbons. Cos is a tasty, succulent lettuce. It's believed to be the oldest cultivated lettuce. Lollo Bionda holds well in summer heat and in the cold for its refreshing taste. Lollo Rosso is tender yet with a crisp texture. And finally our Oakleaf, 100 times more delicious that anything you ever bought (ever ever ever!). All of these will be available in mid June! If you've got time to watch this completely random video then you've got too much time on your hands! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfBVJAB8rEQ

Nutritional Advice with Helen Money

An average strawberry has just 2 kcals, is high in antioxidants which help prevent free radical damage in the body and a bowlful provides over 100% of the amount of vitamin C we need in a day. (Vitamin C is good for the immune system and collagen in the skin)www.helenmoneynutrition.com

Arts Review:

Antiques on High

Antiques on High is a destination for anyone who loves art and antiques. Thirty-five friendly dealers offer a wonderful selection of quality antiques and collectables. The Centre has been established on the ‘High’ in Oxford for more than 17 years; all the dealers work in the shop and so are available to offer advice. You will be delighted to find that the Centre’s small traditional shop front hides a large and interesting selling space filled with cabinets and individual display areas. There are two antiquarian and second-hand bookshops within with lots of general stock covering history, literature, children's books, modern first editions, travel, poetry, cookery, classics and a good selection of foreign language material, plus a specialist music section with scores and sheet music. Visitors are encouraged to browse and take their time to choose from the items on offer. There are thousands of pieces including a great selection of silver and silver plate, fine and costume jewellery, ceramics, glass, pictures, maps and prints, postcards, coins, antiquities, militaria, pistols and weapons, oriental, textiles, toys, treen, retro, books, and other curious and quirky items too. With pieces dating from antiquity to vintage and prices ranging from £1 to £500+, there is something for everybody. Antiques on High also boasts a thriving contemporary gallery, Crafts on High. Here you will find the work of local artists and makers, including members of the Oxfordshire Craft Guild and the Oxford Art Society. There are useful and beautiful objects made of wood, ceramics and glass, original works of art for your wall space and a range of delightful greetings cards. Fabrics abound, including textiles as art, for the home and to wear. The unique jewellery ranges include traditional silver, enamel and beads. Many of the items have an Oxford theme, so make perfect gifts and souvenirs. The gallery is a venue during the prestigious annual Oxford Artweeks festival and the makers are happy to work on commissions. Antiques on High is a pleasant stroll from the Botanic Gardens and river and just 5 minutes from Oxford’s Covered Market; it sits between restaurants and coffee bars (including the first coffee shops ever opened, dating from the 1600s) so you can relax with a drink, meal or snack after your visit. With London, Park and Ride and local buses stopping right outside it is easy to reach on public transport too. 85 High Street. Accommodation Review:

Royal Oxford Hotel

Reviewed by Matt Wright Friday 9th May

You can often learn a lot about a hotel by simply sitting back and observing. As I was waiting to check in, Radek the Assistant Manager, was busy helping a couple of travellers who were not guests, but urgently needed to use the wi-fi to check in to their flight online. No problem. When it was my turn, my partner needed a ticket for the parking (located conveniently nearby - usually a real bugbear in Oxford), and Radek came along personally to sort it out. Again, no problem. Ania, from the front desk, then showed us up to our room, pointed out the wi-fi code which was clearly printed on the back of our room slip (another frequent bugbear of mine), and explained it also acted as our breakfast and dinner voucher. Simple eh? Other little touches impressed. Spare duvets, full-sized kettle, and an impressive range of complimentary teas & coffees, together with the appropriate semi-skimmed, skimmed, and creams - perfect for purists like me who don't mix their milks! Could we store our bikes somewhere? Reserve a table for the in-house Korean restaurant? A printed map of Oxford with local recommendations? ‌OK, so I know Oxford quite well, but I always think it's a good 'hotel' test to see if their front of house staff really know the area. You've guessed - no problems all round. After a very restful night's sleep, we got up early to cycle out and do a parkrun in North Oxford, and the Saturday papers were already outside our door. Upon our return - some time later, we're not quick runners ! - breakfast was served in the restaurant until an agreeably relaxed 11am. I must mention the unique combination of a Korean sizzling hotplate to serve a full English - it keeps everything beautifully hot, together with separate little compartments for fried mushrooms, diced potatoes and baked beans... genius! All in all, a great place for anybody exploring. Convenient parking, close enough to walk across from the station - no messing about with taxis - and a pleasant wander into town, with a multitude of bars and restaurants right on the doorstep. Oh, and the big difference - hotel staff who really can't do enough for you. Park End Street, Oxford, OX1 1HR, UK Tel: 01865 248432 Web: www.royaloxfordhotel.co.uk www.inoxford.com

Westwood Hotel

Reviewed by Gillie Coghlan Wednesday 7th May

The Westwood Hotel just outside Oxford is set in a beautiful wooded

road with surroundings composed of glorious countryside. It is a

striking building and has been sympathetically modernised with a

large parking area and wonderful views from the rooms.

My room, number 3, was large with huge windows and an extensive balcony overlooking a stunning garden and bluebell woods, with outdoor furniture which would be wonderful on sunny summer evenings. The reception staff were welcoming and composed of good looking young men; always a bonus! They offered help with my luggage and giving directions. The public areas of the hotel are spacious and well laid out, with areas for sitting with a drink or a coffee away from the bar, many with garden views, and a large airy dining room. Our room was very large with a seating area by the television, large balcony as mentioned before, and a very stylish shower room which looks brand new. The decor is chic and modern and the bed comfortable, with lovely heavy curtains; it was very peaceful at night and I slept like a log! Dinner was delicious with plenty of choice and the service was attentive and charming. I greatly enjoyed my tiger prawns with garlic followed by a yummy duck breast with amazing blackberry sauce - no room for pud! Breakfast was also tasty, with a good selection of hot and cold foods, served in the lovely light dining room overlooking the gardens. There is plenty of parking space off the road and large grounds for walking and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. The hotel is also close to the Ring Road for easy travelling. The morning staff were young and charming girls who were pleasant and happy to help with any request. Hinksey Hill, Oxford OX1 5BG Tel: 01865 735408 Web: www.westwoodhotel.co.uk www.inoxford.com

Restaurant Review:

Aziz Express

Reviewed by Lucy Parr

Thursday 8th May

“Oh no, my favourite dish isn’t on today – oh well time to try a different one!” laughs one happy customer who is busy helping herself to the huge array of buffet dishes laid out before her. Located in the Ozone Leisure and Entertainment Park, Aziz Express is the bouncy sibling to big brother Aziz, the original restaurant on Cowley Road and an ideal place to pop-in for an Asian buffet dining experience that’s ready when you are. Modern and colourful décor adds a cheery feel to the restaurant, which was already buzzing when we arrived as customers took advantage of the ‘buy one, get one half price’ Wednesday offer. Greeted by a happy and smiling waitress in her beautiful bright coloured sari, we were shown to our table and asked for our drink orders. The restaurant has a fully stocked bar with a great selection on offer, prices are reasonable with a glass of wine from £4.15 and draught lager from £3.50. For only £12.95 per person (£13.50 on Friday & Saturday) guests can help themselves to the huge variety of dishes on offer and it’s difficult not to get carried away. Careful not to let my large, hungry eyes rule my stomach, I chose a modest selection of starter options of vegetable bhagi, spicy tandoori chicken wings, papadums with some sauces and onion salad. There’s also pasta salad, beans, spring rolls, chicken tikka, chips and more to choose from. It would be easy (but a shame) to fill up on appetizers with so many delicious main courses to try. Covering Indian, Bangladeshi and Thai cuisine with a choice of vegetarian and meat selections there is literally something for everyone. As a bit of a spice girl my standout favourite was the hot Chicken Jalfrezi and a spicy spinach and lentil dal. If you want to avoid heat however there are lots of milder dishes available including noodle and pasta options, with plenty of hot, fresh naan and a selection of rice dishes too. You can refill your plate as often as you wish, but I only returned for some more Bombay potatoes that were buttery, delicately spiced and hard to resist! If you still have room for dessert (my dining partner and I had to share!) you won’t be disappointed with the selection that includes traditional kheer (rice pudding) and gulab jamon (Indian doughnuts). Whether you’re up for a game of bowling, a visit to the cinema or to watch some live sport at the Kassam Stadium, Aziz is a great place to refuel after any activity. As my fellow customer so happily commented, it’s not the same dishes every week, which adds great variety for regular visitors, after all a trip to Aziz Express may be the only destination you seek. Oxybox

0/10 for customer service My family and I have long been supporters of Oxybox which offers a fresh take on your average Chinese takeaway. But recently I had cause for concern when I witnessed customers waiting at the Kidlington branch walk out due to the lengthy time orders were being turned around, but I too experienced what can only be described as appalling customer services. Prior to my experience, we had ordered a takeaway for 10 including a whole Aromatic duck for £28. You’d imagine that would be a whole lot of duck. You’d be wrong, it barely filled half a silver tin. I called Oxybox and questioned whether we had indeed been given a whole duck. To my surprise, the response came “yes I’m even surprised at how little duck you get”! So back to the current situation. Missing dishes is a common problem in most Chinese takeaways I would imagine. So when I got home to find a dish was missing, I called Oxybox. To be fair it was delivered 15 minutes later. In the meantime, we had started our half duck for six this time. I can only describe the duck as burned twiglets. I called to complain. Having had no reason to call other than to order in over a year, I was now finding calling Oxybox to complain a regular occurrence. I was told that was the dish, but it wasn’t. It wasn’t shredded, it was hard and inedible. I was told the manager would call me in 15 minutes to discuss as I wanted a refund and to raise my concerns about general slipping standards at Oxybox. And that call never came. Nor did a reply to my countless e-mails asking for a response. So for anyone looking for a takeaway, don’t bother with Oxybox. They obviously don’t care a damn about customers. The good news? We’ve not had a takeaway since and so not only are we saving money, but the pounds aren’t being piled on quite as they would have been! The Editor, Living In Oxford Magazine 74
