Welcome to Living In Oxford
At last the sun is out and we can look forward to a wonderful summer – no I never learn do I?!
We’ve got a bumper issue for you with our old friends from Oxford Shakespeare Company adorning our front cover for what must be the 7th year on the trot – if previous productions are anything to go by then Twelfth Night is a must see for all! It’s then the Isabelle Saers show with a number of reviews from our busy little Swede who has now left for home, but thank you for reviewing Oxford Isabelle! Amongst Isabelle’s reviews are a trip around Oxford with City Sightseeing, a day out at Blenheim Palace, tea at the Old Parsonage and Sunday lunch at The Magdalen Arms. We also have a preview of the fabulous Grand Prix Ball at Blenheim Palace, reviews of Waterperry Gardens, Lady Margaret Hall, The River Hotel, The Crown in Woodstock, The Oxford Hotel Spa, Didcot Railway and Angels Cocktail Bar. What did I tell you? Loads to get your teeth in to. Have a great month.

Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night Oxford Shakespeare Company
Welcome to the Oxford Shakespeare Company, acclaimed specialists in open-air and site specific theatre and a must-see favourite during
the Oxford summer. In the Summer of 2015 the Gardens of Wadham
College are taken over for‌ Twelfth Night!
Bad teeth, mad hair, outrageous costumes! And that's just Orsino, who is still trying his damnedest to get with Olivia who refuses to leave her caravan. Feste won't settle down and is forever leaving the mother of his children in the lurch, so when Viola and Sebastian pitch up on the shores of the island of Illyria they have learn to adapt fast if they are going to find each other again. A folk band accompanies the exploits of separated shipwrecked twins as they seek to find each other amongst the madcap and colourful characters that inhabit the world of Illyria. Directed by Nicholas Green. Original music by Nicholas Lloyd Webber. This year we were also delighted to be performing at Art in Action at Waterperry Gardens and the Wilderness Festival at Cornbury Park. The OSC are celebrated for their open air, site specific performances both at their summer residency at Wadham College Oxford and across the Historic Royal Palaces sites of Hampton Court, Kensington Palace, Tower of London and the Banqueting House Whitehall. Our shows are designed to be interactive with the environment in which they are performed, allowing the audience to enter fully into the world of the play. They are renowned for their talented actors, sensational costumes and for the quality of the live music which is individually devised for each production.

Andrew Hood
Making several trips abroad each year, Andrew’s paintings are born from detailed, lively location sketches. Andrew builds a sense of movement and atmosphere in his work through expressive mark making and mixed media. It is his aim for the viewer to see beyond a picturesque location as he captures an elemental energy of time and place.
To do this he will often seek out a high-up view point in order to see the liveliness of a particular place, observing the hum of the people, traffic and changing light. Back in the studio, working from his gathered drawings, Andrew will surround himself with paint, and by quickly pouring, scraping marks on the canvas, he builds a painting that is like his sketches, vibrant and alive with movement.
Andrew Hood has worked with Sarah Wiseman Gallery for many years, establishing a firm relationship and collector base. He will show a series of recent paintings throughout June.

A day at Blenheim Palace
Reviewed by Isabelle Saers Thursday 7th May
Regardless if you are a tourist, visiting Oxford for a couple of days and wants to see the best that the area has to offer, or a local who wants to spend a day on a beautiful and historical landmark, Blenheim Palace is the place for you. My family and I were amazed already outside the gates. Blenheim, with it baroque architecture, took our breaths away as we entered the grounds. The palace was built in the 18th century and is truly a sight to see. The house is majestic and surrounded by stunning parkland, situated in Woodstock. To honour Sir Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister who was born and grew up on Blenheim Palace, the permanent exhibition about his life has been revived with new photographs, diary extracts and other features. The exhibition, called Churchill 2015 will be open throughout the year and the palace also hosts events that are dedicated to Churchill. This is the year of the 50th anniversary of the death of Churchill, the 75th anniversary of him becoming Prime Minister and also for his “Finest Hour at the Battle of Britain. Even though I am not especially well-read on neither British history nor politics, Churchill 2015 was surprisingly fascinating and there is something for everyone to find interest in. I especially found the stories about how Churchill met his wife Clementine, and about the years before he became the great Prime Minister, capturing. Not only did we read up on details about Winston Churchill, we also explored some of the many rooms of the palace. Decorated with fine art and astonishing furniture, we all felt like we were thrown back a century or two. Enormous dining halls, marvellous lounges and exceptional hallways are just examples of what we witnessed within the walls of the palace. Eventually, we ended up in the grandiose garden. Statues, flowers and fountains, combined with the breath-taking view, were composed like a masterpiece. It was the perfect end of our visit to Blenheim Palace and the hours were well-spent. Except for guided tours, beautiful gardens and themed exhibitions, Blenheim Palace also offer rides with miniature trains, playing in the adventure playground and other activities for the younger visitors. They also host several events throughout the year, such as sporting and cultural events. Woodstock, Oxfordshire OX20 1PP Tel: 0800 849 6500 Web: www.blenheimpalace.com www.inoxford.com

The Didcot Railway Centre
Reviewed by Elouise Powell 28th March
In the heart of Didcot, famous for its train station and industrialised power station lies a celebration of the golden age in train travel the Didcot Railway Centre. 20 acres of awe inspiring mechanics gleaming with over five generations of history. Entering through the modern Didcot Parkway station I use a vintage rotary telephone alerting my arrival, instantly igniting my love for forgotten classics. I proceed to be warmly welcomed by Anne, a volunteer for the centre who is passionate and knowledgeable about the trains which she calls her ‘babies’. The centre is an incredible contrast of man-made constructions including locomotives, carriages, wagons and woodland surrounding a picnic area where visitors snack on packed lunches watching trains surge past. Left to wander blissfully anywhere and everywhere, visitors get to access all areas to make their visit truly unforgettable. Notable sights along the journey include the only working coal stage in the UK; where coal is stored before being gravity fed into waiting empty tenders, the original 1932 built engine shed housing locomotives, some of which date back to the 19th century, and the ‘Locomotive Workshops’ where you can climb into the caboose and imagine being a conductor for the afternoon. Starting your personal tour experience at the turntable, you can leisurely stroll and visit the main demonstration line. On steam days you can board the working train and travel along one of the centre's running lines, and make your way to the GWR museum and archive to view antique models, toy trains, old uniforms, signals, posters and pictures. Continue on to the carriage shed housing over 40 carriages and admire the ornate paintings on older carriages. End your journey around this magnificent centre at the refreshment room serving delicious food before heading to the bookstall and gift shop for delightful mementos of your trip to the centre. Personally, I came to the Railway Centre to further my curiosity about how far trains have progressed throughout history. The contrast as you leave the modern trains behind and dive head first into steam built engines is engaging and fascinating. The centre is entertaining for children, teenagers and adults with plenty to do for all. I will be returning to the centre to enjoy their many events such as the Gala’s, Heritage Diesel Days, Teddy Bears’ Picnic and the Steam Days. The calendar for 2015 is bursting with fantastic days out at the Didcot Railway Centre, so head to Didcot and start your own experience.

City Sightseeing
Reviewed by Isabelle Saers Friday 8th May
A very popular way amongst tourists to experience Oxford, the beautiful University City, is to take a ride in the City Sightseeing bus. It is definitely one of the most efficient ways to see as much as possible, with its hour-long route and 20 stops at the landmarks and historical sites. Even though I have lived in Oxford for nine months now, going on the guided bus tour with City Sightseeing was surprisingly informative. Regardless if you are a tourist, visiting Oxford for a couple of days, or if you, like me, have spent months or even years in this lovely city, the bus tour will teach you more interesting things about it. The double-decker bus allows you to sit either downstairs or upstairs, and if you choose to sit on the upper deck, you can either do it under or without a roof. With the English weather in mind, this is very advantageous since it might be sunny one minute and the next one it is pouring down. Seated on the upper deck of the characteristic red bus, my friend and I enjoyed the sun while the recorded commentary, which was available in ten languages, told us anecdotes about the places we passed. On some departures, there is also a live guide who compliments the audio guide, but we only had access to the audio. That guide was rather brief, but it was enough since we got the most important details and facts. Some of the most popular stops of the tour were Christ Church, Sheldonian Theatre, Queen’s College, Trinity College and Castle Unlocked. A big advantage by going with the City Sightseeing buses is that you can jump off at any stop, explore the sight and later jump on the next bus to continue the tour. The ticket is either valid for 24 or 48 hours, which is convenient if you visit Oxford for a weekend and want to have time to experience it. You are also provided with a leaflet with a map of the route, timetables for some of the bus stops and offers regarding some of the sights along the route. When the circuit was complete and my friend and I had seen all the stops, from Oxford Railway Station to Randolph Hotel, we were both amazed with how much we actually had missed during our time here and how many new things we had learnt about our beloved city. Shifting Sands
Until 12th July: Hybrid Rituals & Symbols in Contemporary Culture. An exhibition of works by Serena Korda and Dr. Lakra. Folkloric rituals, from harvest festivals in Sussex to Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico, continue to be shaped by the rites and activities which traditionally bound communities together. The symbols, images and materials produced as part of these rituals are often appropriated, developed and repurposed over time to gain new relevance beyond their pagan ritual origins. They are the visual representations of myth and familiarity, fear and hope, and of community identity in a specific place and time.

Hotel Review:
A Room with a Riverside View Does Oxford finish at the Railway Station? Go west a short distance, where The River Hotel overlooks the River Thames and Osney Island conservation area beside Osney Bridge - just a stroll away. Along the Thames tow path you can catch glimpses of the City towards Binsey and Wolvercote or Osney Lock, Folly Bridge punts, College boats and beyond. The building is owned by an Oxford University college, built in the 1870s and lived in by the Master-builder Mayor of Oxford, Thomas Kingerlee - the company and family still trade in Oxford. Formerly known as The Bridge House Hotel in the 1930s when it boasted 'having refrigeration' - B&B was just ÂŁ1.75p in old money! Later, Ehrsam Hotel, the family was quoted by John Betjeman. The Hotel has moved on since then, run traditionally, to quote a recent New York guest 'Quintessentially Oxford'. All bedrooms offer their own bath, shower and toilet, the usual in-room expectations of Freeview TV, clock / radio, hair-dryer, kettle for tea and coffee. There is also free wi-fi and ample car parking on site for residents. 'What time is breakfast?' is a frequent enquiry - this title will be used by owner Pat Jones for her book, as and when she gets down to writing it! In the meantime, the Hotel rate includes table service breakfast, overlooking the Thames, cooked to order with a generous buffet to start. The Hotel welcomes guests from far and wide visitors to Oxford businesses, colleges, academics, family visits, grand-parents etc.... Mid-week and weekenders, Thames walkers and tourists of course! The Hotel slogan is 'Large enough to be comfortable, small enough to be friendly' which matches the hotel's image, offering good value with friendly service. Since 2007 Visit England awarded the **Metro Grading-Hotel with facilities in a good location for dining out. The Thames Path is right on the doorstep - Location, Location, Location!

Champagne tea at The Old Parsonage
Reviewed by Isabelle Saers Friday 8th May
Having my family over for the weekend, a visit to Old Parsonage was without doubt a perfect way to introduce them to my favourite English tradition; afternoon tea. The champagne tea we were served was unlike anything we had ever had before. The Old Parsonage dates back to the 17th century and is located on St Giles street, a couple of minutes away from the heart of Oxford. The interior is exquisite; luxurious with a personal touch. The open fireplace next to the bar creates an intimate and relaxed atmosphere, welcoming the visitors who come here for afternoon tea, meals or just for a drink. The second we stepped inside the charming house, we were greatened by the friendly staff. Our waitress showed us our table in a quiet room with only a few tables. We instantly felt at home and felt that we were up for a treat. The four of us chose different teas; Classic Earl Grey, Old Parsonage Afternoon tea, Wild Rooibos and White Peony, which all were perfect for our preferences. Before the tea and the delicacies we were all given a glass of Andre Clouet Champagne. Definitely a good start of the culinary experience. Together with the tea, the tiered cakes stand with mouth-watering bite sizes, all homemade, arrived to our table. We dug in on the perfect sized sandwiches with delicious fillings such as ham, smoked salmon, egg mayonnaise, cucumber and chicken. They were all very light, yet delicious. Moving on to my personal favourite, scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam. They were light and not too big, and combined with the cream and jam, it was a match made in heaven. Last, but not least, it was time for the sweeter petit fours. Raspberry macaroon, rich chocolate cake, ginger cake and to my dad’s delight; lemon curd tart. These treats were the grand finale of our tea, and I reckon we will dream about these sweets for months to come. The champagne tea was simply out of this world. The friendly and skilled waitresses treated us like royalties and we left The Old Parsonage filled with joy and homemade delicacies. If you ever have the chance to indulge at The Old Parsonage, do so. You won’t regret it.

Sunday Roast at The Magdalen Arms
Reviewed by Isabelle Saers Tuesday 7th May
Believe it or not, but even if I have lived in Oxford since September, I still had not had a proper Sunday Roast in the beginning of May. A friend found out about this and instantly recommended The Magdalen Arms on Iffley Road. Apparently you can’t tell people you’ve lived in England without having the traditional Sunday meal, so I brought a friend with me and together we savoured a fantastic meal. The atmosphere inside Magdalen Arms was friendly and not too noisy, even though every seat was taken, which was the first sign that we had chosen the right place for my first Sunday Roast. After starting off with a pint of my favourite cider, Symonds Cider, and a pint of lager for my friend, we decided to order the Tuscan Roast Pork. When we saw the plates being carried towards our table, we knew we had chosen the right thing off the menu. The roast pork was stuffed with anchovies and almonds and was served with roast potatoes and green bean vinaigrette. It was love at the first bite. The pork with its filling was delicious and married well with the bean vinaigrette. The roasted potatoes were the perfect side for the pork and we relished every bite. We agreed that this was the best meal we had had in a long time and we didn’t hesitate when the friendly waitress offered us to take a look at the dessert menu. Being two extreme chocolate lovers, the choice of desserts was quite obvious. We decided to share the Chocolate Nemesis and Chocolate Sundae, and we did not regret it for one second. The Chocolate Nemesis was a rich chocolate cake, served with crème fraiche. The piece didn’t look too much to the world at first sight, but just a small piece of it created an explosion of flavour in your mouth. The crème fraiche really freshened up the dessert and it was a good combination. It was certainly something for chocolate enthusiasts like us. The Chocolate Sundae had surprisingly many components; vanilla ice cream, pieces of chocolate brownie, salted caramel sauce, whipped cream… All these delicious things together made up an amazing taste experience. When we left The Magdalen Arms, my companion and I agreed that we would thank my friend who introduced us to this lovely gastro pub. It was a meal we will remember for a long time to come.

Restaurant Review:
The Crown, Woodstock
Reviewed by Donald Sloan Tuesday 7th May
Sometimes, when the intense congestion of Oxford city centre is proving too much to handle, I entertain thoughts of moving somewhere more peaceful. Maybe Woodstock? Well OK – such thoughts don’t last very long. Despite the undoubted charm and beauty of this Cotswolds market town, there are only so many strolls in the grounds of Blenheim Palace and visits to antique shops I could take before I’d miss something more lively. It remains a destination to visit, albeit more frequently than before given the quality of its various restaurants and bars. I’ve enjoyed lazy summers’ evenings on the terrace of the Feathers Hotel; outstanding lunches in the Kings Arms; and authentic regional Italian cuisine from Lucio and his team in La Galleria. There is now another reason for a return trip to Woodstock – the stunningly refurbished Crown – the latest offering from Julian and Justine Rosser, known for their successful track record with restaurants and bars in Oxford. They have given this grade 2 listed coaching inn a new lease of life. It has various rooms including an immaculate bistro leading to an attractive courtyard; a more rustic dining room, complete with oak beams and polished wooden floor; and a cosy bar, with two open fires to enjoy in winter months. The number of dishes on offer is reassuringly limited and the wine list (that will look very familiar to those who have dined at The Anchor in Jericho) offers sufficient choice. To start we shared three small plates – chorizo, cannellini beans and purple sprouting broccoli; beef carpaccio, capers, rocket and parmesan; and octopus, tomato, capers and dill. Whilst the first two were seriously enjoyable, it was the octopus that stole the show. It was incredibly tender, full of flavour, and the sharpness of its accompanying ingredients was a joy. To follow, my companion chose Provencal fish stew, gurnard and mussels. The quality and freshness of the components was clear, and together they were comforting and moreish. I went for rump of lamb, roast potatoes, spinach and anchovies. Whilst the meat was cooked perfectly, I would have welcomed potatoes with more of a crunch. We finished with a ‘special’ dessert – a delicious lemon polenta cake that was light and moist. To drink – a smooth Chardonnay from Venezie, the northern Italian region better known for the production of Pinot Grigio. It seems Julian and Justine have applied their winning formula once again. Elegant interior design that is respectful of architectural heritage; dishes that fulfil (high) expectations; and service that is friendly and informal. I’ll be back at The Crown in the very near future! 31 High St, Woodstock, Oxfordshire OX20 1TE Tel: 01993 813339 Web: www.thecrownwoodstock.com www.inoxford.com

Bar Review:
Angels Cocktail Bar
Reviewed by John Hobart Friday 24th April
Oxford offers a choice of venues where you can sip a cocktail - from hotels to restaurants and clubs to bars. The challenge is to be something special, and Angels succeeds with a menu of vintage classics and modern creations served with the glamour of the silver screen. Located on trendy Little Clarendon Street, a short walk from the city centre, Angels immediately feels a bit different. As you step in you are greeted by a member of staff on the door and Bette Davies, Katharine Hepburn and Greta Garbo on the walls, while the polished red bar and gilt-framed mirrors give a sense of timeless glamour. When a space is comfortable with itself, it is easy to relax within it. This was evident from the range of people there at 6pm on a Saturday with younger and older couples on dates or having pre-dinner drinks and groups of friends of all ages meeting and laughing. The bar had a great feel to it, friendly and relaxed with everyone there to enjoy the moment. The cocktail menu is not overly-long, but is guaranteed to have something different and the staff are great at giving advice! There are the classics that you’ll recognize (Cosmopolitan, Mojito, Daiquiris and Sours), but alongside them are Vintage cocktails and Angels Lab. The Vintage section offers cocktails rediscovered from old books or films, like the Yokohama Romance from the Romance nightclub in Japan where brandy, cherry brandy, lime and passion fruit are combined in a martini glass to create a rich fruity concoction, or the more delicate than expected Corpse Reviver of gin, Cointreau, vermouth, lemon and absinthe. The Angels Lab showcases the mixing skills of the bar team who love creating new drinks for customers and adding them to their repertoire and, for the most popular, to the menu. New favourites include the Pear and Cardamom sidecar – muddled cardamom seeds shaken with Xante pear brandy, Cointreau and lemon giving a subtly spiced cocktail with an exotic undertone – and the now famous Tiramisu, which tastes like the dessert in a glass with layers of espresso, Kahlua and Mozart white & dark chocolate liqueurs. In addition to serving drinks Angels offers afternoon classes in how to make them, and a venue you can hire for private parties. For Angels it is all about the customer enjoying themselves, and that means they are flexible, creative, friendly, and well worth visiting! Spa Review:
The Oxford Hotel Spa
Reviewed by Gillie Coghlan Thursday 7th May
I visited the Spa at The Oxford Hotel and had their hour-long aromatherapy massage with Spa Manager, Rosie. I was welcomed on arrival by Rosie and a young man at the Spa Reception, which is on the first floor of the hotel, through the bar; I was asked to complete a health form. Both were very chatty and friendly and the Reception area is furnished with comfortable sofas for relaxing before your treatments; the pool and gym are alongside Reception, with sauna off the treatment room. Rosie took me to the treatment room, which is comfortably warm, softly lit and inviting, with a large, heated massage table. She left me to undress and lie on the table, with pleasant and relaxing 'massage music' playing. On her return, Rosie asked how I like my massages and I requested fairly firm. The hour-long massage, starting on my front, arms and legs and followed by a glorious back massage, was extremely enjoyable and de-stressing; I could have stayed all day! Afterwards Rosie left me to slowly get dressed and brought me water, advising me to drink more throughout the day. Rosie was trained at the Oxford International College of Beauty and has many years of experience. I would recommend the Oxford Hotel Spa for a treat or 'just because you're worth it'! The full menu includes scalp treatments with essential oils; deep massage for tired feet; detoxifying wraps; various moisturising facials; and specialist treatments for men too... Or you can opt for a whole Luxury Pamper Day with a variety of treatments. Spa Packages:
