Welcome to Living in Oxford Welcome to the August edition of Living in Oxford. August’s edition is full to the brim of things to do outside, inside and some great restaurants, starting with 2015’s best of the lot, The White Hart at Fyfield. I’d always been told this was a sure bet to win the Awards and last year’s crowning as Oxfordshire’s Restaurant of the Year sealed what many of you had long been thinking. Well done to Kay, Mark and the team and good luck for this year’s Awards….why not cast your vote for the public vote at www. oxfordshirerestaurantawards.co.uk Going with the food theme, why not visit the Foodies Festival in South Parks, always a great event, or visit another favourite of ours, Acanthus at the Macdonald Randolph Hotel. As far as outdoor pursuits are concerned, we feature Kirtlington Golf Club, there’s a feature on Creation Theatre and their production of Hamlet and we have an interesting feature on what could be one of Oxford’s greatest attraction….The James Sadler Oxford Balloon Experience. Nele has also been aboard our favourite red bus with City Sightseeing and we also feature one of our longest standing Living in Oxford customers, Sanders of Oxford, one of the finest galleries in the county. Fingers crossed for an even hotter August! Richard Rosser Editor, Living In Oxford Magazine

"The White Hart – named one of the 50 greatest pubs in England by The Telegraph, awarded 2 AA Rosettes for Culinary Experience, and winner of the coveted "Restaurant of the Year" award at the 2015 Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards - is a favourite with locals and foodies from far and wide. "

"The jewel in the crown of the Oxford arts"

28

“Creation Theatre is Oxfordshire’s largest producing theatre company and over the last 20 years, they have performed to over half a million audience members. Every summer they pop up in one of Oxford’s beautiful green spaces, delighting visitors with their quirky and creative open-air Shakespeare productions."

Kirtlington Golf Club

48

“It was threatening rain when I arrived at Kirtlington on an overcast May evening to play golf against the general manager of the club, Gary Quainton. As Gary plays off 9 and I struggle to play off 19, a good old thrashing looked even more threatening.”

The White Hart at Fyfield Named one of the 50 greatest pubs in England by The Telegraph, awarded 2 AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence for 8 years running, and winner of the prestigious "Restaurant of the Year" at the Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards 2015, The White Hart is a favourite with locals and foodies from far and wide.

Since arriving in 2005, Mark and Kay Chandler have lovingly restored this historic 15th century Chantry to its former glory. Housing one of the most stunning interiors of any dining establishment, customers can choose to eat under the soaring eaves of the great hall, up high in the minstrel's gallery or on the beautiful patio terrace. A firm believer in using local seasonal produce on his Modern British menu, Mark forages in local woodlands, catches his own crayfish and has developed a large kitchen garden which supplies the restaurants fruit and vegetables. Local farms and suppliers are supported and food miles kept to a minimum. The bustling restaurant and happy faces show that the food is outstanding and the accolades are richly deserved.

“We truly love what we do and every single member of our team shares our passion and dedication to bringing great food and first class service to every customer that walks through the door.” Kay Chandler

Look out for their popular food evenings such as Italian, seafood and tapas, and their Wednesday dinner club which offers amazing value for a mid-week treat.

Attractions Review:

City Sightseeing: Hop on and find out!

Reviewed by Nele Ollech Thursday 14th July

Being new in town the City Sightseeing Tour by bus was the perfect experience for me to discover the city and to find some wonderful sights of Oxford! Even if the tickets are valid for 24 hours or 48 hours it is nice to start the sightseeing tour in the morning to make sure you have lots of time to explore the city. After being introduced to a very friendly bus driver a tour map will be provided when hopping on the bus. The map illustrates the routes of the red and the green double-decker bus – that’s everything you need to plan your individual day in Oxford! Choose the red route for “City & University” and the green route for “Meadows & Bridges”. And after that: Sit down, lay back, plug in the free offered earphones, listen and enjoy! In 10 languages City Sightseeing will let you know about important buildings and places you will pass on your way. On some departures you will also have a live guide who will give you additional information and – in my case – have a nice chat with you. For the younger ones an exciting kids' commentary is given. From Oxford Castle Unlocked to Christ Church, Radcliffe Camera or Ashmolean Museum - you won’t miss any attraction in Oxford. As well as current and historical facts City Sightseeing will also tell you some interesting anecdotes – even where the singer of the band Radiohead lives or where Alice Liddell bought her sweets… The red route takes 1 hour but you can hop off at any stop you like. My first stop, the Carfax Tower, was a perfect choice as it is considered to be the centre of Oxford. At the top of around 100 very narrow steps the view is amazing! You can see all the way down to the architectural High Street and overlook the roofs of beautiful Oxford. Hopped on again as there were so many more stops to see – depending on the weather you can have a walk in the Botanic Gardens and Christ Church Meadow to see the place where the first English Aeronaut successfully took off in a hot air balloon, visit the dinosaurs in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, see the big dining hall at Christ Church where amongst others Harry Potter was eating … or do something totally different you like! A few hours later you will recognise that you won’t be “new in town” anymore… A big “Thank you” to City Sightseeing for the great, enriching experience! - And thanks to the English weather for a perfect sunny day on top of the bus!

Attractions Article:

The Birth of a World Class Visitor Attraction for Oxford The city of Oxford is renowned the world over for its stunning architecture and fascinating history, the university buildings a constant source of interest to residents and visitors alike. What is less known is that Oxford was the site of a historic flight by a local pastry chef James Sadler. At dawn on October 4th 1784, a hot air balloon rose majestically from Christchurch Meadows, and landed in Wood Eaton a distance of approximately seven miles. Thus becoming the first Englishman to fly. A remarkable achievement considering Sadler designed, built and flew the balloon himself, having had no formal education. This outstanding feat was only the beginning of what he went on to achieve. Sadler transformed a passion for flight into a drive to push the boundaries of science and engineering, making significant advances in both. Eventually becoming Chemist to the Admiralty, redesigning naval guns, with such success, that Lord Nelson declared “I would take on board The Victory as many guns as Mr Sadler could send alongside”. The James Sadler Oxford Balloon Experience is a proposal that two Oxfordshire businessmen, Dave Davies and Dave Dunphy are preparing to bring to Oxford City. They are passionate in their desire to educate the world, about the achievements of this working class hero who has sadly been forgotten. His story will fascinate and inspire children of all ages. Their plan is to set up an Interactive Science and information centre where education is the key. Children will attend an exciting hands on information centre, where they will participate in experiments challenging their minds in a format that’s fun and educational, allowing children to express themselves, in a creative environment under the guidance of young scientist, recruited from Oxford’s pool of students. The day will culminate in a tethered balloon flight, enabling them to experience views of the World famous “Dreaming Spires” of Oxford. This amazing educational attraction will be totally free of charge for an invited class of school children every day. Aside from the invited school children, the attraction will be available for anyone to visit and fly in a tethered balloon, locals, visitors and tourists will be able to soar into the Oxford skyline, and imagine how Sadler felt on that October morning in 1784. The James Sadler Experience will not just be a fantastical flight above Oxford but it will ultimate pre-flight briefing including interactives, simulators, augmented/virtual reality and filmic treatments that bring James Sadler to life – in truly “world class” attraction that Oxford has longed for. This would be a perfect family attraction with interests for everyone to enjoy and participate whilst learning about James Sadler and Oxford itself. Theatre Article

"The jewel in the crown of the Oxford arts" Creation Theatre is Oxfordshire’s largest producing theatre company and over the last 20 years, they have performed to over half a million audience members. Every summer they pop up in one of Oxford’s beautiful green spaces, delighting visitors with their quirky and creative open-air Shakespeare productions. Last summer they treated audiences to a 5-star As You Like It, setting this comic masterpiece amongst the stunning formal gardens, riverside woodlands and beautiful lawns of Lady Margaret Hall. In 2014 their Henry V at Oxford Castle was described as an ‘unmissable treat’ by reviewers as the battle of Agincourt was brought to life in this spectacular high-energy three-hander. With 2016 marking Shakespeare's 400th anniversary and 20 years of Creation Theatre, they are back with a season that promises to be the very best of Shakespeare in Oxford this summer. Taking place in the beautiful University Parks in the centre of town, they'll be bringing their trademark eccentricity to this tranquil oasis for their grimy, anarchic take on Shakespeare's Hamlet. Teaming up with vintage Creation director Gari Jones, the cast of six storytellers will rock up in a ramshackle old van and assemble Hamlet's Elsinore Castle before our eyes each night. Lucy Askew, Creation's Chief Executive, comments “Gari’s eccentric, raucous style is right up our street and we know he’ll present the freshest and most exciting version of Hamlet possible”. With performances until 13 August, this is the hottest ticket in town so be quick if you want to catch this unmissable take on Shakespeare's greatest tragedy. Pack a picnic, relax in the beautiful parks and enjoy Shakespeare at its finest from Oxford's very own Creation Theatre. To book, call the Creation Box Office on 01865 766266 or book online at www.creationtheatre.co.uk. Tickets £19 - £24. Performances Monday – Saturday at 7pm, with selected matinees at 2pm. “Creation Theatre Company’s performances always hit the mark” - The Guardian "Creation have the gift of making Shakespeare effortless to understand" - Daily Information “Creation Theatre Company is the jewel in the crown of the Oxford arts” - BBC “If you’re a visitor in Oxford and you only have time for one cultural experience, make it this” - The Oxford Times “All in all, this was a wonderful romp in the woods; just as Shakespeare himself would have liked it. ★★★★★.” - Stage Talk Tel: 01865 766266 Web: www.creationtheatre.co.uk www.livinginoxford.com

Art & Antiques Review:

Sanders of Oxford Reviewed by Elouise Powell Monday 30th May

Oxford’s High Street houses many treasures, but none more than Sanders, a quaint and unusual print shop steeped in history much like the rest of the beautiful city of Oxford. Upon entering the medieval building dating back to the 16th Century, I am blown away with the surprising size of not only the space, but also of the collection of rare prints and stunning maps. I am greeted by passionate and knowledgeable staff, and feel comfortable exploring at my own pace knowing that they are ready to help source prints of particular interest if need be. There are very few general print shops left in the UK, however those of us living in, or visiting Oxford have the privilege to see first-hand one of the largest print sellers in Britain, and the only one of its kind outside of London still trading. Everything about Sanders ignites a passion for history, from the outstanding building with its creaky wooden floorboards to the vast stock of more than 30,000 antique items some dating back to the 16th Century. This gem of a shop carries something for everyone, from caricatures, portraits, and maritime prints to maps, mezzotints and sporting images all in stunning condition, perfect for gifts, art work, educational references and collections. Many presume that fine art print is admired only by the older generation; however Sanders are bringing their creative flair into modern times by adding contemporary pieces which are bold and fun, including prints sourced from Oxford printmakers such as Joseph Winkelman and Ben Pritchard with spectacular aquatints, etchings, and linocuts, all unique in their own way. If vibrant colours are of interest, Sanders has a wide selection of contemporary graphic prints including alphabet illustrations, satires and glass fronted box sculptures displaying three-dimensional imagery, by John Dilnot. As I wander further around the quirky range of items, the increasingly popular selection of 18th, 19th and early 20th Century Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints catch my eye. Not only are they amazingly graphical pieces, but Sanders is one of the only galleries selling these masterpieces outside of the capital. The artwork is delicate and opulent in shades of vibrant reds, calming blues and luscious greens. The prints illustrate beautiful blooming flowers, traditional Asian landscapes and elegant geishas, all definitely worth viewing to admire their fine details. It’s not an easy task to describe such a unique shop; you truly do have to visit to see its appeal. So, head to Sanders this summer and you will find the treasures you have always been searching for.

Sport Review:

Kirtlington Golf Club

Reviewed by Colin Rosser Sunday 3rd July

It was threatening rain when I arrived at Kirtlington on an overcast May evening to play golf against the Golf and Pro Shop Manager of the club, Gary Quainton. As Gary plays off 5 and I struggle to play off 19, a good old thrashing looked even more threatening. Kirtlington Golf Club is celebrating it’s 21st birthday this October and they have plenty to celebrate. In addition to the 6107 yard Par 70, 18 hole course that we played, they have also recently opened a 1535 yard Par 30, 9 hole course. The latter is of course aimed more at the beginner but also caters for those that want a quick nine holes at any time of day. The club have a thriving membership and are a favourite of many golfing societies for their away days. On the evening we played, the clubhouse and dining room was full of members of a local police federation golf day, who seemed to be having a great time. The main course has two par fives, both of which are nearly 500 yards, but even more testing are the 5 par 4’s of around 400 yards. One of the par 3’s is over 200 yards! There is not a lot of water , which I managed to find of course, but there are a good number of bunkers and the rough, as we go through the summer, gets more of a problem. Like most courses, staying on the fairway is the key and I certainly gained from having Gary’s local knowledge to call on. Unbelievably I managed to halve our match on the 18th green and even more unbelievable was the fact that the 18 holes had taken us under 3and 1/2 hours! Mind you I think Gary went easy on me but as he said, I played to my handicap so you must have played to yours! Afterwards we retired to the bar and had a refreshing pint. There is a fantastic atmosphere at the club, they do great food and drink and the staff are amazing. There is a well stocked professionals shop, where coaching is available from a PGA professional, driving range and short game practice area. If you are looking for a progressive golf club with a challenging course you could not find better. They have many very interesting packages available, both personal and corporate, which can be seen on their website. Restaurant Article:

Lunch at Acanthus Written by Richard Rosser

Be honest. How often do you sit down for a proper lunch? By proper I mean at least two courses, sat in the same place for at least an hour, not a quick sandwich on the go or a biscuit with your tea which will somehow see you through to your evening meal. Business lunches, it seems, are a thing of the past but I think I’ve pretty well singlehandedly revived them over the past two months at Acanthus…to great effect for all concerned. When I was asked by Macdonald Randolph Hotel’s General Manager, Michael Grange, to introduce B4’s customers to the refurbished Acanthus Restaurant over the summer, neither Michael nor I could have foreseen the number of Asparagus and Green Bean risotto’s I would help shift, the amount of Halibut I would personally consume or the surprising level of abstinence when it comes to enjoying a glass or two of wine with a meal. Light, airy and with an unsurpassed level of service and food, there’s little to want for. The restaurant has been given a new lease of life with a more relaxed atmosphere, soothing music and an interaction with the outside world which was previously missing. But that’s the nub of the problem for any hotel restaurant isn’t it? How to cater for the residents without putting up barriers to the public? Well, Acanthus has made two smart moves to counter this. Firstly, Acanthus can be accessed via Magdalen Street so you don’t have to make your way through hotel reception declaring ‘I’m only here for the restaurant, sorry!!!’ and secondly, the new Cartoon Champagne Bar has been strategically placed at the back of Acanthus to further attract customers in from Magdalen Street. And it’s working. We’ve seen a mixture of families celebrating graduations to Chinese tourists to….other business lunches. Come to think of it, the business lunch trade is really picking up and that’s because this is a great place for a business lunch. The menu is excellent and structured so that the fabulous new kitchen can get the dishes out quick smart. So what’s the conclusion after twenty five meals and let’s say one hundred courses between my guests and I? Well, to state the obvious, I’ve had to err on the side of caution when it comes to watching what I eat and the menu provides some safe calorie options…plenty of fish! Out of the one hundred dishes I’ve seen served to the table we’ve had two sent back (including one of mine – well I have had 25% of them!) and well in excess of 80% clean plates. Now that’s a rough guide as to how well the food has gone down but I think you’ll agree, those numbers add up. Combine this with the great value for money and you have to say this is a great choice for lunch and also dinner.
