Oxford’s own Creation Theatre has been creating magical evenings all across the city for 19 years. This summer two new adaptations will pop up on the lawns of two Oxford Colleges.

As You Like It
Lady Margaret Hall 28 July – 12 September Leave your seats behind and travel with us through formal gardens and riverside woodland, as we take to the forests of 1940s occupied France. Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece is the ultimate open air theatre experience this summer. There’ll be a witty heroine dressed as a boy, battling brothers, a wrestling match and, on top of that, we’ll throw in a lion attack for good measure. Tickets £22 adults, £20 concessions. Most performances Tuesday-Saturday, see website for schedule. 7:30pm August, 7pm September, selected matinees 2:30pm. “Creation Theatre Company continue to push the boundaries when it comes to staging Shakespeare” Daily Telegraph “If you’re a visitor in Oxford and you only have time for one cultural experience, make it this” The Oxford Times
Alice
St Hugh’s College 18 August – 13 September Take a trip to Wonderland and follow the White Rabiit through the beautiful gardens of St Hugh’s College, pausing by the flowerbeds to meet the Chershire Cat, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, and of course the Red Queen playing croquet on the lawn. With daytime matinees and grown-up evening shows, we’ll be adding magic, music, puppetry and acrobatics to one of Oxford’s most famous stories. A celebration of 150 years of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Tickets £20 adults, £16 children, £18 other concessions. Most performances Tuesday-Sunday, see website for schedule. 7:30pm August, 7pm September, selected matinees 2:30pm and 5pm. “Creation Theatre Company’s Performances always hit the mark” The Guardian “Creation Theatre Company is the jewel in the crown of the Oxford arts” BBC p.s. Both performances are weatherproof - in the case of bad weather they’ll transfer to an indoor back up venue, so the show always goes on!

Attractions Review:
City Sightseeing Reviewed by Isabelle Saers Wednesday 8th July
A very popular way amongst tourists to experience Oxford, the beautiful University City, is to take a ride in the City Sightseeing bus. It is definitely one of the most efficient ways to see as much as possible, with its hour-long route and 20 stops at the landmarks and historical sites. Even though I have lived in Oxford for nine months now, going on the guided bus tour with City Sightseeing was surprisingly informative. Regardless if you are a tourist, visiting Oxford for a couple of days, or if you, like me, have spent months or even years in this lovely city, the bus tour will teach you more interesting things about it. The double-decker bus allows you to sit either downstairs or upstairs, and if you choose to sit on the upper deck, you can either do it under or without a roof. With the English weather in mind, this is very advantageous since it might be sunny one minute and the next one it is pouring down. Seated on the upper deck of the characteristic red bus, my friend and I enjoyed the sun while the recorded commentary, which was available in ten languages, told us anecdotes about the places we passed. On some departures, there is also a live guide who compliments the audio guide, but we only had access to the audio. That guide was rather brief, but it was enough since we got the most important details and facts. Some of the most popular stops of the tour were Christ Church, Sheldonian Theatre, Queen’s College, Trinity College and Castle Unlocked. A big advantage by going with the City Sightseeing buses is that you can jump off at any stop, explore the sight and later jump on the next bus to continue the tour. The ticket is either valid for 24 or 48 hours, which is convenient if you visit Oxford for a weekend and want to have time to experience it. You are also provided with a leaflet with a map of the route, timetables for some of the bus stops and offers regarding some of the sights along the route. When the circuit was complete and my friend and I had seen all the stops, from Oxford Railway Station to Randolph Hotel, we were both amazed with how much we actually had missed during our time here and how many new things we had learnt about our beloved city.

Peter Care Sunday 23rd August: Peter Care still defines his practice as being closer to sculpture than to traditional painting as he uses the material (paint) in a very physical way. Applying thick, wet layers of pigment onto canvas forms the start of his working process; after covering the canvas first – he then begins the painting. Describing his work as “like painting in reverse”, Care proceeds to scrape, smear and remove the pigment from the canvas in various ways and in different directions to ultimately reveal the original construction beneath – albeit now in a transformed state.

Accommodation Review:
The Oxford Hotel Reviewed by Gillie Coghlan Tuesday 30th June
I arrived at The Oxford Hotel after work around 4.45pm and found it very easy to park in the large and spacious car park, which is barrierprotected, with exit tickets available from Reception. The hotel is located on the A40 on Oxford’s northern ring road, so isextremely well-placed for trips into Oxford (bus routes close by so leave the car in the car park!). It is also just a short hop to the A34 leading to Bicester Village (10 miles); and the A44 to Woodstock (5 miles). The beautiful village of Burford is 16 miles west along the A40. The lobby area is open and bright with chairs dotted around. There were four staff manning Reception and I was warmly welcomed and asked how my day was going. I was issued with my key, offered a dinner reservation and help with my luggage; the staff were warm, pleasant and welcoming, and made me feel a valued visitor. I enquired as to Spa and Pool times and was given all the relevant information about timings and opening hours. The Reception area is modern, clean and airy. I had a ‘room with a view’ on the first floor (220) with lovely views over the fields, a huge bed, writing desk, two armchairs, a sofa, wardrobe and modern bathroom, with good-sized toiletries. The decor is modern and functional, and the rooms perfect for business clients. I had a relaxing hot bath after dinner. There is a spa, pool and gym for relaxing after all that work and shopping, which is very welcome. I enjoyed a swim after breakfast, and it was very quiet. Breakfast is self-service and was delicious with plenty of choice, both hot and cold. The restaurant is one floor above the large bar, and the staff there were friendly and helpful. I dined at a corner table overlooking the roundabout. The dinner menu was short but varied and I started with the grilled sardines, followed by the herb-crusted cod on seasonal vegetables (delicious), and finished with the dark chocolate cheesecake. The food was tasty, hot and well-presented. I was delighted to find several types of fizz on offer by the glass... Excellent! In short, if you’re looking for a hugely convenient place to stay for both Oxford and Bicester Village, The Oxford Hotel is the place for you; clean, comfortable and welcoming.

Restaurant Review:
The Rose Reviewed by Lorna Dodson Wednesday 29th June
I visited The Rose on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. The tea room come café is ideally located along Oxford’s bustling High Street and within easy walking distance from the Town Centre, Cowley Road, and even the train station. The Rose features an outstanding variety of loose leaf teas and pastries including, of course, scones (made from scratch). As anyone can tell you, it is very difficult to find the perfect scone - often they are too hard, too crumbly, and sometimes just flavourless. There has to be a real art to making scones and it seems The Rose has got it down. Lightly flakey but sturdy without being tough, with a soft buttery aftertaste, and complimented by their delicious locally sourced jams and clotted cream. The loose leaf teas are all listed with tasting notes for each and their recommended brew times, and will refill your teapot for a second infusion from the delicious fresh leaves. The folks at The Rose really know their teas. The tea room has recently been refurbished and as such now provides a modern yet casual feel, with light music and the gentle chatter of other customers. It is a great place to take a step away from the busy street outside and gather yourself over a hot cup of tea and some nibbles. This could also potentially be a great venue for hosting small get-togethers. Some other delights you can expect to find on their menu are: Various tea specials with 3 pairs of finger sandwiches, a plain or fruit scone with jam and cream, a selection of freshly made cakes, and your choice of either Prosecco, tea, or coffee - definitely not a deal to be missed! They also have a lovely selection of desserts such as rhubarb & ginger crumble, banana crème brûlée, chocolate and almond cake, and more. Plus, The Rose features great seasonal specials from week to week. There is a real lack of dedicated tea houses so it is great to see The Rose have got it right. Open: Mon-Sat 9am-7pm Sun 10am-6pm

Restaurant Review:
The Cherwell Boathouse
Reviewed by Dan Channer Tuesday 14th July
The Cherwell Boathouse wears its title as one of the most famous and well-located restaurants in Oxford with a confident insouciance that many of its clientele strive for decades to attain. It is a destination restaurant which knows how to make hay while the sun is shining. We left the teenage babysitter more in expectation than hope, and, as normal, struggled to park down the narrow alley which connects the Boathouse to Chadlington Road. The hidden location adds to the sense of adventure and on an early July evening we found two packed restaurants (the original building and the temporary-wooden structure, adorned with fairy lights), a crowd of the great and the good already on the Pimms, a calm river and our table for two waiting for us. As the Prosecco and Speckled Hen slipped down (separately - we’re not animals) we shed the day from our shoulders, speculated on which academic papers or hedge funds our neighbouring tables can lay claim to and struggled to order as the choice was so good. I chose well with the goat’s cheese and asparagus topped with pickled walnut and candied beetroot. Minimal portions, maximum pleasure. My wife enjoyed the fish terrine with watercress and celery salad. We both wanted the gazpacho but failed to order it - one to return for. The mains are underpinned by traditional British choices (lamb, halibut, corn-fed chicken, risotto, beef) with flair added in. The steak indicated that the chef finds a ‘medium rare’ request an insult but he/she was vindicated as my wife left a clean plate. I went for the fish and found quite an array of flavours - lemon crayfish potatoes, samphire (a lovely bit of seaweed commonly found in Norfolk) and the aniseed of a fennel venouté. It was fantastic - a little bit of samphire and suddenly you’re on holiday. As the light dimmed, the hubbub rose. We shared pavlova with strawberries, cream and more strawberries as babysitter o’clock approached. Wandering down the lane with the first stars out and the quiet splendour of the Conservation Area around us, all felt good with the world. Open: Sun-Thu 12:00-20:30, Fri-Sat 12:00-21:30

Restaurant Review:
The Feathers
Hotel, Bar and Restaurant
Reviewed by Colin Rosser Tuesday 7th July
One of our favourite places has always been The Feathers Hotel in Woodstock. We have been to eat many times to celebrate Birthdays and Anniversaries but we have never stayed the night there. On arriving on a gloriously sunny day we were welcomed by the General Manager, Dominic Bishop who was in Reception at the time. We were checked in by a very efficient and friendly reception and shown to our Feature Suite, sublime, it even had a dining room table and chairs in it. There is nothing better than going down to the bar for a pre dinner drink knowing that that’s it and you are not leaving until after breakfast! What’s more The Feathers boasts the foremost dedicated gin bar in the country. Testament to this is that they do serve Mahon Gin which is my favourite gin, and not to my knowledge to be found in any other bar in Oxfordshire. And boy! they certainly make a great g and t! which brought back happy memories of Menorca. Sue had her customary glass of champagne while we decided what to eat. Whilst deliberating we were introduced to the Food and Beverage Manager, Francesco. We were drawn to the tasting menu with the accompanying wine flight to afford us the best opportunity to sample as many different dishes and wines. There was also the option of going with the Gin pairings with the tasting menu but as I was working I wanted to ensure I remembered all of the evening! The meal was served by Madalina our waitress and the wines by Luc the Sommelier, all aspect of service was friendly, efficient and done to a very high standard indeed. The tasting menu was exquisite, the Head Chef, Ian Matfin, has obviously spent some time planning it but the execution of every dish was faultless. My favourite was the Sirloin which melted in the mouth and Sue’s was the Classic crème brulee. Our special evening was really amazing, the atmosphere was wonderfully relaxed, cosy and convivial and to know that we just had to go upstairs was the icing on the cake. We laid in and got down for breakfast well before last orders at 10.00am and surprisingly devoured the salmon and scrambled eggs. We had had a very special stay and can’t speak highly enough of the whole experience.

Health & Fitness Review:
ROCK SOLID
BROOKES UNIVERSITY
Reviewed by Richard Rosser Friday 17th July
A lamb to the slaughter, a lemming throwing itself off a cliff. I was these and more. Lorna in the office had mentioned nobody had stepped forward to do the Climbing Wall review. No wonder. It wasn’t a cosy dinner for two, a night’s stay in a posh hotel or tickets to see Shakespeare in the park. But I walked blindly into it. Not really giving this particular review much ‘mental preparation’. After a long day at work I walked, literally, around the corner from our offices in Headington to the Brookes Centre for Sport. I’m not one for heights but had seemingly blocked this out. I wasn’t nervous, no sweaty palms. I honestly didn’t know what I was letting myself in for. I arrived at reception and explained why I was there. “Oh! You’re Richard!” As if I had some sort of target on my head. “Yes, I’m Richard.” I replied, with the vague stirring of a butterfly in my stomach. “Alistair will be with you shortly.” And sure enough, there he was, bang on time. We made our way to the Climbing area of the Brookes Centre for Sport. Yikes! Alistair showed me the ‘free wall’ – no ropes – which faced on to the 6 metre wall (with ropes) and then walked me through into the larger wall, a vast 11 metre structure which belied the height of the building. How on earth did they fit that in there?!?!?! We started on the free wall. I’d say it was about 4 metres high with a cushioned landing in case I came off, which, I’m pleased to say, I didn’t. Nor did I come off on the 6 metre wall which afforded me the safety of the rope attached to Alistair below, or ‘belaying’ as it is known! Each wall has various foot and handholds in different colours. On my first ascent I was able to choose any on the way up but this was followed by having to stick to certain colours which are graded according to their difficulty. It was tough work. I was soon fairly drenched in sweat but was converted. Even when we went through to the 11 metre wall, I wasn’t anxious in the slightest. I didn’t make it to the top – I got just over half way – as my strength was sapping. I’d conquered my fears and slightly annoyed with myself I didn’t do better on the 11 metre wall. I will return and at £7 for a session, it’s no wonder the climbing centre sees up to 100 guests pass through daily. According to Alistair it’s one of the only climbing centres for some distance and following my 40 minute intro, it’s not difficult to see why. One tip – make sure you’ve got climbing shoes on as you’ll need them for grip. Thanks to Alistair and the team.
