Welcome to Living in Oxford Already over half of the year gone! At least the weather is being kind to us….when it feels like it! Inside this month’s edition we have our good friends from University of Oxford Shop who adorn our front cover for what must be the 10th year on the trot – if you’re never been it’s the perfect place to go for an Oxford souvenir for a distant relative or somewhere to take a friend visiting Oxford for the first time! When you’ve finished at the University of Oxford Shop why not pop in to the fascinating Sanders in the High Street just a few doors down! The English Repertory Theatre are performing in University Parks as part of An English Affayre, arguably the outstanding event this July plus loads more to do…indoors and outdoors! On the food front we review the wonderful Fallowfields, Pierre Victoire (always great value) and relative newbie The General Eliott which is causing the best possible stirs. We also take a trip outside of Oxford to visit fabulous Riverside Brasserie in Bray. And, if you’re looking for somewhere to stay between houses or you have guests coming over, why not look up Short Let Space in Woodstock for some truly fantastic properties!Have a great month. For our main course, my guest had the Grilled Swordfish Nicoise – I was ‘forced’ to have a taste and it was fantastically moist and tasty – whilst I chose the Pork Belly with Crackling. My guest had some very chunky chips as a side whilst we shared a delicious buttered spinach.

Lead Article: University of Oxford Shop The University of Oxford Shop is ideally located on the High Street, in the heart of the Dreaming Spires of Oxford. Established in 1990, the shop is the University’s official retail store, specialising in a wide range of clothing and gifts bearing the University of Oxford crest. Situated on the the High Street, opposite Brasenose College and St Mary’s Church, the double fronted façade of the University of Oxford Shop showcases colourful window displays, which entice you inside. The welcoming shop interior is wood panelled similar to that found in many colleges. The helpful staff are always on hand to give product advice or find the right size. The front of the shop features stationary and tableware, college enamel cufflinks and lapel pins, the latter making perfect gifts for those who have a favourite college and wish to show their allegiance or connection to it. The clothing section situated at the rear of the shop has a wide variety of ethically sourced clothing to suit all ages and tastes, including the traditional Oxford college scarves. Official Clothing Range From T shirts and hoodies to polo shirts, rugby shirts and sweatshirts, the official clothing range is regularly updated in terms of styles and designs. This year soft pinks, aqua, pale blues and khaki are key on-trend colours that feature in the range as well as stripes and vintage style graphics. Exclusive Designs Owned by the University, the shop likes to commission items that have a direct link to Oxford. For instance: The multi coloured college stripe pattern inspired by the traditional striped scarves of each Oxford college, is very popular and features on a range of British made leather handbags and satchels by Zatchels. A striped silk scarf and a jolly tasselled wool version are also available. The fritillary collection of jewellery, cushions and handmade silver spoons, features the small delicate flower that blooms in Magdalen College meadow in Spring. Oxford’s famous architectural landmarks provide the theme for the popular Oxford Cityscape collection by UK artist Lizzie Prestt, including candy coloured plates, mugs, canvas bag, tea towel and coasters. In all, the shop is a treasure trove of beautiful and quality products, and unlike all other souvenir shops in Oxford, all profits are returned to and benefit the University. Once visited, if you wish you’d bought more, don’t despair, as the vast majority of items are also available online at www.oushop.com.

The first units opened in May in the recently converted Premier Place building near the Oxford Business Park. Short Let Space aim to provide high quality, value for money serviced apartment accommodation suitable for stays of several nights to many months. Managing Director of Short Let Space identifies the importance of a city the size of Oxford having a supply of professionally operated Serviced Apartment accommodation to service the needs of the business accommodation market. However, Short Let Space concentrates on the provision of professionally managed short let accommodation for both the leisure and business travel market’. With one bedroom apartment rates from £80 to £120 per night, Short Let Space Serviced Apartments are all furnished and equipped to a high standard, within easy reach of the Oxford Business Park, BMW, ring road and East Oxford. Accommodation Review:
Fallowfields Country House Hotel
Reviewed by Matthew Wright Sunday 31st May
“Fallow [Verb] – to leave unsown for a period in order to rejuvenate” There was a wedding taking place as we checked in, the happy party spilling out from the elegant dining room onto the expansive lawns and terrace beyond. Feeling slightly underdressed in our cycling gear we decided not to risk photo-bombing their big day, and instead meandered down country lanes to nearby Bampton which features extensively in Downton Abbey. We returned after lunch, and were shown to our room, beautifully-appointed with views over the gardens and thoroughly befitting of a Lord or Lady Grantham. Now I’m not a purist on such matters being more a ‘bed & tv’ person, but ‘Lady Grantham’ has very exacting standards. The bathroom was inspected and met with fulsome approval - spacious fixtures, wall-to-wall mirrors, and nice touches such as wicker baskets for toiletries – whilst the bed drew gasps of admiration - ‘snuggly duvet’, ‘wonderful sheets – where do I get some?’, and ‘these must be the best pillows ever!’. So, the room passed with flying colours. We took our pre-dinner drinks in the snug bar adjoining the dining room, enjoying canapés on black slate platters. The wine list was innovative – I’d never come across a Pinot Grigio/Riesling blend from Brazil before despite writing on the subject – so we decided to submit to the sommelier’s expertise and ordered the ‘Wine Flight’ alongside the 7-course Tasting Menu. This was quite simply to die for - great for us…maybe not so great for the pigs who live at the farm on the hotel’s 12-acre grounds and make up one of the signature dishes, ‘Three pigs’. However, if you’re concerned about ‘food miles’, this is about as good as it gets - these little piggies didn’t go to market but came straight from the bottom of the garden! The matching wines didn’t disappoint either – the Gruner Veltliner’s acidity beautifully complemented the Wye Valley Asparagus dish, whilst the more luscious Spanish Verdejo cut through the creamy sauce accompanying the bream and langoustines. The following morning, a walk was required to work up an appetite before breakfast. We followed a pre-printed route provided to us by Michelle who was still radiant on reception at 8am despite having been up until 1am, waiting for a bride & groom to arrive – service with a smile indeed! After bidding a fond farewell to the bed, we packed up and left. Rejuvenated.

Art Review:
Sanders of Oxford
Reviewed by Elouise Powell Friday 30th May
Oxford’s High Street houses many treasures, but none more than Sanders, a quaint and unusual print shop steeped in history much like the rest of the beautiful city of Oxford. Upon entering the medieval building dating back to the 16th Century, I am blown away with the surprising size of not only the space, but also of the collection of rare prints and stunning maps. I am greeted by passionate and knowledgeable staff, and feel comfortable exploring at my own pace knowing that they are ready to help source prints of particular interest if need be. There are very few general print shops left in the UK, however those of us living in, or visiting Oxford have the privilege to see first-hand one of the largest print sellers in Britain, and the only one of its kind outside of London still trading. Everything about Sanders ignites a passion for history, from the outstanding building with its creaky wooden floorboards to the vast stock of more than 30,000 antique items some dating back to the 16th Century. This gem of a shop carries something for everyone, from caricatures, portraits, and maritime prints to maps, mezzotints and sporting images all in stunning condition, perfect for gifts, art work, educational references and collections. Many presume that fine art print is admired only by the older generation; however Sanders are bringing their creative flair into modern times by adding contemporary pieces which are bold and fun, including prints sourced from Oxford printmakers such as Joseph Winkelman and Ben Pritchard with spectacular aquatints, etchings, and linocuts, all unique in their own way. If vibrant colours are of interest, Sanders has a wide selection of contemporary graphic prints including alphabet illustrations, satires and glass fronted box sculptures displaying three-dimensional imagery, by John Dilnot. As I wander further around the quirky range of items, the increasingly popular selection of 18th, 19th and early 20th Century Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints catch my eye. Not only are they amazingly graphical pieces, but Sanders is one of the only galleries selling these masterpieces outside of the capital. The artwork is delicate and opulent in shades of vibrant reds, calming blues and luscious greens. The prints illustrate beautiful blooming flowers, traditional Asian landscapes and elegant geishas, all definitely worth viewing to admire their fine details. It’s not an easy task to describe such a unique shop; you truly do have to visit to see its appeal. So, head to Sanders this summer and you will find the treasures you have always been searching for.

Pierre Victoire
Reviewed by Matt Wright Friday 4th June
It was one of those balmy Friday evenings towards the end of term, when parents descend en masse to ‘treat’ their student offspring. There was an eclectic mix of clientele inside, from the aforementioned parent/student parties, to couples enjoying a romantic meal, and old friends partaking of a decent bottle of wine. Pierre Victoire promises ‘simple rustic charm’, which can be surprisingly hard to achieve without falling into clichés of chequered tablecloths and Edith Piaf playing on a background loop. This, on the other hand, felt like sitting in a genuine bistro overlooking Montmarte in Paris – the wooden tables were cosy rather than cramped, the candlelight was atmospheric rather than gloomy, and the French welcome felt heartfelt rather than contrived. Yes, this is definitely a French restaurant from tip to toe – from the French maitre d’ (Pascal from Brittany), to the French waiting staff, and down to the French head chef, with an impressive ‘cheese wall’ and atmospheric paintings to complete the overall effect. As summer was upon us, we both agreed upon a glass of Côtes de Provence Rosé to start with whilst we surveyed the extensive menu, full of ‘signature’ French dishes such as Bouillabaisse, Duck confit, and Ile Flottante – basically, all the dishes which people love but tend to be too fiddly to prepare at home. I opted for the Prix Fixe, great value at £23.50 for 3 courses (even better value at £11.90 during lunchtimes), whilst my partner (she of slightly more expensive tastes) went à la carte mainly because, as she put it, ‘The scallops were calling me’. After my sublime Haddock Fumé starter, it was time for the pièce de la resistance - Moules Marinières, which duly arrived in a silver bucket accompanied by a generous bowl of ‘frites’. Upon seeing these, ‘she of the more expensive tastes’ broke off from her Confit de Canard to reach across and pinch a handful – what is it about chips that makes them so irresistible to the opposite sex? We debated sharing the Moelleaux au Chocolat (for a second), but since all the desserts were homemade and looked irresistible, that would not have been a good idea. ‘Would you have given any of it up for me?’, I asked when the desserts arrived. ‘No’ came the brusque reply in between mouthfuls of chocolate, ‘it’s far too good to share’. Which nicely sums up Pierre Victoire.

We Salute The General Eliott
Reviewed by Kelly Gavaghan Saturday 30th May
There is a nice story behind the reopening of The General Eliott in South Hinksey. Having stood empty and forlorn for 6 years one of the villagers; Helen Hazelwood, talked her husband into buying it having never run a pub before. She wants to keep it as traditional as possible offering good beer and great food served up with lashings of old fashioned hospitality and that is certainly what we found on our visit. My partner Richard and I experienced a very warm welcome and were pleased to see that the pub was a ‘proper pub’ with a number of punters dining. The barman was knowledgeable about the food and pleased my partner with the interesting selection of four local ales and one cider. Almost EVERYTHING on the menu is homemade, including the horseradish accompaniment with Richard’s starter of duo of Smoked Salmon. My starter of Scallops on Duck Breast with Raspberry Vinaigrette was delicious. The subtle creaminess of the scallops combined with the saltiness and deeper flavour of the duck breast dipped in the sweetness of the vinaigrette was perfection. For my main I ordered the 21 day aged Ribeye Steak and Chips with Green Beans and Salad as my main. The local steak was marbled with fat and bloody-juicy and the homemade chips were ‘just like my mum used to make!’ My partner’s plump mussels were beautifully steamed in local cider, cream and herbs, a delicious sauce that was mopped up with good hunks of Artisan bread. The ‘sweets’ were scrumptious and straight from the oven. We enjoyed Sticky Toffee Pudding and a Chocolate Brownie and sampled the (Italian) Chefs Special Tiramisu. I feel that The General Eliott will become renowned for desserts because they are so very, very good. The Chocolate Brownie was warm and gooey with a lovely crust and accompanied with Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream and the Tiramisu was perfectly made as one would hope from an Italian chef! Helen, we both feel, deserves to do well. She is passionate and sincere which is very endearing! The General Eliott is a work in progress, but safe to say they are off to a good start.

The Riverside Brasserie
Reviewed by Richard Rosser Thursday 18th June
Located in Bray Marina on the River Thames, The Riverside Brasserie is just a 30 minute drive from Oxford –a short trip which takes you to a riverside paradise. My guest and I visited this beautiful location on a balmy summer’s evening, careering past the Ascot traffic heading for the M40 towards the Marina full of gleaming boats of all shapes and sizes. I’d had the good fortune to experience The Riverside Brasserie earlier in the year, but due to the slightly chilly weather, had to eat inside – no hardship I can assure you. But on such a wonderful evening, there wasn’t a decision to be made when asked ‘inside or out, sir?’ The restaurant has undergone a recent refurbishment with a bright, fresh décor plus an increase in capacity. The sun was still fierce as we took our seats just after 7pm, although a hint of an evening chill was creeping upon us, kept firmly at bay by the wonderful heaters standing over us. As we watched rowers, swans and the like make their way up and down stream, we really couldn’t have been in a more glorious location and we still hadn’t enjoyed the real wonders of The Riverside Brasserie, the food and great service. My guest chose the King Prawn Cocktail with Marie Rose sauce to start with, whilst I had the Gravedlax with sweet mustard dressing and cucumber. Both starters were consumer with gusto and I must say the Gravedlax was particularly enjoyable, complemented perfectly by the mustard dressing and cucumber. Beautifully presented, wonderfully prepared the food was superb throughout the meal. Our waitress and waiter were engaging, knowledgeable about the food and ever attentive. We couldn’t have asked for more. The restaurant has new lunch and dinner menus plus a great breakfast menu – the first time The Riverside Brasserie has ever opened for breakfast from 10am to noon followed by afternoon tea at 3pm. With the extended opening times every day until August, you really have no excuse to visit! We managed to share an apricot and apple crumble with vanilla ice cream to round off a sublime meal, not forgetting the bottle of chilled Louis Jadot, 2013, Macon Villages. Having now visited The Riverside Brasserie twice, I cannot fault the location, the service and the food. All score exceptionally highly for me. It’s rare to experience such consistency in any restaurant, so take a drive outside of Oxford for a change, for a lazy Sunday lunch, an intimate dinner for two or even a business lunch. ‘Impressive’ is just the start….
