Welcome to Living In Oxford

Welcome to the March edition of Living in Oxford.

We’ve had great fun over the past few weeks putting together this issue, but nobody more than Audrey and Fabienne who have been gallivanting around Oxford reviewing as much as they possibly can in 24 hours. A key part of their ’24 hours in Oxford City Centre’ review was a visit to Malmaison Hotel where they enjoyed a fabulous meal and a good night’s sleep after a busy day viewing Oxford’s finest sites. So sit back and enjoy reading our reviews of City Sightseeing, Bodleian Library, Shanghai 30’s, The House and The Duke of Cambridge, Carfax Tower, PB Conway, Clinic 95, Killingworth Castle, Cherwell Boathouse and 5 Mile View. And don’t forget our big Awards ceremony on 15th April at Weston Library where the cream of our TOP250 establishments will find out if they are leaders in their respective fields in Oxfordshire. To enter your establishment or vote for your favourite, visit the Living in Oxford Awards page at www.inoxford.com. If you would like more information about the Awards, please call us on 01865 742211. Have a great month.

“The historical city of Oxford offers a wide range of activities for all ages and we were about to discover as much of them as possible during our 24 hours in Oxford. Malmaison Hotel

Reviewed by Audrey Valée & Fabienne Glatow 12th February

Located in the oldest quarter of the city – Oxford Castle Quarter Malmaison Hotel, unique, unlike any other hotels in Oxford. What makes Malmaison very special is its history, since it was actually a prison until 1996. After significant redevelopment, it became one of the most renowned hotels in southern England in 2006 after Her Majesty the Queen opened Oxford Castle. The historic yet beautiful façade which greets you when walking up to the hotel entrance is incredible – Malmaison has its very own cobbled street red carpet leading up to this stunning entrance, flanked by some of the Quarter’s other eateries. Inside the hotel, there is a mix of modern furniture enshrined in history. However, the contrast works well – the dark colours of the furniture and the light give you an idea of what this former prison must have been like for the inmates, but for hotel guests, the ambience is chic and sensual. Checking it was effortless and before we knew it we were in our room. Even had we had to wait, the reception has plenty of comfortable sofas to recline on. We were welcomed by a nice note from the hotel’s GM, Emma Doré, and a selection of naughty cakes. We also had a call from reception once we had settled in to ask if everything was to our liking – a nice touch which makes you realise this is a very special hotel. Each room and suite has its own history. Three formers cells (each cell housed three prisoners) have been merged to become spacious rooms. Fortunately, the living conditions are obviously much better than previous inhabitants might have experienced! Each of the 95 rooms is very well equipped with everything you need for your stay such as a TV, a mini fridge, a kettle to make some tea or coffee , etc. The fast WIFI, the super-comfortable beds and the soft light provide the perfect mood for relaxation. The bathroom includes a shower but also a free standing bath, perfect to relax in after a busy day! There is a small balcony to help you appreciate the breathtaking view of the Castle Mound (which can be climbed) and also the old Saxon Tower. In summer it must be wonderful to sit on the terrace at the entrance to Oxford Castle and enjoy the views al fresco with a long, cool drink! After a superb night’s sleep, we had breakfast in the brasserie, a buffet with a wide selection on offer including toast, cereal, fruit, tea and coffee. Thank you Mal! It was wonderful!

Bengal and Modernity: Early 20th-century Art in India

Tuesday 3rd March to Monday 1st June: In the early 20th century, a wave of nationalism swept across the Indian subcontinent. In Bengal, several artists focused on revitalizing Indian cultural history and spirituality, deliberately turning away from academic expressions of realism practised in the various British art schools in India. United with artists such as Klee, Kandinsky and Itten by mutual artistic interest in cubism, primitivism and abstraction, these Indian artists found new ways of expressing anti-colonial resistance. 24 Hours in Oxford City Centre The historical city of Oxford offers a wide range of activities for all ages and we were about to discover as much of them as possible during our 24 hours in Oxford. The two of us, Audrey from France and myself, Fabienne from Germany, had a busy schedule involving some of Oxford’s most popular tourist attractions, different city tours via bus and by foot and a variety of restaurants and bars, finally ending in one of Oxford’s most famous hotels, Malmaison. Although I had been living in Oxford since September, there were still a lot of new things to see. On a coolish and grey morning the two of us started with a guided tour through the Bodleian Library, a unique building regarding its architecture and decoration. The tour led us through the old library of Thomas Bodley, founder of this impressive construction, over to the Radcliff Camera which is said to be the town’s landmark but also works as a student’s library, which we enviously admired. (More about on page 25). Close to the Bodleian library you can find the Covered Market. Hidden under a vast roof, visitors enter a much calmer and smaller part of Oxford comprising lots of independent shops close to each other in narrow alleyways. Here you find everything, from groceries to clothes, chocolate to flowers, cheese to meat. After browsing through the market we felt like visiting one of the most celebrated bookshops in Europe. Yes that’s right; Blackwell’s is incredibly popular for the immense selection of books for all occasions, especially among the colleges, with students, academics, tourists and locals filling this tardis like establishment. With its basement containing around 250,000 different books (!!!),

22

Blackwell’s is safely listed in the ‘Guinness Book world of records’. Very friendly and open-minded employees are on hand to find the right book just for you. Victor, who showed us around, was very charming and incredibly knowledgeable. Next to Blackwell’s, Experience Oxfordshire’s walking tours are based. In a small group you start to discover the city by foot to take a closer look at key sights. It made us see the city in a different light as our guide pointed out so many details in the history of the buildings. After lots of walking and listening, it was time for lunch. Shanghai 30’s is the ideal place to go for a special lunch with Asian flair. With a flexible and varied menu, the restaurant was an extraordinary treat for us partly exhausted students. (More about on page 72). Feeling rejuvenated, it was time to check in to our hotel, Malmaison, located in the former Castle and prison at Oxford Castle. Following significant renovation, the hotel truly is a work of art and took our breath away. Wow! Three original cells now make one guest room, but they are superb rooms and no need for complaints! We checked in and left our luggage at the front desk because our tour was far from over! We had to relax and fully unwind! A perfect location to unwind was ‘The House’, a cocktail bar in Wheatsheaf Yard, just off High Street. Tastefully decorated, The House is cool yet welcoming. It’s a great location for a colourful cocktail, a glass of wine or a bottle of beer. A haven from the bustling City Centre, a chance to catch your breath or a great place to meet friends before or after dinner. There’s also a private area on the first floor with a pool table and separate bar. (More about on page 73).

We returned to Malmaison for dinner (More about on page 68) and after a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, we longed to stay another night, but no, we had more to see and made our way to Carfax Tower. Climbing up the 99 steps to the observation deck of the tower was worth it when we got there. All around us was Oxford in all its magnificence. What a wonderful way to see our new favourite city! (More about on page 24). Our final ‘appointment’ was on the ‘City Sightseeing Open Top Bus Tour’, a must-do for everyone who wants to get an overview of Oxford in a more relaxed way. The automatic guide during the tour (available in 13 different languages) gives you the key information for each attraction. A really nice way to get to know the city, especially during the summer months. As we did not have the time to do all of the activities we planned in exactly 24 hours, one of us decided to go to Oxford Castle Unlocked the next day. The years of history and some anecdotes of the Castle and prisoners are told by a costumed character guide. After climbing to the top of the Saxon St-George’s Tower where we could admire the view of Oxford, the visit continues in the cells and the old Crypt. That was where our 24 hour experience in Oxford City Centre ended, an adventure that really captured us in all its wonder. Now it’s up to you to decide where you start and finish. For us, it was The Duke of Cambridge in Little Clarendon Street for another well deserved cocktail!

Carfax Tower

Reviewed by Audrey Valée & Fabienne Glatow 12th February

Another highly recommended tourist attraction is Carfax Tower. In the middle of Oxford City Centre it protrudes over all other buildings and lures visitors to relish an astonishing view over the tops of Oxford. Situated on the crossroad of St Aldate's (south), Cornmarket Street (north), Queen Street (west) and the High Street (east), the tower is the only remnant of St. Martins Church from the 13th Century. Carfax, or also called St. Martins Tower, is the only one left out of five different towers all spread along the streets of Oxford and so another popular historical sight. For less than £3 you’re invited to step up and enjoy this delightful perspective of Oxford. While climbing up the 99 steps of the 74 feet (23m) tall tower you come along one floor where the history and development of the whole building is shortly explained on information plates giving visitors an overview of its history . The narrow staircase, where you should mind your head (honestly, at all times!), leads you then upwards to the top. Wow what a view! A bit out of breath when we reached the platform, the view was mesmerising. In the one direction, many of the colleges and buildings can be discovered from a very different point of view. Turning around 180 degrees the certainly calmer and greener aspects of Oxford. Seeing the city from above creates a totally different image and is for us one of the must-do’s during a stay here. The tower owns six bells as well but they are just used for special occasions by the Oxford Society of Change Ringers. It was a wonderful experience to fall in love with the city’s architecture once again …… on a higher level!

Glatow Bodleian Library Audrey Valée & Fabienne 12th February

With its astonishing architecture, the Bodleian Library is certainly one of the most essential places to visit in Oxford. It is one of the oldest libraries in Europe but also the second biggest after the British Library (11 millions books). Plenty of History, take your time to absorb all that the library has to offer you to understand what happened during the centuries - nevertheless, the Extended Tour was well summed up. The Extended Tour offers the opportunity to visit more than Duke Humfrey’s Library and the Divinity School. After the visit of Convocation House and Chancellor's Court, and the Old Schools Quadrangle, the guide brings us to the Divinity School and Duke Humfrey’s Library where movie scenes were shot, such as Harry Potter. When you see all of those old books, it is incredible to believe that they have been on the shelves for so many years. It was like being in a film, seeing things I had only seen in France, on TV or at the movies. Even if the books are the most important thing in the library, beautiful ceiling paintings and architecture small details – especially the impressive architecture of the Divinity School’s ceiling - are a massive part of the Bodleian’s history. The Radcliffe Camera - which is the emblem of the city- and the grounds, hold a vast collection of books as all books ever published in the UK are deposited to the Bodleian. In Duke Humfrey’s Library as well as in The Radcliffe Camera, it is easy to appreciate what a real privilege it is to be able to access these amazing buildings. During the 90 minutes tour, thanks to the explanations we received about the most important moments of Oxford’s history and the role of the buildings, the guide made us travel through different periods of the Bodleian Library in an engaging and incredibly interesting way. www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/whats-on/visit

City Sightseeing

Reviewed by Audrey Valée & Fabienne Glatow 12th February

If you have arrived in Oxford and you don’t know the city, make sure you jump on board one of fabulous City Sightseeing buses – they’re hard to miss in their stunning red and green designs! All you have to do is visit the City Centre and climb aboard – or if you prefer a green bus, take the Guide Friday Green bus. Take a seat downstairs (30 seats) or upstairs (45 seats) for only 1 stop, 8 stops or the entire tour, the 24h or 48h tickets give you the opportunity to travel within the city whenever you want. It is possible to get on the bus or stop as many times as you wish during the validity of your ticket. Hop on and hop off at one of the 19 stops allocated in the city centre. Thanks to the bus tour, it’s really easy to discover all the key sites and attractions of Oxford. In an hour you can absorb Oxford’s main streets, our beautiful colleges, Oxford Castle, historic museums and the odd pub! If you don’t speak or understand English (which means you probably can’t read this!) don’t worry! Your non English speaking friends and family can choose the language they would prefer to hear the tour in and sit back and take it all in in French, Spanish, Chinese and more (13 in total). Enjoy the short recorded commentaries about the history of the buildings, places or quarters. Kids needn’t feel left out as commentaries for children are now available on tour. You can buy your ticket online for both the red and green buses, from the bus, the City Sightseeing outlet in Oxford Rail Station or in various locations in the city. Don’t hesitate to combine your tour ticket with other city attractions such as Carfax Tower or a river cruise on the Thames. There’s no better way to see Oxford.

RE-FASHIONED

Friday 6th March to Saturday 25th April: The Garments as Art exhibition as part of RE-FASHIONED, presents work by four artists that connects through their use of garments and textile making processes as a base for their work. Flattened clothing is overlaid with printed images, garments are cut-up and woven into other forms, and elements of garment and textile making processes are revealed and re-fashioned. The work explores a range of ideas including the gendered nature of textile making, clothing’s relationship with identity and memory and the fragility of the human form.

Accommodation Review:

Five Mile View Guest House

Our son was a student at Oxford University; from my point of view, this was something to forget! Oxford, beautiful though it may be, is far from car-friendly. Several times a year, I remember a frantic dash from car to dorm, laden with luggage and books - only to reverse the process eight weeks later. Three years flew by, yet his adopted city remained - to us - unknown. So my husband and I returned for a long weekend, happily unburdened from all that student clobber! We booked the Five Mile View, to the north of the city. The location is truly excellent. Not only did we find decent road links, but buses to Oxford stopped right outside. We arrived in the afternoon to a warm welcome from the landlady. Check-in was simple, and we were shown to our bright, wellequipped room. We were at the back of the building, facing the spacious garden. Certainly a tranquil spot, far from the crowds and the students! Suffice it to say that our son has … slightly different tastes in food and entertainment to us. Luckily our landlady was full of ideas and recommendations. On her counsel, we visited the Ashmolean in the late afternoon, before heading to Christ Church Meadows for an evening stroll. This was capped by a few pre-dinner drinks at The Bear, one of Oxford’s oldest pubs. We again took the landlady’s advice, and visited Cibo, a brilliant Italian restaurant in Summertown. One short bus ride, and we were back in our cozy room. We were offered a choice of breakfasts, but opted for the full English (who wouldn’t?). I’m pleased to say that Five Mile View’s breakfast reached - and exceeded - my husband’s expectations. Perfect to fuel the day ahead. Our son had (somehow!) neglected to tell us about the stunning views around the city. The hotel is a stone’s throw from Woodstock, where we spent the day. Blenheim Palace was a must-see, especially when you throw in their home-made cakes. That afternoon, we took a hike through some of the aweinspiring Cotswold countryside, before returning to the guesthouse to freshen up for the evening. Oxford really is a splendid place for a long weekend - if only we had discovered this sooner! Five Mile View is an ideal base for exploring city and countryside: calm, clean, and well-connected. One to remember, indeed. Reviewed by J Hyde 528 Banbury Road, Oxford, OX2 8EG Tel: 01865 558747 Web: www.5mileview.com www.inoxford.com

Restaurant Review:

Killingworth Castle

Written by Richard Rosser 6th February

The Killingworth Castle has always been on the list as a ‘must visit’ so when we got the opportunity, we went there…..twice in the space of eight days! Owners Jim and Claire Alexander have created something very special in the Oxfordshire countryside, just five minutes drive from Woodstock. The Killingworth Castle dates back to 1637 and Jim, Claire and the team have certainly done a fine job restoring the ‘Castle’ to its ‘former glory’ as the website says, although I very much doubt this excellent establishment has ever been able to boast such a smart kitchen, cosy pub and intimate dining room as it does now. ‘The Castle’ is also what your local pub should be, the heart of the village (of Wootton), ranking it 2nd in the Traditional Pub Category at the 2014 Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards. The food? Sublime, quite simply. Award winning chef Phil Currie works wonders, as we found out, twice! Lidia Dhorne is the charming resident manager who makes you feel at home in this beautifully friendly pub restaurant. We first visited on the opening day of the Six nations with a bar area populated by an excited crowd watching England take on Wales. The bar area has tables in an adjacent room or in the bar itself, ideal if you want the real connection with the pub. Everything worked perfectly, with diners seemingly oblivious to the rugby and vice versa. We were taken to the back of the pub to one of two more private dining areas where church benches were placed either side of sturdy wooden tables. We didn’t lose the connection with the bar as the occasional cry would waft into the dining room from the bar area…in fact it became something of a conundrum to guess who was beating who! Lidia was the perfect host. Engaging, unhurried and knowledgeable. Tina enjoyed a ‘Bath Tub’ gin and tonic to start with whilst I was driving so on the water, which would normally be a bit of a downer but although wine accompanying any meal is a pleasure, I really enjoyed being able to savour the food for what it was and it was incredible. Tina had the ‘Potted Bibury trout, celeriac remoulade and rye bread’ to start and the clean plate would suggest it was a big thumbs up from Tina. I went for the ‘Confit pheasant croquette, black pudding purée and pickled carrots’. This was an unusual combination for me as I’m not a big fan of black pudding but the dish worked well and was a great start. For our main courses, Tina chose the ‘Gloucester old spot pork belly, scallop and squid ink cannelloni, artichoke purée, hispi cabbage’. I’d never seen anything like it. Ingenious I think I should say. The cannelloni was like nothing I had ever seen before and the balance between pork, scallop and squid was, according to Tina, incredible. I was, seemingly, on a game drive and chose the ‘Roast venison haunch, haggis, root vegetable dauphinoise, charred sprouting broccoli’. Oh my word! This was stunning. Perfectly cooked venison with delicious vegetables and a side of creamed potato. The ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’ were so good that Tina had this eight days later on Valentine’s day when we returned for our encore. We shared an imaginatively created rhubarb and custard for dessert, but we were well beaten in truth. We went back eight days later…..what else is there to say!

Restaurant Review:

Malmaison Brasserie

Reviewed by Audrey Valée & Fabienne Glatow 12th February

As if staying at Malmaison wasn’t enough of a treat, we were also booked in to eat in one of our Editor’s favourite restaurants. The ‘Brasserie’ located in the cellar of the main building offers diners exquisite dishes with a wide range of delicious wines. Our reservation was for 8pm and we arrived promptly through down the stony stairs into the softly lit brasserie, looking forward to what was in store. Our table was located at the end of the restaurant providing us with an excellent vantage point to view this busy brasserie at work. The wooden furniture suits the room’s appearance in every detail, classic and charming at the same time. There’s a swanky bar that greets you as you enter the brasserie, a perfect stop off point before taking your seat. Browsing through the menu we both fell in love with the MalBurger, one of the specials of the Brasserie. It was love at first site. We had both, separately as it turned out, seen promotional shots of Malmaison, both showing the MalBurger. I think we had both made our minds up long before we took our seats! There is much more to the Brasserie than the MalBurger. In fact our editor pleaded with us to order the seared tuna which he raved about, or the monkfish which he claimed was the best he had ever had. But no, we defied him! To accompany our meal we had a lovely bottle of house white which suited us both, although, yes, I know, we should have had red…. but we were in a rebellious mood! Maybe it was the prison vibe getting to us! There was a lot to our mains, so much so that we knew a starter would be too much. We did, however, manage dessert! We went for the crunchy apple pie (the recommendation of our waitress and ours as well) and some scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with dark melted chocolate and marshmallows. (No wonder you couldn’t manage a starter, Ed!) This was a wonderful experience. The atmosphere was excellent, the food first class and the service great. There is no escaping this is a beautifully appointed restaurant, but remind yourself of what it once was and it’s kind of weird to think you’re eating in a prison. But that’s the attraction. The link with the past makes this experience unique. During the summer, there are some great places to eat outside of Malmiason, in the exercise yard or on the terrace upstairs. Together with the accommodation ((More about on page 6)) this has to be my restaurant highlight during my stay in Oxford. Ten out of ten! And that burger! Well, it’s a must!

Cherwell Boathouse

Reviewed by John Hobart 4th February 2015

At 111 years old the Cherwell Boathouse is one of the best established and most iconic buildings in Oxford, and it continues to impress with its location on the banks of the Cherwell and top quality food. There is a sense of adventure as you walk down the path leading to the Boathouse, especially if you do so, as we did, on a cold winter’s night with a full moon overhead. Tucked behind residential north Oxford the Boathouse has a sense of seclusion, heightened by the constant sound of the river and wildlife, and in daylight the sight of surrounding fields and meadows. The Boathouse itself has an imposing bulk to it, but as soon as you enter there is an intimate welcoming bar, a waiting area, and friendly staff to greet you. The décor of the restaurant is simple with exposed brick and heritage green walls, river themed prints and a range of table sizes with large French windows which are thrown open in the summer to better enjoy the setting with a glass of pimms. The wine menu is extensive and award-winning in its own right. While this is a little intimidating, the waiting staff are able to guide and advise on what to try - by the glass or the bottle. The food menu is seasonal, reflecting local produce and what’s available. For the current Winter Menu this means rich warming flavours such as cauliflower velouté, braised lamb, and orange & white chocolate cheesecake. The selection we chose was starters of pear, shallot & goats cheese tarte tatin, and confit & seared quail with textures of beetroot; followed by mains of Pan roasted Brixham turbot, and Roasted guinea fowl; and for desert apple parfait with honeycomb & (amazing) mini doughnuts, and Hot chocolate fondant with raspberry sorbet. That the food was all very good indeed goes (almost) without saying, but particular mention should go to the tarte tatin, seared quail, and apple parfait which truly could not be faulted. All were beautifully presented, flavourful but balanced, perfectly seasoned and quite delicious. What was a joy at the Boathouse was that we hardly noticed the waiting staff. They were so unobtrusive and efficient, but also knowledgeable and friendly when asked for guidance on wines or the method of cooking. We were left to enjoy our meal. Added to the great service, delicious food, and perfect setting, the value for money is excellent at three courses for under £25. There is a reason why this restaurant won the award for lifetime achievement at the 2014 Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards, and a reason why I’ll return! Shanghai 30’s

Reviewed by Audrey Valée & Fabienne Glatow 12th February

If you are searching for an international lunch or dinner during your stay in Oxford you will find a wide range of restaurants, but high on this list is Shanghai 30’s on St Aldate’s, a first floor restaurant opposite Christ Church.

Established in 2005 overlooking the gardens of Christ Church College, the former Bishop’s Palace has been gracefully restored to capture the stylish and classy ambience of 1930’s Shanghai. You are always guaranteed a warm welcome at Shanghai 30’s in St Aldates, just a two minute walk from Carfax in the centre of Oxford. The Royal ‘line up’ can be a little intimidating but it is always intended to make you feel special and set you up for a great experience. The Chef of the restaurant and one of just a few Taiwanese Sichuan in the UK, George Lee, regaled us with some of the most common and popular dishes of his country. I for my part ordered the cashew chicken in combination with a variation of rice, whilst my colleague, Audrey, chose the sizzling chicken which is served on a teppan plate and therefore arrived boiling hot at our table and impressed us A LOT! But this is really typical for a Shanghai kitchen. I have been told that this kind of cooking is known to work with a lot of spices, the heat giving the cook more flexibility to satisfy the customers desires. The menu is diverse and caters for all tastes. George also served us the pineapple chicken, served in one half of the actual fruit and some spring and prawn rolls, all delicious! Although the dessert list was varied and extensive, we were so full we had to pass and settle for two espresso coffees. George then invited us to sample some Remy Martin Lois XIII Cognac, probably the best brandy available. I am almost lost for words. What an experience! There is also a takeaway service, great for students or local businesses. Shanghai 30’s, Winner of the 2008 Remy Martin Award. Lunch: Tues - Fri 12 noon - 2.30pm. Dinner: Mon - Fri 6pm - 11pm. Sat and Sun (all day) 12 noon - 11pm (Sunday 10.30pm). Dim Sum Served daily During Lunch Hours.

“I have nothing but praise for Maria and the team at Clinic 95. At first I was bamboozled but everything was explained to me so carefully that I had the utmost confidence before and during surgery.” Yvonne

Health Article:

Life-Changing Dentistry These days when Yvonne walks into the room her smile lights it up. But when Yvonne first came to Clinic 95 it was a very different story. She was, by her own admission, in a ‘bit of a state’. She had been visiting her dentist regularly, but her problems were mounting. Her teeth were loose and her gums were receding; she didn’t look or feel anywhere near her best and she was in a good deal of pain. Yvonne’s dentist, referred her to Dr Maria Hardman at Life-Changing Dentistry. He had done a sterling job but he was fighting a losing battle. Yvonne had always had a fear of dentists and he had done much to help her overcome her nervousness, but he had run out of treatment options. ‘We discussed possible solutions’, recalls Yvonne, ‘but I have to say I was really quite frightened at the prospect of surgery…..so I went along to meet Maria with a certain degree of trepidation.’ At that first meeting with Yvonne we did what we always do. We listened. It’s all very well to tell someone that dentistry these days is almost always completely pain-free; but when, like Yvonne, you have a real fear of needles, then words alone will do little to reassure. Basically you have to gain the trust and confidence of the patient and demonstrate that you understand their anxiety. You then need to convince them that you will be able to overcome it. ‘Maria took on board everything I told her’, feels Yvonne, ‘and answered my questions with refreshing honesty. She told me that I may need a bone graft if I were to have implants and she explained the denture option fully. At no stage was I under any pressure to make a decision, other than in my own time. I was very happy with all the answers Maria gave me and ended up excited, rather than nervous, about the prospect of having implants’. Yvonne told us that, as a child, she had been given gas to ‘put her to sleep’ during dental treatment. She had come round frightened and ended up biting the dentist. Such anecdotes have an amusing side, but also show why so many people of 60 plus have a very real aversion to dentistry and find it hard to accept that ‘it will not hurt’. With this in mind we took particular care to explain in detail to Yvonne the fast & fixed procedure we were recommending and to reassure her that there would be no unpleasant surprises or pain. As a result Yvonne ‘sailed through’ the same day fast & fixed procedure with ease. Conscious sedation ensured she was relaxed throughout and by the end of the day she was smiling the smile that has never gone away. So much has changed in Yvonne’s life since we placed fast & fixed implants. She eats foods, such as steak, that she would have avoided. She can laugh without embarrassment. She has no pain from her teeth and gums. She looks younger. She feels younger. And she just won’t stop smiling. 95 West Way, Botley, Oxford, OX2 9JY Tel: 01865 258110 email: enquiry@teeth-implants.info Web: www.teeth-implants.info www.inoxford.com

PB Conway

Experience and Artistry

Reviewed by Richard Rosser 6th February

Need a sight test? Need new glasses? How about something classical? How about something designer? How about your very own custom made glasses with what I call ‘fairytale’ lenses? PB Conway can cater for your every need with superb levels of professionalism and service that are so rare these days. When I visited the George Street premises, I was met with a warm smile and years of knowledge. Bobbie showed me in to ‘Mr Conway’s’ sight test room where I experienced a thorough sight test. No gizmo’s or weird contraptions in sight, just Mr Conway, examining my eyes, using the usual sight test apparatus, but I left that room knowing Mr Conway knew every millimetre of my eyes and what prescription I needed for my new glasses. Bobbie took over from there, showing me a range of stunning frames and within seven days I was back to work and I could see properly. I quipped when I returned to see Paul Conway and his sister Tess that I could now work more….not being sure if this was a good thing! But the glasses were spot on and that’s experience for you, the proof was in the pudding. The business has been operating since 1934 when Paul and Tess father opened the shop having relocated from Jarrow (where some Conway family members still have opticians). Paul is the ophthalmic optician and Tess a dispensing optician, although Tess isn’t as involved in the business as she once was. Tess had a file of old adverts and letters, invoices and other memorabilia helping me to understand the history of PB Conway. Nonetheless, the Conway family clearly flows strongly through this wonderful establishment with grandchildren popping in to say hello during our interview and other family members involved in the business alongside Bobbie , Emma, Manna, Morgan, Nicholas and Maria. Aside from the standard services such as sight tests, providing glasses and contact lenses, PB Conway are very adept at surprising with some rather unusual services, as Tess explains. “Because we have been here such a long time we have kept equipment, old designer designs and they are now at a premium so we have a Retro Room in the shop but it is not for the feint-hearted, it’s for the dedicated. The items are to view and to buy. Some of them are museum pieces because they have been surpassed by modern technology. Some remain interesting and collectable.” One other area which fascinated me was what I affectionately refer to as the ‘fairytale’ collection created on site by PB Conway’s own laboratory technician, Morgan. “These can’t be mass produced, they are very individual and we have to match the frames to your face shape. We can do Mickey Mouse lenses (Ed - as in the character shape, not bad ones!) but Mickey has to be in the correct proportions to suite your face shape.” Morgan is quite particular about this and that underlines the unbelievable level of professionalism running through PB Conway at all levels. The job has to be perfect otherwise it’s not worth doing and that’s a rare commodity in any business these days to find in such abundance. So if you’re looking for engraved lenses and perhaps some diamonds, visit PB Conway. Whether it’s fairytale lenses or good quality lenses, whatever you choose, you know it will be first class. 44-46 George Street, Oxford OX1 2AQ Tel: 01865 244667 Web: www.pbconwayopticians.co.uk www.inoxford.com
