Magnolia Park Golf & Country Club Experience playing at Magnolia Park Golf & Country Club, one of the country’s most challenging and picturesque golf courses. With our sweeping championship 18-hole course of around 7,000 yards constructed to the highest specifications and set in over 200 acres of Buckinghamshire countryside, Magnolia Park is known to many as the closest a parkland course can be to a Links, due to its beautiful water features and sometimes windy conditions. Played from the forward tees, the subtle undulating fairways offer an exciting game for golfers of all abilities, whilst the competition tees give the more experienced golfers a course with Championship potential. The Championship course is complemented by our 9-hole Par 3 academy course, driving range and putting green, plus a well-stocked Pro Shop with leading brands. We also offer golfers the very latest in training technology and we’re the only UK golf club with the amazing 3D Motion Golf, the most advanced 3D data capture system for golf swing analysis, instruction and club fitting. Magnolia Park is a social and proactive club with a busy competition calendar and players of all ages and abilities are always made welcome. Last year Magnolia Park was proud to host the Jamega Pro Golf Tour & Pro Am and it was so successful that we are hosting it again this year in August! Magnolia Park is the perfect venue for weddings and private parties and our function suite is beautifully appointed with plenty of natural daylight, a sunny bar terrace and stunning views across the course & countryside. We’re adding a 30 bedroom hotel to the club house from Autumn 2014 so quality accommodation will be available for your wedding or party guests. It’s also an ideal venue for hosting corporate golf days, business meetings and conferences and with our leisure packages offering the country club experience of clay shooting, archery and fishing, its perfect for corporate and team building days.

"I have played Magnolia Park many times since it was established in 2001. I have always found it to be a real test and a pleasure to play on. It is easily accessible from Oxford and the off course facilities are second to none with the Clubhouse as good as I have come across anywhere." - Colin Rosser, Chairman, The In Oxford Group To enquire about memberships or holding an event at Magnolia Park, please call us on 01844 239700 or email us at info@magnoliapark.co.uk. The Didcot Railway Centre

Interview by Elouise Powell

28th March 2014

In the heart of Didcot, famous for its train station and industrialised power station lies a celebration of the golden age in train travel the Didcot Railway Centre. 20 acres of awe inspiring mechanics gleaming with over five generations of history. Entering through the modern Didcot Parkway station I use a vintage rotary telephone alerting my arrival, instantly igniting my love for forgotten classics. I proceed to be warmly welcomed by Anne, a volunteer for the centre who is passionate and knowledgeable about the trains which she calls her ‘babies’. The centre is an incredible contrast of man-made constructions including locomotives, carriages, wagons and woodland surrounding a picnic area where visitors snack on packed lunches watching trains surge past. Left to wander blissfully anywhere and everywhere, visitors get to access all areas to make their visit truly unforgettable. Notable sights along the journey include the only working coal stage in the UK; where coal is stored before being gravity fed into waiting empty tenders, the original 1932 built engine shed housing locomotives, some of which date back to the 19th century, and the ‘Locomotive Workshops’ where you can climb into the caboose and imagine being a conductor for the afternoon. Starting your personal tour experience at the turntable, you can leisurely stroll and visit the main demonstration line. On steam days you can board the working train and travel along one of the centre's running lines, and make your way to the GWR museum and archive to view antique models, toy trains, old uniforms, signals, posters and pictures. Continue on to the carriage shed housing over 40 carriages and admire the ornate paintings on older carriages. End your journey around this magnificent centre at the refreshment room serving delicious food before heading to the bookstall and gift shop for delightful mementos of your trip to the centre. Personally, I came to the Railway Centre to further my curiosity about how far trains have progressed throughout history. The contrast as you leave the modern trains behind and dive head first into steam built engines is engaging and fascinating. The centre is entertaining for children, teenagers and adults with plenty to do for all. I will be returning to the centre to enjoy their many events such as the Gala’s, Heritage Diesel Days, Teddy Bears’ Picnic and the Steam Days. The calendar for 2014 is bursting with fantastic days out at the Didcot Railway Centre, so head to Didcot and start your own experience. Further information Admission prices: Adult- £5.00 - £12.00; Child- £4.00 - £12.00; 60+ - £4.50 - £11.00; Family- £16.00 - £39.00.

Millets Farm Falconry

Reviewed by Matthew Wright

10th March 2014

Falconry should be the UK’s National Sport. Controversial? Let's examine the facts. 1. Embedded in the English language Words such as hoodwinked, codger, chaperon, and phrases such as with bated breath, shake a tail feather, or wrapped around your finger, all derive from falconry. 2. Culture From Shakespeare 'though that her jesses were my dear heart strings' to Yeats 'turning and turning in the widening gyre, the falcon cannot hear the falconer' to modern cinema 'Kes - a kestrel for a knave', falconry has inspired more serious cultural output than most other sports. 3. Exports - The UK leads the way internationally; e.g. the huge success in cross-breeding falcons for sale to Arabia. It's fair to say that James Channon, owner of Millets Farm Falconry Centre, is passionate about his birds, having bred his first one aged 17 (inventively called 'Number 1' - the names did get better with time), and now the proud owner of 70, all housed on-site in spacious aviaries and perches, complete with a bespoke flying field seating up to 100 people. There are currently 3 demonstrations per day on the flying field (your ticket allows unlimited visits on the same day), and various pre-booked packages ranging from 2 hours to a full day’s hunting. Tom (my 14-year old son) and I attended the 2 hour ‘Advanced Entry’ session which included handling, and a guided tour. Teenagers are not normally renowned for their enthusiasm, but it’s funny how holding a Harris Hawk 6 inches away focuses their attention, especially with James’s amusing line in stand-up comedy going on in the background, “Ask me anything - what I don’t know, I’m usually very good at making up”. The tour was fascinating - you can wander around by yourself, picking up lots of information; from cerebral adult stuff (How Birds Soar) to ‘urgh’ kids’ facts (owls collecting dung to attract beetles for their owlets to practise upon). However, James’s tour added a whole extra dimension - Tom and I particularly liked hearing about the birds’ names; Ron, Reggie, and Mad Frankie (the vultures), Bumblebee, Bonecrusher, and Shockwave (Whitefaced owls = Transformers), and (our favourites), the cute burrowing owls, all named Joe by James’s daughter Maddie. To celebrate their first birthday at Millets Farm (having outgrown Fallowfields), a whole weekend of special activities is planned for 3-5th May - I’d strongly recommend going along… Consider it your national duty!

Arts Review:

Sarah Wiseman Gallery

Reviewed by by Lucy Howard Thursday 20th March

Nestled in the heart of Summertown, the beautiful Sarah Wiseman Gallery showcases a broad and inspiring hand-picked collection ranging from tiny delicate ceramics to breath-taking large scale contemporary landscape paintings. Whether you want to browse or make a purchase, the relaxed environment makes you want to linger. Owner Sarah Wiseman studied art history and volunteered at the Ashmolean Museum, but it was while working for an art dealer that she first saw a need for a contemporary art gallery in Oxford. Since she opened her gallery over fifteen years ago, it has more than filled this need, becoming one of Oxford’s premier spaces for contemporary art as well as becoming her life’s passion and a life’s work. Over the years the gallery has built an impressive reputation and a loyal clientele- and it’s not hard to see why. A carefully selected range of paintings, prints, sculptures and ceramics adorn the space, complementing each other and enhancing their surroundings. ‘Paintings don’t live in isolation,’ says Sarah. ‘This helps build a picture of what it would be like to have an artwork in your home.’ The gallery features local artists as well as artists from around the UK, and champions emerging talent as well as established artists. Working with every artist personally and building relationships with them ensures a detailed knowledge of their artistic practices, which includes visiting their studios and seeing first-hand how they work. ‘The interface with the artist is really exciting, and a wonderful learning curve,’ says Sarah, adding that it is a ‘delicate but important connection.’ She counts many of the gallery’s artists as friends. Sarah looks for artworks that start a conversation, break down barriers and get people talking, and add something new to the artists already on show. Quality is key. Each potential artwork is looked at in great detail, including the quality of the materials used and how they are handled, and its durability. ‘It has to stand the test of time,’ she explains. As well as showcasing a wide variety of artists, mediums and techniques, there is a range of prices on offer, which makes the gallery more accessible and informal than is often the case - and the experience doesn’t stop at selling. The gallery also offers framing, hanging and consultation services, so your chosen artwork can look its best and find its ideal place in your home. In addition to personal clients, the gallery works with local businesses, such as Hedges Law (a commission has recently been completed for their Wallingford office), and other projects include collaborating with organisations such as Artlink on commissioning artworks for local hospitals. A special exhibition will be on show in the gallery as part of Oxfordshire Artweeks in May, featuring paintings, printmaking and sculpture by local artists Bee Bartlett, Rachel Gracey and Richard Fox, who take inspiration from their local surroundings across Oxfordshire. 40-41 South Parade, Oxford, OX2 7JL Tel: 01865 515123 Web: www.wisegal.com www.inoxford.com

Restaurant Review:

No Suffering at Saffron!

Reviewed by Mark Greenwood 13th April 2014

On a pleasant April evening, my eldest Daughter, Carmel, and I journeyed to Summertown for a South Asian Food Odyssey. We were politely greeted and offered the table which we chose. Decor was smart and minimalist without being sparse though the Louis XIV Chandeliers felt slightly out of place! Papadums were offered and arrived with 5 accompaniments. The two tomato based chutneys deserve special mention being based on Sweet Chili Sauce and then enhanced with Spices as the very informative waiter, Mr. Sethu explained. In the meantime a large bottle of Bangla Beer arrived (underwhelming experience, bit watery), followed by the extremely well presented starter platter consisting of 5 items, Onion Bhaji, Lamb Bhaji, Veggie Samoosa, Chicken Tikka and Tikka Paneer. All this was accompanied by a salad which had a wonderful spicy dressing. We had never had a Lamb Bhaji before and will definitely have one again. The Tandoori Paneer was perfectly matched with a tamarind sauce, the Chicken unctuously tender with the Veggie Samoosa deserving a special mention, The pastry was light, each item of the filling could be picked out, no indescribable mush here! Packed a nice spicy punch too!! In choosing our mains, we noted the very reasonable pricing and also some interesting meats. Though there was no beef (boohoo!), there was DUCK, and not just one duck dish, but loads!! Duck Vindaloo anyone? Also Salmon made a couple of appearances. Always welcome. Our mains were Batak Ratchat (less spicy Duck Jalfrezi), Chicken Kandahari, Lamb Korai, Bhindi Bhaji and Sag Aloo. When it all arrived (having switched to Cobra Beer, yummy, and a Sauvignon Blanc from the Pays D’Oc) we wondered how we would finish! (We didn’t but left-overs made a great breakfast!). Naans and Chapattis were provided. The Garlic & Plain Naans were great though we thought the Peshawari was a bit too sweet. It was wonderful to be served the Korai sizzling in its mini wok, as it should be, assaulting the smell and sound senses and providing a bit of theatre! Korai does to an Indian restaurant what Fajitas do to Mexican food. Tasty too, with ginger shining to the fore. The duck dish went down a storm, delicately spiced and providing a foil to the Kandahari, which though not too hot, was brimming with flavour and refreshing acidity. The Bhindi and Sag Aloo were excellent with the Bhindi deserving special mention. In summary, a very pleasant experience with much to commend it for both of us. If I had to pick on something, it is the lack of a small Indian dessert menu, but, regrettably this seems to be quite common these days. Carmel and myself will be back. We won’t be suffering at Saffron! 204-206 Banbury Rd, Oxford, OX2 7BY Tel: 01865 512211 Web: www.saffronatoxford.co.uk www.inoxford.com

Jee Saheb

Reviewed by Rebecca Kashti

21st February 2014

The Jee Saheb is situated in North Parade, Jericho in what is a very special part of Oxford. Parking is very much down to luck but we were lucky and parked nearby. The décor of the restaurant is refreshing and different to the majority of Indian restaurants. The floors are wooden and the walls are white which really adds to the freshness of the place. It is also well lit, something some restaurants fail to do, but not so that the atmosphere is lost. There are none of the predictable wall colourings that are commonly seen in Indian restaurants. We were seated immediately on entering the restaurant, the welcome from the drinks waiter and the food waiter was warm and friendly. The drinks arrived immediately. We had different waiters for the food than the drinks which was a nice touch. The attentiveness of the waiters was exceptional throughout - and it was clear this was to all diners, not just us. The light and airy decor brought all attention back to the food which was very effective. Rather than focussing on a “busy” restaurant, you could focus on the food. The range of food and drinks was extensive and the chef's recommended menu was refreshingly different. The food itself was served with attention and full description of all the dishes by the waiters. We chose dishes we had not tries before and were pleasantly surprised. The starters of lamb chops and prawn pathia puri were very tasty and well presented. The puri was enormous but light to eat. Our main courses were from the chef’s recommended menu and were very good – again the size of the portions were generous. The meal was delicious, the food was so fresh and we could taste the different spices coming through. It certainly tasted like Indian home cooking and not the generic food you sometimes come across in restaurants. The atmosphere in the Jee Saheb is great - the clientele is diverse and comprises all age groups and backgrounds which makes it vibrant and engaging. It seemed to be a local restaurant for lots of people – not only those inside but also judging by the amount of people who waved as they walked past. 15 North Parade, Oxford, OX2 6LX Tel: 01865 513 773 Web: www.jeesaheb.co.uk www.inoxford.com

Restaurant Review:

The Rose Tree

Reviewed by Lucy Parr

10th April 2014

Nestled on the busy London Road in Headington, The Rose Tree is a modern Chinese restaurant serving a wide variety of Asian cuisine. My dining partner and I were greeted by owner Ting Ting on our arrival and shown quickly to our table. With a few other diners already seated there was a pleasant ambience amidst the modern, sophisticated décor, which sets it apart from your traditional Chinese establishment. The tinted front windows prevent outsiders from looking in but allow diners to view the bustling street outside which creates the illusion of a secret dining world. Upon receiving our menus I was overwhelmed by the huge array of dishes on offer which covered eleven pages! Far from being daunted we took our time to browse the delicious options while we snacked upon complimentary prawn crackers and sipped our drinks. With a huge variety of cuisine types from traditional Chinese dishes such as crispy duck pancakes and Dim Sum to Thai curries and Japanese Bento boxes, there is literally something for every palate. Should you find it difficult to decide between them all however the friendly staff are on-hand to offer suggestions based on your favourite flavours or you could opt from one of the carefully selected set menus from £18.95 per person. Eventually we opted for the Hors D'oeuvres Platter (£10.95) so we could sample a little of everything – and what a selection it was! The platter consisted of Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings, Spare Ribs in Capital Sauce, Skewered Chicken Satay and Vegetable Spring Rolls. With my allergy to peanuts they happily swapped out the satay skewers for some deep fried prawns instead. Every option was delicious with its own unique flavour and texture, as a sharer for two we felt the size of the platter could easily satisfy 3 or even 4 people and left us both feeling rather full! The main course didn’t disappoint either. My partner couldn’t resist the popular Chinese favourite of sweet & sour pork (£7.25) while I dived in for an adventurous King Prawn Chilli Pot (£14.95) and we shared a side order of Kai Lan (£6.50) a sort of Chinese broccoli. My hot pot came as a mini individual wok propped above a candle to keep the dish sizzling throughout and the intensity of the flavours was incredible. Already full from our rather large starter we struggled to finish everything but were able to take home the leftovers to enjoy the next day. We couldn’t resist finishing our sumptuous dining experience by trying out some cold Bubble tea (a Taiwanese favourite) and a pot of fruit tea. I thoroughly enjoyed our taste of the Orient culinary adventure and with so many more dishes to try a return visit is most definitely required. 81 London Road, Headington, Oxford, OX3 9AA Tel: 01865 741 888 Web: www.therosetreerestaurant.com www.inoxford.com

Isis Creative Framing Ltd

Reviewed by John Hobart

Wednesday 19th March

Framers are entrusted with memories. They are the safe-keeper of the most treasured moments; the confidant of joys and sadness; and the trusted artisan asked to enhance favourite images and artworks. All this because we only frame the photos, pictures and memories that matter the most to us. Set up in 1997 in East Oxford they moved to their current building on the Abingdon Road in 2002. Isis Creative Framing have a well deserved local and national reputation for quality and service that sees them steadily grow year on year. With seven employees they are small and part of the community, but their reach is national as they cut mounts and provide frames to other framers and organisations across the country. This success is in large part due to the philosophy of the MD, John Brooks. Here is a man who loves his work and that enthusiasm is palpable: “The thrill of the job is the trust of the customers and the variety of work we are given, from children's drawings and family photos to masterpieces and originals by the likes of Kandinsky, Picasso and Henry Moore. For customers to hand-over treasured possessions means that Isis need to combine exceptional craftsmanship with great customer service. On entering the shop you step into a quiet customer area brimming with frame and mount samples, divided by a slim desk from the hive of quiet activity that is the workshop. Customers are swiftly greeted then confidently guided through the processes and options for framing. At Isis these options are plentiful: stock frames, hand-made frames, frame restoration, colour matching; standard, box, block or float mounting in a wide range of colours; and plastic, standard, UV-filtering or museum quality glass, all from stock! For corporate customers Isis offer framing and distribution of certificates, for sports fans mounting of memorabilia, and for weddings montage boards and table plans. It’s all part of the service. To offer this diversity of framing options the framers themselves have to be craftsmen, being good with colours and very good with their hands. Across the team other skills are pooled including a knowledge of art and art history, and computer skills for managing the top-of-the-range computer-aided mount-cutters. These skills are clear in the quiet passion for framing within Isis, and with a business attitude that aims to always offer the right product at the right price it means Isis is the place in Oxford to go for framing. Open Monday to Friday 8.30 to 5.30 and Saturdays 9-5 on Northampton Rd off the Abingdon Rd. 2 Northampton Road, Oxford, OX1 4TG Tel: 01865 203420 / 01865 247625 Web: www.isiscreative.co.uk www.inoxford.com

Studio 8

Reviewed by Helen Brind

Saturday 29th March

Studio 8 is ideally located in an easy to find location in Kidlington. The premises offer a small number of onsite parking spaces which made life a lot easier based on the fact that I took my mother and my 3 year old daughter, Lilly. On arriving we were met by the lovely Hannah Mayling who immediately starting engaging with Lilly. Once cups of tea and a glass of milk had been supplied we were shown into the studio. The studio set is a great expanse of white, both on the walls and floor, with varying sizes of white boxes placed strategically for us to sit and lean on. The initial feel as we entered the studio was ever so warm and welcoming. Hannah was going over and above to ensure we had our every need catered too. We were made to feel very special. Hannah asked what I was looking for and we opted for an informal session, this immediately put my family at ease. Lilly had the opportunity to run, jump and generally mess about to her heart’s content with bouncy balls, hoola hoops and dare I say a skate board! From there on in the shoot was filled with lots of laughter. I almost forgot we were in front of the camera, we felt so at home our guards were immediately dropped and we ending up doing some really creative shots in front of the camera. The session lasted approximately 45 minutes and went really quickly. Probably too quickly for Lilly, who was most disgruntled that we had to leave. I’ve received the photos from Hannah and am very happy with the quality and range of shots she was able to capture in such a short space of time. I thought the difficult task would now be selecting a few that I would like to have framed. However, when Hannah sent the images through to me she also included a price list. I was amazed at how reasonable the prices were for such high quality photos. I now did not have to choose only a few photos as it was possible for me to have them all on disc. They really will create a focal point in my living room when I load them into my digital photo frame. I will be sure to recommend Studio 8 to all my friends and family.

Roots of Oxford

Review by Daria Montella

10th March 2014

The evening started at 10.30 pm. Rob and I, designer of Living In Oxford Magazine, left Oxford to meet Jim at the New Covent Garden Market in London. After a few adventures finding the right way, we arrived at the barriers a bit sleepy but very excited to start our night tour with Roots of Oxford. Loads of lorries were leaving the Market to deliver food around England and other delivery drivers were still loading their trucks with fresh fruit and vegetables. We followed Jim who was loading potatoes, Courgettes and other fresh products in the truck while Rob took pictures of the process to use for the brand-new Roots of Oxford website – COMING SOON!. We stopped for a quick energy-boosting coffee in the Market’s local bar before driving back to Oxford. At 3am we met Jim and the other guys at the Roots of Oxford base, just outside of central Oxford. They were carefully selecting the best products to deliver to their customers such as Oxford Colleges, Restaurants, Hotels, Pubs in Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties. We had the opportunity to visit the chiller. It was like entering a veggie and fruit paradise! The food was tempting, colourful and fresh. It took a lot of strength not to bite into the succulent apples or the red and juicy tomatoes stored in the boxes. Finally, we followed their electric, silent truck around to some of the Oxford Colleges, delivering the products to the kitchens ready for use by the chefs later in the morning. We met Tony Baughan, Head Chef of Wolfson College who commented: “I have been using Roots of Oxford for many years and I have always found them excellent to deal with. Excellent product knowledge and very helpful. I would recommend the company to anyone “. At 6am the lorry was almost empty and Jim was about to finish his shift. The sun was rising, the food delivered and Rob’s camera was full of amazing pictures of a memorable experience! We can definitely prove that Roots of Oxford deliver only local and fresh produce, every day! Thank you to Jim and to all at Roots of Oxford for a special night tour! The new website is currently in production so check back at www.rootsofoxford.com soon for a fresh look in May! Tel: 01865 792060 Web: www.rootsofoxford.com www.inoxford.com
