Welcome to Living in Oxford Last month we saw the 2015 Living in Oxford Magazine Oxfordshire Restaurant of the Year, The White Hart at Fyfield, crowned at Oxford Town Hall in front of 300 guests. Pictured on the cover are ecstatic owners, Kay and Mark Chandler celebrating their well deserved success. Thank you also to the amazing City of Oxford College staff and students who designed the delicious menu, cooked it, served it and even cleared the venue in a record breaking 15 minutes! We look forward to next year’s event at Weston Library – visit www. oxfordshirerestaurantawards.co.uk to enter your restaurant now. Read more about this year’s event inside. This month’s edition takes you around the county with some fantastic reviews – we get you lean and mean for Christmas with a visit to Spirt Health Club, get your teeth all sparkly for the festive party season and give you a breath of fresh air with a round of golf at Rye Hill. There are restaurant reviews with two of our favourite’s – The Bear and Ragged Staff and Browns; a great feature on Sarah Wiseman Gallery; a review of The Garden, one of Oxfordshire’s oldest established florists; and Strutt & Parker focus on Oxfordshire’s Housing Dilemma. Have a brilliant November. Richard Rosser Editor, Living In Oxford Magazine

Top Awards for the Best Restaurants in Oxfordshire
Main Sponsor
The winners of the 2015 Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards organised by The In Oxford Group, publishers of Living in Oxford Magazine, and sponsored by Hedges Law were announced at a glittering ceremony at Oxford Town Hall on the evening of 6 October. The overall 2015 Restaurant of the Year title was awarded to Kay and Mark Chandler at the White Hart, Fyfield, previously shortlisted for awards for the last three years. The couple have been at the historic fifteenth century inn for 10 years. Kay was delighted with their double win – they also received the top prize in the gastro pub/ bistro category, beating The Castle at Edgehill, The Quince Tree at Stonor and The White Horse at Kings Sutton. Kay said: “We are honoured and excited to receive this prestigious award. We genuinely love what we do and gaining this recognition makes all of the hard work and long hours we have put in worthwhile. We could not have achieved this accolade without the support and hard work of our fantastic team, who share our passion, dedication and enthusiasm. This is the hugest well done we could ever hope to receive!” The White Hart was voted top restaurant of the year by a team of judges chaired by Alain Desenclos, Ambassador for Belmond Le Manoir aux ’Quat’Saisons where he was restaurant director for more than three decades, and himself a previous winner of the Outstanding Contribution Award. Elvio Freitas and Mourad Ben Tekfa presented the Belmond Le Manoir Award for Excellence to The Mole Inn at Toot Balden. Helen Brind, Head of External Development and Partnership at the City of Oxford College (part of Activate Learning) was on the judging panel and led the team of 16 and 17 year-old college students who prepared and served the three-course gourmet dinner. The students are all studying BTEC and NVQs in public services, travel and tourism and hospitality and catering. Last year’s overall restaurant of the year winner, Shaun Dickens at The Boathouse, Henley-on-Thames was just pipped at the post by Restaurant 56 at Sudbury House Hotel, Faringdon for the county’s best gastronomic restaurant award ahead of The Kingham Plough. Oxford is one of the country’s most multi-cultural cities and two of the restaurants

shortlisted for Best Asian Restaurant are based in the city, Yeti Nepalese on the famously foodie Cowley Road, and Shanghai 30’s. They were joined in the shortlist by The Snooty Mehmaan in Faringdon. Yeti Nepalese won the top accolade. Best traditional pub was won by another White Hart - The White Hart at Minster Lovell, beating the Baskerville at Henley-on-Thames and The General Eliott, Oxford. The public vote, a hugely rewarding category to win, was presented to The Greyhound at Besselsleigh, and The Living in Oxford Magazine Editor’s Choice went to The Oxford Kitchen while Malmaison won best service. In one of the most hotly contested categories, Aston Pottery was presented with the prize for best Express/Deli/Café ahead of Café Aloha and Oxfork. The ethos behind the awards is not just to celebrate the best dining in Oxfordshire, but also to nurture new talent. To underline this, The City of Oxford College Trainee Award marks a huge boost of encouragement at the beginning of Amy Bulgin’s career. Amy is an apprentice working at the The Red Lion, Northmoor and the two runners up, James Kenny and Joshua O’Rourke at the Eyston Arms, Wantage. The Award of Distinction for his outstanding contribution to hospitality and catering was presented to Donald Sloan of Oxford Brookes University, founder and chair of Oxford Gastronomica. The beautifully crafted awards were designed by the National School of Furniture and the evening raised £3,500 for British Red Cross, the food supplied by Aldens, one of Oxfordshire’s oldest family owned businesses having been established in 1793 with wine supplied by Oxford Wine Company and champagne by Laurent-Perrier. Nikki Poole, Managing Director of Hedges Law, the headline sponsor said: “I can’t think that I’ve ever been to a more joyous awards ceremony. Whereas some business owners can be a touch blasé about winning awards, these awards clearly meant the world to our winners. Some of them have worked years to get this recognition and the delight was so visible on their faces. It was an absolute pleasure to have been part of such a wonderful event.” Next year there will be a new Award for sustainability, sponsored by Good Food Oxford. Nicola Benedetti & the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra Saturday 28th November: PROKOFIEV Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 63. ELGAR Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, ‘Enigma’ Nicola Benedetti violin Marios Papadopoulos conductor. Glinka’s sparkling overture to the five-act Ruslan and Ludmila sets the Cheltenham stage for violinist Nicola Benedetti, recently hailed ‘Scotland’s greatest musical export’ (The Telegraph). Here she performs a jewel from the Russian concerto repertory – Glazunov’s lyrically expressive Violin Concerto – laden with expansive melodies and an irrepressible finale. In Oxford, Benedetti and the Orchestra explore Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto – an indefinable musical fusion of soaring melodies, austerity and violinistic revelry. Elgar’s ‘Enigma’ Variations have become treasured among British audiences, with each movement showcasing the orchestral sections in a vivid characterisation of, in Elgar’s words, ‘my friends pictured within’. Supported by Geoffrey and Caroline de Jager. Tickets: £50 £35 £25 £15 (students from £5) Time: 7.30pm Venue: Sheldonian Theatre

Art Article:
New Website & New Paintings by Peter Kettle It is an exciting time at Sarah Wiseman Gallery, at the beginning of October we launched our stunning new website. It gives art lovers a brilliant opportunity to preview works by their favourite artists before visiting the gallery. The images are high resolution and quick to down load so you can have a great experience online, through the site you can also keep up to date with our exhibitions and gallery news. We have included an online shop on the site which is full of lovely hand-made ceramics, glass, printmaking, sculpture and small paintings, so if you are not able to make it to the gallery you can easily now purchase online. We hope you enjoy browsing at www.wisegal.com On the website we list the majority of the works we have in the gallery but we have to say nothing beats the experience of looking at art in real life and if you are in Summertown this November we have a real treat on show, a new collection of paintings by artist Peter Kettle. For Peter, the landscapes of Britain are the spur for his love of painting. The hostility of the wild and the peace of the water’s edge is a duality that Peter strives to capture in his work. In particular, the alchemy of light and landscape harnessed through mixed media and his unique application and technique is a quality that shines through in each of his paintings. Peter often broadens his palette to oil, acrylics, ink and clay, using a range of tools giving his paintings texture and energy. The majority of the larger work is done in the studio but Peter takes the canvases outside at many stages of the painting process where they are exposed to the changing weather conditions. Often the wind and rain whip across the canvas, creating unpredictable patterns; allowing nature to directly influence the work is an exciting process and allows the artist to work with the weather rather than against it. Peter studied art in Cardiff and is a member of Royal Cambrian Academy. The exhibition continues until 20th November.

Accommodation Review:
The Bear & Ragged Staff
Reviewed by James White 21st August
I have a real liking for country gastro pubs and hotels and so I was very happy to help Richard and the team at Living In Oxford with a review of The Bear & Ragged Staff in Cumnor. The hotel is on the edge of Oxford and set in lovely countryside and when we arrived at the property the supervisor made us feel very welcome and showed us up to our room which was very well equipped. We were offered help with our luggage and shown around the room and we particularly liked the fresh milk for tea and coffee and homemade biscuits that were provided. The room was spacious and well equipped with 100% cotton sheets on a good sized and very comfortable bed. A TV and media service was provided but we didn’t make use of this mainly due to a lack of time as our dinner was pre booked for 8pm. The rooms are comfortable and homely and provide everything that a traveller needs for a night away, including WiFi in every room. We came down to dinner and were not disappointed - A fantastic menu with some excellent dishes and great wines being offered at very reasonable prices. The restaurant boasts a AA Rosette Award for Culinary Excellence for good reason. We were tempted by the sharing boards but decided to opt for the mackerel and goats cheese tartlet to start and the lamb and duck for main course. The restaurant offered an excellent selection of wines and we were given plenty of recommendations by the team serving and I whole heartedly recommend the Malbec to go with the lamb! We also couldn’t help but order some of the onion rings after seeing them being served to someone else. Massive and delicious! The food was well cooked and well served and we were never rushed but always made to feel that we had someone on hand to help us if we needed anything. We finished our meals with a couple of glasses of desert wine to go alongside the Pannacotta which was a fitting finish to a lovely evening! All in all, we felt that the hotel and restaurant was a lovely place to come and have dinner whether for a family celebration or as a couple for a romantic evening out. Lovely food, great wine, excellent service and a calm, lovely environment in which to talk and catch up on the day’s events. It gets the thumbs up from us!

Restaurant Review:
I (STILL) HEART BROWNS!
Reviewed by Kelly Gavaghan 22nd August
Like myself, Browns was ‘born’ in 1973. We weren’t familiar in our formative years but by our late teens we had become very firm friends. Browns held a huge sophisticated appeal to me. Unpretentious classic décor, excellent but unstuffy service and a menu that boasted venison steak was enough for Browns and I to establish a satisfying and happy relationship for a number of years. Over time I confess I was seduced by flashy new contenders and before I knew it 20 years, YES! 20 years had slipped by before I revisited my old friend, Browns of Oxford. Scallops are a big favourite of mine and are easy to get wrong believe it or not. Browns however get it right. Pan seared and served with tempura cauliflower and puree, enhanced with the natural saltiness of the sea rosemary and dressed with a grape and shallot vinaigrette was a real mouth watering starter. My partner Richard started with the time honoured Prawn Cocktail that in our ‘children of the 70’s’ opinion should always precede a damn fine steak. Cool and crunchy lettuce topped with delicious plump prawns and tangy lobster infused cocktail sauce is a combination that should NEVER be messed with. We couldn’t resist the special of Cote de Boeuf for two. The supreme cut of rib eye served on the bone was bloody, succulent and artistically served on a platter with cherry tomatoes, seasonal greens and the crispiest, most delicious onion rings and chips. Little jugs of peppercorn and béarnaise sauce were little taste triumphs in themselves. This Ladies and Gents was a king of a dish. The cheese plate boasted a carefully chosen selection of the best of British offerings with artisan crackers, grapes and celery and served both of us easily. Washed down with a Port it was the perfect end to a perfect meal. Revisiting Browns of Oxford was just like it is when you haven’t seen a friend in a very long time but you pick up right where you left off. So much time has passed but fundamentally the things you like the most haven’t changed. I am delighted to report dear reader that yes, I still heart Browns - and probably always will.

Here at the practice we endeavour to create a relaxing and inviting environment, with a caring and friendly dental team who understand that our patients and their health are very important. We recognise that many people are nervous when visiting the dentist so we aim to have our practice be a pleasant and welcoming place at all times. We are now opening evenings and Saturdays to improve accessibility for our patients. Payment plans are available to help spread the cost of private dental care, giving everybody the access to quality dental treatment. Spirit Health Club
Reviewed by Richard Rosser September 2015
I couldn’t wait to get to Spirit Health Club after a week of hard work had left my back in need of some tlc – Deep Heat is great but there’s nothing like some human intervention to get me back to normal. Upon my arrival at the Spirit Health Club, based just off the A34 at the Pear Tree Roundabout next door to The Holiday Inn, I was greeted by very friendly staff who handed me a robe and a towel to prepare for my Enzymatic Sea Mud treatment which would provide me with the following: “Detoxify, exfoliate and nourish your body with a purifying seaweed and mineral mud mask sealed in a warm, relaxing wrap that delivers essential vitamins. Infused with aromatic botanical extracts and fruit enzymes, this treatment drenches the skin with moisture and provides ultimate radiance, vitality and an all over body glow.” One hour of pure heaven! The description didn’t do the treatment full justice – it was an incredible experience and I felt incredible afterwards. Spirit Health and Beauty is indeed a gem. The staff are very knowledgeable about the products they use and can offer a wide range of treatments. These include facials using Dermalogica products for men and women, body treatments such as Swedish massages, Indian head massage and sports massage for the energetic, body scrubs and sea mud treatments, Jessica manicures and pedicures, St Tropez Classic Tanning and various grooming or finishing touches such as eyebrow shaping, waxing etc… for men and women to name just a few. There’s not just the spa to enjoy at Spirit. Service Review:
Oxfordshire’s Housing Dilemma The telegraph recently ran an article entitled “Britain’s newest property problem child - and it’s no longer London. Rocketing house prices and not enough homes - welcome to the UK’s hottest housing market”. It was referring to our very own Oxford, and whilst it may be a little sensationalist, it cites values surging by £41,700 on average over the past year; £2,800 more than the rise in London over the same period. But why are house prices in Oxford growing faster than that of any other city in the UK? Quite simply it is a supply and demand issue – when supply is limited and there is high demand, the consequence is an augmentation of prices. It boils down to the under delivery of housing stock; short term economic conditions have had a knock on effect upon the industry’s ability to increase supply to meet demands and projected demands. It would be wrong to say that it is a UK-wide problem however, as demand is very much focused in specific areas, like we see in Oxford. The number of households is set to dramatically increase over the next twenty years, which will only succeed in fanning the fire even more. For the Planning and Development team at Strutt & Parker identifying suitable sites for residential development within Oxford and the surrounding towns and villages is core to our business. Whether be brownfield or greenfield we are eager to speak to landowners who believe that their land may have development potential. Oxford and its environs are constrained by the green belt and lack of space within sustainable locations, therefore developing any site requires expert knowledge and approach. Strutt & Parker’s Development & Planning department in Oxford has a team of experienced town planners and chartered surveyors, including valuers, who specialise in the development process from conception to completion. We are always interested to speak to landowners who have a potential development site or need any sort of planning advice so please contact the team if you require any assistance and one of the dedicated experts will be able to provide you with superlative advice. For details of how Strutt & Parker can assist in unlocking the potential of your property interests, please call a member of the team on 01865 366666.
