Lead Article:
Our Wedding Day at Westwood Hotel Winning the Living In Oxford / Westwood Hotel Wedding Competition took us completely by surprise. Overnight we went from loosely considering the options for our future big day, to suddenly being immersed in an intensive wedding organisation schedule. But my (now) husband and I have never been afraid of a bit of hard work, and love nothing more than to throw a good party. So along with a band of extraordinarily supportive friends and family we set about the task of organising a wedding in less than 80 days. Long nights handcrafting invitations, bunting and favours followed. Countless decisions were made about flowers, dresses, suits and food. Relatives spread across the globe were contacted and last minute travel arrangements were made. The list is endless, but the wonderful staff at the Westwood Hotel did everything they could to help and made the run-up to our special day as smooth as possible. When the big day finally arrived, we both prepared in our own separate ways. Dan started with a fry-up and a Turkish shave, while I was treated like royalty by the hair stylist, Katie-Jane Whitlock, and the make-up artist, Vanessa Wilson as part of the Westwood’s prize package. Then it was onto St Mary’s Church in East Hendred, travelling in style in a vintage Volkswagon Beetle (duck egg blue of course). As our guests headed over to the Westwood after the ceremony for welcome drinks and music from two very talented guitarists, we went up to the Downs with our extremely talented photographer, Simon Watson - once again courtesy of the Westwood. By the time we arrived back at the hotel, the sun had decided to make an appearance, providing a great photo opportunity in the Westwood’s beautiful gardens. After this we moved into the stunningly prepared dining room for a spectacular four course meal. After the speeches filled the room with equal measures of tears and laughter, the evening was kicked off with by a two-piece band, before the disco took over and the dance floor came alive! For us it was a truly magical day, and one we will never forget. The church service was beautiful, the reception venue was stunning, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was electric. We will never be able to thank our family, friends and everyone else involved enough for giving us such a memorable day. Mr & Mrs Gerhardi

Roots News
It's November already and our thoughts turn to Christmas and some wonderful dishes to cook for those lazy Sunday lunches in the lead up to the annual festivities. It really is a significant time of change with regards to fruit and vegetables and a great opportunity to have a refresh with some fabulous dishes that you can prepare all, of course, with fabulous Roots produce!
Available Seasonal Products
Jerusalem artichokes - This product is at its best during the month of November, a great source of iron during the upcoming winter months. Beetroot - The candy variety of this popular vegetable keeps its colour after roasting.
Kumquat - We like the look of these striking orange fruits, small but perfectly formed oval oranges. Pomegranate - One of the recent entrants as a highly nutritious superfood.
Pak choi – various names are used within the trade, however, we like to keep things simple: Bok Choi is impressive at the moment - smaller with a darker complexion than Pak Choi. Vac Pack chestnuts are readily available and we look forward to having the loose variety moving towards Christmas. Swede comes into its best around now, mashed swede with milk, butter and Black pepper. Simple and delicious. A lot of cabbage will be in season, as well as our local supply, we will be getting some fantastic UK grown produce as well. It is UK wild mushroom time, the difficulty with this is when they are gone they are gone. But the more positive news is they are delicious, so get them ordered early and we will do our very best to get them for you. Black truffles will be available this month for those with a luxurious dish or event to cater for. Tel: 01865 792060
Dates - a true statement of the fast approaching festive season. English Apples are available. In October we had some delicious Cox's and Spartans as a change from the more normal Granny and Delicious varieties. We can order these in for you, including the aforementioned. We also hope to be able to source Red Pippin's, Empire, Royal Gala, but there are loads of different varieties available from now until April/May time, so if you fancy an apple surprise, just give us a call and we will see what is available at the time you need them. Stealing the march on December a bit, but Cranberries are now available fresh and they are not only good for your Christmas turkey!! www.rootsofoxford.com

MOVERS AND SHAKERS... ‘It is with a heavy heart that we tell you that Rickie Griffin has left our rock steady crew. As you may know Rickie has been a great asset to our business and it is right that we publicly thank him for all his hard work. The travelling to and from London every day was adding far too much time to his work day, he is only a young un and they don't make ‘em like they used to! He is working back in Covent Garden Market with a supplier we have a very close relationship with and we wish him all the best of luck in the future, he will be missed.’ On a more positive note…… ‘We are very pleased to welcome Darren Bull into our little band of merry men and women. (Darren is a merry man for those not sure!) Darren's areas of responsibility will be account management working with Steve, marketing and commercial analysis working with Mike. Another produce warrior in the making, his main strengths are his organisational skills, his analytical mind and he does make a great cup of tea!’ PS. He does look ‘quite’ happy about it as well!!! At time of writing, we are reaching a few milestones on social Media, we are approaching 1,000 followers on Twitter and we are approaching (a rather embarrassing) 100 likes on Facebook. Do us a favour and give us a follow or a like. We will be very grateful… www.rootsofoxford.com

University of Oxford Shop
The University of Oxford Shop is ideally located on the High Street, in the heart of the Dreaming Spires of Oxford. Established in 1990, the shop is the University’s official retail store, specialising in a wide range of clothing and gifts bearing the University of Oxford crests. Situated opposite Brasenose College and St Mary’s Church on the High Street, the double fronted façade of the University of Oxford shop showcases colourful window displays, which entice you inside. The welcoming shop interior is wood panelled similar to that found in many colleges. The helpful staff are always on hand to give product advice or find the right size. The front of the shop features stationary and tableware, college enamel cufflinks and lapel pins, the latter making perfect gifts for those who have a favourite college and wish to show their allegiance or connection to it. The clothing section situated at the rear of the shop has a wide variety of ethically sourced clothing to suit all ages and tastes, including the traditional Oxford college scarves.
Official Clothing Range From T shirts and hoodies to polo shirts, rugby shirts and sweatshirts, the official clothing range is regularly updated in terms of styles and designs. For instance, this year the shop launched a new collection of children’s T shirts and Tops featuring a cute owl graphic as well rowing crew designs in bright primary and pastel colours.
Exclusive Designs The majority of items sold by the University of Oxford Shop are designed exclusively for them and where possible made in the UK or locally. Look out for the new Made in Oxfordshire section at the back of the store.

Top ten tips: How you can be a successful Franchisee 1: It’s all in the brand: Your success will be determined by your choice of brand and its location. Before deciding, investigate what your best options are. 2: Meet with your franchisor. It is vital to have a good relationship with your franchisor, so start off on the right foot. 3: Meet as many of your fellow franchisees as possible, and make sure you don’t just get to see the successful ones. You need a full understanding of the challenges of your chosen sector. 4: Be fully aware of the commitment you are making. This is your business and your future; to ensure your success you must have confidence in your brand, and passionately believe it is better that your competition. 5: Take advantage of the initial training your franchisor will provide on the fundamentals of your business, your success will rely on your experience and the quality of the staff you employ. 6: Remember: blood, sweat and tears! However strong your chosen brand is, your success will be down to your hard work and experience. 7: Talk to your franchisor, they are there to support you; your success is also their success. So ask for their help when you need it. 8: Don’t worry about the competition, but always be aware of what they are up to, so you don’t miss new opportunities. 9: Set realistic achievable targets for your business. A properly run franchise can be hugely rewarding and highly profitable, but is unlikely to make you millionaire overnight. 10: This is your business, you must make sure all your documentation is checked out by someone legally qualified to ensure the agreements you enter into are legally sound and will enhance your business rather than harm it. The benefits of ‘Hire vs Buy’
Oxford Event Hire is aware that the tough economic climate means that capital costs and spending decisions are coming under greater scrutiny. In this environment, hiring becomes a smart alternative to buying outright and whether you are a business or a private person, there is a serious proposition to consider. People are increasingly seeing the advantages of becoming more hire-conscious. We want to raise public awareness of the real economic and other gains that may accrue from questioning one’s purchasing decisions and opting to hire. The benefits of hiring they point to include: • No capital investment or capital replacement programme is required • Offers immediate availability to meet short-term needs • Eliminates storage requirements and downtime when equipment is not in use • No direct maintenance or transport costs – equipment can be delivered and collected from site • Vast ranges of high quality equipment available and updated by suppliers • Consumable items are supplied on sale or return basis, thus avoiding overstocks • Up-to-date safety advice and safety demonstrations are provided by suppliers There are also compelling environmental reasons for choosing to hire, bought equipment often languishes unused for long periods and is essentially wasteful in an era when resources are scarce and people are increasingly conscious of their carbon footprint. How many of us have bought DIY or other equipment and used it once or twice before it gets lost in the garage or garden shed? Hiring is often a better use of money and better for the environment, because hire equipment tends to be bettermaintained and will be used many times over during the course of its hire lifespan.
