Lead Article:
Chiltern Railways Groundbreaking Oxford to London line coming soon Chiltern Railways has a strong track record of delivering investmentled programmes and on Monday 26 October the company is launching a pioneering line between a brand new station, Oxford Parkway, and London. It is the first new rail link between the capital and a major British city for over 100 years and will bring significant social, economic and environmental benefits to those living and working along the route. The £130m investment will result in Chiltern running services between London Marylebone and a new station to the north of the city, Oxford Parkway, from 26 October 2015 and to the centre of Oxford from spring 2016. This work brings our total investment in the line to £600 million since the start of the franchise. The line is great news for those living in towns and villages to the north of Oxford, who will gain from improved rail access and a new parkway station. The new service will see two new fast trains per hour throughout the day between Oxford Parkway and Bicester Village station and London with journey times of under an hour to the capital. The fast growing town of Bicester will also benefit from an additional link to the capital. Following the announcement by the government that the town will be the latest garden city to be developed, this second fast link to London will allow easy access to this large and growing market, as well as improving connectivity for both domestic and international tourists visiting the popular Bicester Village outlet. The project will also see the re-establishment of long lost rail links, such as between High Wycombe and Oxford. In order to achieve this, a new ¾ mile line will be built at Bicester to link the London Marylebone to Birmingham Moor Street line with the existing route between Bicester Town and Oxford. Furthermore from spring 2016, it will be possible for business passengers to travel straight into the centre of Oxford with Chiltern Railways from London Marylebone. One of London’s most civilised rail terminals just 16 minutes from the City and under 10 minutes from Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus, Marylebone is conveniently located at the heart of the capital. The project is being delivered in partnership with Network Rail as part of the Bicester to Oxford Collaboration that will also see the installation of infrastructure for East West Rail line that will see trains running from Oxford to Bedford from 2017.

Barney Norris won the Critics’ Circle and Off West End Most Promising Playwright Awards for his last play, Visitors (‘Extraordinary’ The Guardian, ‘Heartbreaking’ New York Times), which played to sell-out audiences at The North Wall in 2014 transferring to the Bush Theatre. He has recently been appointed Martin Esslin Playwright in Residence at Keble College. Eventide reunites him with director Alice Hamilton in a powerful new production from Up In Arms. “Barney’s writing has detail, intelligence and humanity,” says Lucy Maycock, artistic director of The North Wall. “He’s interested in the lives of people in rural communities and how those communities are managing to thrive and survive. He has a terrific ear for truthfulness, and even when he’s critical of characters, he’s generous. You learn through feeling when you watch his plays.” Following the run of Visitors at the North Oxford theatre, Lucy invited Barney to mentor young writers as part of the North Wall’s Easter Writers’ Residency scheme in April 2015. Arcola Theatre’s Artistic Director Mehmet Ergen added, “I commissioned Barney to write this play after the huge success of Visitors at Arcola. Eventide is every bit as touching and enthralling, but funny and surprising too. We’re delighted to be working with Up In Arms, and with a first-rate cast, to bring the play to life. After the premiere at Arcola, and befitting a story about the vitality of local communities, we’ll be taking it right across the country.” Eventide will be performed at The North Wall Arts Centre in Summertown from Wednesday 28 – Saturday 31 October at 8pm daily. Music Article:
International Concert Season 2015-16 Music at Oxford’s 2015-16 season of world-class music making is now on sale, featuring some of the world’s greatest classical artists, as well as showcasing some of the most talented emerging young artists performing today. The season opens and closes with two unmissable piano recitals: Stephen Hough, a thoughtful, sensitive musician and polymath, and regarded by The Washington Post as ‘an intellectual, or even … a genius’; and the remarkable Yevgeny Sudbin, bringing a diverse programme of Scarlatti, Mussorgsky and Beethoven. Three more talented pianists are interspersed throughout the season: Clare Hammond presents a fascinating programme including Chopin and Rachmaninov; while Martin Roscoe and Charles Owen - both consummate artists in their own right - will perform with Tasmin Little and Nicholas Daniel respectively. Tasmin’s recital includes the highly virtuosic Kreutzer Sonata by Beethoven - do look out for their new Beethoven CD due out in early 2016. Nicholas’s recital uses Bach sonatas to frame achingly beautiful works by slightly lesser-known composers who have at times been undeservedly neglected. There is a tantalising selection of early music; including Tallis’ epic 40-part tour de force ‘Spem in Alium’, when The Cardinall’s Musick will be joined by the Choir of Christ Church. And if epic works in 40 parts excite you, then you are bound to want to hear the extraordinary motet by Striggio, sung by the supremely talented Merton College Choir and alumni. Do book early for the orchestral concerts: this year the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment returns under Sir Roger Norrington, and the Philharmonia Orchestra with Edward Gardner for a feast of Sibelius and Elgar. Remaining highlights include the virtuoso classical guitarist, Miloš, Verdi’s Requiem, and the much-anticipated concerts by the Villiers Quartet - the new recipients of the Radcliffe Chamber Music Residency. Do please support these talented young string players as they work with the Faculty of Music and Music at Oxford over the next three years! Tickets begin at £10, or just £5 for students and under 18s. Season and group discounts are also available. More information including artists’ video and audio clips are now available at www.musicatoxford.com

Josh Kline: Freedom Until - Sunday 18th October: This exhibition includes a compelling installation from which the exhibition takes its title. Four towering ‘Teletubbies’ dressed in SWAT gear guard a barren space modelled after Zuccotti Park. For Hope and Change, Kline presents US President Barack Obama, played by an actor augmented with facial substitution software, who delivers a confrontational new version of his inaugural speech, addressing issues ranging from global warming to race relations. In this darkly compelling new exhibition, Kline creates a radical critique of the political and economic landscape of a globalised world.

The welcoming shop interior is wood panelled similar to that found in many colleges. The helpful staff are always on hand to give product advice or find the right size. The front of the shop features stationary and tableware, college enamel cufflinks and lapel pins, the latter making perfect gifts for those who have a favourite college and wish to show their allegiance or connection to it. The clothing section situated at the rear of the shop has a wide variety of ethically sourced clothing to suit all ages and tastes, including the traditional Oxford college scarves. Official Clothing Range From T shirts and hoodies to polo shirts, rugby shirts and sweatshirts, the official clothing range is regularly updated in terms of styles and designs. This year soft pinks, aqua, pale blues and khaki are key on-trend colours that feature in the range as well as stripes and vintage style graphics. Exclusive Designs Owned by the University, the shop likes to commission items that have a direct link to Oxford. For instance: The multi coloured college stripe pattern inspired by the traditional striped scarves of each Oxford college, is very popular and features on a range of British made leather handbags and satchels by Zatchels. A striped silk scarf and a jolly tasselled wool version are also available. The fritillary collection of jewellery, cushions and handmade silver spoons, features the small delicate flower that blooms in Magdalen College meadow in Spring. Oxford’s famous architectural landmarks provide the theme for the popular Oxford Cityscape collection by UK artist Lizzie Prestt, including candy coloured plates, mugs, canvas bag, tea towel and coasters. In all, the shop is a treasure trove of beautiful and quality products, and unlike all other souvenir shops in Oxford, all profits are returned to and benefit the University. Once visited, if you wish you’d bought more, don’t despair, as the vast majority of items are also available online at: www.oushop.com.

Shopping Article:
The return of the comic shop It has been almost a decade since any specialised comic shop existed in Oxford. For comic book lovers that’s a decade of having to travel outside of Oxford, or resorting to reading or ordering online, when what we really want is a hub - a feeling of community - back again. That is exactly what Inky Fingers hopes to achieve. Inky Fingers opened just last month on 5th July and since then has welcomed all ages to browse their comics and sit in with a lovely cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. They stock all of the comic book staples, from Marvel (such as The Avengers) and DC (such as Batman), to lesser known ‘indie’ and self-published books, to Oxford’s very own weekly kid’s comic magazine The Phoenix. No matter what your tastes are you will find what you’re looking for here. For some strange reason there has always been a kind of taboo surrounding reading comics. Many people are of the opinion that once you ‘grow up’ you won’t have any interest in them anymore, and that the older folks who do read comics are somehow childish. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Do you love to read? Do you appreciate art? Why wouldn’t you enjoy the two combined, then? What Inky Fingers are hoping to show people is that comic books are not just ‘superhero’ stories - not just action for the sake of action - that there are as many comic book genres as there are book genres, from horror and crime thrillers to ‘slice of life’ and rom coms. If you’re on the fence about getting into comics, think of them as ‘books+’ and pop in to Inky Fingers to have a chat about your interests and let them recommend something to get you started. Inky Fingers also offer a subscription service for those series you want to keep up to date with as they’re released. Visit the website to see their full catalogue of comics.

Restaurant Review:
The Snooty Mehmaan The Snooty Mehmaan is known for its quality, service, comfort and value, with an emphasis on refined yet creative Indian cuisine. Maddy Barber writes of her experience there on a Summer’s eve. The Snooty Mehmaan near Faringdon, just half an hour from Oxford City Centre, offers refined Indian and Thai flavours in the scenic setting of the Oxfordshire countryside. This culinary gem also boasts a beautiful bar area and extensive take-away menu. Previously The Snooty Fox, the restaurant itself holds many of the original building’s strong architectural features including original oak beams and flooring, giving The Snooty Mehmaan its strong and natural environment that amplifies both the mood and the creative food on offer. The rich combination of spices wafting from the kitchen, courtesy of awardwinning Chef Aysan Shaikh, was tantalising even from outside, tempting us inside the modern looking bar and through to the dining area with its striking original oak beams and flooring. We sampled both the Thai and Indian cuisine on offer and were impressed by the high standards. To start, my guest had the Soft Shell Crab with Mango, Sweet Chill and peanuts dotted through for added crunch. The refreshing mango and pokey chilli made this light enough that he was left wanting more, especially as complex aromas from the kitchen still hung in the air. My starter was a classic Sheek Kebab with a citrus dip, a lightly seasoned and mouth-watering opener. Our main courses were an extremely generous portion of Nua Lao Dang; a Thai stir-fry dish of strips of beef with mixed peppers in a tangy, sweet sauce served with noodles, and a side order of seasoned Pak Choi, and Snooty Beef; a delightful combination of beef and butternut squash in a spicy tomato sauce, with aromatic Lemon Rice. The meat in both dishes was of an impressively high standard, the beef in particular was deliciously tender. Despite perusing the wide-ranging selection of cooling ice-creams and sorbets on offer, we felt unable to do credit to any of the desserts, replete as we were with our perfectly spiced and hearty main dishes (my partner was unable to finish his portion – potentially a first!). The presentation in which the curry was served, along with the Thai and Indian music, were small but noteworthy touches that made the evening particularly enjoyable. With such friendly staff, quick service and exotic flavours, we are eager to return for the fixed price buffet on offer every Sunday. WH Mobile Valeting
Reviewed by Richard Rosser 10th September
There are two things you can guarantee having purchased a new car. Firstly, it’s going to depreciate, that’s a given. Secondly, it’s never going to be that clean again. Let Living in Oxford Magazine introduce WH Valeting to help keep your car showroom clean and go some way to ensuring your car doesn’t depreciate quite as quickly as it could. Based in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, WH Valeting provide mobile car valeting and cleaning services. Owner Wayne Hedger has had more than 15 years experience in the business of valeting having joined BMW from school aged 17. “I’ve always cleaned cars, it’s my passion.” Explained Wayne. “I get a lot of satisfaction out of cleaning cars and have a growing number of satisfied customers.” Counting a host of celebrities in his growing portfolio of regular customers, Wayne and his nephew Kyle have built up an excellent private client base with a growing commercial list of regulars. “We can work anywhere, mainly private residences, but we are now starting to get more commercial customers asking us to clean their fleets which is great for us as it’s possibly just one stop for the whole day, meaning we can get more cars cleaned without travelling as much.” Cleaning all sorts of vehicles including classic, modern, motor homes and caravans, Wayne’s mobile valeting service has built up a solid reputation over the five years he has been in business. “I’m delighted with how the business has evolved and would like to expand it further. I have extremely high standards so if someone else is going to work with me, they have to do the job as I would. Kyle is learning and has been with me since he started cleaning cars so he’s learning from me without developing bad habits.” With full valets starting at £80 and mini valets £35, it’s a small price to pay to ensure your car is sparkling and your clients impressed. WH Valeting also offer patio and driveway cleaning with results of the highest professional standards guaranteed to impress. “We use water pressure only so there’s no need for harmful chemicals. We also re- sand and seal to keep your patio or driveway looking its best for longer and to stop future staining. We also pressure clean walls, decking and garden furniture.” Car and patio cleaning is provided from Wayne’s fully mobile business – he even carries his own water in a 600 litre tank, sufficient for 12 cars, plus a generator to give the high pressure required for all jobs. Living in Oxford Magazine can highly recommend WH Valeting. Four hours after Wayne and Kyle arrived at the office, they left with the interview in the bag and two immaculately clean cars. Thank you both!

Service Review:
H.I.M Reviewed by Ed Rosser 15th September
You’re always guaranteed a friendly welcome at H.I.M. in St Clements and having Alison and the girls cut and style my hair for as long as I can remember, I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else. My dad started taking me to see Alison when she used to work in Headington but nine years ago she set up her own salon and has never looked back. Having established H.I.M. in March 2006, Alison cemented H.I.M. as a popular choice with students and residents of Oxford. Located just a short walk from Cowley and the City Centre, H.I.M. is perfect in many ways. Cutting my dad’s hair isn’t necessarily much of a test, but as an 18 year old who likes to trial new styles and Alison and the team are more than happy to help me out – I’ve even made it on to their wall where they have different styles on display for their customers to gain inspiration. Right now I’m into a bun and visit relatively frequently to keep it styled and sharp. Despite what seems to be another barbers opening every day in Oxford somewhere, Alison still keeps a healthy number of customers coming back for more and I often pass by with queues of gents waiting patiently – I can hardly say the same for the other barbers in the area! It never ceases to amaze me how many customers pop their head in and, seeing the queues, tell Alison and the girls ‘they’ll be back later’. It’s a real mix also with businessmen, students and even tourists coming through the red door. The team are young and friendly with many years experience in the trade. Alison explains, “We focus on our clients as individuals and deliver a high quality service at a reasonable price. New customers are always welcome. “It’s hard to believe that the business has been going for 9 years now and we now have 4 members of staff – myself and 3 other girls. We offer student discount incentives as well as a loyalty card, which offers as much as £3 off their 4th cut. The schemes are running well and the student discounts have been very successful. “Customers like the relaxed atmosphere at H.I.M. Also we listen to them, and give them exactly what they what, not what we think they want. I’d say we pride ourselves on that, we really do listen to them. We’re happy to offer advice too! “I’ve always been eager to work. I’ve now got 18 years of hairdressing experience, so when the opportunity came up to start my own hairdressers I felt I was ready to do it, I’d learnt enough. I’m really happy with the shop’s progress and growth so far. Hopefully in the future, I’ll be able to open another shop, maybe in the next 5 years or so, but it’s just a question of staff and the right location coming up.” If you have more technical enquiries, pop in to talk to Alison and she can also talk you through the colouring services that H.I.M. offer. With a range of styling products from FUDGE©, make H.I.M. your next stop for a great haircut.
