Welcome to Living In Oxford
October already – can you believe it?! We have a packed Living in Oxford for you this month. We have news from Chiltern Railways about their exciting new plans for Oxfordshire rail commuters, cutting journey times to the capital and much more. There are also some great reviews for you this month. We feature thrills and spills at Oxford Castle Unlocked and read about the world renowned artist and social activist, Ai Weiwei, who exhibits at Blenheim. We go outside of Oxford and review Oakley Court in Windsor, the home of Hammer Films (for those of you old enough to remember the 80’s horror films) and also Browns in Windsor, a fabulous setting for a wonderful restaurant. Back in Oxford, we feature Turl Street Kitchen in the centre of town and The Feathers in Woodstock. Finally, don’t forget to keep an eye on the www.inoxford.com site with news of the launch of our Awards on 1st October and your chance to vote for your favourites. Enjoy October

Investing in the Future In less than a year Chiltern Railways will start running services between Oxford Parkway and London Marylebone. Living in Oxford takes a look at this ground-breaking £130 million project which will see Chiltern running services from a new station to the north of the city and, in Spring 2016, Chiltern will start a service from the existing Oxford station. The rail link is the first new line between a major British city and London for over one hundred years. It will mean a new era for businesses in Oxfordshire with the new line set to bring economic prosperity and a multitude of opportunities for the region. Oxford Parkway is the long awaited flagship station at the heart of the new rail line. It will be a bright, airy station, a multi-modal interchange, linking trains, buses, cars and bikes, designed to allow passengers to avoid the congestion of central Oxford. But the new line won’t just link Oxford with London; for the first time in 50 years, the city will have a direct link to High Wycombe. It will also provide the added benefit of a direct link to Wembley Stadium and Arena making it easier than ever to attend sporting and music events. Oxfordshire residents will also experience faster journey times as they will be able to avoid the centre of London. The rail – bus interchange will also be a huge benefit and will provide ease of access to nearby places like London Oxford Airport in Kidlington and Blenheim Palace in Woodstock. Chiltern’s Managing Director, Rob Brighouse, commented that Chiltern are “staunch believers of the contribution rail travel can make to economic growth and prosperity. This is the latest in a series of significant railway investments made by Chiltern Railways since the start of our franchise and will benefit thousands of commuters and businesses in Oxfordshire and also Buckinghamshire.” Working in partnership with Network Rail and the Department of Transport, the new lines will transform the way commuters get in to Oxford, as Rob continues. “The other thing we are doing which is important for Oxfordshire is rather than just run a Chiltern line that runs into Oxford we have also specified it so that it’s the first part of the East West railway, so by building this line we are starting the East West project, in effect, so the work can carry on to the east of Bicester through to Bletchley, Milton Keynes and ultimately Bedford and Cambridge. “The railway we are building is a two track 100mph railway compatible with electrification. The track that we have taken up was a single line with a 20 mph speed limit in places, so it’s a radically different service.” The company are currently consulting on the Oxford Parkway to London Marylebone timetable which can be found on their website where you can keep up to date with the exciting developments for all of us.

Attraction Article:
Spine chilling thrills for Oxford Castle visitors Ghost Fest returns to Oxford Castle Unlocked this October and November, delivering a spine-chilling selection of events as the attraction stakes its claim as the spookiest festival in the UK calendar and the place to be this Halloween. • Maintaining its Ghost Fest roots, Friday and Saturday nights throughout the month will be filled with ghost hunts, vigils and paranormal experiments around the haunted site. • After a hugely popular introduction in 2013, Terror Tuesdays returns with the castle prison transformed into Oxford’s ONLY scare attraction. Terror Tuesdays will stand out among all other Halloween events as the most hardcore and intense fright night experience. The event will be held every Tuesday in October and November between 7pm and 9pm. • Oxford Castle Unlocked has teamed up with restaurants in Oxford Castle Quarter once again to offer a sinister journey inside the haunted heart of the former Royal residence and prison, rounded off with a sumptuous three course meal. The After Dark Dinners will take place every Thursday evening (excluding 30th October) throughout the festival. • Visitors can try out the gripping Robbers Revenge Murder Mystery on 15th October and 19th November when the famously sinister convicts will keep guests on their toes as they work their way through the dark arches and winding corridors of the Castle. • Families should prepare for a ghoulishly gory Halloween half term exploring execution, using the castle’s millennia of history as their guide. From 25th October to 2nd November, discover the crimes that justified the penalty and meet the executioner whose job it was to carry out the deadly deed. • A ghoulish line-up of inmates will be locked up in the old cells of Oxford’s former prison this Halloween. From 6pm to 8pm, on Saturday 25, Friday 31 October and Saturday 1 November, children are being invited to don their Halloween costumes and dare to knock on the doors of the creepy inhabitants for a scarily good treat – safe in the hands of the attraction’s resident tour guides who will make sure the experience is one to remember! Trick or Treating costs £5 per person. Haunting its way through history, Oxford Castle Unlocked is recognised as one of the spookiest buildings in Britain. The 1000-year-old castle, which was also used as a place of incarceration for over 800 years, offers 50minute guided tours with a costumed character from the castle’s history, exploring the Saxon stone-built St. George’s Tower, the atmospheric crypt, the preserved prison wing and the archaic man-made mound offering breath-taking views of Oxford.

Attraction Article:
Ai Weiwei at Blenheim Palace On 1st October 2014, world renowned artist and social activist Ai Weiwei will be launching his biggest UK exhibition to date here at Blenheim Palace, as part of the Blenheim Art Foundation. The exhibition will showcase more than 50 artworks by Ai Weiwei produced over the last 30 years and will feature early photography dating to Ai’s time spent in New York in the 1980s through to new site-specific works conceived in China especially for the Palace. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience first-hand the breadth of the artist’s practice. Ai Weiwei at Blenheim Palace is the first major contemporary art exhibition to be presented in a building that dates back to 1704, and will integrate artworks throughout the richly furnished Palace rooms, as well as in the Park and Formal Gardens. The exhibition will showcase the work of an artist known for his decisive breaking of tradition and will invite visitors to consider the Ai’s particular vision, which questions what it is that we call ‘contemporary’. Seminal artworks on display will include ‘Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads: Gold’ (2010), Ai Weiwei’s reinterpretation of the legendary bronze zodiac head statues that once surrounded the fountain-clock at Emperor Yuanming Yuan’s Beijing imperial retreat and ‘He Xie’ (2010), featuring 2300 small porcelain crabs presented in the Red Drawing Room. The show will feature 55 photographs by Ai Weiwei documenting his time spent in New York 1983-1993 alongside ‘Marble Surveillance Camera’ (2010), ‘Slanted Table’ (1997), a reconfigured Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) table; and ‘Map of China’, (2009) formed from wood reclaimed from temples also dating to the Qing Dynasty. As the inaugural exhibition of the Blenheim Art Foundation, Ai Weiwei at Blenheim Palace marks a new programme of contemporary art, which will see exhibitions presented at the Palace by internationally acclaimed contemporary artists.

Accommodation Review:
Oakley Court
Reviewed by Richard Rosser Wednesday 4th June
The Oakley Court in Windsor sits amid thirty seven acres of immaculately chiselled gardens and lovingly manicured lawns. There is even a private stretch of the River Thames running past the hotel, so no wonder it is a sought after venue for weddings, celebrations, conferences or short breaks. A short drive to the heart of Windsor, The Oakley Court is the perfect venue for two, a corporate group or, as we discovered, a reunion for four school friends. I was late, as usual, and when I arrived on warm spring evening, the other boys were already enjoying a drink or two in the hotel bar. I made a quick dash to my room overlooking the lawns for a shower and change before playing catch-up as we waited for our cab into Windsor. The Hotel provided an excellent base for our 24 reunion, perfectly based for the other boys who had taken a car from London and less than 40 minutes from my office in Oxford. As the spring sun burst through this majestic building, excited guests arrived for a wedding, presumably taking place the next day, and families with giggling children enjoyed a pre dinner walk on the lawn. With the Thames at the end of the lawn, it really was a heartwarming site, full of run and laughter. Meanwhile, back in the bar, it looked as if we were set for the night before we were advised that our cab had arrived. We were eating at Browns in Windsor centre, just a short drive away, but ended back in the hotel bar after an eventful night out for a nightcap and, for some reason, a tray of sandwiches – who ordered them, nobody knows. Hopefully they weren’t intended for the wedding party! I certainly enjoyed a long and comfortable night’s sleep and made my way to the restaurant for breakfast, not knowing where the others were. But they had beaten me to it, tucking into a royal English Breakfast with all the trimmings. Playing catch up with this lot was becoming something of a theme! It’s a shame we didn’t get to experience the hotel’s stunning facilities, including meeting rooms for up to 500 guests (you can even land your helicopter there – worth knowing!), the seven acre Oakley Court Field for team building activities such as quad biking and clay pigeon shooting. There’s also a croquet lawn, snooker room and the full facilities of the Oakleaf leisure club, including an indoor swimming pool and gymnasium and beauty treatments. Within the grounds there is also a par 3, 9 hole golf course, ideal for both beginners and more experienced players. Within the secluded walled garden there are 2 tennis courts that have recently been re-surfaced and upgraded in partnership with Wilson. Racquets can be hired from the club. With regards to food and drink, Oakley Court Hotel is a stunning venue for a private dinner or celebration for anything up to 180 people within the hotel, or more within a marquee in the walled garden and grounds. Throughout the hotel, special historic features such as ornamental ceilings, wood-panelled floors and sash windows, and of course the backdrop of manicured lawns and the meandering river create a stunning dining setting. Take some time out and enjoy the lounge menu and afternoon teas, or perhaps a beverage from the wide selection available in the stylish and comfortable bar. Whatever you do, make sure you take time to enjoy this fantastic hotel. Windsor Rd, Water Oakley, Windsor SL4 5UR Tel: 01753 609988 Web: www.oakleycourt.co.uk www.inoxford.com

Restaurant Review:
Turl Street Kitchen
Reviewed by John Hobart 2nd September
Despite being only three years old Turl Street Kitchen has the feel of an Oxford institution. Somehow it balances contemporary, trendy, and being very Oxford, without playing to stereotypes. Located in the city centre TSK attracts a diverse crowd from students quietly working over breakfast to families enjoying lunch or dinner. When we visited on a Tuesday evening the main restaurant was half full and the smaller lounge area, where there are sofas and a fire in the winter, was fully occupied with people studying books, laptops and board games. The restaurant itself is dressed with reclaimed wooden tables and chairs with a stripped wooden floor and a changing display of local artwork on the walls (by an Oxford student when I visited). Contemporary background music and excellent lighting top-off the relaxed feel. As part of a social enterprise to support student and community volunteering, TSK has a local focus. This carries through to daily menus which reflect what is in season and in the local cooperative garden, so you are guaranteed it is fresh and you’ll feel good about your food miles! The menu itself is delightfully straightforward with four starters, five mains and two desert options – Including two vegetarian options for each. There is even a set menu with two courses for £14.50 or three for £18. For dinner we chose goose breast and salt & pepper squid as starters, and meatballs and Cornish plaice for mains. All were excellent and in generous portions! The squid was noteworthy for being delicately cooked and perfectly complimented by a light aioli and lemon mayonnaise. The main courses lived up to expectations with the plaice falling off the bone while the pork and chilli meatballs with white beans were rich and flavourful. After such good mains we shared a nectarine and lemon fool with homemade shortbread for desert, all served in a glass jar - perhaps a little kitsch, and definitely exceptionally tasty! The meal was topped off with a superb coffee! As a stickler for service I was not disappointed, our waiter Tom was attentive, gave us time when we needed it and responded quickly when required, answering or pre-empting all our questions. Turl Street Kitchen is an independent restaurant which is undeniably comfortable with itself. It knows why it is there and what its customers want, and provides it was ease and assurance from breakfast to dinner! 16 Turl St, Oxford OX1 3DH Tel: 01865 264171 Web: www.turlstreetkitchen.co.uk www.inoxford.com

Restaurant Review:
The Feathers
Reviewed by Ian Francis Saturday 13th September
We visited The Feathers on a Saturday lunchtime, simply because we were unable to secure an evening booking due to the popularity of this restaurant. Loved by locals and visitors alike the Feathers is much more than a hotel restaurant. A 17th century townhouse hotel, nestled in the pretty market town of Woodstock, it also offers a wonderful selection of over 200 gins earning a place in the Guinness Book of Records, a fabulous outside summer terrace and an intimate restaurant offering an exceptional fine dining experience. The menu was a mixture of classic dishes with some contemporary touches and definite French culinary influences including the delicious salted cod brandade which has it's origins in southern French gastronomy in the 18th century. The dishes were complex and thoughtful, each requiring individual time and attention. The wine list was extensive, offering wines from the old and the new worlds. Presented in classic format with an extensive range of French wines this menu offered the expected whites grapes of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay and reds of Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon but also the unexpected Grenache and Viognier to supplement this already superb selection of wines. With the help of our host we enjoyed and New-Zealand Sauvignon, an Italian Pinot Grigio and a delicious full bodied Merlot. We started our gastronomique lunchtime experience with an Amuse Bouche, offering a glimpse into the chef's approach and a taste of what was to come. It was a combination of scallops, a squash purĂŠe, code roe and pickled carrots - amazing! For starters we chose a classic cream of tomato soup with a delicious mozzarella and basil mousse over which the soup was poured, and a goat's cheese cannelloni, texture of beetroots, tarragon oil. The combination of smooth ricotta cheese and beetroot was superb and the cannelloni provided just enough texture. Our main courses included a mouth-watering pan roasted duck breast, crispy leg, peas, grilled baby gem and roast peach and the herb crusted cod, cocoa beans, fennel, artichokes and salted cod brandade. The combination of duck with roasted peach was a match made in heaven and the salted cod brandade was superb. The desserts were quite simply delicious, exquisitely presented and complemented with a glass of chilled Australian Orange Muscat. The food was a work of artistic creativity, the combination of flavours, the textures and colours and the presentation of the food was stunning and most definitely the best food we have eaten in a very long time. Our host, Restaurant Manager Antonio, explained 'everyone here is a VIP' and we certainly felt that way. We will definitely be returning. 16-20 Market St, Woodstock, OX20 1SX 01993 812291 www.feathers.co.uk www.inoxford.com
