We’ve got a great edition of In Oxford for you this month. One of our favourite restaurants, La Cucina, is featured on our cover and you can read some glowing testimonials from some very happy customers. You can also buy one of our fantastic Vouch vouchers for La Cucina at www.vouchoffers.co.uk. We also have a review on the Carol Peace exhibition at The Wiseman Gallery in March – simply stunning artwork which I know from personal experience make for excellent presents for Mrs Ed! Zoe has also put together a great feature on Woodstock and managed a fabulous stay at The Feathers (lucky thing) which she tells us all about in the feature, which focuses on some of Woodstock’s treasures, not forgetting the wonderful Blenheim Palace and this year’s schedule of events. Lead Article

We would normally write a review for our restaurants but on this occasion we thought it would be nice for you to hear from a selection of La Cucina’s customers about why they think La Cucina is so special. “AUTHENTIC ITALIAN!! Try the specials!! Do book for evenings!” I love La Cucina, I love everything about this restaurant!! It's great for parties or for a long night with your friends. I wouldn't go there for a quiet, romanitc meal on a Saturday night, because it is buzzing and busy, but if you get a good table, that doesn't matter too much. I have been there many, many times and I usually have a special. Last time I had ravioli with truffle oil - absolutely gorgeous and reasonably priced. “good rustic food” lovely rustic restaurant in an interesting part of oxford...slightly off the tourist track. We have been a number of times and the food is always spot-on. “One of our favourites” We consider ourselves very lucky to have moved closer to some of Oxford's best restaurants and I certainly count La Cucina amongst them. Dining again last night was another chance for a shining example of a great restaurant ticking all the right boxes. The food is unbelievably fresh and the open-plan kitchen a welcome addition for any foodies that enjoy watching their food being created for them! Puddings are good - I'm a massive fan of the desert wine that comes with some little almond biscuits for dipping and R likes the apple tart. Of course if you've had a starter you probably won't need a pudding, but La Cucina is one of those restaurants where the food is so good, it would be rude not to over-indulge! “Best independent italian restaurant in Oxford!” I walked past La Cucina many times without paying much attention, and recently found out I've overlooked an Italian jewel! The little independent restaurant looks lovely inside, and you can buy many Italian products in there, but the best thing about it is obviously the food! We had an utterly delicious flatbread with sardines on it, and I chose a goat's cheese and roasted vegetables salad - massive portion and though it's a classic it did not taste boring at all! I'll definitely be heading to La Cucina again. "Great family run Italian restaurant” A visit to La Cucina is like a trip to Italy - there's always a great 'buzz'. Clientele is mixed - old, young (some very young) - family groups, couples - all sorts. The place is warm & friendly - staff charming - food varied & of a good standard. I am so pleased to have it on my doorstep! We have lived in Oxford for five years now and, however many restaurants we try, La Cucina remains top of the list. It has all the ingredients, literally. A friendly welcome, a varied menu with interesting specials, gorgeous Italian food and staff who really seem to care that you have a lovely meal (charming to adults, attentive to children and willing/able to cater for different dietary needs such as gluten free). You can even learn Italian in the toilets! We think it's great. “Great Service” Fast service. You can see what goes on in the kitchen, even for a very busy night, the kitchen never faltered. 40 St Clement's St Oxford OX4 1AB Tel: 01865 793811 Web: www.lacucinaoxford.co.uk

24 Hours in Woodstock Our lovelly Customer Liaison Manager Zoe Kemp takes an in depth trip around the historic town of Woodstock and learns that great things come in small packages. Having relocated to Oxfordshire from Kent only four months ago, I had yet to experience the market town of Woodstock and to discover the charm of the home of Blenheim Palace. When I arrived in Woodstock, it was as I had been promised – picturesque and idyllic. With ample parking available, I left the car outside The Feathers where I would be staying for the night. I was greeted with a warm welcome which set a precedent for the businesses that I visited during my stay. My evening spent at The Feathers, experiencing the gin collection and the delights of the award winning restaurant (winners of the 2012 Oxfordshire Restaurant of the Year) was faultless and time flew by far too quickly (See The Feathers review on page X).

purchase of a day pass. What better place to visit in the summer with a picnic? As I walked back down Park Street I was passed by the local school walking past. The children skipped and talked amongst themselves whilst on their way to school and there was visibly a sense of community. The history of Woodstock is proudly displayed by the use of plaques on significant buildings including, amongst

We enjoyed our meal probably too much as we were the last to leave the restaurant. We decided to experience the evening atmosphere of Woodstock, taking in a couple of the local pubs – what a choice! For a Wednesday evening, the pubs were surprisingly busy. The regulars certainly made us very welcome! The bell for last orders rang and we ventured back down Market Street returning to the comforts of our luxury hotel.

others, the home of Simon Hateley Coleridge, the famous author of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, at 6 & 8 High Street.

After a refreshing night’s sleep and a hearty cooked breakfast at The Feathers, I strolled up to Blenheim Palace and battled the strong winter wind for the opportunity to view the stunning gardens of Blenheim Palace. Some scenes literally take your breath away and Blenheim Palace is right up there! I plan to revisit the Palace soon and make the most of the 12 months free entry following the

Whilst admiring the unique shops and art galleries that Woodstock has to offer, I realised that Woodstock has all the modern conveniences a resident or visitor might need yet the character of the town has not been compromised. There really is something for everyone from the contemporary crafts and colourful ceramics available at the Junction Art Gallery to the hand made gifts and

crafter’s dream that is Marshmallow. The home is very well catered for in Woodstock and The Real Wood Furniture Company has 14 showrooms displaying the range of individually crafted pieces both traditional and contemporary.

With free parking available throughout Woodstock and a regular bus service stopping at Oxford Street, Woodstock is the perfect retreat from a hectic life with the convenience of being a stones throw away from the centre of Oxford. My expectations were set high prior to my visit due to the positive reviews I had heard about the town. Not only were my expectations met, they were exceeded. I concluded my visit to Woodstock by returning to The Feathers to thanks my hosts for a wonderful stay, to Peter, The Feathers Hotel General Manager, for his hospitality and for being the host for an amazing 24 hours in a town that can only be described as a hidden gem. Don’t just take my word for it, visit Woodstock and experience all that the town has to offer for yourself. I will be sure to visit again soon.

I was told to be sure I paid a visit to the Oxfordshire Museum during my time in Woodstock. The museum houses a labyrinth of rooms, each one themed and displaying a range of relics and providing wealth of information relating to the exhibition. Many of the exhibitions include interactive features, a big hit with the school children on a trip to the museum. Every shop that I visited welcomed me with a warm smile and a cheerful ‘hello’ it’s often the smaller details that leave a lasting impression. Fiona at Chica Ho welcomed me into her clothes shop where there was an array of both luxury chic items and everyday items, all reasonably priced. Woodstock retail therapy really is a relaxing experience away from the crowds and with over fifteen eateries in Woodstock, you are never far from a nice cup of tea and a cake.

Finally, on behalf of the In Oxford team, I would like to thank Anne Stabler of Wake up to Woodstock for her continued support for the In Oxford Magazine Woodstock Feature. For further information on Wake up to Woodstock please visit: www.wakeuptowoodstock.com.

Woodstock Feature

After a busy day at the office, I arrived at The Feathers and parked with ease right outside. With the roar of an open log fire along with the warm welcome from the staff, I felt at home in an instant. The staff were only too happy to provide me with a tour of the hotel and an insight into the history of the hotel. Recently refurbished, the combination of modern and eye catching furnishings are sympathetic to the history of the building yet provide a unique grandeur. Originally believed to be four 17th Century cottages with the later addition of a shop premises, The Feathers certainly has character. The décor of the rooms and suites plays on the fact that each room is unique due to the character of the building, no two rooms will have the déjà vu of many chain hotels. I was directed to one of the suites available at The Feathers. The furnishings and ambiance of the room was elegant and of the highest quality. When I was told this would be my room for the night I was astonished, excited and overjoyed all at the same time. I had never been treated to such luxury before and tried to remain professional as my inner child jumped for joy as if it was Christmas morning! My partner and I spent the evening in luxury as we sampled some of The Feathers’ many gins, having the world record for the highest number of commercially owned gins, there were plenty to choose from. I explained that I had a sweet tooth and was recommended gin and cranberry juice which was very refreshing and went down too easily - good job I had just the one! Being awarded as the Winner of the Best Restaurant and the Best Gastronomic Restaurant at the 2012 Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards, I knew we were going to be in for a treat when we moved to the dining room for our long awaited evening meal. The staff were on hand to provide their recommendations and a description of each dish. We ordered the Creedy Carver Duck, Longhorn Beef and Tasting of Valrhona Chocolate. With each course that arrived we received a complimentary dish from the chef, every one a piece of art - it seemed a shame to ruin them but they were just too tasty! After one of the best nights sleep I have ever had in a hotel, I felt refreshed, relaxed and ready to explore Woodstock. For guests staying in Woodstock on business, the dining area of the suite we stayed in doubled up as a conference table with all the required facilities seating up to 8. The Feathers restaurant can also be booked as a conference facility catering for a maximum of 54 guests. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff and the incredible experience they provided during our time at The Feathers. They were welcoming to the extent that we felt like family friends, not hotel guests! I have already recommended The Feathers to my friends and family when they come and visit from Kent. With first class dining, unique conference facilities, mesmeric hotel rooms and suites, whether your stay is for work, pleasure or you’re just popping in for afternoon tea, The Feathers has to be on your wish list. Female Gothic Friday 15th - Saturday 16th March: In the darkness between life and death, a lone, haunted woman tells chilling tales of the macabre and terrifying. The Victorian fascination with tales of mystery and the supernatural created an enduring legacy of Gothic fiction; but many thrilling and eerie stories from the great female writers of that era have gathered dust and been forgotten. Until now. Adapted and performed by Rebecca Vaughan, Female Gothic is directed by Olivier Award-winner Guy Masterson (Under Milk Wood and Shylock).

Fences Monday 25th - Saturday 30th March: Following his triumphant performance as Othello in the West End and in The Comedy of Errors for the National Theatre, Lenny Henry takes on one of the 20th century’s most exceptional characters. Troy Maxson was once a gifted athlete but denied his turn at the big time he now struggles through daily life, taking out his anger on a sports-obsessed son and his loyal wife.

Me, Myself and Mrs Gibbs Monday 25th - Tuesday 26th March: In 2003, Francesca bought a second hand postcard for 50p. Addressed to a Miss L Gibbs, the message on the back simply reads: ‘Be Careful Tomorrow. A.C.’ Part detective noir, part personal biography, Francesca investigates the message on a postcard sent 100 years ago and becomes obsessed by the life of the woman who received it. What happens when she starts tracing a history that isn’t her own? And why did Miss Gibbs have to be careful tomorrow?

Rome, Open City Friday 15th March: A personal favourite of Hans Josephsohn, Roberto Rossellini’s Rome, Open City (Roma, città aperta) was selected by the team at Kesselhaus Josephsohn. A landmark 1940s film it is an astonishing drama about the Nazi occupation of Rome and the brave few who struggled against it. Conceived and directed amid the ruin of World War II, its documentary-style look and multi-layered narrative captured the unforgiving realities of the time. This seminal work garnered awards around the globe and represented the beginning of the Neorealism film movement. Dir. Roberto Rossellini, 1945, Italy, 100 mins, Black and White. Tickets: £3

Annie Newnham: Life & Lino Tuesday 26th March - Saturday 20th April: Annie Newnham sees the human body as every artist’s starting point – her own with oils, where she is well known. The Artifical Standard Friday 8th - Friday 29th March: ‘Scientists always marvel at nature, at how it seems to be the grand code, with an inbuilt sense of purpose. Discoveries are made which reveal more and more that things are related, connected. Everything appears to be aware of itself and everything else, all fitting into an interlocking whole. Carol Peace ‘Present’ An exhibition of Sculpture, Painting and Drawings 2nd -30th March 2013 Sarah Wiseman Gallery is delighted to be exhibiting a new exhibition by Carol Peace, one of the UK’s most exciting talents in contemporary sculpture. Renowned for her distinctive figurative sculpture, Bristol-based artist Carol Peace’s work inhabits an inner world of self-reflection, or intimate connections between characters or figures, communicating unspoken understandings between ourselves, our loved ones and the world around us. Some of her sculptures are only a few inches tall; but resonate with immense power, probably because we recognise much of ourselves in her sculptures. ‘My inspiration is from everyday life occurrences, feelings, the way people behave and react towards one another’ she explains. ‘I realised recently that my feelings, aspirations and desires are in fact the same as everyone’s and that it is in fact themselves that they relate to in my work and therefore it is I guess ok to be personal.’ Carol Peace is an artist whose work would not be in existence without drawing; her dedication to drawing is her work’s distinguishing feature. It is an integral part of the making process in her sculpture and will feature in the exhibition. Drawing well takes concentration and hours of practice and many artists feel it doesn’t always go well, but Carol embraces these challenges; ‘Drawing has always fed my work. It’s not direct; I don’t draw someone then sculpt them. I draw, and the humanness seeps in. It’s difficult so of course you have to approach it humbly. I am a secret painter. I paint direct from life. Sculpture is more about ideas whereas for me painting and drawing is the pure but never simple act of looking and recording.’ ‘This show is about a recently recurring theme, ‘The Present’ she says. ‘It is a gift to see what you already have and to appreciate the now. I am ambitious…but there is a danger of not living in the present, of regretting the past and always looking to the future, but life is about today…about being here, now.’ Carol Peace studied at Winchester College of Art graduating in Fine Art Sculpture, before taking up a place at The Princes Drawing School in London. She then went on to found The Bristol Drawing School in 2007, where she was artistic director for four years. She is now a patron of the Royal West of England Academy. Carol has also created a number of public art commissions with permanent sculptures installed in locations around the U.K, and has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. 40-41 S Parade Oxford OX2 7JL 01865 515123
