Lead Article:

Rocky revs his engine ahead of Oxford performances THE perfect man met the perfect machine in Oxford earlier this year when the aesthically pleasing Rocky met the equally beautiful MINI. Dominic Andersen, who plays the eponymous role in The Rocky Horror Show, which comes to the New Theatre Oxford for Christmas, visited the metrology lab at MINI plant Oxford, in Cowley. This is where engineers work to perfect their iconic cars using a range of the latest technology, including ‘Pruefcubes‘ - aluminium full body master structures of the MINI and the perfect representation of the car’s shell. He said: “Well nobody's perfect, but Oxford's MINI plant comes pretty close with all the research and hard work it puts into its machines. Rather like the hard work I put in at the gym to achieve the body of Rocky Horror.” The world’s favourite Rock N‘ Roll musical, runs at the New Theatre Oxford from December 13 – 31. It tells the story of Brad and his fiancée Janet, two squeaky clean college kids who meet Dr Frank N Furter by chance when their car breaks down outside his house whilst on their way to visit their former college professor. It is an adventure they’ll never forget, with fun, frolics, frocks, and frivolity, bursting with timeless songs and outrageous outfits. Directed by Christopher Luscombe, the Rocky Horror Show is a guaranteed party, which famously combines science-fiction, horror, comedy and music and encourages audience participation meaning, of course, getting dressed in your most outrageous fancy dress. This musical extravaganza features all of its famous musical classics including Science Fiction/Double Feature, Dammit Janet and of course, the timeless floor-filler, The TimeWarp. Tickets can be purchased from the New Theatre box office on George Street, by ringing 0844 871 3020 or by visiting our website at www. atgtickets.com/oxford (phone and internet bookings subject to booking/ transaction fee. Calls are charged at 7p per minute, plus your phone company's access charge.). For bookings of 10 or more, or for Equal Access bookings, please call our dedicated in-house team on 0844 871 3040. Event Article:

Oxford Christmas Market The Oxford Christmas Market was established in 2009 by Nicole Rahimi of NiRa Events.

The first Oxford Christmas Market was brought to life at Oxford Castle, showcasing 30 stalls and a small Victorian carousel. Traders were offering their wares and local choirs added to the festive atmosphere. The weekends went well and lots of visitors came to the market, but numbers dwindled during the week. Over the next two years, Nicole Rahimi stepped up her marketing efforts and expanded the market. However, after three years she was forced to realize that the location was just not right.

Therefore, Nicole Rahimi tried to gain permission for prominent Broad Street, right in the heart of Oxford. The authorities finally granted permission for December 2013.

The Oxford Christmas Market has now seen three very successful years in Broad Street and grown to 57 stalls.

With the sound of choirs singing Christmas carols, market traders offering unusual and handmade gifts, colourful decorations brightening wooden stalls and the aroma of mulled wine and cinnamon drifting in the air - a visit to the Oxford Christmas Market is a truly magical Christmas experience. It has become a Christmas tradition for locals and visitors from further afield alike.

NiRa Events hopes to expand the market further and make it one of the most beautiful in the country.

Restaurant Review:

The Bull on Bell Street, Henley

Reviewed by Matt Wright 8th October

“Lively, Informal, Classy” Not my words I’ll admit, but those of Simon, the proprietor when asked to sum up The Bull on Bell Street in three words. Let’s investigate…… Lively: It was certainly bustling when we stopped by for lunch, general chatter overlaid with the more mellow soundtrack of a live pianist playing old jazz classics by the bar. The perfect backdrop to an autumnal Sunday afternoon. Live music is a real feature here, taking place all over the weekend, with bands on Fridays, a DJ on Saturdays, and pianists on Sundays, hence something to suit all tastes. And talking of tastes, judging by the squeals of delight from the family tables, the stone-cooked pizzas were a huge hit with the kids, this obviously being a great hit with families. Informal: Don’t be fooled into thinking The Bull is all uber-posh though. A quick glance at the extensive website will tell you that the building is over 700 years old and synonymous with Henley’s brewing tradition, ever since a certain Mr. William Henry Brakspear began brewing from a back garden a few doors down in 1711. That legacy lives on today, with The Bull proudly boasting its own microbrewery, the big copper mash tun visible through the rear glass window, just past the bar area. If you’re interested in beer and happen along at the right time, you can grab a quick tour with Malcolm, previously of Wychwood Brewery in Witney. As for the tasting, well, Malcolm might indulge you if you’re lucky, but if not, at least 2 ales are always served at the bar, one of which – Goldfinger – raises money for the Sue Ryder Hospice, just up the road in Nettlebed. So, drinking is good for your conscience! It’s not all uber-pub either though - The Bull is a mixture of rooms, extending back from the black-timbered frontage to a long, elegant conservatory dining area, (is it an ‘Orangery’ in these parts?!), with more intimate plush booths, a family dining area, and not to mention the cool piano bar area. Classy: All these rooms are also decorated with their own little touches and colour schemes, be it rowing memorabilia or modern artwork, meaning that it flows as a whole but with flashes of individual identity – I think ‘shabby chic’ might be the official interior designer term? When it came to dining, the wine list had some interesting choices including a White Rioja (not seen very often round these parts), and I must mention the halloumi fries (yes, I was sceptical, but no squeaks here) and salt & pepper squid from the Starter Menu. For Mains, we tackled a weighty Sunday Roast Sharing plate, boasting pork, chicken, and beef, which almost finished us off pre-dessert….but not quite; a succulent chocolate brownie then did the trick. So, yes, ‘Elegant, Informal, Classy’, The Bull on Bell Street certainly ticks all the boxes. 57-59 Bell Street, Henley-On-Thames, RG9 2BA E-mail: book@bullonbell.co.uk Tel: 01491 576 554 Web: www.bullonbell.co.uk www.livinginoxford.com

Maintain your best Employees with a Share Scheme Economically successful locations across the globe are witnessing an influx of rich people purchasing property. Oxford is typical of this trend as property prices have appreciated so much in recent years that they now stand at 16 times the average salary. It means the city is now rated as the most expensive place to live in the UK. The result is that home ownership has become increasingly difficult for many in the workforce, thereby forcing them further out to live. This has led to the rise of the commuter and all the associated travel issues that come with it. Inevitably, the transferral of skills and spending money out of cities will in the medium term lead to improved infrastructure and thus more business opportunities in rural and suburban locations. How long before your key staff consider local jobs as financially viable careers with an associated improvement in lifestyle? This potential trend is a big concern for business owners because your employees are ultimately your greatest asset. Thankfully there are various initiatives that can be implemented to help you keep hold of your best people: 1. Enterprise Management Incentives (EMI): An EMI is a tax efficient scheme used by growing companies, although not all businesses will qualify for it. The way an EMI share scheme works is your employees are granted the option to purchase shares and become shareholders in the business with conditions that will motivate and retain them for the long term. 2. Employee Shareholder Shares: ESS works by allowing companies to offer a new form of employment status which is linked to a tax efficient share scheme. It can be applied to both new and existing employees. Under an ESS, employees receive at least £2,000 worth of new shares but give up some of their statutory employment rights in exchange for this ownership. 3. Share Incentive Plans: SIP’s are used to encourage employees at all levels to gain shares in the company they’re employed by. Since the start of the 2016/17 tax years, employees can be offered up to £3,600 of free shares under a SIP and these aren’t subject to income tax and National Insurance. Based on this overview, you may already have a preference for a particular employee share scheme. Before implementing anything you should remember that these schemes contain specific tax regulations. Choose the wrong scheme and you might end up with a significant tax problem while also potentially upsetting your employees – the very people this was supposed to help. Give Wellers a call regarding the specific details of these options and your business needs, before deciding on any course of action. 8 King Edward Street, Oxford, OX1 4HL Tel: 01865 723 131 Web: www.wellersaccountants.co.uk www.livinginoxford.com
