November In Oxford Welcome to November in Oxford
Once again we’ve got a bumper issue for you this month. We have some excellent reviews and interviews for you in this issue, including Anna Hobson’s interview with Miss Oxford, Alice Christian, who is targeting success in the December Miss Great Britain contest, with which we wish her every success. We have a South American feel about our Restaurant Reviews this month, with burrito favourite Mission Mexican under the spotlight and also our third annual review of Las Iguanas. The rest of the team at In Oxford also spent one Friday lunchtime – I’m sure it spilled over to about 4pm – at Oxy Oriental. Once again, I was surplus to requirements and I was surprised they didn’t ask me to write the review, having feasted for what seemed like hours! They must have enjoyed themselves as Jenny proclaimed we should make it a weekly ‘tradition’! Anna also enjoyed the decadent surroundings of Oxford’s most exciting new club, Roppongi in George Street. If you would like to enjoy Roppongi yourself, check out The Shop @ In Oxford which has a seriously fantastic deal to tempt you in! For just £100 get access with five friends to the VIP area, plus a bottle of Dom Perignon Champagne and a bottle of Grey Goose Vodka, plus mixers – worth £300! Hurry, these will be gone in a flash! Tracy Hoy breaks into a sweat to review Esporta in North Oxford, with reviews on the tennis and spa facilities to come in future issues. So get stuck in to October in Oxford, but don’t forget www.inoxford.com has more listings, more reviews and some great offers to take advantage of at our Shop @ In Oxford. If Tracy has given you the incentive to try Esporta, why not be brave and buy a one-off monthly membership at half price through the Shop. Go on – get fit for Christmas! You’ll feel less guilty! Oxford Town Hall is a jewel at the heart of the city and more than just a government building. It is a centre for the community of Oxford and a resource for the whole city. This autumn the Town Hall has opened up its doors more than ever. Delight in the splendour of this stunning building on one of our new weekly tours. The 30 minute tour delves into the building’s history and includes a peek into rooms and the 14th Century crypt housing some of the City’s treasures. The variety of other public spaces within the building offer a feast of art, our café when you need to take a load off your feet, an active Gallery, City Plate display and the adjoining Museum of Oxford. We’re confident you will enjoy the experience. Over the last year Oxford Town Hall has developed a strong community focus and we encourage the general public to cross the threshold to take part in the events and activities that are held in this magnificent building. Entering our 2010 concert season we have no less than 14 scheduled classical, carol, folk and popular concerts from October to December and we continue to headline big new acts such as Imelda May. But concerts, exhibitions and festivals are just one part of the cultural activities at the Town Hall and our thriving programme of events also includes dance classes from ballroom to salsa, lunchtime organ recitals and family fun days. And Christmas will be better than ever this year. Starting from Light Night on 26th November our Winter highlights include Santa’s Grotto for the children and for the adults why not book for one of our shared party nights or even organise your own exclusive Christmas party. As well as attending events at the Town Hall this impressive Victorian listed building with its grand ceilings, wood panelled walls and stained glass windows is a multifunctional venue available for hire for business meetings, private parties, public events and its historic setting has also made it a popular wedding venue within Oxfordshire. For a detailed list of our upcoming events see our website. Tickets for concerts can be purchased through our box office on the number below. If you would like to organise your own community event, art exhibition or hire the venue for a private function please contact our bookings office. Shopping Review
The Casa Rose "experience" started life in June 2004, with a small gift shop on Walton Street in the heart of Jericho. Inspired by "old hollywood" chic and from her time living in Spain. Proprietor Rose Lyburn wanted to bring the relaxed Spanish feel into Walton Street. "I loved the atmosphere, the products and the whole experience of shopping in small, friendly boutiques. Anyone who has visited Paris will realise the same feeling there too. Individual, unique boutiques, layed back, friendly informal service...european lifestyle ! “Our focus is a lot more on gifts, accessories, smaller pick-up pieces, so customers can come in and they don’t have to focus on fashion. It’s a very ‘feel good’ sort of shop, it’s a very uplifting shop and allows you to escape real life…..which can be very nice!” Rose ensures that her customers not only get value for money, but excellent quality. “Whether it’s gifts, fashion, simple little basics, and cashmere-mix cardigans, I always focus on quality. I want my customers to feel beautiful in my wonderful silk, cotton and natural product clothes. I try to make sure that the products enhance shape and make you feel good. We also have a lot of accessories, beautiful silk scarves and other items to complement your outfit.” Casa Rose has also undergone a recent shop front facelift, which Rose is delighted with. “We’ve gone for a flamingo pink and cream so it gives it a really vibrant, new look and this helps me to really put our stamp on things and enhances the brand which has been evolving since we opened.” Rose’s long-awaited new website is also launching which she is very excited about. “We have an e-commerce section which we hope will be really successful. I’m also a ‘Twitterer’ which is fun and will, I am sure, help us. We have also recently teamed up with Marie Claire and are proud to be one of their ‘Hot Spots’ in the magazine.” Times are changing fashion-wise and Rose is well aware of what today’s customer needs. “Customers want a more personal service as opposed to the High Street. They are being a bit more cautious but what they want is service, the feel-good factor when they’re buying, and they want to go in and just buy smaller items at a better price that will cheer up their day! That’s what I feel we can offer. Our following is growing every day - we’re at the 2,000 customers mark now. I’m very appreciative of my loyal customers, because, without those loyal customers where would we be?” Makiko, Rose’s ‘right-hand man’ is also a key part of Rose’s success. “Without Makiko, well…… I don’t know where I’d be. She’s almost equivalent to being my husband! She has been here four years now and is a complete rock to me in the business, in my life, and in a lot of decisions that I make. We’re reaching out to new customers to come and find us because it really is a little hidden gem that’s just outside the heart of Oxford. We are a great team and we have something for everyone.“ Reviewed By Richard Rosser Casa Rose Boudoir 74a Walton Street Oxford OX2 6EA Tel: 01865 510191 Web: www.casaroseoxford.com Twitter: www.twitter.com/casaroseboudoir

In Oxford interview Alice Christian Alice Christian was recently awarded the title of Miss Oxfordshire, a fitting appellation for such a delightful, attractive and stylish young woman. Earlier this year, her sister encouraged her to apply, and after competing with many other contestants Alice walked away with the crown. The regional competition, which has been running for 65 years, involved individual interviews with the judges, an evening gown catwalk, and answering questions on stage. Winners of the regional events are automatically put forward for the Miss Great Britain contest which takes place in December. From an early age, Alice was involved in the performing arts, attending courses at the Met Film School, the American Academy of Performing Arts and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, before completing her degree in Fine Art at the University of Leeds. After graduating, she went travelling and saw productions that inspired her to pursue acting and performing as a career. To date, Alice has appeared in short films, advertisements and music videos, as well as doing some commercial modelling. Alice has thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this year’s event, and would never have believed that she would be on her way to the Miss Great Britain final. She enjoys having the title of Miss Oxfordshire, and appreciates the opportunities that have opened up for her. Charity events are particularly important, recently posing as Miss October in the Breast Cancer Campaign fundraising calendar, dressed as Sophia Lauren for the 1950s pin-up theme. Alice relishes the opportunity to use her title for positive endeavours knowing this is a once in a lifetime opportunity giving her new experiences and friendships along the way. What sets Alice apart from the other competitors is her passionate patriotism, and she would be proud to travel the world as Miss Great Britain, a long-standing and prestigious award. Recently taken over by Liz Fuller, Alice believes the competition has once more been brought to life. As well as opening up the entry criteria to include divorcees and single mums with no constraints on physical appearance, the beauty pageant is also going back to its roots. The climate has shifted from the stereotypical view of old: the competition allows women to shine as individuals. Alice is still aware of the prejudice towards the competitors, but is proud to participate in a classy event focusing on ambition, career, talent and education, as well as presenting oneself well. So, with 2 months to go until the final event, Alice is looking for her lucky break that will help her fulfil her dream of becoming a successful actress. Her advice to anyone thinking of entering a beauty pageant is to just go for it: the judges know that beauty radiates from within. Purchase the 1950's pin-up calendar: www.marcellopozzetti.co.uk. Vote for Alice: text MISS OXFORDSHIRE to 81118; call 09012 937 937 quoting number 43; visit www.missgreatbritain.co.uk. Her personal website is www.alicechristian.com.

Health Review OXFORDSHIRE health & racquets club by
Situated in the heart of Oxford but hidden away within the wonderful grounds of St Edwards School is the Esporta Health Club, part of the Esporta chain with over thirty clubs around the UK. Esporta in Oxford really does offer you everything, whether you are looking for a Health club to just “get fit”, socialise, relax, unwind or help relieve everyday stresses of life, this club really does offer it all in a lovely fun environment that is hard to beat! Esporta is just off the Woodstock Road, with a large car park and as soon as you arrive, you feel a sense of belonging, you are not just entering a health club but a sociable place where meeting friends is as important as getting fit and feeling good. The club has recently undergone a major refurbishment updating and improving all areas of the club, so it is now a very modern and welcoming club to visit. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted with the smell of freshly brewed Costa coffee & delicious pastries in the Cafe Bar, but there is a huge variety of food and beverage to choose from including a lovely selection of wines, ‘smoothies’ and fresh juices to suit all your needs. Esporta offers lots of facilities on site, firstly, there are extensive changing rooms with individual wooden lockers, complete with hairdryers and separate changing areas, offering plenty of space and privacy with lots of hot water to shower all day long. There are two main swimming pool areas, the inside pool, more discretely lit and relaxing hosts a sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and plenty of lanes for swimming whether you want to relax or burn off those extra calories plus a little children’s splash area for the toddlers. There is an outdoor pool which is fantastic in the summer, lots of lounge chairs to unwind and soak up the rays and is a lovely place to be on those hot English sunny days and as the pool is heated, it’s warm all year round. Esporta also offers the Rackets club membership which includes four indoor tennis courts plus many outside and squash courts, so no need to join a separate club if you are a keen racket player. There is also a children’s crèche area specialising from babies up to five years old which is open every day, a beauty salon, hair salon, physio therapists, sunbeds, toning tables, and of course the amazing gym which also has three separate studios dedicated to group classes and activities. The vast range of studio classes means there is something for everyone, of all ages and of all abilities and currently Esporta offer in excess of ninety-three classes every week. So whether you want to just join a really fun friendly health club or transform your body and get really fit, Esporta is the place to be, it will certainly never be boring! Inside: Mission Mexican Grill Oxy Oriental Roppongi Las Iguanas
Restaurant Review
Hidden in a side street of the High Street lies the Nirvana of Mexican healthy fast food. If you are a big fan of good, fresh food and not afraid of big portions, then The Mission Mexican Grill is the place to go! Either opt for a takeaway if you are in a hurry, or just to sit in the window and watch the world go by The menu offers a huge range of burritos, fajitas, tacos and salads. But for a true ‘Mission Experience’ , you can compose your own ideal burrito just by choosing your favourite salsa, beans and fillings, such as chicken, vegetarian, steak or pork. I would recommend the ‘Carnitas Buritto’. This is a large flour tortilla filled with black beans, sour cream, rice, salsa and ‘carnitas’. Carnitas is slow roasted pork that has been seasoned with fresh bay leaves, orange zest and thyme. The meat is then cooked until it ‘falls apart’. Ask the waiter for extra cheese and guacamole if you are feeling extravagant!. And of course, there is nothing better than a nice, cool Mexican beer to finish the dish off. Don’t worry if you’re not a big fan of spicy food. The Mission has three levels of salsas to go with the dishes, the next hotter than the last. But don’t worry, you can taste each one before you cover your food! My preference was for the mild Pico de Gallo, which means ‘Roosters Beak’. Legend has it that the name refers to the spiciness or, in my language, ‘pain’ that you would feel if the rooster were to peck your tong! This salsa consists of diced tomato, chopped onion and spicy Serrano peppers, finished off with refreshing lemon juice. The founders of the Mission found their inspiration to open their first outlet after visiting the Mission District in San Francisco, California. This is the home of musician Carlos Santana and is famous for its burritos. Nothing but fresh ingredients are used when preparing the dishes, as in the Californian version The combination of light wood and cayenne pepper coloured walls gives you the authentic Mexican feeling. This restaurant is ideal for anyone who appreciates great value for money – isn’t that all of us!?. Moreover, the restaurant tries and succeeds to be environmental friendly. The Mission offers great food for incredible prices. Make sure you ‘build your own’ to get the real benefit of a visit to The Mission. Mexican food has never tasted as good! Restaurant Review
Oxy Oriental in the Ozone Leisure Park is not one of your usual eating places. What sets it apart is the way the restaurant manager greets you at the doorstep and escorts you to your table. As soon as one enters, they can’t be stopped being awed by the lovely, colorful and spirited ambiance which compliments this modern and stylish eatery. As you approach the buffet area, you are greeted with a beautifully presented oriental spread ranging from Sushi, and other traditional dishes together with a wide selection of Teppan-Yaki dishes where you get to choose the raw ingredients and the chef cooks it before you in a flash – literally! The Oxy Oriental Buffet/ Banquet offers a wide range of scrumptious delicacies where you can refill your plate to your heart’s content. The polite and courteous staff are well informed about the menu and they are always around, encouraging you to try their mouth watering Brazilian Roast selection. The dishes are constantly being replenished to meet demand, so it’s always hot! In case you still have room to polish off some dessert, then you have a difficult choice to make with traditional puds and the mouth-watering soft ice creams to keep the kids happy. The Oxy Oriental also boasts a wide selection of drinks to complement all palettes and tastes. If you’re in a hurry, why not try Oxy’s fast and efficient take away service. To top it all, the Loyalty Cards with various discounts keep you coming back for more. Located just three miles from the City Centre, the free parking makes this the perfect venue in more ways than one. A quick buffet lunch costs £5.90 and £6.90 on a Sunday and an evening meal with friends is £12.50 or £13.50 on Friday and Saturday, and large parties can cater for up to 180. Night Club Review
Roppongi lounge and club opened earlier this year and is a stylish, classy bar conveniently located on the popular George Street in the heart of the city. The name is derived from an area in Japan known for housing the rich and famous, and this is the tone that the manager is aiming for. Complete with red carpet and glowing lights, the door leads down sparkling stairs into the small but attractive club. The walls are decorated with mosaic mirrors that glitter in the lights, and the furniture is a tasteful glass, chrome and leather, with slate flooring. The VIP area is a secluded and luxurious space, sectioned off with draping threads, and on each table is a stylish drinks cooler perfect for that bottle of champagne that must be enjoyed in such upmarket surroundings. The professional staff are friendly and welcoming, ensuring you feel relaxed and catered for. There is an extensive selection of drinks, including classic cocktails, non-alcoholic cocktails, wine, bottled beer and champagne. There is also a small selection of bar snacks for very reasonable prices. Special offers include ‘after work drinks’ at reduced prices between 5:30 until 8:30. Roppongi’s ‘signature hours’ offer reduced price drinks between 8:30 and 11pm, including cocktails, champagne and shots. Premier DJs play classic dance, current pop and house music, perfect for dancing or simply setting the scene whilst you socialise. The dance floor is a modest size and although there isn’t much seating throughout the club and it can get quite crowded, the great atmosphere and contemporary music creates a cool vibe. Although some of the details were lacking, for example the toilet facilities and finishing touches to the décor were noticeably disappointing, Roppongi has undoubtedly started to shake off the reputation left by their predecessors. Guest appearances from Calum Best, some of the cast form Hollyoaks and other celebrities are a regular occurrence at Roppongi, adding to the glitzy and glamorous feel of this unique place. Make sure you keep an eye out for events hosted by the rich and famous. Fantastic reservation packages are available, ranging from silver to platinum, each offering waitress service, free entry for a limited number of guests and a selection of drinks, guaranteeing an evening of VIP treatment, whatever you are celebrating. Check out the website for more details. Roppongi is open 7 nights a week, 5:30pm until late during the week and until 3am Fridays and Saturdays. It attracts a discerning audience of young professionals and those who appreciate the finer things in life. This stylish and contemporary lounge bar is a must for anyone who wants a modern club with likeminded people, without the undertones of excess apparent in so many other venues. Restaurant Review This is our third annual and much awaited review of Las Iguanas, the kids’ favourite by a mile. So much so, that word has spread amongst their friends and this year Ed bought Felix and Abi and Elena joined forces to go head to head with the boys. Seated in one of the huge circular tables in the heart of the restaurant, the table was soon covered in two for one non alcoholic Citrus and Raspberry Coolers, curly fries and the odd Gin and Tonic. Abi and Elena were tempted by the four fat whole prawns, split and cooked in a garlic, lemonade and chili sauce, served with bread to start with whilst Ed, for the third year running, devoured the nachos with chili con carne. Felix tried to snatch the odd nacho whilst Ed wasn’t paying attention! Tina and I shared ‘Pato Taquito’, shredded roast duck and caramelised onion rolled in a flour tortilla, char-grilled & served with sticky chili jam. Delicious. For mains, I went for the chicken fajitas, which were fantastic as usual, whilst Abi chose the chili braised in spiced tomatoes, served with garlicky rice, warmed soft tortillas, soured cream and corn tortilla chips. Elena was slightly more adventurous and went for the flame-grilled rump steak, and Felix just wanted ‘any steak he could have’! He had the South American sirloin ‘aged for at least twenty one days’, apparently. Tina had the ‘Ensopado de Carne’, a tender, slow-braised goat in coconut milk and tomatoes with chilies, carrot and cassava, served with coriander rice, farofa and sweet plantain. The mummy said it was ‘yummy’! I know, a cheap line! Another round of two for one non alcoholic cocktails brought the glass count to about 126 on the table, but they were enjoying it, so why spoil their fun! But that’s the great thing about Las Iguanas. It’s great fun, great food in a lively environment. We were in on a Sunday evening at 6pm, quite often a slow time for restaurants, but Las Iguanas was almost full, which is a great sign for any restaurant. Las Iguanas, located on Park End Street, less than half a mile from Oxford Castle and the very centre of Oxford, has secured itself a reputation for great food, excellent customer service and a fresh, upbeat environment. We shared an assortment of desserts, including ‘Quindim de Yaya’, meaning ‘girlish charm’, a Brazilian-style homemade sweet baked coconut custard flan, served with a berry compote, and the indulgent ‘Chocolate Pot’. Once again we had had a great time, and even though I’ve said it before, Las Iguanas is the perfect family restaurant! Reviewed By Richard, Tina, Ed and Abi.
