November Well it’s raining, seemingly non stop, but we’re not letting that dampen our spirits because we have some great news! Starting from January, we will have a new name – Living In Oxford! The new name marks the end of 12 years of In Oxford Magazine. Sad to see it go but we’ve got some great plans for Living In Oxford, bringing you lots more approved reviews and great things to do in our fabulous county! So keep an eye out in January and if you fancy yourself as one of our new official reviewers, why not get in touch with us in the office to tell us why you need to be on the review team. Our penultimate cover for In Oxford Magazine sees one of our favourite Asian restaurants, Spice Lounge in Summertown. Owner Ali Aktar is one of the nicest guys you’ll meet and he will be pleased to welcome you to his wonderful restaurant – and his smile is even bigger these days as not only has he just come second in the Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards, but he has become a Dad again! Well done Mr and Mrs Aktar! We’ve got another issue packed full of reviews and listings, and if you think you’ll be stuck for something to buy for that awkward relative or friend, why not visit www.vouchoffers.co.uk where we have launched giftVOUCH for vouchers you can buy for a wide range of Oxfordshire businesses. Enjoy November! Richard Rosser Editor, In Oxford Magazine

On a recent rainy October Sunday evening I stepped into the Spice Lounge with my youngest daughter Noelle. The decor is minimalist and uncomplicated with some modern art, thereby allowing us to focus on the food. The very chatty and informative owner, Ali Aktar, suggested that we allow him to make the choices, having told him that we like a bit of heat! The Lime Pickle with the popadoms hit the spot, not just pungent and sour, but spicy too. Our starters consisted of Chingri Poori (Prawn wrap), Maachli Borah (Crispy Fishcakes), Paani Poori (Chick Pea in Crispy Poori) and Jhall Tikka (Spicy BBQ’d lamb). The stand outs were the Lamb, nice and spicy, and the Fishcake, which was spiced just enough not to destroy the delicate fish. In the meantime, to drink, Noelle had ordered the Mango Lassi (a treat, she reported) and I tried the Indian Sauvignon Blanc. I have rarely tried Indian wine before, and though it did not blow me away, it stood up to the spices in the food well as did the tried and tested Cobra Beer. On to mains consisting of Lamb Korai (ginger and spices), Chicken Naga Torkari (spicy and hot!) and Maachli Tenga (Fish in Broth with Ginger and Lemon Peel). These were accompanied by Sag Aloo (Spinach and Potato Fry) and Bhadda Gobi (Fried Cabbage). No Indian meal is complete without Bread and Rice. We ordered Pilau Rice, Lemon Rice and three breads, Poori, Roti and Chapatti. The Korai was nicely spiced though we thought could have done with a bit more heat and ginger. As to the Naga Torkari, this is a dish that I had never had before. Quite a dry curry, we were told this had a kick, and it did, those wicked Naga Chillies kicked in big time!! For those wanting to benchmark heat, Vindaloo+ is about right. This curry shows just a touch of citrussy sourness. The big surprise was the Fish Broth. When you go to an Indian Restaurant and you are faced with fish in a light, clear broth with carrots peppers and herbs you tend to do a double take. However, sub-continental food is not just about curries and kebabs. Its about much more to those who know. Carrots and Ginger are a great match, Ginger and Fish go superbly well together. Lemon with fish is heavenly too. All together it really works! The dish also challenges our stereotypes as to what this kind of food is all about. The lemon rice complemented it perfectly. All in all, I think we will be going back to see Ali at his “Nicely Spiced Lounge” that asks us to think out of the box! Six Good Points: • Brave enough to list an Indian wine • Enjoyed the art in the restaurant • Spice Lounge thinks outside of the box • Sensible and not outrageous use of spice • Extraordinarily good lime pickle Room For Improvement: • More homemade desserts would be great Review by Mark Greenwood 193 Banbury Road Oxford OX2 7AR Tel: 01865 510071 Web: www.spiceloungeoxford.co.uk

The search for the best restaurants in Oxfordshire is over. The winners of the 2013 Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards, established by In Oxford & Oxfordshire Magazine and organised by TERA Events, were announced at a glittering Awards ceremony on the evening of 1 October at The Manor Hotel. A simply stunning marquee, the inspiration of TERA Events, provided the backdrop for a Laurent Perrier champagne reception, three course meal and the Awards, hosted by JACK fm’s Trevor Marshall. The overall Restaurant of the Year title was awarded to The Star Inn, Sparsholt. The Star only opened in July last year when owner Caron Williams bought it to save the local pub. Caron said, “As a new business it is fantastic to be rewarded for all those difficult days when we were setting up.” Chef at The Star, Dave Watts, is already the winner of The Good Food Guide Chef to Watch, 2013.

The Awards celebrated the best dining in Oxfordshire from gourmet restaurant, won by The Lamb Inn Burford, to the traditional pub, won by The James Figg in Thame, best Asian, won by Yeti on Cowley Road, and best café, won by Burford Garden Centre. The Head Chef Sean Ducie of The Lamb Inn, Burford said he was “over the moon” a winner of the Gastronomic Restaurant category. The beautiful 17-room Gastro pub and brasserie dates back to 1402 and has held two rosettes for over 9 years. For the second year running, the award for Outstanding Service was made to Oxford Brookes Restaurant. Afterwards, the team said, “The team are absolutely thrilled to be recognised for the 2nd year, and among such great competition.” The winner of the coveted Public Vote was Reg’s Café in Banbury. Individual contributions were recognised for outstanding achievement including Tony Verdin of The Cherwell Boathouse, Max Mason of The Big Bang for the creativity he

showed, amongst other things, in building a beach in Oxford, and Patrick Greenberg of La Cucina who won HIT Training Apprentice of the Year. Presenting Max with his award, David Gambier, MD of Great Experience Travel Group, said “The standard is rising all the time.” A new Award was also made by In Oxford Magazine, with The Editor’s Choice Award going to The Quince Tree in Stonor. A special award was also made to Browns, an Oxford Institution for 40 years. Why not enter for 2014? Download an entry form at www.oxfordshirerestaurantawards.co.uk The trophies for this year’s Awards were once again designed and produced by NSF (National School of Furniture) based at Oxford Cherwell Valley College (OCVC). The theme this year was ‘onwards and upwards’ reflecting the post-Olympic spirit and a positive outlook for the future.
One of the event sponsors, Stuart Crook from Wellers Accountants said, “All of our partners, guests and associated friends had a fantastic time. I thought the event built on last year’s success and improved yet again thanks to the good quality nominees in the room.” Sarah-Jayne Beasley, Sales Manager at Eynsham Hall commented, “The room looked amazing and everyone had a wonderful time.” Isabelle Barber, Business Development Manager at Rhodes House said, the event was “A great tribute not only to you, The In Oxford Group’s energies in promoting Oxfordshire businesses, but also to the restaurant business community that you have so successfully nurtured over the last three years. Everybody likes winners and there were certainly a goodly handful of them around last night – congratulations to you and all your team who did such a grand job. Take it from one who knows how much work is involved in pulling such things off!” See page 27 to see how you can enter 2014’s Awards.

Ciphers Wednesday 6th - Saturday 9th November: Justine is found dead. Her sister Kerry sets out to uncover what happened and stumbles into a world of secrets and subterfuge. She becomes ever surer that she is being foiled and followed at every turn, and everything she discovers makes her question who Justine really was. How well can you ever know someone who lies for a living? Dawn King’s debut play Foxfinder was “thrillingly original” (Time Out) and “a contender for new play of the year” (Guardian). Now, in Ciphers, she has written a stunning thriller about spies, double agents, and the opaqueness of the human soul.
To Sir With Love Tuesday 19 - Saturday 23 November: To Sir, With Love tells the story of Ricky Braithwaite, a Cambridge graduate and ex-RAF fighter pilot, who experiences what it means to be black in post-war England.Unable to secure a job in his chosen profession as an electronic engineer, Ricky turns to teaching in a tough but progressive East End school. Supported by an enlightened headmaster, the determined teacher turns pupils’ rebelliousness into self-respect, contempt into consideration and hate into love.

The Compleat Female Stage Beauty Saturday 2nd November: It’s London 1661. The reign of Charles II, womanising, dashing merry monarch. After decades of Puritan austerity the playhouses have opened their doors again and crowds flock to see the sensation of the age: an actress of exquisite beauty and charm as well as fine talent – Edward Kynaston – for yes he is a man! Set in the courts, brothels and theatres of restoration London this will be a visual, aural and mental treat. 16+ Time: 8pm Tickets: £16, £14.50 (concs)
Betrayal by Harold Pinter Saturday 30th November: The play centres on an affair and it’s consequences. Emma is married to Robert, a publisher. But for seven years, has been having an affair with Jerry, a literary agent, Robert's best friend. In a clever dramatic device which really works well for the audience, the play starts after the end of the affair and charts significant events in reverse. It draws out all sorts of betrayals, betrayals of others, and ourselves. It includes Pinter’s trademark economical dialogue, and he skilfully draws out the character’s self absorption, and deceptions. And it is funny too! Times: 7.30pm Tickets: £14.50, £13 (concs)

Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Contrapunctus Thursday 14th November: The Treaty of Utrecht - Handel and Croft’s Oxford Odes (1713) This year is the tercentenary of the Treaty of Utrecht, which marked the end of the War of the Spanish Succession. This momentous event for the whole of Europe was celebrated in England at thanksgiving services in St Paul’s Cathedral and in Oxford where the peace was marked by the performance on 10 July – at the ‘Oxford Act’ in the Sheldonian Theatre. This concert provides the opportunity to be able to hear Croft’s splendid works in the space in which they were first performed three hundred years ago. The concert includes Handel’s famous Utrecht Te Deum and the Ode on the Birthday of Queen Anne (‘Eternal source of light divine’), which likewise celebrates the achievement of peace. Beethoven III Saturday 10th November: Beethoven. Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37. Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92. Marios Papadopoulos piano/conductor. Although it displays a flavour of the spirit of Mozart and his classical contemporaries, Beethoven’s passionate and somewhat fiery Piano Concerto No. 3 offers glimpses of a new musical era. The pairing of this piece with a more mature work, the brilliantly luminous Symphony No. 7, highlights just how far his style developed during his career. Pre-concert Recital, 7pm Beethoven Violin Sonata No. 4 in A minor, Op. 23 Shlomy Dobrinsky violin Sam Armstrong piano Available to concert ticket holders Time: 8pm Tickets £40 £28 £18 £10 Venue: Sheldonian Theatre
Beethoven IV Saturday 16th November: Beethoven. Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93. Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 19. Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, ‘Pastoral’. Marios Papadopoulos piano/conductor. Beethoven’s description of his ‘little’ 8th Symphony belies its considerable power and energy, but distinguishes it from the more spacious and tranquil ‘Pastoral’ Symphony which gently brings the concert to a close. Between symphonies Marios Papadopoulos plays the brilliant and compelling B flat Concerto. Pre-concert Recital, 7pm Beethoven Violin Sonata No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 12 No. 3 Yuri Zhislin violin Sergei Podobedov piano Available to concert ticket holders. Time: 8pm Tickets £40 £28 £18 £10 Venue: Sheldonian Theatre
Beethoven V Saturday 23rd November: Beethoven Symphony No. 4 in B flat major, Op. 60 Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 73, ‘Emperor’ Marios Papadopoulos piano/conductor. Sandwiched between Beethoven’s mighty 3rd and 5th symphonies, the 4th has a prevailingly sunny disposition that serves as a foil to its neighbours’ forbidding power. The last piano concerto in his set imparts a unique blend of physical and spiritual energy that perfectly complements the relaxed symphony, whilst epitomising humanity’s capacity to triumph over adversity. Preconcert Recital, 7pm Beethoven Violin Sonata No. 8 in G major, Op. 30 No. 3 Anna-Liisa Bezrodny violin Roope Gröndahl piano Available to concert ticket holders Time: 8pmTickets £40 £28 £18 £10 Venue: Sheldonian Theatre

Carrie A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (ChloĂŤ Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom. Based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, "Carrie" is directed by Kimberly Peirce with a screenplay by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
Gravity Dr. Ryan Stone is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone--tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth...and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour' of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.
Don Jon Jon Martello is a strong, handsome, good old fashioned guy. His buddies call him Don Jon due to his ability to "pull" a different woman every weekend, but even the finest fling doesn't compare to the bliss he finds alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Barbara Sugarman is a bright, beautiful, good old fashioned girl. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she's determined to find her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. Wrestling with good old fashioned expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Restaurant Review
Quod boasts a large bar, a beautiful terrace & a huge restaurant housing an amazing collection of young British art with a rare city centre car park to the rear. Open all day this stylish, busy, bustling Mediterranean influenced brasserie serves simply designed, unpretentious, robust food. Locals, students and tourists enjoy views from tall windows onto the High Street and Radcliffe Square. I have always been charmed by the buzz of Quod, and was looking forward to my visit with my wife on a Friday. It was pretty heaving but we were told this was usual for Quod and the place seemed to run seamlessly, clearly this brasserie is used to accommodating large numbers. I chose a simple favourite of mine, Jersey crab mayonnaise, Jane had the cider and onion soup to start, the cider added a subtle hint of tang to the sweetness of the onions. As always the hand picked crab had a wonderful flavour. Jane followed with baked brill, fennel, rosemary & lemon and I opted for the ‘Rofford Farm’ slow braised beef in red wine with button onions, lardons and mushrooms. The waitor explained that most of the meat on the menu is from the owner’s Oxfordshire Farm, so not so many food miles there then. We followed his wine recommendations, Viognier from Versant to go with the fish and for me the Bordeaux Claret from Vintners – Quod’s main wine supplier. This was a wonderful match for the perfectly braised and seasoned beef with well balanced flavours. The brill was cooked to perfection. Jane was delighted with the way the kitchen had managed to retain the delicate flavour of the brill. We even managed a classic tarte tatin with ice cream and a crema Catalana, a silky smooth custard with burnt sugar topping. Even with a couple of side dishes and decent wine the bill was pretty affordable. I hear they do a great set lunch menu served from midday until 7pm, £12.95 for two courses. The large bar serves coffee and cocktails and an impressive wine list and imaginative bar snacks. Three is a choice of three private dining rooms. Try and catch a roast and complimentary Jazz every Sunday evening 5 – 7pm. The waiter told us they are taking Christmas party bookings at the moment, £30 per person. Quod is imaginative, it is fun, but it is also a great dining experience. You can’t honestly ask for much more. Reviewed by Charlie Clarke Open every day from 7.00am - 11pm, 10.30pm Sunday. Restaurant Review
We really enjoyed the dining experience at Malikas and found its more subdued and intimate atmosphere a pleasant change from other Indian restaurants. No bright lights and no plush wallpaper, this is an elegant but friendly ambiance with soft lighting, starched white table linen and the feel of a dining experience rather than a cheerful curry meal. Partly the low ceiling, partly the shape of the restaurant – it is quite long and thin – contribute to the feeling of intimacy. The lighting and décor contribute too so that it is a place where you want to linger and we noticed that the other diners certainly did, obviously comfortable and enjoying the food without rushing. Evidently students like the place too and the calming atmosphere makes them behave well! And now on to the food. I chose a wonderful starter of Salmon Tikka and my husband had the quaintly sounding Chad Poti. I haven’t had Salmon in an Indian restaurant before so this was an experiment but the salmon was perfectly cooked, moist and pink in its dark tikka coating and the salad was fresh, delicious and crunchy, not a mere garnish. Really that would have been enough for the meal, considering the large basket of freshly cooked poppadams we had eaten but we went for a second course. For our main course, we considered the more traditional Podina section which are all cooked with mint leaves, and also the Rezalla which Mohammed explained was introduced to the UK by Oxford restaurant Aziz, his neighbour and well-known in the Cowley Road. Rezalla quickly became so popular that it was copied by all the Indian restaurants in Oxford and beyond. But in the end we chose two dishes we hadn’t had before - Chicken Chili Bhuna which was wonderful but crazy hot, full of fresh vegetables as well as fresh green chillis, and a Maach Biran Bhuna. This was a fish curry dish, not something I would normally go for but it was delicious, no bones in the fish and a mild but subtle sauce. We spent some time chatting to Mohammed the owner, a chef himself and with 15 years’ experience in the restaurant trade before he opened this establishment. He was both charming and chatty, telling us how important it is to adapt Indian dishes to the local taste here and how different that then makes them from the dishes his family eats at home. He has obviously chosen to include newer dishes from Madras and Bangladesh alongside more traditional recipes and he is hoping to gradually introduce some home style dishes to the menu too – they even might be cooked at home. Malikas calls itself a contemporary Indian restaurant and I’d say this is apt. I can thoroughly recommend you try it yourself for delicious food and a new experience.
