Theatre Article:
And Then Come The Nightjars by Bea Roberts
Tuesday 4th – Wednesday 5th October, 8pm The North Wall Arts Centre, South Parade, Oxford, OX2 7JN And Then Come The Nightjars, the critically acclaimed play by Bea Roberts will be playing at The North Wall on 4th & 5th October. Directed by Paul Robinson (My Mother Said I Never Should, Land of Our Fathers) and starring David Fielder and Nigel Hastings, this poignant and uncompromising play was a winner of Theatre503’s inaugural international Playwriting Award in 2014 and is a co-production with Bristol Old Vic, in association with Tara Finney Productions. Staged at Theatre503 in 2015, And Then Come The Nightjars was nominated for six Off West End Theatre Awards including Most Promising Playwright. Bea Roberts was also nominated for the Susan Blackburn Smith prize. “Intensely funny... a small gem of a play from a writer to watch’ ★★★★ The Daily Telegraph And Then Come The Nightjars is set in South Devon in 2001. It follows Jeff, a dairy vet with a problem and Michael, a cattle farmer, who is a problem himself. The two men have a begrudging respect for one another, usually expressed through a shared fag, a nip of whisky and some boisterous banter. But when Foot and Mouth sweeps across the UK countryside their friendship -and indeed their whole way of life -is thrown into question. Michael watches in disbelief as his cows are rounded up, and to his horror, it is Jeff brandishing the gun. Tender, funny and full of love, And Then Come the Nightjars is a story of male friendship against the odds, and a tribute to vanishing ways of rural life. Bea comments, “I am absolutely thrilled that Nightjars is going on the road. It's a beautiful and very special production in which the whole creative team have crafted every last detail with so much love and skill. It's fantastic it'll be reaching a wider audience now.” Director Paul Robinson thinks that much of the play’s appeal lies in its rural setting. He says, “We’ve been thoughtful about where we are touring to, and it feels right to take the play ‘home’ to the West Country, to re-visit some familiar city venues and to play in brand new rural spaces too. It’s wonderful to be able to continue our relationships with those audiences, particularly with a piece that has been able to touch people whoever they are and wherever they’re from. Plays about rural life are still in the minority so to have found this universal story to take to such diverse audiences is an incredible opportunity.” The North Wall Arts Centre, South Parade, Oxford, OX2 7JN Tel: 01865 319450 Web: www.thenorthwall.com www.livinginoxford.com

Art & Antiques Article:
Old Master Paintings and Drawings at Christ Church Christ Church is unique among the Oxford and Cambridge colleges in possessing an important collection of Old Master paintings and drawings. In 1765, General John Guise, a soldier and art collector, bequeathed his collection of over 200 paintings and almost 2000 drawings to his former college. This extraordinary gift enabled Christ Church to introduce art into Oxford education without the necessity to travel to Italy or to gain access to stately homes (which held the majority of art collections in the country). At that date the Christ Church Picture Gallery collection was unequalled by any other Oxford institution. The Bodleian ‘Picture Gallery’ housed mainly portraits and the Ashmolean Museum, the oldest museum in Britain, had a large and interesting collection of artifacts and objects, but at that time included few paintings. The collection is strongest in Italian art, from the 14th to the 18th century. Some of the early religious panels are painted by now-anonymous masters, but they allow the viewer to trace the beginnings of the professional ‘artist’ as we know him. Later works in the collection include paintings by highlyacclaimed artists such as Filippino Lippi, Tintoretto, Veronese, Annibale Carracci, and Salvator Rosa. There are also some remarkable works by northern painters such as Anthony van Dyck, Frans Hals, and Hugo van der Goes. The internationally renowned drawings collection is regarded as one of the most important private collections of Old Master drawings in the country and includes work by the masters; Leonardo, Michelangelo, Dürer, Raphael and Rubens. For reasons of conservation the entire drawings collection cannot be permanently on show, but a selection of drawings is always on view. These small in-house exhibitions are changed about every three months to enable the public to see a varied selection from this part of the collection. In 2016 we featured a diverse set of exhibitions, from a look at Venetian printing culture to a show of new works by Christ Church’s fine arts students. We are currently in the final weeks of The Beautiful Everyday: Old Master Drawings Transforming the Mundane into Art (15 July - 17 October 2016) and in late October will open two new exhibitions: Forgotten Faces: Portraits from our Storeroom (26 October 2016 - 20 February 2017) and Drawing in Red (26 October 2016 - 16 January 2017). Please see our website for events and exhibition information, and do stop by and visit soon!

Restaurant Review:
Jee Saheb Reviewed by Kelly Gavaghan 17th September
It’s safe to say that Friday night has become ‘curry night’ for the good people of the UK. So, on a clement evening in early September, my partner and I headed down to Summertown to seek out the nations favourite dishes. What we ate: Starters: 4 x Poppadum with condiments - £4.00, Badami Bater - £5.25, Lamb Chops - £5.25. Mains: Roop Chanda - £10.95, Chicken Tikka Balti - £8.95. Sides: Bhaigon Bhaji - £3.95, Bombay Potatoes - £3.95, Garlic Naan - £3.25. TOTAL - £42.25 And how was it? My Badami Bater starter translates as quail rubbed in lemon and ground pistachio, almond and cashew and is cooked in the tandoor. It was tangy, light and made a pleasant change. Roop Chanda was another enjoyable dish of whole Bengali fish (Pomfret), fried and spiced with red chillies, lemon juice and fresh herbs. My partners Chicken Tikka Balti was stunning! Tamarind has a lip smacking tartness which really shone through in the sauce. It was THE standout dish of the entire meal and we told the owner so! The Balti was served with, by far and away one of the best Naan breads that we have ever eaten! Delicately flavoured with garlic, light and fluffy on top with a thin crusty bottom it was cooked perfectly. The service and ambience: Jee Saheb translates as ‘Yes Sir!’ which suggests that the service here is good. It is! Attentive, polite staff looked after us well throughout the evening. We arrived at 7pm and by 8pm Jee Saheb was full and had a nice, buzzy atmosphere. What you should know… North Parade Avenue is a gorgeous narrow street, reminiscent of The Brighton Laines with its colourful buildings and hanging baskets. Free parking is on Winchester Street and is a minute’s walk from the restaurant. Jee Saheb is undergoing redecoration. Upstairs the new décor is clean and contemporary and we are told by the owner that downstairs will be finished soon. There is no wheelchair access to the downstairs toilets and no baby changing facilities. We recommend: Chicken Balti, Garlic Naan and also the Bhaigon Bhaji which is aubergine cooked in ginger, green chillies, onion and tomato. All very good indeed. Worth looking at the Chefs Recommendations for dishes that buck the trend of most Indian Restaurants menu’s. Would we go back? Yes – For the Balti and Naan! 15 North Parade Avenue, Oxford, OX2 6LX Tel: 01865 513773 Web: www.jeesaheb.co.uk
