October Let’s face it summer’s slipped away and the cold weather is already here, so now the kids are back at school, we turn our thoughts to shopping for Christmas and some nice meals out …. and maybe booking next year’s summer holiday! But Oxfordshire has some great things to do in October Possibly our longest serving In Oxford Magazine customer provides our front cover this month. The University of Oxford Shop have supported us almost since day one and we are delighted to have them on our cover for October. For readers who haven’t stepped into the High Street shop, you are in for a treat. Great gifts for all year round but maybe something nice for an overseas relative this Christmas? If you’re eating out, we review Café Aloha in Botley and The Snooty Mehmaan near Longworth. Both of our reviewers enjoyed the experience immensely and you can read about their findings in this month’s issue. Have a great October and don’t forget www.vouchoffers.co.uk for our latest fantastic hotel, restaurant and other deals with some great new vouchers added since you last checked out the site. Why not treat yourself to a voucher for Pegasus Theatre’s Christmas production or a room at one of 25 Village Hotels nationally? Keep an eye out for news of our new Vouch Gift Vouchers in the next edition of In Oxford Magazine. Richard Rosser Editor, In Oxford Magazine

An Official Oxford Christmas This Autumn, the University of Oxford Shop will launch a collection of gifts for the Christmas season and beyond. Commissioned exclusively for the University’s official shop on the High Street and online store, oushop.com, the designs included in the range have all been inspired by Oxford. Oxford Bauble A fairytale silhouette of Oxford’s dreaming spires created by UK designer, Emma Molony, has been captured for Christmas in a bauble. This handmade bauble features the Radcliffe Camera, Sheldonian Theatre, Tom Tower and Lincoln College Tower along with the University Museum swifts. Oxford Bags From on trend classic satchel designs to camera bags and cross body handbags, this bespoke Oxford range is made from the highest quality full grain leather. Influenced by classic British Vintage style, the bags are made in the UK. Little Oxford For our younger customers we have worked with Oxfordshire babywear company, Molly and Monty, to create two Oxford themed baby suits. Made from organic cotton, the short sleeved suits feature two sweet designs to choose from – the iconic Oxford bicycle or the Oxford dodo. Famous for its appearance in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Oxford don, Lewis Carroll, the dodo is much loved both by the shop and our customers. With this in mind, the dodo theme continues in store on many items, most unusual of all being a wooden pull-along dodo toy, handcrafted in wood sourced from sustainable forests in the EU. Oxford Cityscape Our contemporary Oxford Cityscape range by Lizzie Prestt was introduced last year and its trademark bright colours permanently brighten up the shop. We’ve stocked up on mugs, plates, coasters and placemats for Christmas 2013 as well as the Cityscape advent calendar complete with Father Christmas on his sleigh above the spires! Oxford Christmas Cards This year the shop has a healthy range of Oxford Christmas cards including exclusive designs from 8 of Oxford’s colleges. Oxford Candle Holder Designed exclusively for the shop by Oxfordshire’s Isis Ceramics, this collectable Christmas themed candle holder decorated in festive red, will be produced in a limited edition run of 25. We have lots going on for you throughout October, including an event with the wonderful Melissa Benn, and a Panel Discussion on the Scottish Referendum. This and so much more coming up over the next few months. Find out more on our events page at our website: www.blackwell.co.uk. Tickets are available from our Customer Service Department, Blackwell's Bookshop, 48-51 Broad Street, Oxford. Telephone: 01865 333623. We hope to see you at an event very soon! Tuesday 8th October at 7pm Melissa Benn/ What Should We Tell Our Daughters?: The Pleasures and Pressures of Growing up Female We have reached a tricky crossroads in modern women's lives and our collective daughters are bearing the brunt of some intolerable pressures. Although feminism has made great strides forward since our mothers' and grandmothers' day, many of the key issues - equality of pay, equality in the home, representation at senior level in the private, public and political sectors - remain to be tackled. This is a manifesto for every mother who has ever had to comfort a daughter who doesn't feel 'pretty', for every young woman who outperforms her male peers professionally and wonders why she is still not taken seriously, and for anyone interested in the world we are making for the next generation. Melissa Benn will be discussing her new book and signing copies in what is sure to be a wonderful event.
Thursday 17th October at 7pm Amit Chaudhuri/ Telling Tales Spanning a writing career of over twenty years, acclaimed novelist and author of Calcutta: Two Years in the City, Amit Chaudhuri, is also one of the most gifted essayists and critics writing today. Collected here for the first time, Telling Tales is a selection of Chaudhuri's most enduring short non-fiction that showcases his sense of humour, his idiosyncratic capacity to transform the mundane, his political engagement, and his mastery of words. From playing 'Cowboys and Indians' as a child in India to an outsider's perspective on the British class system, these essays will consolidate Chaudhuri's reputation as one of most original and elegant writers publishing in English today.
Thursday 24th October at 7pm Scottish Referendum Panel Discussion Yes Scotland or Better Together? Your guide to the options likely to be presented in Scotland's independence referendum. Following the signing of the Edinburgh Agreement in October 2012, Scotland's voters are promised a referendum on independence in autumn 2014. If they reject independence, the proposed changes from the Calman Commission's review on Scottish Devolution will most likely be put in place. But what will happen after the referendum? How will Westminster and the rest of the UK respond? This event will explain what both options would entail, in plain language, presenting the facts without taking sides. It focuses, not on which option is likely to win, but on how they would be put into place in practice.

The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster Saturday 12th October: A woman pays the price for daring to disregard her social status. A powerful family is destroyed by passion, envy and cruelty. Led by Cheek by Jowl Associate Owen Horsley, the fearless Eyestrings Theatre Company cuts to the heart of this Jacobean masterpiece with an inventive and exciting new adaptation. Watch as the pleasure-seeking world of the Duchess and her Brothers is unravelled using seven actors, six chairs and a gramophone; a truly thrilling production that confronts the epic themes of morality, class and sex head on. Tickets: £14.50, £13 (concs) Ages: 14+
As You Like It by William Shakespeare Friday 25th October: We are having the company here in August rehearsing the piece so we really want a full Cornerstone house to come and see some work that Cornerstone itself has sponsored. The acid test for a good Shakespearean adaptation is - can you actually follow the story? And this production is excellent from this perspective. Without in any way dumbing down, Transport make the story exciting and accessible whether you are an old time thesp or totally new to Shakespeare. Time: 8pm Tickets: £14.50, £13 (cons), £50 (family ticket) Ages :12+

Tonight's concert offers two mainstays of the German romantic repertoire, Brahms’ Symphonies 1 and 3. Clare Teal Friday 11th October: Performing her The Divas and Me – this is the show really close to Clare’s heart. Because it comprises the music of all those people who originally inspired her as a child and where her heart still is – Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Doris Day. The tender jazz ballads. Songs like Too Darn Hot and Get Happy and covers of modern jazz classics like Sing it Back by Moloko and Van Morrison’s Bright Side of the Road, and Clare’s own compositions. Clare Teal is BIG. Three times won a British Jazz Vocalist of the year award. She presents BBC Radio 2 show Big Band Special on Monday evenings, She presents Clare Teal on Sundays and regular presenter of Friday Night is Music Night she signed the biggest ever recording contract by a British jazz singer (SONY)Time: 8pm Tickets: £14.50, £13 (concs)
Gabby Young and other Animals Saturday 26th October : It’s an 8 piece British band – gypsy, folk, a little bit of rock and jazz – they have their new genre ‘circus swing’. Trumpet, trombone, piano, clarinet and Gabby’s amazing vocals. The orchestration is lush, it’s a little bit burlesque, a little bit 20’s flapper and a little bit gyspy. At the bottom of all that though is great songwriting and thoughtful lyrics. Think Arcade Fire, Kate Bush and gypsy folk. Gabby was the youngest ever recruit to the National Youth Choir at the age of 12. She was intending to become an opera singer but she heard the music of Jeff Buckley and jazz and she switched to this eclectic fusion. Time: 8pm Tickets: £13 (concs)

Café Review
Charlie Bartlett, the proprietor and the delightful Emma were there to welcome us when we arrived and immediately asked if we would like one of their signature cocktails. Sue chose the Vanilla Colada (rum based) and I went for the Blue Diamond ( vodka based). We were on time and there were plenty of spaces available in the free car park just along from the restaurant. The café was almost full and being as this was a Tuesday evening was testament to the reputation that Café Aloha is gaining both locally and gradually further afield. The décor is very pleasant and there is a real warmth about the café. The restaurant is open six days in the week Monday to Saturday and serves everything anybody would want, from breakfast through to lunch and then early evening happy hour cocktails, tapas and finally dinner. As Emma and Charlie told us, all the produce is sourced locally and only the finest ingredients are used. For our starters Sue went for the Tricolour which was the buffalo mozarello, avocado, cherry tomatoes and fresh basil leaf whilst I chose the grilled asparagus, with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and parmesan shavings. Sue chose a bottle of the Cuvee de Richard rose, which we shared for our starter but for my main course I had a glass of the Mount View Merlot from Chile. This was to accompany one of the best main courses I have ever eaten, the slow roasted pork belly with cannelloni beans and chorizo stew. It was fantastic! Sue had the pan seared fillet of sea bass with minty new potatoes and pepper sauce. Given that my typical meal on a Tuesday night is cheese on toast we ought not to have gone for dessert but homemade tiramisu was too tempting for Sue and the caramel cheesecake finished off what was an outstanding dinner for both of us. Café Aloha is certainly a restaurant to visit and if you want a takeaway they do that as well! Colin and Sue Rosser Café Aloha 11 The Square Westway Shopping Centre Botley Oxford OX2 9LH

Restaurant Review
The Snooty Mehmaan near Faringdon, just half an hour from Oxford City Centre, offers refined Indian and Thai flavours in the scenic setting of the Oxfordshire countryside. This culinary gem also boasts a beautiful bar area and extensive take-away menu. The rich combination of spices wafting from the kitchen was tantalising even from outside, tempting us inside the modern looking bar and through to the dining area with its striking original oak beams and flooring. We sampled both the Thai and Indian cuisine on offer and were impressed by the high standards. To start, my guest had the Soft Shell Crab with Mango, Sweet Chill and peanuts dotted through for added crunch. The refreshing mango and pokey chilli made this light enough that he was left wanting more, especially as complex aromas from the kitchen still hung in the air. My starter was a classic Chicken Sheek Kebab with a citrus dip, a lightly seasoned and mouth-watering opener. Our main courses were an extremely generous portion of Nua Lao Dang; a Thai stir-fry dish of strips of beef with mixed peppers in a tangy, sweet sauce served with noodles, and a side order of seasoned Pak Choi, and Kodhu Gosht; a delightful combination of lamb and butternut squash in a spicy tomato sauce, with aromatic Lemon Rice. The curry was served over a candle, keeping it sumptuously hot, allowing me to go back for more and more of the magnificent sauce. The meat in both dishes was of an impressively high standard, the lamb in particular was deliciously tender. Despite perusing the wide-ranging selection of cooling ice-creams and sorbets on offer, we felt unable to do credit to any of the desserts, replete as we were with our perfectly spiced and hearty main dishes (my partner was unable to finish his portion – potentially a first!). The authentic pot in which the curry was served, along with the Thai and Indian music, were small but noteworthy touches that made the evening particularly enjoyable. With such friendly staff, quick service and exotic flavours, we are eager to return for the fixed price buffet on offer every Sunday.
