Oxford is one of the world’s great cities. Its rich culture, built on education, art, music and literature, makes it a wonderful destination for visitors. The character and appeal of Oxford are formed by one other important aspect of its culture – fabulous restaurants. From the relaxed café scene in Jericho, to cosmopolitan dining in East Oxford, the city now boasts an outstanding restaurant sector that serves all tastes and budgets. And whilst there is no shortage of sophisticated dining destinations in the bustling city-centre, you can escape the city boundaries and visit a gastro-pub in an idyllic rural location. Oxford also offers much for those whose interest in food and drink extends beyond restaurant dining. Through Oxford Gastronomica, a specialist centre for the study of food, drink and culture, you can achieve culinary enlightenment by attending public events, following educational programmes and interacting with leading food writers, broadcasters and chefs. So make the most of this amazing city and let its restaurants, pubs and bars shape your experience.
Donald Sloan Chair, Oxford Gastronomica Head of The Oxford School of Hospitality Management, Oxford Brookes University
I moved to Oxford three years ago and the abundance of fantastic restaurants to choose from never ceases to amaze me. Oxford, as a city, is defined by the colleges, the culture and a history which is second to none. To spend a day in Oxford enjoying a stroll around a picturesque college, followed by some punting and then a coffee in a small café is my idea of heaven, but being able to round the day off in one of the many excellent restaurants Oxford has to offer makes the day perfect. But don’t feel limited to the city centre. If you’re visiting Oxford, why not extend your stay and make sure you sample one of the superb restaurants beyond the city walls. With many a short taxi ride away, you can immerse yourself in rural Oxfordshire and see why our beautiful county is not only an attraction to visitors from afar, it’s also a wonderful place to live.

The 400 year old The Chequers at Burcot standing just off the A415 about 5miles south of Oxford has come a long way since multi-award-winning chef Steven Sanderson first took the reins in 2006. Steve’s cooking is intelligent, straight forward and elegant, with simplicity, flavour and skill at the top of his agenda. His ability to create home comfort and nostalgic food with a modern twist is evident throughout the ever evolving menu. Steven values seasonal produce, and he puts emphasis on small, family run, local farms, and tries to get produce from as close to source as possible. "We take a lot of time and care in choosing who supplies produce to The Chequers. As a company we aim to be as environmentally friendly as we can and this in turn is a demand we make of suppliers." The focus at The Chequers is on great food and customer service to make your visit a memorable one and to exceed customers' expectations every step of the way. Booking is always recommended.

Only a couple of minutes from either the Botley Road or the southbound A34, The Fishes is a hidden gem. Quite a big gem, too. The Fishes is an imposing Victorian building set in 3 acres of wooded grounds leading down to the banks of Seacourt Stream. On sunny days the gardens are dotted with picnickers, enjoying a picnic basket ordered from the bar, whilst the deck that wraps around the conservatory offers one of the few opportunities in land-locked Oxford to dine outside with an idyllic view. In recognition of this, the Fishes was named Al Fresco Dining Pub of the Year in 2006, as well as winning an award for its Sunday roast. The Fishes also appears in the Michelin Guide. Whether you pop in for a pint, a business lunch, dinner with friends and family, or want to throw a barbecue for your friends in our garden we promise you a friendly welcome. All day long.

When we opened Pierre Victoire in 1996 we wanted to create somewhere for people to enjoy authentically cooked, traditional dishes in an informal environment at reasonable prices, the way the French do… Sixteen years on, and we’re still doing just that – and we’re busier than ever! Our team of chefs have earned high praise for their signature dishes such as Duck Confit, escargot, moules-frites, tartiflette and fondue savoyarde. And the restaurant itself is certainly informal with its rustic furniture and candles, but our customers love it, and most are regulars. Eat from £6.90 at lunch time, or in the evening choose from either our a la carte menu or one of our prix fixe menus, such as three courses for £22 or our pre-theatre menu which offers two courses plus coffee for £10.50. For groups and parties of up to 60, for any celebration, we offer a three course party menu for £21.

The Big Bang is the true gastronomic experience of Great Britain, with 180 seats inside and out, set within Oxford’s most ancient and beautiful setting, the Oxford Castle Quarter. We serve classic favourites, done with a bit of style. Almost everything is sourced from within 20 miles of the city and in doing so, we allow you to taste the authentic flavours of Oxford, not a chain restaurant version of it. We also throw in the best of our art, of local live music, and add a touch of eccentric British charm. Whether it’s Barbeque, Breakfast, Sunday Roast, coffees, traditional homecooked puddings, or the widest selection of our award winning Great British Bangers & Mash, there’s no better place for it.
