Lead Article

Brasserie Blanc is situated in the hub of Jericho’s dining strip, Walton Street, and is a taste of the very food Raymond Blanc grew up eating in Besancon as a youngster. The restaurant has a small bar that greets would be diners, and a subtly decorated dining room, split into different sections. One of the first things you notice is the atmosphere, a stamp of approval that this is a popular and relaxed venue. Diners of all ages grace the tables, talking, drinking and eating. The menu offers an array of starters, as well as some great sharing options, such as the savoyarde cheese fondue and the selection board. We decided to sample the latter, which comes with chicken liver parfait, hot oak smoked mackerel, Milano salami, cucumber and dill, carrot and fennel and a tomatoe salad, and is priced at £11.00 as a starter for two. Feasting on the selection board begun as the plate was arriving. It was immaculately presented and was devoured with our eyes. The taste did not disappoint either, with the chicken liver parfait proving to be a highlight. For main, diners can choose from classic French cuisine like Toulouse sausage and smooth mash potatoe, snails or something different like the seared North Sea cod fillet. Also on offer are dishes from the grill such as steak, pork steak or king prawns in garlic and the specials. I opted for the 8oz sirloin steak at £18.50, which comes with chips, grilled tomatoe and a sauce of your choice, for which I opted to have horseradish. As my usual form dictates, I had to have the steak rare. Again, my dish’s consumption began before it arrived on the table, with immaculate aesthetics heightening the anticipation. The steak was cooked as I had asked, and washed down with a glass of house champagne. To complete our culinary experience, the ‘Weiss’ dark chocolate fondue was a necessity. Coming with a selection of three types of biscuit, plus strawberries and priced at £12.50 to share, this was the perfect ending to our meal. Hot, velvety dark chocolate combined with a selection of dipping tools is the stuff ‘sweet’ dreams are made of. One of the common misconceptions about Brasserie Blanc is that it is a pricey venue. However, although this food would justify a premium price tag, it’s actually priced competitively. The Toulouse sausage costs less than ten pounds, and the sharing options are excellent value. The restaurant also offers the ‘Jeune Blanc’ option on many dishes, meaning half a portion for half the price, suitable for younger diners. Those diners seeking a set price deal need look no further than the ‘Dine with Wine’ menu priced at £11.00 for two courses, and £13.45 for three courses before 7.00pm and £13.50 for two courses, and £15.95 for three courses after 7pm. This option gives diners the chance to choose from a choice of three starters, four mains and three puddings. Highlights from each section include the mint and marjoram pea pancakes to start, shirred smoked haddock and leek for main and rum and raisin panacotta with raspberry sauce for dessert. Of course, every meal should be accompanied with a drink, and diners are given the choice of wines to bolt on to the meal ranging from £1.95 for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc to £4.70 for a glass of Joseph Perrier Champagne. On top of all of that, a roast of sirloin can be enjoyed on Sundays for just £12.80, adding a starter or desert for £2.45, excellent value all round. Add all of the above to the first class service we received from Pavel, Monika and Damian, who form part of the excellent team at Brasserie Blanc, and you have a venue that not only serves fantastic French cuisine, but is priced so that everyone can enjoy it. Killer Elite Synopsis: Based on a true story, "Killer Elite" races across the globe from Australia to Paris, London and the Middle East in the action-packed account of an ex-special ops agent who is lured out of retirement to rescue his mentor. To make the rescue, he must complete a near-impossible mission of killing three tough-as-nails assassins with a cunning leader.

The Change-Up Synopsis: In this family comedy, Jim Carrey is Mr. Popper, a driven businessman who is clueless when it comes to the important things in life – until he inherits six penguins. Popper's penguins turn his swank New York apartment into a snowy winter wonderland – and the rest of his life upside-down.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy Synopsis: The feature adaptation of John Le Carre's seminal cold war best-seller. Set in the aftermath of the cold war, the thriller tells the tale of a spy-hunt within the highest echelons of the British Secret Intelligence Service. Espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6's echelons.

Abduction Synopsis: For as long as he can remember, Nathan Harper has had the uneasy feeling that he's living someone else's life. When he stumbles upon an image of himself as a little boy on a missing persons website, all of Nathan's darkest fears come true: he realises his parents are not his own and his life is a lie, carefully fabricated to hide something more mysterious and dangerous than he could have ever imagined.

Apollo 18 Synopsis: Officially, Apollo 17, launched December 17th, 1972 was the last manned mission to the moon. But in December of 1974, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defense. What you are about to see is the actual footage which the astronauts captured on that mission. While NASA denies its authenticity, others say it's the real reason we've never gone back to the moon.

Fright Night Synopsis: Senior Charlie Brewster finally has it all going on: he's running with the popular crowd and dating the most coveted girl in his high school. In fact, he's so cool he’s even dissing his best friend. But trouble arrives when ‘Jerry’ moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right....

Shark Night 3D Synopsis: A sexy summer weekend turns into a blood-soaked nightmare for a group of college students trapped on an island surrounded by voracious underwater predators in Shark Night 3D, a terrifying thrill ride from director David Ellis.

Kids Review

This August, Stagecoach put on a gripping production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's musical thriller, Sweeney Todd, as a holiday workshop, at Headington School, Oxford. Stagecoach Theatre Arts School aims to “nurture and develop” children with part-time training in the performing arts. This production was performed by a selection of their students aged 11 to 19, although the age gap went unnoticeable behind the cast’s professionalism and maturity, a credit to the Stagecoach team. The chilling story of Sweeney Todd, is famous for its fatal mix of love and revenge, the murder of the barber’s ill-fated customers and a mysterious new pie filling. The Stagecoach team did not fail to capture the eerie horror in any area of the production. The smoky stage, dark eyed make up and rustic costumes all contributed to the anxious atmosphere. Not to mention the amusing irony of pork pies and marzipan fingers served during the interval; superb attention to detail. The cast themselves were extremely talented. The female lead vocals from Harriet Matthews (Mrs Lovett) and Chantelle Vircavs (Johanne) stole the show, although the acting was of an equally high standard as the cast nailed the cockney accent. Luke Mercieca’s amusing Italian charisma as Pirelli also stands out as, from Malta, Luke is one of the actors taking part in an annual exchange. The exchange students deserve extra credit for doing so well in their second language. Harriet Matthews gave an exceptional performance as she effortlessly fulfilled the multiple roles of Mrs Lovett. Harriet, 17, admits it was “hard work” but “heart lifting and inspiring.” Sweeney Todd was played by James Penniston, 17, who executed the evil nature perfectly. James said he would definitely play the villain again, describing it as “emotional turmoil.” Ryan Anderson (Toby) brought endearing youth to the production, charmingly portraying his love for Mrs Lovett. Ryan, 16, “loved every second of it.” Maya Sprigg, Principal of Stagecoach Oxford, thought Sweeney Todd to be an impossible challenge. However, with the musicality made graceful by Dan Cowtan, Musical Director, a committed team and hard work, it was, agreeably, a “testament to the calibre of the staff and cast.” David Wilson, the director, has achieved great success with this production, which unbelievably was put together in just 7 days, very impressive. It was brilliantly delivered and fantastically dramatic and gory. Although, unlike the actors, I don’t think I want a go on the infamous demon barber’s chair! Restaurant Review

Al Andalus Tapas Bar on Little Clarendon Street, slightly out of Oxford’s city centre brings a touch of Spain to its famously British surroundings. On entering, you are immediately transported to Spain, be it not for the weather! The warm mediterranean colours are very inviting, setting the mood. The decor is consistently Spanish, from the paintings on the walls through to the heated outside area, perfect for a summer evening. My friends and I were welcomed with friendly smiles and shown to our table. Positioned in the window, it was cosy and intimate. Firstly, we ordered a jug of Al Andalus’ classic Sangria which was fruity and addictive (although the extensive regional wine list begs for a return visit.) The waitress thoughtfully offered us a jug of water as well. Full of anticipation, we opened the menu to a tantalising array of delicious choices. Al Andalus boasts fresh, homemade cooking throughout their selection of cold or hot tapas and variety of paella. After much deliberation we chose 8 tapas dishes, including 2 of their specials, and of course, paella! The waitresses were polite and patient, assuring us they would answer any queries. The staggered arrival of food brought with it aroma and wide eyes. It was so fresh, especially the special, Gazpacho. The lamb kebab was succulently tender and perfectly cooked alongside the chorizo and cheese skewers which went down a storm with my friends, leading to a second helping! All the while the waitresses attentively replenished our drinks. The attractively presented Paella Mixta followed, which tasted as good as it looked, packed with Spanish flavour. I loved it so much I asked the waitress to box it up! For the vegetarian’s among us, I recommend the Berejenas a la miel from the specials, gorgeously fried aubergines with honey. We finished by sharing a Crema Catalana for dessert, recommended to us by the waitress, who was very right to do so! Alternatively, an impressive display of liquors and coffees could complete this perfect meal. The owner bought the restaurant in Feb 2008 and has achieved an excellent dining experience, suitable for large groups or quite couples. Cesar De la Fuente, Manager, recommends visiting on a Friday or Saturday night to enjoy the weekly flamenco dancing. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening at Al Andalus and left feeling content and satisfied but unwilling to leave Spain behind.
