ART ON CAMPUS Image: The Hive is an advanced educational hub by top UK designer Thomas Heatherwick, the man behind the London Olympic Cauldron. It is a sustainable smart building with 56 new-generation smart classrooms

The New Art Space MAN is one of NTU Museum’s various “Art on Campus” initiative - an initiative that is supported by Provost with the aim of ‘bringing art to the people’. This initiative which started in 2014 has been well-received. To-date, a total of 6 prominent public art installations have been installed around campus. Many of which were created by NTU Community. Also, in collaboration with School of Art Design and Media (ADM ) and ERI@N, NTU Museum also started a Renewable Energy Public Art collection – a collection that is unique to NTU Museum and not available in other museums in Singapore. More public art installations will be installed on campus and NTU Museum looks forward to partnering schools, students and faculty in creating and installing more artworks. The Museum launched an “ArtTrail” on campus in 2017.

role in human life: a source of light, heat and safety. But it is also a gathering place where stories are told and ideas are shared. The place of fire in our lives has evolved. But the deep need to gather and share stories remains. Drawing from a bottomless multimedia toolbox, artists can deliver high-impact projects that serve as modern-day gathering places. Artists can tell stories that reconnect us to each other and to a sense of belonging to something bigger.

GLOBAL CONTEXT Globalization and digitization have changed the function and context of art along with the way art is presented. The flood of information is dramatically changing the way we interact with each other and with the world. Contemporary city environments can be integrated not only with media arts, architecture and technology, but also with data information and user experience across a variety of digital interfaces. .

SINGAPORE CONTEXT “THE RENAISSANCE CITY PLAN”

The government’s best efforts was launched in 2000 with the goal of developing culture as important factor to distinguish Singapore from competing cities in South East Asia

RENAISSANCE CITY PLAN

“How does Singapore position itself in the race to create signature architecture and iconic building in relation to Asian competitors with equally ambitious plans for cultural primacy such as Seoul, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, and Abu Dhabi? The art remains a rather marginal concern for most Singaporeans despite the government’s best efforts. “The Renaissance City Plan” was launched in 2000 with the goal of developing culture as important factor to distinguish Singapore from competing cities in South East Asia and as a key attractor for “talent, investment, and international attention”. It was implemented rapidly: The Singapore Biennial was founded in 2006, Art Stage Singapore began in 2011, and an arts complex in the Gillman Barracks, a former British military base was established. The recent National Gallery marks the culmination of these efforts. Although these venues are gaining international attention and serve as platform for regional artists, they fail to attract talent on a long term basis. Singapore
