ARTIST INSPIRATION Works -- Bleach collages
Sterling Ruby’s works were done in various media including ceramics, painting, collages and he also does large installations. His works are deliberately disordered, which I find particularly interesting. He ties in psychological and social aspects in his work.
Sterling Ruby / 42 American artist from Germany Lives and works in Los Angeles
In one of his series, Bleach Collages (BC), he used materials like fabric scraps, denim, and rags to create playful prints. This series was inspired by the practical beauty of Gee’s Bend quilts and Japanese Boro textiles. I am particularly inspired by this series of disorderly patterns using bits of different fabrics to portray this array of patterned mess.
Works -- Fold paintings
Tauba Auerbach is greatly influenced by mathematics and physics and manipulates the idea of structures and logics and make it poetic. Her recent works emphasises on abstract patterns, combining order and randomness. She folds and twists canvases to form creases and then lay them out again and paints them, to create an illusion of three-dimensional space.

EXPERIMENTAL PRINTS
Technique: Fumage Materials: Lighter Paper Candle
Smoke stains appear blotchy in first few tries and paper were burnt because candle was too close to the paper. Controlling movements of candle with hand gave a nicer flow as compared to setting the candle in one place and moving the paper around.
Technique: Automatic Materials: Papers Chinese Ink Brushes Free mind Random strokes and marks made by the brush with Chinese ink by manipulating angle of brush and amount of pressure, without any planning or thinking.
EXPERIMENTAL PRINTS
Materials: Bubble wrap Copy paper Block printing paper Block printing plate Press Technique: 01 Roll ink over plate 02 Place bubble wrap on plate 03 Place paper over wrap 04 Press down paper 05 Lift paper from plate (Two to three times)
Materials: Container of water Chinese Ink Paper Technique: Ink Marbling 01 Stain the surface of water in container with Chinese Ink. 02 Place paper on the surface for a marble effect and leave to dry.
REFLECTIONS &LEARNING P O I NT S 01 Automatism & Monoprints In the first lesson, we explored Chinese ink, automatic techniques, and making marks spontaneously. I find it quite fascinating that even with random brush strokes and mindless play of ink, you could create very interesting marks. Monoprinting and the press was also introduced.
02 Working on Emotion Study A very messy yet very enjoyable time in class where all of us got started on our postcard prints. A lot of paper and ink was used and I went home with ink stained fingers and a bunch of prints all ready to be scanned.
03 Digital Processing Where we learned how to digitally manipulate and enhance scanned prints. We also learned how to zoom into the details and textures to take parts of the scans out to create abstract postcards..
04 Consultations Getting constructive feedback on our works, identifying the emotions in our works, discussing about the different ways of tagging and of displaying the postcards.
