EXPLORATORY RESEARCH: INTERVIEW

MISCONCEPTIONS & STIGMA

OF MENTAL HEALTH

Primary Research Interview

Interviewee: Mr. James Chan - Counsellor, Bukit Batok Community Rehabilitation Centre

Many clients find it extremely difficult to integrate back to the society after their discharge from the Institute of Mental Health.

There are many prejudices about people with mental illnesses - most common one being that they are unfit to live in the society.

Art, especially tactile art, was especially useful in helping clients to express themselves. Sense of touch became a primary tool.

Many clients do recover fully from their mental disorders and their success stories serve as a source of inspiration for those who are still struggling with their own illnesses.
