Welcome
Why Advertise?
to the February issue of IN&AROUND!
When it comes to growing your business, promotion is everything. At IN&AROUND Magazine, we offer a range of advertising packages that put your brand in front of thousands of potential customers.
Welcome to the February edition of IN&AROUND! We may now be in the month of love, but there’s plenty more to adore in and around County Durham at this time of year – and we can be your perfect guide to the best of it.
Our free magazine is delivered to over 20,000 homes and businesses across Chester-leStreet, Derwentside and Durham every month – and our readership continues to grow. With solutions to suit all budgets and requirements, from quarter pages to front page ads, we can help you make an impact. What’s more, with every order, we offer a complimentary design service to ensure that your messages are delivered in the most attractive and eyecatching manner possible.
For a sample of what we mean, just take a look at our ‘What’s on’ section on page 54. Or you could get involved with this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight (page 30) or catch a movie – our new writer, Simon Trelfa, has helped you out with his verdict on M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller, Glass on page 48.
Whether you’re launching a new product, running a promotion or would like to find out more about how IN&AROUND can work for you, call us on 0191 388 26 98
Alternatively, you could get your boots on for a much more ambitious trip outside our region. This month, our regular contributor Alex Nelson has journeyed to Perth (page 20). No, that’s Perth in Scotland, not Australia, so it’s thankfully just a three-hour train ride away!
In the spotlight.
Finally, we’ve also been digging around on the Internet this month, and come up with some fun ideas for what you might wish to buy for your beloved for the 14th (page 26).

Bye for now, and we’ll see you again in March!

Local nursery celebrates their litter heroes
M
ains Farm House Nursery in Chester le Street is on a mission in 2019 to tidy up the environment outside the nursery. Lynsey Roy, Nursery Director, says, “Being in the centre of town is fantastic for our children and their families. It is a convenient location for parents and enables us to take the children on trips to the library and post office. However, litter builds up in the car park next door and blows into our front garden, which is not a welcoming sight for the children. We have been in touch with Durham County Council who have cleaned up the area for us and we have also requested a litter bin to be located near to the car park on West Lane”. The nursery is taking the opportunity to teach the children about the importance of looking after their local environment, “The children have been learning about the importance of respecting our environment and looking after it for the future. This is a key part of the British Values which are embedded in our nursery curriculum”, says
Leanne Crone, Nursery Manager. “Of course, safety still has to come first, and the children love putting on their protective clothing and practising their fine motor skills with the litter pickers”. The nursery has even set the children a mission to extend their learning at home by running a competition via their Facebook page for the children to show how they are helping out at home. You can find out how the children are getting on by following #mainsfarmlitterhero. Mains Farm House Nursery are an Ofsted Outstanding provider, located in the centre of Chester le Street. 6 | IN&AROUND

Business Spotlight.
on Virginio Ciliberti of Tavistock Italia at The Broard Inn
How did your personal involvement with the Board Inn begin?
Do you hold events at the pub? If so, what can visitors expect in 2019?
It all started just over seven years ago, when we had an offer to take over the Board Inn. With myself, Gino as chef and Antonio as front of house, it was a success and an achievement from day one. Since then, we been very proud of our restaurant and are excited for everything the future has to hold.
About three times a year, we organise a music event with a three-course meal, for the chance to get up close and personal with Jason Isaacs. The dates are still to be confirmed, but usually we hold one around Easter, one in the summer and then the third in December.
How would you describe the ethos of the Tavistock Italia Gastropub? It’s quite simple: we describe our ethos here at Tavistock Italia as good authentic Italian food, well-priced and fantastic friendly staff.
What are your longer-term plans for the pub? Our long-term plans are to continue to be as popular we been for the last seven years, and provide a good casual place to eat and drink.
Are most of your diners local, or do you attract a lot of people from further afield?
Why should diners choose the Tavistock Italia Gastropub over alternative eateries in the area?
Our diners are a mix of local people and those who travel from further afield. We are a small and very cosy pub where you can relax, have a glass of vino and more. We welcome anyone wanting to enjoy some authentic Italian food.
Our diners love the atmosphere at the Board Inn, which you will not find elsewhere in the area. The interiors and the cuisine reflect the perfect combination of Italian and British cultures, which are both at the very core of our philosophy. Whenever Italian’s visit the UK they fall in love with English pubs. This is because, they are the equivalent of an Italian local bar, where Italians meet for a coffee, an aperitive or a glass of wine. We want to bring these two realities together – our love for our own cuisine and the feel good factor.
What menu highlights can diners currently look forward to? We will have a new menu by Easter, as well as new additions to our wine list. We also have good selections of local gin. 10 | IN&AROUND

Another reason to be hopeful – 17 February is Random Acts of Kindness Day th
Do you ever feel that the world is unnecessarily harsh and abrasive these days? We certainly find ourselves thinking this at times here at IN&AROUND, which is just one more reason why we are so thankful for the return of the annual Random Acts of Kindness Day later this month. When is Random Acts of Kindness Day? Strictly speaking, while 17th February is Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Day and has even been reported as such by British sources such as the Evening Standard, it has also previously been celebrated on other days of the year around the world. As if that’s not confusing enough, it’s also important to distinguish RAK Day from such similar celebrations as World Kindness Day and Kindness Day UK, which are both on 13th November. RAK Day is coordinated by the similarly-named Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, which you can learn more about at www.randomactsofkindness.org. This internationally recognised non-profit organisation is based in Denver, Colorado, and seeks to “make Earth the kindest planet in the universe... striving to make kindness the standard in every aspect of life.” The foundation – which simply describes itself as RAK – oversees not only RAK Day itself, but also the weeklong celebration of kindness known as RAK Week, which takes place this year from 18th to 22nd February. As if all of that isn’t enough, there’s also RAK Friday, which next happens on 29th November 2019 and is based on the idea that instead of shopping on Black Friday, we perform random acts of kindness to kickstart the festive season. 18 | IN&AROUND
So, what acts of kindness might you do this month? The beauty of Random Acts of Kindness Day, of course, is that you don’t have to sign up to anything or even necessarily tell anyone you’re celebrating it. It really is just about giving you an obvious opportunity to be kind to someone – and there are plenty of ways to do precisely that. The RAK website suggests various possible acts of kindness, such as sending an uplifting text to a friend or family member, allowing a driver to merge into traffic with a wave and a smile, treating someone to a cup of coffee or reaching out to a family member you haven’t spoken to in a while. Other possibilities listed by the Evening Standard include smiling if you make eye contact with someone on public transport, putting a pleasant note in your other half’s bag, sending a letter or care package to a friend, donating money to a worthy cause or picking up some extra food for a homeless person. But there’s someone you should be especially kind to this month... ...and that person is yourself! With research having shown that writing down three things you are grateful for each night can boost overall happiness by 25%, you’ve got plenty of reason to be kind to yourself on 17th February – and for that matter, every day of the year. After all, the gift of kindness – for both yourself and others – should be for life, not just one day!

PERTH
and Dorothy Renton in the early 1920s after they built their Arts & Crafts-inspired house. It’s set on the side of Kinnoull Hill, overlooking Perth. The couple were keen to have a garden that featured rare and unusual plants and flowers from all over the world. Thanks to the seeds collected by renowned plant hunters and due to Dorothy’s remarkable gardening skills, the couple’s wish was granted. There’s a Branklyn Gardens also in Ingleby Barwick on Teesside. Don’t get confused! Today, gardeners and botanists come from across the globe between April and October to admire Branklyn’s outstanding collection, particularly the the rhododendrons, alpines and peat-garden plants. But the riverside park which I walked through to the city centre has plenty of interest of its own.
I
n the Brockley Whins area of South Tyneside are two adjoining housing estates. To the west is the Scotch estate where all the roads are named after cities and towns in Scotland, which is Jarrow NE32. To the east is the Australian estate in South Shields NE34, roads named after cities and towns in Australia. Linking the two is Perth Avenue, proving that someone in the planning department had a sense of humour. Qantas now provide a 17.5 hour direct flight from Perth, Australia, to London Heathrow, but Perth, Scotland, is easier to reach by train in around three hours, including on LNER’s direct Highland Chieftain from Darlington and Newcastle once a day. Otherwise change from LNER to Scotrail at Edinburgh Waverley. Perth station appeared in the film “The King’s Speech”.
Scone Palace, crowning place of Scottish Kings, is on winter hours through February and March, offering FREE admission to the huge grounds and shops until full opening in April. If you are in need of a haircut, try Sweeney Todd’s on South Street, unless the photo puts you off! The Perth Concert Hall and Museum and Art Gallery in the north east quadrant of the city are worth a visit, and a twenty minute walk out of town will take you to the Black Watch Regimental Museum, open through the winter, which is acclaimed as one of the best regimental museums in the UK and there’s a bus back into the city centre and the station from outside the museum. Whilst Perth can easily be visited in a day, you might want to stay a night or two and I have two recommendations. Right opposite the station is the Station Hotel, not as grand as it used to be but comfortable enough and a great place to drop your luggage before going out to explore. A trip advisor reviewer described it as having “masses of potential” which can be a euphemism for “in need of refurbishment”. But it’s a great building to have a poke around and at £35-£50 a room this time of year is a bargain. More upmarket in the city centre’s South Street is the Salutation Hotel, also walkable from the station.
I usually get to Perth once a year, usually on a Friday at the end of August, when bus and rail firm Stagecoach, headquartered in the City, has its AGM. I usually try to visit somewhere else at the time, and last year it was Branklyn Garden, a small but fascinating National Trust for Scotland garden on the east side of the River Tay. To get there I walked across a railway bridge accessed from Tay Street, alongside the river, and walked up to the Garden with a pleasant cup of coffee and cake on the terrace www.visitscotland.com outside the café. This attractive garden was developed by John www.perthcity.co.uk

Want to get your beloved something a little more interesting this
Valentine’s Day?
We can empathise with how you’re probably feeling this month, when it comes to finding your honey a suitable Valentine’s Day present. Sure, there’s always chocolate, but you might already have more than enough boxes of the stuff left over from the festive season. As for flowers... bleh, they’re a bit unimaginative. Don’t even get us started about socks, shower gel or aftershave, either... What options, then, are there for a Valentine’s gift that really will signal your appreciation for your lover, and bring a smile to their face that says more than, “Lynx Africa, again? You shouldn’t have”? Here at IN&AROUND, we’ve picked out some of the best that you can purchase online right now. We First Met Here Postcode Jigsaw We all remember where we first met our sweetheart – or we hope you remember yours, anyway. So why not get them a jigsaw consisting of a map of the locality in question? The central piece of the 400-piece jigsaw is heart-shaped, and there’s even space on the box lid for you to hand-write a personal message. You can get it for just £24.99 from www.prezzybox.com. Buy a Piece of the Moon Despite the best efforts of Sir Richard Branson, we’ve not yet reached the stage of package holidays to the Moon, let alone anyone having a nice little villa there. So why not give your (no doubt rather disappointed by this) galactic-minded lover the best possible consolation, in the form of ownership of an acre of Moon land? Admittedly, it’s not official given that no one can actually claim to own the Moon, and if anyone ever does, we suspect Wallace and Gromit will get there 26 | IN&AROUND
first for the cheese. Still, it’s a lovely otherworldly present for a space or sci-fi aficionado, priced at £14.99 from www.findmeagift.co.uk. Personalised Favourite Song Soundwaves Print Whether your beloved’s favourite song is “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston, that Diana Ross and Lionel Richie classic “Endless Love” or, well, “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-a-Lot, what could be more romantic than buying them a unique personalised print, depicting the given song’s visual soundwaves? It’s an exclusive offering at www.notonthehighstreet.com, priced at a mere £20. Swizzels Love Hearts Three Candle Gift Pack Admit it – you gobbled down way too many of these as a kid, and may have even swapped some with whoever your childhood crush was at the time. So, you might as well reignite your obsession (with the sweets, anyway) in a manner that doesn’t give the two of you a possibly unhealthy sugar rush. These three candles emit lovely flavoured scents of Red Cherry, Very Vanilla and Strawberry for just £6.99 when purchased from www.iwantoneofthose.com. Naughty Knot If you’re a lady still struggling to think of a decent Valentine’s gift for your honey, there’s always the option of just presenting... yourself. What’s more, www.gettingpersonal.co.uk gives you the ideal wrapping, priced at £12.99. It’s a sexy little number with ribbons that can be pulled, sending the ‘wrapping’ slowly falling to the floor to reveal... everything. Just the thing for Valentine’s Day night for the more body-confident among you!

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 2019 WILL BE CHOC-ABLOCK WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO TAKE ACTION
We’ve been a little witty with the above headline, given that many of us – quite rightly – associate Fairtrade initiatives with much of the chocolate on our shelves here in the UK. However, we’re also making a serious point, in that this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight – which will run from 25th February to 10th March – will give you plenty of chances to assist the Fairtrade Foundation’s efforts to achieve fairer trade for disadvantaged farmers and workers. What’s the big focus of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight? Curiously enough, it’s cocoa! While there are more than 4,500 products on the market that carry the now instantly recognisable FAIRTRADE Mark, ranging from bananas and coffee to grains and even beauty products, Fairtrade chocolate has long been an especially familiar sight in our supermarkets. As the name suggests, Fairtrade is all about making trade fair for producers, including by achieving better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. The Fairtrade initiative seeks to make this possible by setting standards for both companies and the farmers and workers who grow the food we love. An additional sum of money over and above the Fairtrade price, the Fairtrade Premium, goes into a communal fund that workers and farmers can use to improve their social, economic and environmental conditions. This Premium was worth more than £22 million in 30 | IN&AROUND
2016, while the Fairtrade Minimum Price safety net helps to protect over 200,000 farmers from a cruelly volatile market. However, in a sign of just how much more work needs to be done, more than 90% of chocolate bars still don’t yet carry Fairtrade certification. Furthermore, the last two years have seen a catastrophic fall in world cocoa prices, pushing many farmers further into poverty. How can you take action to help producers? There are various ways in which you can help to make a difference for many of the world’s most vulnerable people during this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight. Those include, of course, only buying Fairtrade-certified chocolate, and encouraging others to do so – but there’s also so much more that you can do. You could raise money and awareness for the cause by baking delicious Fairtrade chocolate treats, for example, perhaps as part of a bake-off competition or coffee and cake event. The Fairtrade Foundation is placing a particular emphasis this year on the living and working conditions of women, including those working both in the fields and at home. Indeed, International Women’s Day falls during Fairtrade Fortnight on 8th March, with Mother’s Day coming not long after on 31st March. This presents some great potential focal points for your event, not least as the Fairtrade Foundation is also inviting organisers and attendees to share the best moments with the #shedeserves hashtag. You can find out more about Fairtrade Fortnight, the Fairtrade Foundation and what Fairtrade actually is – in addition to downloading a complete Action Guide – by visiting www.fairtrade.org.uk.

All Tees Valley council leaders backing Mayor’s airport buyout plan
All Tees Valley council leaders backing Mayor’s airport buyout plan Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has taken a significant step forward in his plan to buy Durham Tees Valley Airport, having secured support from all five Tees Valley council leaders for the scheme. This means that the plan, aimed at returning Durham Tees Valley Airport to public ownership, now has the confirmed backing of Darlington Borough Council’s Stephen Harker, Hartlepool Borough Council’s Christopher Akers-Belcher and Stockton Borough Council’s Bob Cook. Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council leader Sue Jeffrey and Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd have also both expressed support for the scheme, despite having also admitted to misgivings. The airport plan had been packaged as part of a 10-year Investment Plan awaiting a vote by the leaders. What will the Mayor’s airport plan involve? Mr Houchen said: “I’m delighted that all five council leaders have decided to put party politics aside and throw their weight behind my plan to save Teesside Airport. “When I first pledged to take our airport back into public ownership, I was widely ridiculed and told it couldn’t be done. “But thanks to the tens of thousands of you who put your faith in me, we are now within reaching distance of taking back control of our airport to secure its future for generations to come. “Together, this will be an airport owned by the people, for the people, that will work in the interests of Tees Valley residents and our local economy.” 34 | IN&AROUND
The airport plan comprises various stages. Those include buying the airport, recruiting a commercial operator by March 2019, attracting a low-cost carrier and a tenfold rise in passenger numbers, 25% of them business passengers, by 2022. That growth should be spurred by the intended additions of 10 routes – 50% of them chartered, 50% scheduled – by 2022. It is hoped that by 2027, a further £421m will be brought into the Tees Valley economy, generating 7,682 jobs. Also on the table is a yearly increase of up to 500 tonnes in freight tonnage by 2023, while Tees Valley residents will be encouraged to take up to 3.41 flights each year – the national average. Reactions to the Investment Plan The 10-year Investment Plan put forward by the Tees Valley Combined Authority, of which Mr Houchen is chairman, has won widespread support from Tees Valley council leaders. Mr Budd noted that the plan “contains many essential and transformative projects and investment proposals”. However, he warned that Middlesbrough Borough Council “have raised very real concerns over the airport deal ... in the face of a serious and worrying lack of information”. He insisted: “It is essential that we – and the public – receive regular progress updates” on the airport scheme. Ms Jeffrey called it “the biggest single progress in the plan that is funded only from our own resources and it has been allocated £75m of devolution cash (£40m to buy the airport and surrounding land, up to £20m to cover operating losses and £15m for improvements).”

VPZ VPZ OFFICALLY OFFICALLY OPENS OPENS IN IN CHESTER CHESTER LE LE STREET STREET VPZ, the UK’s largest retailer for vaping products has officially launched its new store in Chester le Street. The new store which specialises in vaping and alternative tobacco products opened its doors on 70 Front Street on Friday 11th January. VPZ has invested around £50k in the new store and has created in the region of five new jobs in the area. The opening is part of considerable period of expansion for VPZ as it aims to grow its footprint to 300 stores by 2021. Smokers are invited to come into their brand-new store on Front Street, dump their cigarettes, and get their 28day starter kit to make 2019 the year they finally give-up smoking.
On average a smoker of 20 cigarettes a day could also be expected to save over £3,000 a year by simply switching to vaping. Doug Mutter, VPZ Director, said: “We have identified a real demand in the area and we are looking forward to bringing our customers the best range of vaping products in the market, whilst offering great advice and support to help them move towards quitting smoking and keeping them on their journey. VPZ, was recently named the UK’s 24th fastest growing firm in the Sunday Times Virgin Atlantic Top 100.
The starter package contains 28 days’ worth of vaping equipment designed to help smokers take their first steps towards a cigarette free life. Figures from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) have shown around 2.9m people in the UK are currently using e-cigarettes, with Public Health England (PHE) recently reporting that e-cigarettes are at least 95 per cent less harmful than conventional tobacco cigarettes.

A happy 210th birthday to the man who showed that Kentucky ain’t just about chicken...
For this month’s birthday celebrating the ‘great and the good’ here at IN&AROUND, we really are going right to the top – to the 16th President of the United States. Both scholars and the public have consistently ranked Abraham Lincoln as one of the finest US presidents, on account of leading his nation through its greatest moral, constitutional and political crisis. Modest – and even slightly English – beginnings Abraham Lincoln was born on 12th February 1809, as the second child of Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln, in a one-room log cabin on the Sinking Spring Farm near Hodgenville, Kentucky. Intriguingly, in a rather indirect way, we might even be able to claim Lincoln as one of our own here in Britain, given that he was a descendent of Samuel Lincoln, an Englishman who migrated from Hingham, Norfolk, to its namesake of Hingham in Massachusetts in 1638. Fast-forward to 1816, though, and Abraham had moved with his family to southern Indiana. Given the need to work constantly to support his family, the young Lincoln’s formal education was limited to three brief periods in local schools. The eventual president recalled in later life that Indiana was “a wild region, with many bears and other wild animals still in the woods. There I grew up... of course when I came of age I did not know much. Still somehow, I could read, write, and cipher... but that was all.” An incomparable story of American greatness Nonetheless, Lincoln’s rise from these humble circumstances was to be stellar. He went on to serve as a captain in the Black Hawk War, in addition to spending eight years in the Illinois legislature. He 46 | IN&AROUND
also rode the circuit courts for many years, showing the ambition that his law partner described as “a little engine that knew no rest.” He married Mary Todd, a well-to-do Kentucky belle from a slave-holding family, in 1842. 16 years later, he ran against Stephen A. Douglas for Senator, burnishing his national reputation in debates with his opponent, despite losing the vote. In 1860, he gained the Republican nomination for President, ultimately defeating Southern Democratic candidate John C. Breckinridge in the election. However, the prospect of an anti-slavery northerner taking the presidency prompted seven southern states to immediately secede from the Union to form the Confederate States of America, thereby sparking the Civil War. Despite an only brief period of military service himself, Lincoln proved to be a surprisingly effective wartime leader, and by April 1865, a Union victory was near. Tragically, Lincoln would not live to see his vision of Reconstruction realised. On the night of 14th April, the actor and Confederate sympathiser John Wilkes Booth breached the president’s box at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., and shot him pointblank in the back of the head. Lincoln never regained consciousness, dying in the early hours of 15th April 1865. Nonetheless, with his achievements including the January 1863 Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy, as well as the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution that permanently outlawed slavery, few US Presidents will ever be able to claim a legacy as formidable as Lincoln’s.

FILM REVIEW:
Glass
It’s difficult to approach deconstructing M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller without unleashing a couple of spoilers from the two previous installments in the trilogy. Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2016) – both of which you will need to watch to have any appreciation of Glass – introduce us to David Dunn, aka The Overseer; Elijah Price, aka Mr. Glass; and Kevin Wendell Crumb, aka The Horde. In Unbreakable, Price (Samuel L. Jackson) mentors Dunn (Bruce Willis) as he discovers his true potential as a crimefighting protector of people. Mentoring him as he learns that Dunn’s body cannot be damaged, and that he has a sense of when people have done something terrible, Price is secretly his very antithesis; injured easily, with bones of ‘glass’, and capable of committing atrocities on an unthinkable scale. Sixteen years later, Split sees Ken Wendell Crumb’s combined ‘horde’ of 23 multiple personalities (played by James McAvoy) kidnap three young women. They are prey for his most terrifying persona, The Beast, who can actually alter Crumb’s body composition and empowers him with superhuman abilities while his many other egos fight inside him to either serve or betray this terrifying entity. Convoluted enough so far? Glass begins where Split left off. Crumb has escaped, and David Dunn has been alerted to the presence of this new, formidable foe. Price, meanwhile, has spent the last decade or so in a hospital for the criminally insane – setting the scene for the conclusion of this superhero trilogy. However, Glass has already lost a degree of the intrigue developed during Split. Neither David Dunn nor Elijah Price were particularly engaging characters in Unbreakable, which only revealed itself to be a superhero movie during its final moments. Kevin Crumb, however, was a complex and emotionally involving antagonist (or, to be precise, 23 engaging characters in one!) – with his link to the Unbreakable universe withheld, again, until the final scene of the movie. 48 | IN&AROUND
All three characters, though, are soon thrown together in the same hospital, where their superhuman qualities are presented as manifestations of deeply rooted traumas and psychological issues. Glass does broach this ontological theme in an original, refreshing way, posing the question of: “What makes us human, inhuman or even superhuman?” However, whereas McAvoy’s many personas display various phases of struggle and distress, the cast of Unbreakable fail to develop beyond the one-dimensional characters they embodied 19 years ago. During Glass, you find yourself rooting for The Horde’s various personas, Hedwig, Patricia and co – despite the possibility that they could break free at any moment and return to slaughtering innocents in the name of The Beast. Also, you always get the feeling that they will break free. Mr. Glass is far from the meek, immobile patient he has pretended to be (though why he’s waited 19 years to evade capture is unknown), and his latest masterplan for chaos soon presents itself to the audience. How will he use The Horde and The Beast, and will The Overseer be able to stop them? These regular good-vs-evil archetypes are delivered, but it’s where Shyamalan rejects genre convention that Glass really delivers. It is something of an antipode in itself – the dissection of the superhero movie, for people who are bored of superhero movies. Still, it remains anticlimactic at best. Though certainly worth watching if you’ve already seen the first two instalments, Glass feels like the culmination of a trilogy that never really discovered its true potential. There are typical Shyamalan twists to enjoy, but even these fail to deliver an impact beyond underwhelming.

Your One-Stop Shop for Printing in Durham www.jakhq.com
These days, there are a multitude of ways you can create print-ready images, flyers or documents, without even getting out of your chair. Smartphones and free-to-use apps replicate some of the basic functions of design software, and provide the creative-minded with a platform for putting together unique photo albums, social media headers, and, of course, as many memes as you can muster. But, when it comes to print work for your business, it suddenly becomes an entirely different medium. Home printing and touch-screen design software is ideal for personal use, but for marketing, advertising, and commercial purposes, it’s better to seek some expert assistance. Our way (or, we believe, the right way) At Jak HQ, we’ve been producing high-quality printed materials for businesses all over the North East since 2004. The managed print service we provide involves much more than taking your details and adding them to templates (for that, you certainly could manage with just an app or two on your smartphone). Instead, we take the time to get an idea of who you are, what your business is, and how your brand communicates too. Then, we apply a lavish and experienced layer of creativethinking to your ideas, and cook up the ideal concoction of engaging visuals and high quality materials, for ultimate impact. The result though, is not just the quality of the printed materials. It’s also about the level of service we have provided, and the customer who’s been at the heart of all our work. 50 | IN&AROUND
The other way (or, the ‘not for us’ way) Of course, there are plenty of other options available to choose from, just as you will find with any other product or service. Have you ever ordered a birthday card online, and written a printed message for the recipient? The same copy-and-paste process can apply to printing, even when it comes to large format artwork. However, the impact from a ready-to-go printing service is just never the same. When you’re sending the name and vision of your business out into the world, your printed materials should be as original as you are. That reason you had for starting out in what you do? That’s imperative. The USP you’ve strived to deliver? People need to know about it. You can have all your printing completed without ever talking to another person, but you’re almost guaranteed to lose the engaging, human-to-human message at the core of all purchasing decisions. Choose Jak HQ for your next project Based in Chester-le-Street, our team is busy bringing out the emotion in a brand every single day. Our full service design team deliver not only bespoke printed materials, including business stationary, flyers, posters and banners, but engaging digital marketing materials too. We also provide a linguistically gifted copywriting service, and have a team of web developers who create robust, responsive websites for our clients. If you’re looking for a local creative agency to help you communicate more effectively with your customers, whether digitally or directly, then we’re here to talk. Visit our website at jakhq.com.

What’s on
February
The Comedy Store Gala Theatre and Cinema, Durham Since it first opened in London mere weeks after Margaret Thatcher swept to power as British Prime Minister in the spring of 1979, the Comedy Store has proved itself to be one of the leading breeding grounds for comic talent in the UK, helping to kick-start the careers of the likes of John Bishop, Sarah Millican and Eddie Izzard. It’s due back in Durham on 10th February, with tickets priced from £8. However, the line-up will only be confirmed a few weeks in advance, so check www.facebook.com/ComedyStoreDUR for updates.
Durham Record Fair Freeman’s Quay Leisure Centre, Durham The North East’s vinyl, CD and music memorabilia collectors are set to descend once more on Durham on 17th February, albeit in a new location, and now on a Sunday due to popular demand. Add a mere £2 entry fee, and you’ve got even more reason to take your chance to peruse the latest offerings of some of Northern England’s leading sellers.
Free Pass Locomotion, Shildon This free exhibition of textiles, photography and art by Catherine Howard is inspired by Catherine’s father, who was employed at the Shildon Railway Works. The work – which is on display until 8th March at the Locomotion museum on Dale Road Industrial Estate – carries the influences of Catherine’s memories of the open days, the smell of diesel and pretending to drive the trains. The exhibition’s name, meanwhile, refers to the passes that were given to railway workers to enable them to travel for free on the railways.
Professor Brian Cox Live Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle upon Tyne The Mousetrap Sunderland Empire It’s only the longest-running show of any kind in the history of theatre, and it’s back by popular demand at Sunderland Empire from 28th February until 2nd March! This classic Agatha Christie murder mystery play set in a country house cut off by snow opened in London’s West End in 1952, and has quite the twist ending. Book your tickets from £13 at www.atgtickets.com.
Whether you know him best as a professor of particle physics at the University of Manchester or instead as D:Ream’s one-time keyboard player, there’s no question that Brian Cox OBE remains among the bestknown English scientists of recent times. He’ll be back in Newcastle on 9th February, along with comedian Robin Ince, to take audiences to the edge of our current understanding about the origin and evolution of our Solar System and the Universe. Tickets cost from £42, and you can grab some by calling 0844 493 6666 or in person from the Metro Radio Arena Box Office.
Holy Holy featuring Woody Woodmansey and Tony Visconti Tyne Theatre & Opera House, Newcastle upon Tyne The Thin White Duke himself may no longer be with us, but the spirit of the incomparable David Bowie lives on – not least through Holy Holy, the allstar band set to take the stage at Newcastle’s Tyne Theatre & Opera House on 12th February. It consists of Bowie fan and friend Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17 on vocals, together with Bowie drummer Woody Woodmansey and even the great man’s producer on many of his albums, Tony Visconti. Tickets are priced from £33 for this special show featuring Bowie hits from between 1969 and 1973; visit www.eventim.co.uk for more information. 54 | IN&AROUND
