GOINGINSTYLE The pension crisis has spawned a few movies in recent years from “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” to “The Love Punch”, and there’s another title to add to the canon with the release of “Going in Style”. Who’d have thought there’d be a canon about that, but there is – it must be a sign of the times. It’s a scenario we’re all dreading – our pension scheme going belly up, but what would you do if that were the case? That’s the situation this film explores, ably assisted by Director Zach Braff and the stellar cast. Alan Arkin, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine, deliver performances that radiate equal measures of poignancy and comedy throughout. The latter had us laughing in that way that bubbles up from the pit of your stomach, the sort that has you covering your mouth and sinking lower in your seat to suppress 8 | IN&AROUND
it before it erupts out of you. There was laughter rolling over the seats from all corners of the cinema at certain points in this film. The direction and particularly the episodes of physical comedy added a great deal to this film – especially in the shop – I’ll say no more about it - just view it and see. It’s also a surprisingly timely movie, not only for its riff on pensions but for touching on other dilemmas that beset the modern family, from the cost of housing to not seeing enough of those you hold dear and not wanting to be a burden to them either. While it wouldn’t quite be true to say the poignant moments had you reaching for the tissues, the film does make some interesting observations on contemporary life. What’s also notable about
this movie is the attention given to the casting of the supporting roles for there are some standout performances here too. A special mention for Christopher Lloyd for his bumbling portrayal of Milton and Josh Pais as the oh-so-annoying bank employee. Siobhan Fallon Hogan as acerbic waitress Mitzi, who has a sharp tongue, but instils all her actions
“
We laughed a lot! Going in Style is about friendship and family, and if you had seen these four luminaries on set you would have seen how they became a great grioup of friends. It really shows in the films.
Zach Braff

with kindness, gives an engaging performance too. She’s a familiar face, but I just couldn’t work out where from.. ah yes, “New in Town” that’s the one. All in all, this film is “The Usual Suspects” or maybe “Ocean’s Eleven” meets “Driving Miss Daisy” in this heist movie with a heart. You just can’t help being on the side of the good baddies, in though you know you shouldn’t be. Though everyone does deserve a piece of pie, this is a crime caper, so don’t try this at home, but do go along to your local cinema for a lighthearted night out. It’s not the most original or profound movie, but does it need to be? It’s simply good plain fun, and that’s not bad. Though the ending goes exactly where you want and expect it to go, there are a few surprises along the
way in this delicious romp. Most of all this movie reminded me of just what fun it can be to visit the cinema and how good it feels to laugh. So for a dose of a restorative tonic, prescribe yourself a viewing of “Going in Style”.

Whitby
Sometimes after my travels, I just want to sit down and write up my findings, just to be able to “bottle” what I have discovered. I have been to Whitby many times, but there are still undiscovered parts of this fascinating town to explore. Between Newquay Road where I was staying at the Station Inn, and Baxtergate, a main shopping street, there must be a dozen alleyways and yards. Some are through routes wide enough for only one person, some are yards containing cafes or other businesses and some are just dead ends. And the pattern is repeated throughout the town. On my arrival by train it was a fine night, so I decided to catch the last Arriva X4 bus to Sandsend, three miles away, alight at the Hart Inn and walk back along the coast as night fell. I started on the beach, but a combination of narrowing beach, incoming tide and failing light suggested I should climb the path onto the road and over to the cliff top, and I discovered the amazing building known as the Met which is now private apartments with a restaurant and café. The 37 metre vertical cliff lift (not an inclined railway like at Saltburn) looked completely closed up. I continued along the West Cliff to the Whale Bone Arch and the Royal Crescent developed by Railway King George Hudson who was bankrupted before its completion. And so down the Khyber Pass, named after the Afghan 12 | IN&AROUND
one, to the Fish Quay and along the Esk river side to the Inn. Inevitable, you may say, that I chose the Station Inn, opposite Whitby’s railway station, for my one night stay on a Sunday evening. Since they do not have a kitchen, the deal is room only, but there are plenty of places to find breakfast, including the Wetherspoon’s Angel Inn nearby. On Sunday night I had noticed their enticing tables outside, but a team of scaffolders on the Monday morning had covered the entire frontage. I was amazed they had erected so much metal and timber in a short while.

The morning train had disgorged its usual load of children from the Esk Valley villages who attend Caedmon College, named after the Northumbrian poet, and arrive on the first train from Middlesbrough at 0837. Indeed the whole timetable on the Esk Valley line is predicated upon the needs of schoolchildren, who return from Whitby at 1559. There are four round trips from Middlesbrough, with connections further afield. On Sundays there are direct trains from Bishop Auckland and Darlington and it was the 1550 from Darlington to Whitby which I took on Sunday 2 April, the first day of the season that runs until November.
The RNLI Museum is interesting, and there’s a whole museum devoted to Captain Cook on Grape Lane, turn right at the Dolphin pub just over the bridge. 199 steps take you up to the Abbey and St. Mary’s Church, but don’t bother with the dated and appallingly rated Dracula exhibition on Marine Parade which will have you out the back exit in three minutes. Even at £3 it’s not worth it and yet with some re-engineering using modern technology it could be really scary again. Invest your £3 instead on the Yellow Boats like Summer Queen which over a trip out into the bay, or for a more heritage feel try former RNLI lifeboat Mary Ann Hepworth which was on station from 1938 to 1974 and now also offers pleasure trips. There’s loads of accommodation options in Whitby, and going by train enhances the adventure.

SWEET!
A short history of County Durham confectionery
S
o, how did you enjoy Easter? Okay, you probably spent it scoffing plenty of chocolate. No, that’s not meant as a personal slight, honest – it’s not like we didn’t do the same. In fact, we went a step further and made the trek to Beamish Museum. There, you can not only buy the delectable brown stuff and other sweet treats in vintage-style packaging, but even see them getting made… or more to the point, how they were made in the 1900s. Still, it’s just a glimpse into our area’s sweet history. Chocolate heaven awaits at Beamish If you’re a history fan with a sweet tooth, there are many great reasons to head to Beamish. Once you’re at the museum, head to the 1900s Town, as the museum calls it in its publicity materials, and to the shop there called Jubilee Confectioners. Specially built to resemble the kind of sweet shop that you would have seen in an Edwardian town, it opened on the site in 1994 and today sells confectionery goodies including chocolate, toffee and sweets. As you approach the shop, you might notice the signs advertising chocolate from Rowntree and Fry, two well-known York-based chocolate-makers of the 1900s. The name Rowntree is, of course, still commonly used to promote Fruit Pastilles and Fruit Gums, two products made by Rowntree before the Swiss company Nestlé acquired it in 1988. However, back in the 1900s, chocolate from Rowntree and Fry – which merged with Cadbury in 1919 – was expensive. When County Durham was… Candy Durham! During the early 20th century, there were also sweets made in County Durham itself. Operating in the cathedral city of Durham was J Vose, a company making mint rock advertised as “invaluable to mental 20 | IN&AROUND
as well as physical workers”. There was also, based in Chester-le-Street, the sweet-maker George W Horner and Co. Perhaps that company’s best-known product was Dainty Dinah toffee, marketed with the painted image of a young, dark-haired, bonnetwearing Edwardian woman. The 1920s provided genuine “glory days” for Horner. Depots opened in various places, including Stockton and Berwick, to help extend the reach of his sweets. Meanwhile, a 106-feet-tall chimney, on which were the words “Horner” and “Dainty Dinah Toffee”, was built at the Chester-le-Street factory. Upon the chimney’s top was a 300kg painted bust of that iconic – if apparently fictional – lady herself, the so-called Dainty Dinah. Additional lines were added at the factory in the 1930s. An increasingly distant past… that can still be enjoyed The success of the company George W Horner wasn’t to last much longer, however. Horner himself died in 1947, leaving his son Kenneth to inherit the business. Following increased competition from rival confectionery producers, the company went into receivership in 1960 before closing the following year. The factory site was demolished in the 1980s; still, at Beamish today, there remain remnants from County Durham’s sweet past. In fact, sweet rollers – rollers used to make sweets in various shapes – from Hartlepool and Bournmoor sites are in the museum’s impressive collection.

May’s Recipe
Courtesy of Riverford Organic Farmers
Healthy lemon chicken and spinach curry In May our UK Riverford farms see a great transition from the winter root vegetable crops to the first of the new season veg with asparagus, spinach and purple sprouting broccoli replacing parsnips, carrots and swede. What better than to give you a fantastic recipe to make the most of the new season’s offerings.
Ingredients 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 tsp coriander seeds 1 tbsp sunflower, light olive or coconut oil, plus a little extra if necessary 600g diced chicken (leg, thigh or breast) 1 large or 2 small onions, finely sliced 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped, crushed or grated 5cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped or grated 1–2 fresh chillies, finely chopped (add the seeds too if you like it hot) 1 tsp turmeric 10 cardamom pods juice of 2–3 lemons, depending on size 400ml vegetable or chicken stock 300g spinach, tough stalks removed and leaves roughly chopped if large large handful of coriander, roughly chopped salt and black pepper
This is a healthy curry with no creamy sauce which freezes really well. A pile of basmati rice and a good dollop of yoghurt will make it into a meal.
Method Lightly toast the cumin and coriander seeds in a dry frying pan until you just start to smell their aroma, then grind them with a pestle and mortar. Heat the oil in a large, heavy-based pan.
minutes, stirring now and then, until soft. Add the garlic, ginger, chillies and all the ground spices and fry, stirring, for another 2 minutes. Return the chicken to the pan with the lemon juice and stock.
Add the chicken pieces and fry over a high heat, turning once, until golden brown. (Don’t overcrowd the pan – cook in batches if you need to.) Transfer the chicken to a plate.
Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes or so, until the chicken is cooked through. Stir in the spinach and let it wilt for just a minute or two before seasoning and stirring in the chopped coriander.
Add the onion to the pan with a splash more oil if needed. Fry gently for 10

Competition Time
Attention LEGO® fans! Life Science Centre in Newcastle-upon-Tyne is currently hosting not one, but two LEGO® brick exhibitions, featuring intricate models made from your favourite little bricks. Brick History is a collection of over 50 models created by master LEGO builder Warren Elsmore and his team. They depict the most pivotal moments in human history, from the beginning of life in the pre-historic era right through to the inauguration of Barack Obama, via the extinction of the dinosaurs! Accompanying Brick History is Life’s second LEGO® brick exhibition, North East LEGO® Landmarks, created by North East native and architectural photographer, Steve Mayes. The exhibition features some of the best known landmarks in the North East, including the Baltic, The Angel of the North, St James’ Park and a specially-commissioned model of the International Centre for Life – home of Life Science Centre – which is on display for the very first time. Visitors will need to be quick in order to catch these LEGO® brick creations in all of their glory. The final day to visit the exhibitions is Sunday 14 May 2017. The Biscuit Factory Spring Exhibition 2017 The snowdrops are up and the birds are chattering, which must mean one thing– it’s time for the spring exhibition at The Biscuit Factory. I don’t mind admitting that the last time I visited it turned into an expensive business - albeit made in 10 extremely reasonable interestfree payments. I circled the gallery and came back to the same spot, before finding myself at the till having the object of my affections wrapped to take home. How did it happen? Perhaps that’s what good art does - it gets under your skin, it tugs at your heart and you just can’t leave it. You might not even know why, but it does, and at the very least you sit there in contemplation for a while, before moving on. But I digress, the headline artist Steven Lindsay is not only skilled, but also contemplative and serene, with a dash of the absurd thrown in too – I don’t know how he does it, but he does. It’s a funny mixture – but it works. I am in bewildered awe of these paintings, in their sense of space and isolation; there is a touch of (the Dutch painter of subdued portraits and interiors) Vilhelm Hammershøi about them. Tour the rest of the exhibition and you’ll see a treasure trove of contemporary art and craft. The jewel-like colours of Fiona Sturrock and textile artist Helen Edwards stand out, joyful, adept and uplifting. For enthusiasts of mid-century chic, Carol Saunderson’s abstract landscapes are likely to strike a chord. The painterly landscapes of Emerson Mayes topped my list, but how can something be both energetic 36 | IN&AROUND
and soothing too? I know not, it is a conundrum. Visit and you’ll see what I mean. Colour is the element that most attracts me to an artwork. Perusing the ceramics, Barry Stedman’s and Jill Holland’s work catch my eye, while Gemma Truman’s glass Kiota Michozi vases strike an exquisite note. Yet the artworks that leave the deepest impression are those exuding serenity, solitude, absence and vulnerability. Take Steven Lindsay’s Pilgrims or Dionne Swift’s pared down landscapes, for instance. I’d take home Sam Knowles’ paper mâché Adrift right now if I wasn’t afraid I’d squash it. Peter Hallam’s Tea for Two is a standout and for a painting that took five years to paint, it’s a steal. For an artist known for his distinctive figures (the scary beady eyed psychiatrist is difficult to forget), I’m surprised this one leaves such an impression – but it does. In fact, looking at it, I feel my heart squeeze. Why? Is it the absence of the figures or the fact that there are two pots and not one pot being shared? I don’t know – but I keep coming back to it. Potter, wander, contemplate the work on show, indulge in a scoop of handmade ice cream and enjoy the Newcastle skyline. Just try it and see. The Biscuit Factory is located on Stoddart Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, and is open seven days a week. Find out more at www.thebiscuitfactory.com or ring 0191 261 1103.
Ellen Rossiter Copywriter
I wanted the paintings to have a timelessness, vulnerability and ‘elsewhere’ quality to them. The collection at The Biscuit Factory contains a broad spectrum of subject matter, which I hope will give the viewer an insight into the variety of work that I paint and the type of marks that I make on canvas. Steven Lindsay

Just imagine: a husband-and-wife team take their successful British sitcom to the United States, only for it to be mangled and warped by the networks Stateside. Sounds pretty far-fetched, doesn’t it? We suspect that you might detect our sarcasm. Anyway, it’s fair to say that the simple premise of this award-winning comedy series - together with the acting talents of central trio Stephen Mangan, Tamsin Greig and Matt LeBlanc - has helped to make it a big critical hit since its 2011 debut.
WHAT’S ON TV
Alas, all fine things must come to an end, and the fifth series - to air on these shores on BBC Two on a date unconfirmed as IN&AROUND headed to press - will be the last. If you haven’t yet tasted the comedic magic of the show that won LeBlanc a Golden Globe Award as Best Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy, why not take your chance now?
House of Cards
The American political drama adapted from the BBC’s 1990 mini-series of the same name has been thrilling audiences on Netflix with its tales of twofaced backstabbing and political intrigue since the first-season premiere in 2013. The series returns for its fifth season at 8am on 30th May, once again starring Kevin Spacey as Francis J. “Frank” Underwood. The Democrat from South Carolina’s 5th congressional district was House Majority Whip in season one, but has since risen 38 | IN&AROUND
through the ranks to become 46th President of the United States, and we can’t wait to see what we are sure will be another set of tour de force performances from the Usual Suspects and American Beauty star. Spacey has been supported throughout the seasons by such other superlative talents as Robin Wright, Michael Kelly and Kate Mara, and is joined for the latest season by Patricia Clarkson (Six Feet Under, The Elephant Man) and Campbell Scott (The Amazing Spider-Man).
