Welcome... to the January issue of IN&AROUND! Well, it’s the New Year, and you all know what that means – New Year resolutions to get fit that you are guaranteed to have abandoned by February! Hey, we don’t mean to be depressing, but it’s sort of inevitable, isn’t it... Much has also changed in the political world since IN&AROUND’s December issue, which is why we’ve reflected once more on what the latest development – Theresa May’s phase-one ‘deal’ with the EU – is likely to mean for the Brexit we end up with. Head to page 18 for that one. But if you’re sick of hearing about the twists and turns of Number 10, you might be interested in reading our verdict on the number one big-screen blockbuster that everyone – even the porgs – has been talking about. That’s right: it’s our review, on pages 10-11, of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Once again, our advertisers are the people who effectively make IN&AROUND possible, so we can’t thank them enough! If you would like to join them, call us on 0191 388 2698, or send us an email via sales@inandaroundmag.co.uk. JOHN LUMLEY: A CHESTER-LE-STREET CONSTANT IN TUDOR AND STUART HISTORY

A Look Back

In 1603, one of the most significant handovers of power in English political history occurred when Queen Elizabeth I died childless – leaving King James VI of Scotland to be welcomed to the English throne, too. It was a major step towards England and Scotland eventually cementing their union as the single state of Great Britain. One North East heavyweight whose years of prominence spanned the Tudor and Stuart eras was the aristocrat John Lumley.

JOHN LUMLEY

A life unfolding to a backdrop of political upheaval It is thought that John Lumley was born around 1533. That year, Henry VIII was ruling as the second English monarch of the Tudor dynasty and, only a few years earlier, had triggered the tumultuous English Reformation to sever England’s ties with Rome. So, something of the 16th-century equivalent of Brexit, you could say – and while the political rupture permitted Henry to remarry in accordance with his wishes, he was distraught that his new marriage gave him yet another daughter. That daughter, born in 1533, would eventually become Elizabeth I – and rule with a success that would largely scotch her father’s concerns about the impracticality of a female monarch. Lumley, too, rose from obscurity like a phoenix, having not inherited the honours of his grandfather – also called John Lumley – because his own father, 6 | IN&AROUND

George Lumley, had been attainted for participating in the Yorkshirebased, anti-Tudor uprising the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536. However, in 1547, an Act of Parliament handed the younger John Lumley “the name, dignity, state and pre-eminence of a Baron of the Realm”. This new position enabled him to actively participate in parliamentary affairs from 5 October 1553, when Queen Mary I had recently started her reign in England, until 5 November 1605, shortly after the beginning of King James I’s tenure. He attended Mary’s coronation and was a Commissioner of Claims at the coronations of Elizabeth and James. A castle fit for a king’s visit John Lumley’s seat was Lumley Castle, which was built in the 14th century and still stands in Chesterle-Street today as a hotel and Grade I listed building. John Lumley spent much time improving the castle; he

altered its windows to allow more light to enter and gave the great hall both a new fireplace and a blackand-white marble lavabo featuring the image of a pelican, which is also on the Lumley coat of arms. He also placed 14 effigies in Chester-leStreet’s church, where they remain – although it is doubtful that they all depict Lumley ancestors as John claimed. Nonetheless, it would have been an undoubted source of pride for him when, on 13 April 1603, he welcomed a very special visitor to Lumley Castle: King James! Following Elizabeth’s death that year, the king had embarked on a journey from Edinburgh to London, where he would take the English throne as James I. Before then, though, he briefly stopped at Lumley Castle – which, today, has a hotel room called the King James Suite in honour of this royal visit six years before John’s death.

FILM REVIEW

A

s hugely acclaimed as Star Wars: The Force Awakens was in its revival of the intergalactic franchise in 2015, there remained a common cause of complaint among its few detractors. For all of its new characters, it remained very reminiscent of the very first Star Wars film that hit cinemas way back in 1977. There was a risk that those charges of a derivative narrative would only strengthen if the series continued trading on nostalgia; something clearly had to give. New director decides to Rian in the nostalgia In light of this, it seems particularly appropriate that, to build on the foundations The Force Awakens laid for the “sequel trilogy”, Lucasfilm handed the directorial reins to Rian Johnson. Much better known for helming cult classics rather than blockbusters, Johnson actually hasn’t just built on foundations - he has also blown some right apart. Returning characters have been separated across entirely different plot strands, while there are new additions posing admirably daring risks. Fleeting though it was, Mark Hamill’s return as Luke Skywalker in The Force Awakens felt like a milestone moment. Hamill’s role is hugely expanded in The Last Jedi, in which he plays a Jedi Master who has retreated to the planet Ahch-To. That’s a sore point with Rey, the Forcesensitive scavenger portrayed by Daisy Ridley. Rey wants him to join the Resistance’s struggle against the First Order, a military dictatorship intent on taking over the galaxy.

“THE SCI-FI SEQUEL WILL INSPIRE KIDS 30 YEARS FROM NOW TO REINTRODUCE IT TO AWESTRUCK AUDIENCES”

PLEASE MENTION IN&AROUND WHEN CONTACTING ADVERTISERS

If The Force Awakens largely belonged to Rey and Finn, John Boyega’s reformed stormtrooper, it would be fair to say that The Last Jedi has a much stronger focus on Rey’s developing partnership with Luke. He ultimately agrees to take Rey under his wing - no, not an X-wing, though the film does have some surprising instances of humour - and starts helping her to hone her skills with the Force. There’s light(saber) at the end of the tunnel Throughout The Last Jedi, a particular theme is repeatedly put forward: that of letting go of the past and embracing the future, however painful the process may be. It’s easy to believe that Johnson has taken the same attitude in crafting the film itself. If early reports and

reviews have given you the impression that The Last Jedi is a bleak film, you wouldn’t be mistaken; many characters lose friends, family and ideals. Their confidence and hope also falter. Still, Johnson hasn’t lost sight of the fact that this is fundamentally a Star Wars movie. So, he packs in thrilling chases, dogfights and, of course, lightsaber clashes - including possibly the most exhilarating yet seen in a Star Wars instalment. For some fans, relinquishing their attachment to much-loved staples of the franchise could cause much anguish. However, Johnson has done much to set up what, on the strength of this film, could be a truly spectacular Episode IX.

Easy to Overlook Gems

Rockliffe Hall, Hurworth-on-Tees In October, The Sunday Times named the five-star luxury retreat Rockliffe Hall one of Britain’s best hotels. It’s an impressive accolade for the golf and spa hotel, attractions of which that were singled out for praise by The Sunday Times included the “enormous spa” and 65-foot indoor pool. The hotel was also deemed delightfully child-friendly, particularly due to a garden area that features water jets, log cabins and pool tables. On-site restaurant The Orangery also came in for praise. In fact, it has been handed four AA Rosettes – an achievement that has eluded every restaurant of all other English resorts of the same kind. The building of Rockliffe Hall also provides the backdrop to the lengthiest world-class golf course in the North East. All of these plaudits are undoubtedly noteworthy given that Rockliffe Hall, located in Hurworth-on-Tees near Darlington, could be considered a relatively new establishment; it opened in its current form as a prestige hotel in 2009. Still, the building’s history stretches back centuries. The beginning of Rockliffe Hall’s development can be traced right back to 1774, when the original plans were made. The hall and estate began physically forming in the early 19th century and became occupied by the Surtees family. In 1851, the Blackhouse family took over the site – parts of which, in 1971, served as scenery in the iconic Michael Caine film Get Carter. Rockliffe Hall, you’re only supposed to blow... us away with how good you are. Mission accomplished! Hang on, lads; I’ve got a great idea…

Mining Art Gallery, Bishop Auckland County Durham’s once-buoyant mining industry might have gradually shifted from memory into history over the last few decades, but local people can now enjoy an accurate – and, it should be said, rare – insight into what day-to-day life as a County Durham miner was really like. That’s because this insight is provided by over 420 art pieces that were crafted by miners themselves and now have a permanent home in the Mining Art Gallery that opened in Bishop Auckland in October. 14 | IN&AROUND

The Mining Art Gallery is in the town’s market place, where it occupies what used to be a bank building. The gallery’s exhibits largely comprise the Gemini Collection of Mining Art, accumulated over two decades by Dr Robert McManners and Gillian Wales, who shared a fascination with art depicting mining and miners’ communities. Esteemed artists with work represented here include Tom McGuinness and Norman Cornish, but it isn’t just art enthusiasts who should be excited.

The gallery even recently got a thumbsup from Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys. In mid-November, the synthpop singer, who has a home in County Durham, tweeted that he had just paid a visit to the Mining Art Gallery, which he said was “excellent” and “shows the artwork of coalminers who vividly depicted their hard and often dangerous lives.” That’s a fitting taster of a gallery that we would further detail… if it wouldn’t ruin the surprise that you could enjoy by visiting for yourself.

Politics update So, what kind of Brexit are we actually likely to end up with? Yes, yes, we realise here at IN&AROUND that you might be getting a little bored by now of the relentless coverage and discussion of the UK’s impending departure from the EU. Alas, we do have to return to the subject - not least because of the recent ‘breakthrough’ deal between the UK and the EU that signalled a go-ahead for what has been described as the ‘second phase’ of talks.

Are we headed firmly towards a ‘soft Brexit’? This was certainly the conclusion made by many observers as details filtered through of the crucial 8th December deal. Jonathan Lis of Prospect magazine was among them, declaring that “hard Brexit is dead. It is no more; it has ceased to be; it is an ex-hard Brexit. Today’s deal on the first phase of withdrawal is the final nail in the coffin for the government’s attempts to leave the single market and customs union.” In justifying his stance, Lis specifically referenced paragraph 49 of the deal document, which stated that “in the absence of agreed solutions, the United Kingdom will maintain full alignment with those rules of the Internal Market and the Customs Union which, now or in the future, support North-South cooperation... and the protection of the 1998 [Good Friday] Agreement.” That “now or in the future” wording would seem to be especially crucial, indicating that efforts to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland effectively necessitate continued membership of both the single market and the customs union. Was it always the case, then, that any kind of ‘hard Brexit’ was simply impractical and unrealistic? Or does the current makeup of May’s cabinet - at the time of writing, it consisted of 15 MPs who supported last year’s Remain campaign, and only five Leavers 18 | IN&AROUND

- give us a few clues that a ‘hard Brexit’ could still be possible, if only the government’s heart was in it?

Some Brexiters are still pinning their hopes on an alternative route Talking to the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show in December, one of those Leave-backing cabinet members - the Secretary of State for Leaving the European Union, David Davis - said that “the odds of a WTO (World Trade Organization) or no-deal scenario have dropped dramatically”. He said that his team was seeking a deal that could be best described as a “Canada plus plus” arrangement, incorporating the best elements of agreements already reached with such countries as Canada, Japan and South Korea, while adding services of key importance to the British economy. Some Conservative backbenchers, however, have been taking a very different tone. They include Peter Bone, who told Sky News that “the real issue is when we get to the spring of next year... if it’s clear that there is not going to be a [trade] deal, which is actually what I think will happen - at that stage we have to say we are going to come out - there isn’t going to be a deal.” Meanwhile, Jacob Rees-Mogg - who many have backed as a potential successor to May - has said that “what [the initial deal] shows is that we’ve offered the EU a huge pot of money and if we don’t get what we want, the Government must show it is willing to walk away.” It would seem that there is still much to play for, then, as the crucial second phase of the Brexit talks loom. What are your own thoughts on how things will go? Let us know here at IN&AROUND!

TELL2, PROTECT MANY: HOW TO TACKLE FRAUD THIS YEAR Fraud and cybercrime account for half of ALL crime in England and Wales, and the proceeds of these crimes are helping to fund other criminality like child exploitation, human trafficking and terrorism. With the likes of identity theft, internet fraud and digital blackmail now more prevalent than ever, a little knowhow can go a long way to keeping you and your hard-earned cash safe. Tony Murray is a Durham Constabulary officer and awardwinning fraud and cybercrime prevention expert seconded to City of London Police National Co-Ordinators Office. To lead you safely into 2018, here’s his best advice for tackling fraud. -----------------------------------------------------I’ve been dealing with fraud and economic crime on a daily basis for seven years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the key to beating it is through education. To know how to beat it, you need to know how it works. There are FIVE key routes that fraudsters take to get into our homes and lives: • The Home Telephone. Be wary of any unsolicited contact from callers purporting to be businesses. Hang up and take five minutes to verify the phone number via trusted means. Don’t call back right away! Fraudsters can keep a phone line open for up to 10 seconds, and can even spoof the caller ID display to read as any genuine number. • The Internet. Keep your computer and anti-virus software up-to-date, and don’t use the same password for every account. If a fraudster knows one, make sure they don’t know them all.

can fake contact names and even hijack existing message threads with people you know and trust. • The Doorstep. Not expecting visitors? Don’t let them in, even if they claim to be from a trusted source. Call their office, verify them, and rearrange another visit. • The Letterbox. Junk mail is exactly that – junk. Verify any unsolicited letter that asks for details or money with a number you know not given in the letter. Take the time to verify who you’re talking to or dealing with, even if you think it’s a waste of time. Choose security over convenience, and if you really want to hit fraud where it hurts, tell your friends to do the same. The #Tell2 campaign, which I’ve spearheaded on Twitter since 2016, takes that idea and runs with it. To protect countless potential victims, I’m encouraging each one of you to share this knowledge with two other people. An unbroken chain of 26 tell2’ers would reach over 67 million people – more than the entire UK population.

#Tell2, protect many. Remember, beating fraud isn’t just about keeping your identity safe. It’s about cutting off the funds that are fuelling serious and organised crime locally, nationally and internationally. How about a different sort of New Year’s Resolution for 2018? This year, let’s each do our bit to stamp out fraud.

What’s on in the North East Dave Spikey: Juggling On A Motorbike, Gala Theatre, Durham Dave Spikey has been a real northern English favourite for what feels like forever now - yet, he had already been working in the NHS for 19 years as a biomedical scientist when, in 1987, someone suggested to him that he was funny enough to be a comedian. It might be because of that comment that we’ve been chuckling along with the Lancashire native for an incredible three decades since. It’s been quite the journey for the man born David Gordon Bramwell, including being named Best Newcomer at the British Comedy Awards in the early ‘90s, before going on to co-write and star in Phoenix Nights and write Dead Man Weds, in which he also co-starred with Johnny Vegas. He was also one of the team captains on the first four series of the comedy panel show 8 Out of 10 Cats. Don’t miss your chance to see the man described by Time Out as “one of the finest raconteurs around” at 7:30pm on Thursday 25th January at the Gala Theatre, Durham. Tickets are priced at £16.50 and can be purchased from www. galadurham.co.uk.

Strictly Come Dancing Live 2018, Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle If the celebrities and professional dancers on the latest season of the BBC’s ballroom juggernaut - including the likes of comedian Susan Calman and double Paralympics champion Jonnie Peacock - have been leaving you feeling all ‘danced up’, you can rest assured that the magic isn’t yet gone for another year. As a matter of fact, it’s coming all the way to the North East, with three supersized spectacular arena shows set to hit Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena on Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th January. The Tuesday event will take place at 7:30pm, while two shows are scheduled for the following day, at 2:30pm and 7:30pm. Tickets are priced from £35 for all three performances, and can be booked at eventim.co.uk, or by calling the ticket hotline on 0844 249 1000. It’s already been confirmed that Calman and Peacock will take to the stage, while the fabulous Strictly Judges Craig Revel Horwood, Bruno Tonioli and Darcey Bussell will also all appear, with 14th-series winner Ore Oduba serving as host.

Shrek the Musical, Sunderland Empire Inspired by the 2001 computer-animated fantasy film and William Steig’s 1990 fairytale picture book on which it was loosely based, Shrek the Musical has seen astounding success across the globe since its trial run in Seattle and original Broadway production in 2008. It’s therefore no surprise to us here at IN&AROUND that the allsinging, all-dancing musical comedy is making a much-anticipated return to the North East. However, with a mere two-week run at Sunderland Empire set to commence from Wednesday 31st January, now is definitely the time to get booking. Join the unlikely eponymous hero and his loyal steed Donkey as they embark on a quest to rescue the beautiful, albeit slightly temperamental, Princess Fiona from a fire-breathing, love-sick dragon. Purchase tickets from www.atgtickets.com, paying between £17.50 and £52.50, plus a £2.85 transaction fee. 26 | IN&AROUND

Places To Go...

BUXTON, Derbyshire

Buxton was developed as a spa town to rival Bath in the south, in one of the highest market towns in England. Indeed, it’s a toss-up between Alston in Cumbria and Buxton as to which is the higher, both being about 1,000 feet above sea level. But you can no longer reach Alston by rail, whilst Buxton is linked to Manchester by a regular diesel service. I arrived in Buxton for a one night stay, and I cannot recall a visit researching for these articles where it rained so much. It rained when I arrived, all evening, and all morning until I went home. The Pavilion Gardens looked very impressive, but it was all very damp. Don’t let me put you off, though. The architecture is stunning and the Crescent is being redeveloped at the moment into a new five star hotel which will update this fashionable Georgian spa town into, arguably, the finest in England. William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire was responsible for the original spa buildings between 1780 and 1789, well before the railway arrived in 1863. Two railway lines serving the town opened within two weeks of each other and had their opening ceremonies on the same day. A few years later in 1868, the Palace Hotel opened adjacent to the station to cater for visitors. It has recently changed hands and is now in the control of Britannia Hotels, whose company motto might as well be “caveat emptor” – let the buyer beware. I walked down a rarely used footpath down to the back of the hotel and had a poke about at the back before emerging into a service yard with, thankfully, 28 | IN&AROUND

an open gate to get out. The public areas looked inviting and attractive, but it’s up in the 122 rooms that some of the bad experiences occur. I had chosen to stay in the Old Hall Hotel (opposite the exquisite Opera House designed by Frank Matcham), which was excellent, and not much more expensive. The Old Hall was occupied several times by Mary, Queen of Scots, from 1573 onwards until 1584 who (not being a well lady), came to take the waters. The thermal mineral water comes out at a spring at a constant temperature of 28°C and is piped to St Anne’s Well in the town, sometimes known as the Tuscany of the North. Also worth seeing is Poole’s Cavern, a limestone show cavern a mile from the town centre. You are invited to take a Journey beneath the earth with expert guides, to explore the vast limestone caverns and see how crystal stalactites have lined the chambers over millions of years. Thereafter, stroll though beautiful woodland trails to a panoramic Peak District hilltop viewpoint.

TRAVEL I was pleased to see the attraction was open through the winter 10am-4pm, with tours at weekends every 20 minutes, and during the week at 10:30, 12:30 & 2:30. More, of course, in the summer. Outside the Opera House is a pick-up point for the little red “Victorian” tram which carries eight tourists at a time around the town centre and nearby attractions. If it looks rather like a milk float, that’s because it is. On the north side is the huge Devonshire Dome, bigger than St. Paul’s Cathedral dome, which is now used by the University of Derby as part of their campus in the town. It is both massive and unsupported, and its café would be a good place to stop for a coffee. Buxton has a compact town centre, with the railway station to the north, with an hourly service to Manchester and trains home to the north east.

WHAT’S ON TV

Harry Hill’s Tea Time, Sky1 The Simpsons, Sky1 For many years, there’s been at least a perception that one of the undoubted greatest television comedies of all time is past its best. The last truly classic season was series 10, so many critics say. Plus, how can Matt Groening and co possibly hope to get anything from such over-familiar characters as Bart, Homer and Marge that we haven’t seen many times before? It’s astonishing to think that The Simpsons is now entering its 29th season. However, such longevity can probably be largely attributed to the sheer durability of a show that still manages to throw up new and interesting surprises, and a few chuckles along the way.

While the one-time physician does have a fall-back option in the event that his entertainment career ever flounders - given that he is, after all, still registered on the General Medical Council’s list of Registered Medical Practitioners - we suspect that it isn’t something the funnyman is going to have to fret about anytime soon.

In any case, the venerable crime drama series has come a long way since its earliest days, when it was Amanda Burton who starred as the primary character Dr Sam Ryan. Since her eighth-series departure, the programme has featured more of an ensemble cast, presently consisting of Emilia Fox, David Caves, Liz Carr and Richard Lintern.

As a matter of fact, last year saw him build on the success of the long-lived Harry Hill’s TV Burp with the debut of another madcap entertainment series, Harry Hill’s Tea Time. It saw him welcome guests to a spoof comedy kitchen and ask them to cook bizarre things, with Guardian reviewer Alexi Duggins declaring that Hill was “back to what he does best”. With the first season’s guests having included Paul Hollywood, Joey Essex, Gok Wan, Martin Kemp and Jason Donovan, it’s fair to say that the new series will need to work hard to match its star power - but we don’t doubt that Hill will serve up another delicious smorgasbord of cooking-related chaos.

While we didn’t yet have an exact date for the show’s return as the magazine headed to press, the pattern of the last few series’ broadcast dates suggests the first few days of January - so be sure to keep an eye out.

Have your eggs and spoons at the ready from 8:30pm on 2nd January on Sky1.

Key changes for this season include the departure of long-time Simpsons score composer Alf Clausen, with the show switching from a live orchestrated score to a produced score by Bleeding Fingers Music. Also expect guest appearances from the likes of Norman Lear, Martin Short and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau when the season debuts in the UK on Sky1 on a yet-undetermined date.

Silent Witness, BBC One Not everyone is convinced of the wisdom of Silent Witness - which first aired way back in 1996 - returning for a 21st season, with Radio Times TV editor Alison Graham having declared it “too silly to live” on account of the improbable role it gives pathologists in the investigation of crimes. Nonetheless, it’s difficult to argue with viewer figures that consistently top six million - and who are we to do so here at IN&AROUND?

THE SCANDAL OF PAYING FOR CARE HOME FEES! Thousands of people are having to pay for their relatives Care Home when they should be receiving the care fee from the NHS. This is true and is actually the law. If a person has a primary health need that needs continual care needs, then it is the duty of the NHS to provide that service completely free of charge. This is true regardless of the myths and lies that are continually perpetuated from certain sources. The 5 Biggest Myths About Care Home Fees. 1). All care is means tested, and if you have a house, you always have to pay. NOT TRUE:- The decision on whether you have to pay for your health needs does not depend on whether you have a house, it depends on your HEALTH and CARE NEEDS.

2). If you have savings over £23,350, you always have to pay for care. NOT TRUE:- The decision does NOT depend on your savings, it depends on your HEALTH and CARE NEEDS. 3). It’s not worth applying if you only have Dementia as NHS funding is dependent on the patient having several needs. NOT TRUE:- NHS funding is NOT affiliated to certain illnesses or conditions. It is purely based on the NEEDS of a person. Someone could have multiple illnesses and not be awarded funding, whereas someone could have one illness/ condition and be awarded full costs. 4). You can only get NHS funding if you can’t swallow. NOT TRUE:- This is a particularly nasty lie that is now being circulated. NHS funding is about NEEDS, and NOT any specific condition.

Do you want to know more? If so, please contact Care Aid North East on 01429 838 121 and ask for Hugh. You will be given FREE advice and guidance on whether you should go forward and ask for an assessment for your loved one.

5). We can’t get funding as we have been paying for over a year. NOT TRUE:- Whether you are currently paying or not, your loved one has THE RIGHT to be assessed for funding, but invariably this does not happen in the vast majority of cases. THAT’S RIGHT. IT IS YOUR LEGAL RIGHT TO ASK FOR AN ASSESSMENT FOR NHS FUNDING. DO NOT BE PUT OFF BY THE DESIGNER STORIES FROM CERTAIN BODIES TELLING YOU THAT YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME. REMEMBER: IF YOUR RELATIVE HAS A PRIMARY HEALTH NEED THAT REQUIRES CONTINUAL CARING, THEN YOU ARE ENTITLED BY LAW TO ACCESS THIS FUNDING.
