ISSUE 166 March 2019
READ ONLINE AT: www.inandaroundmag.co.uk
Welcome
Why Advertise?
to the March issue of IN&AROUND!
When it comes to growing your business, promotion is everything. At IN&AROUND Magazine, we offer a range of advertising packages that put your brand in front of thousands of potential customers.
This month may coincide with the start of spring, but it can also represent so much else when you get ‘in and around’ County Durham with a little help from IN&AROUND!
Our free magazine is delivered to over 20,000 homes and businesses across Chester-leStreet, Derwentside and Durham every month – and our readership continues to grow. With solutions to suit all budgets and requirements, from quarter pages to front page ads, we can help you make an impact. What’s more, with every order, we offer a complimentary design service to ensure that your messages are delivered in the most attractive and eyecatching manner possible.
Mind you, you might fancy a trip to somewhere slightly further afield than our region now that the weather is picking up, such as Kendal in Cumbria, which is the subject of our regular contributor Alex Nelson’s latest feature on page 28. Or if a cinema trip rather closer to home is what most appeals, why not go and see The Lego Movie 2? Our reviewer Craig Lenaghan gives his ‘constructive’ (sorry) criticism on page 44.
Whether you’re launching a new product, running a promotion or would like to find out more about how IN&AROUND can work for you, call us on 0191 3882 844
Another option, of course, is to simply curl up on the sofa with your copy of IN&AROUND and peruse any of our other intriguing features this month, such as our Q&As with local business Jacksons Blinds (page 10) and our very own media sales manager, Val Atkinson, on page 24.
In the spotlight.
We really do have it all for you in our pages this month! Bye for now, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for our April issue.

college ing, or n i a r t rk, o wo t t e g g you n i p l e H Wheels 2 Work is a moped-loan scheme which aims to help people access employment, apprenticeships or education that would otherwise be inaccessible due to poor public transport connections or out of hours work patterns. Currently Wheels 2 Work has helped 96 Durham residents to take work, get to work and stay in work, training or education. The project was set up in response to a growing need to help local people get to work or college. The idea behind the scheme is to provide a loan of a moped for at least 6 months to help people to establish themselves in work and/or training. Mopeds of either 50cc or 125cc are available to people aged 16+ as long as they have a provisional or full driving licence. Riders are also provided with brand new protective clothing (helmet, armoured jacket, gloves, waterproof over-trousers and high visibility vest) and a heavy duty lock, and are covered for moped insurance, road tax, MOT, breakdown cover, as well as regular servicing of the moped. Wheels 2 Work also put participants through their Compulsory Basic Motorcycle training, which involves a full day’s certificated course, followed by a 2 hour CBT+ session on a separate day. On the CBT+, clients are provided with additional road time and are issued with their protective clothing and moped. The cost is £25 per week for a 50cc and £30 per week for a 125cc moped. (Grants may be available for those on low incomes – please ask for details).
As long as riders pay their weekly fee and put petrol in the tank, they have everything they need to get to work and back! Please get in touch to find out more or to ask for an application pack, or pass on our details to anyone who may experience difficulties getting to work – this scheme aims to make people more employable by helping them to be mobile and independent.
They're waiting for your call! Tel: 0191 303 8442 Email: info@w2wcd.org.uk Facebook: Wheels2workcountydurham
Wheels 2 Work is supported by grants from the North East Combined Authority (NECA), Durham County Council, a number of County Durham Area Action Partnerships, the County Durham Community Foundation, the Virgin Money Foundation and the Scotto Trust. 6 | IN&AROUND

Case Study – Wayne Wayne is 31 years old and lives in Bishop Auckland with his mum and little sister. Wayne has worked at Team Knowhow as a Drivers Mate for 3 years; however travel to work had been a huge issue for Wayne with him relying on lifts from a colleague or walking to work as there were no bus services available to get him there early on a morning. When Wayne’s colleague changed shift; Wayne worried he would have to give up his job and income source as he could not get there on time.
independence and opened up new opportunities for him. He now goes to the cinema regularly, calls to see friends or he can help his family out by popping to the shops; enjoying going to the Arnison Centre. On a morning Wayne can how have a lie in and actually eat breakfast before going to work. Wayne feels that being part of Wheels 2 Work has totally changed his life and at work he is able to demonstrate, reliability, flexibility and commitment now and is even able to do overtime.
It was Wayne’s little sister who saw a Wheels 2 Work advert on Facebook and she persuaded Wayne to apply. Wayne applied to Wheels 2 Work in June 2018 and by August he had taken delivery of a 125cc moped. Previously it was taking Wayne 1-2 hours to get to work; however on his new moped he was there in under 15 minutes. Wayne also found that he was saving money.
Wayne describes the Wheels 2 Work County Durham scheme as ‘absolutely brilliant and a life changer for me’ and he would definitely recommend the scheme to a friend. Wayne has high praise for the staff saying they are ‘brilliant’ and enjoys calling into Ace Motorcycles, (who deliver the Compulsory Basic Training) as all the ‘lads are friendly’. He also said the PPE provided was ‘decent stuff’.
Wayne felt that having the moped totally increased his
Wayne highly recommends Wheels 2 Work County Durham; calling it an ‘excellent scheme’.

Jackson Blinds
Q - What made you start up Jacksons Blinds? We decided to start Jacksons Blinds because we knew that we could offer a great service from start to finish, having been in the blind industry for many years we had the experience and confidence to offer our customers the very best products from leading suppliers at a very competitive price while delivering excellent customer service. Q - Do you offer a home visit when people select blinds? Yes, we offer home visits to our customers at their convenience. We also provide quotations over the phone and online, free of charge and no obligation. Q - What advice do you offer to homeowners who aren’t sure which product to buy? If you are unsure about what blinds are right for you, we can arrange a home visit and bring many samples and styles and demonstrate how the blinds will look and operate so you can choose your new blinds confidently. Q - Are certain materials better than others for particular rooms? Yes, the requirements of your blinds may differ from room to room. You may require a black out fabric for the bedrooms or a PVC material for areas of high moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms. This is something we can discuss during your home visit to ensure you get exactly what you want from your new blinds. Q - Which do you find more popular, Vertical or Horizontal blinds? Horizontal blinds are definitely becoming the more popular blind, real wooden venetian blinds and the PVC faux venetian blind range are currently the most popular products that we offer our customers. As they come in a wide variety of colours, styles and slat width from standard strings to a vast selection of decorative tapes it’s easy to see why they are the new blind of choice. 10 | IN&AROUND
Q - Which blinds/materials would suit a family whose pets like to climb? Depending on the customers preference and the pet in question a roller blind would almost always be my first choice. Roller blinds are easy to operate from either a plastic or metal cord chain attached to the wall or a spring-loaded pull mechanism with the pull cord at the bottom of the blind. The roller blind can then be set at a height out of the way of any pets, or a hard-wearing fabric can be used such as a PVC fabric which is easy to wipe clean. You could also have Faux Wood Venetians for pets that like to see out the windows or even chainless PVC verticals all depending on the customers preference.
Q - Do all blinds now come with a Rod rather than the old style Cord pull for safety reasons? We take child safety very seriously at Jacksons Blinds and all our blinds are fitted to comply with the latest child safety legislation. We do offer a tilt rod system rather than a cord system on our vertical blinds but that is the customers preference and if cords are preferred then they will be fixed to the wall with a child safety device. The blinds where a tilt rod is not an option i.e. roller blinds we ensure the cords are fastened to the wall with child safety devices at a height of 1.5m from the floor to keep them out of reach of children.
Q - Why should people choose Jacksons Blinds? Jacksons Blinds is a growing family run business, we aim to provide a friendly efficient service from start to finish ensuring the customer gets exactly what they want at a price that’s fair. We provide an extensive range of fabrics and materials to our customers from leading manufacturers and suppliers to ensure we have the best quality products on offer. We also have aftercare on our products and a guarantee ensuring peace of mind when you purchase your new blinds with us.

Care home fundraising drive gets at the heart of the matter
A specialist nursing and residential care home in Durham has shown that it doesn’t take the Mickey when fundraising for a great cause, generating more than £400 for a charity close to its heart. Staff at St Aiden’s Cottage in Bearpark, Durham helped to raise vital funds for the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (CHUF) based at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, on discovering that their manager’s newborn granddaughter was receiving treatment in the specialist heart unit. The granddaughter of manager Amanda Cavanagh was born in November with a rare heart condition known as Left Hypoplastic Heart Syndrome, which basically meant she was born with only half a heart. Having performed many open-heart procedures on her, the unit is now closely overseeing her progress and recovery. “Delight” at care and generosity of St Aiden’s Cottage staff Amanda commented: “I’m delighted at the support that our staff have given to CHUF. One of the team suggested that instead of having a dress down day on payday that we dress up in our favourite Disney character pyjamas and onesies and donate a fiver to the charity. 16 | IN&AROUND
“It was great to see Eeyore and Tigger working with numerous Minnie and Mickey Mouses. Our residents loved it. We also had a tombola, brought in a singer to entertain everyone and held a raffle too. We’ve raised more than £400 for CHUF and everyone has been so supportive. I’m very grateful.” A crucial lifeline to so many people with injuries and disabilities The firm responsible for operating St Aiden’s Cottage, Careline Lifestyles, is an independent provider of high-quality nursing and residential care, with expertise in acquired brain injuries, neurological and mental health needs and learning and physical disabilities for adults. The company also provides nursing, residential and social care for the elderly across its nine homes in an area spanning Teesside to North Northumberland. Careline Lifestyles chief executive officer Rahul Sharma, who is based in the firm’s Newcastle head office, said: “At Careline Lifestyles we care for people with a complex range of specialised needs. I know how much we care for our residents and it’s great to see our team at Bearpark helping other caring organisations by donating in this way. I’m very proud of them.”

Keeping you in touch, with quality
web development
It’s fair to say that digital media has transformed how we interact with one another. From social networking, to online news, and filling in forms, we simply have vastly more choice available to us than ever before, when it comes to communicating who we are and what we do. But while choice certainly comes with opportunity, it also creates a fresh challenge for demand. During this battle for search engine attention, communication itself can become diluted, or even lost.
That’s why, when we’re developing a website, we don’t just make the site robust, responsive, easy to find, and simple to navigate – we also ensure that the essence of the brand involved is captured on every page. So, when people land on your site, they instantly get a feel of who you are, what you do, and, crucially, what you can do for them. This is one of the many reasons we love working with local, public services; simply seeking an effective way to stay in touch with their customers, and let people know about the incredible work they do, every day. For instance, we recently launched the following two websites.
Springwell Village Primary School, Gateshead www.springwellvillageprimaryschool.co.uk Requiring a practical, manageable website for keeping in touch with parents and the local community, Springwell set Jak HQ the task of building a showcase of the school’s many, exciting achievements. Naturally, we built the website to be bright, fun, and informative – and were inspired by the school’s eagerness to engage with everyone in the local area. Within the site navigation, we created useful, quick links for both school-age and nursery parents, and made sure the school’s latest news posts were visible to as many visitors as possible. Throughout the project, we worked closely with the school on delivering their vision for the new site, making contacting the school simpler, and keeping in touch with school activities and key events easy. Personal Support Network, Middlesbrough www.personalsupportnetwork.org The Vision and Values of this home care service provider told us all we needed to know about the people behind the service. Dedicated to helping people with a variety of home care needs live as happily, and independently as possible, the team has been supporting their local community for the last 7 years – and we were delighted to help them on this journey. Using the soft, pastel colours of their brand, we built an aesthetically pleasing website that makes finding and contacting them easier, and allows the team to showcase the many supportive services they provide.
It couldn’t be easier to communicate more effectively with your audience, with an engaging, new website. Call the team today on 0191 388 2698 to get started or send an email to hello@jakhq.com, and we’ll get to work on letting people know what you’re going to do for them. 20 | IN&AROUND

Cestria Florists
Q - How long have you been a florist and what made you choose that as a career? I have been a florist for 17 year, I covered for a girl for a few days in the shop while she was off sick and really enjoyed it and decided to do it for a living.
Q - What made you move premises after being established for such a long time at your previous site? I needed bigger premises as the business is becoming bigger and we were struggling with the space we had and the front street location seemed perfect.
Q - What is your favourite flower and why? Tulips because it reminds me of spring and there are lots of different colours and varieties available Q - If you could make a floral arrangement for anyone/event who or what would it be? Any floral arrangement we make , whether it is a customers personal choice or we have a freehand is a pleasure to do.
Q - What is your favourite time of year and why? Spring is my favourite time of year because i like spring flowers and the gardens come to life with the bulbs. Q - Are there any celebration/event that you prefer to make floral arrangements for? I dont have a favourite because weddings are obviously a very special day and flowers can be a very important aspect of the day and its nice to be part of that. But on the other hand funerals are just as important to me because the funeral tribute is the last thing we can do for the loved one.

Val Atkinson
Q: H ow did you first become involved with IN&AROUND?
A: I applied for a Telesales job back in 2006 and was lucky enough to be offered the job, 13 years later and I am still here. It may sound a bit cheesy but I actually love my job! Q: W hat do you like most about working on the magazine? A: My favourite part of working on the In&Around magazine is getting to speak to all of our lovely advertisers. Advertising in In&Around works, I have had some companies who have been with us since I started and it’s great to build up a relationship with people over time. Q: What is your funniest or most memorable moment from working on the magazine? A: My most memorable moment has to be just after I first started for I&A, we were putting the November edition together and I had a vision of Santa Claus getting stuck in a chimney with his legs sticking out of the top. So, I searched for Chimney Sweep to advertise and make my vision come true. I found Sooty’s Electrical Chimney Sweep and told him of my idea, he agreed to run an advert and for my idea to be created for his artwork…. Stuart stayed with I&A every month for the next 10 years! Q: H ow would you like to see the magazine evolve in the months and years ahead? A: I&A has been in production for the last 15 years so we have stood the test of time, we have grown each year and our distribution is the highest in North Durham for an independent community magazine. We have big plans for 2019 so I can only see In&Around 24 | IN&AROUND
growing from strength to strength. A lot of this is largely due to the support that we get from our wonderfully loyal advertisers. Q: What is your average day like? A: WOW! No two days are ever the same, I speak to our advertisers to make sure they have everything they need or if there is anything else I can do for them. It’s not just about selling space in the magazine, it’s also getting to know your customers and advising them where necessary with regards to artwork, content or upcoming events that they should promote. We have customers coming into reception and ringing every day because we not only produce the I&A magazine, but we are also a full service creative agency offering everything you could possibly need in terms of print, online marketing (SEO, PPC & Social Media), Web Design and Development.
Q: W hat are your favourite shops in the areas that I&A covers? A: Oooh that’s a tricky one as there are so many. My favourite cafe is Passingtime in Chester le Street, Paul does a really good afternoon tea! I also love Barry’s Bargains in Consett, although my Husband says I go a bit wild when we go there. I love to wander through Durham Market, I really like the individual traders. Q: What types of businesses would you like to work with in 2019? A: I like to see new independent retailers opening on the main streets and help them to raise their profile and get new/extra footfall through their doors. I would also like family friendly pubs to appear more, a lot of pubs are now dog friendly but not everyone knows who they are. There is also a new dessert cafe coming to Chester le Street soon so I may have to have a look in……for research purposes only you understand!

The town lies in the valley or “dale” of the River Kent from which it derives its name, and has a total resident population of around 29,000. But Cumbria is a modern construct, and traditionally Kendal was in Westmorland, and at the time of the Domesday book was compiled it was part of Yorkshire with the name Cherchebi.

Stanley police officer wins a trolley dash after smuggling superstore’s bag into Buckingham Palace garden party We all know someone who’ll do almost anything to win a competition. However, one Stanley cop went further than most when he managed to smuggle a plastic carrier bag bearing the name of his local superstore into Prince Charles’ birthday garden party at Buckingham Palace. Palace guests dressed in their finery watched on bemused as Sergeant Dave Clarke had his photo taken with a bag from Barry’s Bargain Superstore in Consett. However, he pulled the stunt for a good reason, as it won him a trolley dash that he decided to do in aid of a foodbank at Stanley community hub PACT House. “I thought it was a wind-up” Sgt Clarke explained: “Barry’s Bargain Superstore challenged customers to get their bags to the most unusual place for a prize. I got a call from Buckingham Palace saying I had been invited to a garden party. “I thought it was a wind-up at the start. I don’t know why I was invited. Maybe it was my good looks.” He continued: “I took the bag into the party in my back pocket. I was planning the photograph, hoping to get Prince Charles in the background as he came out of his mum’s house.” Although he didn’t ultimately get to meet the Prince of Wales, Sgt Clarke described the event as “a great day out” – and crucially, he managed to get the winning photo taken. He added: “It was fantastic. There were people from some great organisations, including the Prince’s Trust. We are very proud of the royal family and it was nice to visit.”
32 | IN&AROUND
A keenly contested competition, but a worthy winner and cause Sgt Clarke said store owner Barry Kingston was already a strong supporter of PACT House, having provided “loads of stuff” already. According to Mr Kingston, “up to 150 people took part in the competition. We had customers sending pictures of our carrier bags all over the world – from Hong Kong, Disneyland, an oil rig and on ocean liners. “We even had someone scuba diving in the Gulf of Mexico with one of our carrier bags under the water. “We thought Sgt Clarke’s picture at Buckingham Palace was the best. Plus it was in aid of a good cause.” Despite only having two minutes in which to fill his trolley, Sgt Clarke made good use of his time, targeting food with protein to complement the existing stocks at PACT House. “I aimed to get things like Fray Bentos pies, tinned ham and chicken and corned beef,” he explained, “so they can mix it with staple foods people usually donate, which quite often are pastas and carbohydrates.” Sgt Clarke has now challenged other businesses and organisations to do a trolley dash for PACT House, declaring: “You can get a lovely trolley of food at a Barry’s for a very reasonable price. “A trolley like this will make a difference to 20 families, who are really going through the crunch at the moment. “PACT House does up to 25 food parcels a week. Some mothers have up to six children to feed. It’s all by donations.”

Major cycling event could take place in County Durham this September Durham County Council said it had received an invite to co-host a high-profile, closed-road Vélo North cycling event this September, to coincide with the 2019 Year of Culture campaign. The high-profile event could attract thousands of people, and generate millions of pounds. Participants and spectators can look forward to 100 and 50-mile routes, while community events and activities would also be held to persuade people to take up cycling. Although the route had not yet been finalised as IN&AROUND went to press, it was reported that the organisers intend to guide cyclists through the North Pennines, Durham City and Bishop Auckland. Cllr Ossie Johnson, cabinet member for culture, leisure and rural issues, commented: “This event is an opportunity to show off our beautiful county to a new audience. This is just the kind of event we should deliver in County Durham, especially in a year when we are celebrating culture and sport and the many benefits they bring.”

Finchale Group works within the local community
Finchale Group works within the local community providing opportunity and support to local people. This occasionally includes voluntary work helping to improve community grounds and organisations, where we can build partnerships to benefit the people we support. Spennymoor Football Club is a local club at the heart of its community, and having the chance to send veterans to them to help with the grounds has helped us create a great team spirit. Working together to put in a fence at the clubs training grounds may sound like physical work, which it was, but we found it helped everyone become a team with an enjoyable time being had by all. Age UK Durham have recently established a warehouse superstore located just around the corner from us on Mandale Business Park. They are working on opening a community shed which would provide woodwork training to our clients as well as providing volunteering opportunities within the organisation itself within the stores. 40 | IN&AROUND

Where there’s a Will, there’s a way:
why you should participate in Free Wills Month The importance of an up-to-date Will, written by a solicitor, can scarcely be overstated. This vital document not only ensures that your wishes are respected once you’re gone, but in the process, also avoids difficult decisions having to be made, and legal anguish for your loved ones.
To participate in Free Wills Month, all that you have to do is get in touch with one of the firms of solicitors taking part in the campaign. The solicitor that you choose will then assist you in drawing up a Will that accurately reflects your wishes as an individual or couple.
So with all of that in mind, what more worthwhile way of spending your free time this month could there be than taking part in Free Wills Month?
It is also vital to note that appointments are limited, and allocated on a first come first served basis. This means that a given solicitor’s involvement in the campaign will come to a close once all of their available Free Wills Month appointments are booked, which may be well before the end of March. We would therefore urge you to act quickly if you wish to take advantage!
As the name of the campaign suggests, Free Wills Month is all about enabling people just like you - by which we mean, members of the public aged 55 and over - to have their simple Wills written or updated free of charge by participating solicitors in selected English, Welsh and Scottish locations. So, what more do you need to know to make the most of Free Wills Month?
How you can learn more about this invaluable campaign - and spread the word
This year’s Free Wills Month runs from 1st March, and it’s not just you who could benefit, as you will also have the opportunity to affirm your support for any of a wide range of UK charities - including the likes of The Salvation Army, Prostate Cancer UK, Marie Curie and many more. It’s worth noting, after all, that most UK charities depend on legacies for as much as half of their income.
More information about Free Wills Month 2019 can be found at www.freewillsmonth.org.uk; there, you will be able to find out more about how you can get involved in the campaign, and who is eligible to be helped. You’ll also find a free downloadable guide to planning a Will that will guide you, step by step, through a process that can be intimidating for many.
While there is no obligation for you to leave a gift to one of the charities supporting Free Wills Month if you do take up the campaign’s offer, it is earnestly hoped that many will appreciate the chance to help their favourite cause.
Finally, there are also social media ‘share’ buttons that will allow you to tell more people about the campaign and how brilliant it is - as we hope you will be doing for all of your County Durham friends throughout March!

FILM REVIEW: Lego Movie 2 We’re living in dark times, and even Lego minifigures know it. Well, almost all of them. One persistent holdout has been Emmet Brickowski, the “everyman” star of 2014’s blockbuster (geddit? Oh, suit yourself) animated film The Lego Movie. Despite his previously vibrant home of Bricksburg having been reduced to a ravaged wasteland appropriately rebranded Apocalypseburg, he’s still clinging to the mantra of “everything is awesome” like… well, many Lego fans for the last five years. That particular song doesn’t quite feature in this gritty sequel, which picks up straight from the first film’s cliffhanger ending of Lego Duplo toys beaming down into Bricksburg and threatening devastation. We do, however, get plenty of electronic numbers in what often veers close to an intergalactic musical. It’s an apt soundtrack, as Emmet’s plastic pals are snatched by the spacesuit-clad General Mayhem, whose ominously distorted-sounding voice is courtesy of Stephanie Beatriz. As Emmet is now left stranded in Apocalypseburg with only sceptical strangers for company, he’s basically back in the position he was in for much of the first film: a nobody who has to help his friends against seemingly hopeless odds. It shows how Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who directed that earlier movie but this time stick to writing and producing while Trolls helmer Mike Mitchell directs, have crowbarred a clean slate from the first Lego Movie’s nearperfect ending. One real test of a sequel, though, is whether it can integrate new characters just as riveting as the established cast. It doesn’t take long for The Lego Movie 2 to pass that test, as Emmet enlists the help of Rex Dangervest, a raptor-training 44 | IN&AROUND
daredevil and an obvious nod to one of the best-known roles of Chris Pratt, who voices both Emmet and Rex. Then there’s Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi, the exuberantly shapeshifting leader of the Systar System to which Emmet’s captured friends are taken. Like the Tiffany Haddish-voiced Queen, the plot regularly changes form, throwing in more than a few red herrings and keeping us guessing as to exactly where it’s going. There’s a lovably bonkers spirit running through The Lego Movie 2, including Richard Ayoade as the Queen’s neurotic assistant Ice Cream Cone, and Alison Brie’s growling vocalisation of Unikitty’s aggressive new alter ego Ultrakatty. Imagine a red, female cat version of the Incredible Hulk, and you’d be about there… That’s not to say that absolutely everything quite clicks. The last third of the film is arguably a little bewildering, with shocking revelations coming thick and fast in a way that could leave many viewers slightly struggling to process it all. However, without wanting to spoil the lovely pay-off, let’s just say that it all boils down to furthering the first film’s message that there’s no “right” way to enjoy Lego. The Lego Movie 2 doesn’t communicate this with quite the same panache and emotional resonance as its predecessor. Still, overall, this energetic sequel remains a highly confident package, with plenty of cute, funny and thoughtful touches making for a touching love letter to Lego-filled childhoods.

Pancake and dessert cafe coming to
Chester-le-Street
Chester-le-Street could be the latest European town to become home to a dedicated pancake house, with the news that Miss Elephant Limited has pledged to open such a cafe in the unit currently accommodating Frank’s carpet shop, next to the County Durham town’s market place.
The statement also referred to the boost that such an establishment could give to the wider town centre, adding: “With forthcoming works to the Market Place, our considerable investment in this unit overlooking the Market Place will be of great benefit to all traders in Chester-le-Street.”
Should the proposals be given the nod, customers would be able to pop into Miss Elephant for pancakes, European desserts, tea, coffee and sandwiches.
Frank’s carpet shop is intended to move into the empty unit next door to make room for the pancake house. A time of change for Chester-le-Street
“A high-quality and different cafe” The company stated in its change-of-use application to Durham County Council: “Similar outlets are available across Europe and have recently opened in Durham and Newcastle and we believe we will be the first in Chester-le-Street to offer this menu. “Living and working locally in Chester-le-Street, we are confident of the demand for a high-quality and different cafe opening.” The cafe is planned to be open from 9am to 7pm, Monday to Sunday, with later opening at certain times of the year. 46 | IN&AROUND
The news of Chester-le-Street soon gaining a pancake cafe comes as Durham County Council is set to commence work on a flood prevention scheme expected to “breathe new life” into the town centre. The works will partly entail the reinvigoration of the Market Place’s present ‘red carpet’ area and the creation of a location capable of hosting festivals and events. The town’s existing historic market will also be a key focus of the redevelopment work, being moved to a new area within the site.

March
Stars of Les Misérables in Concert The Empire Cinema & Theatre, Consett For one night only, the dashingly handsome and talented male stars of the world’s longest-running musical will be in Consett to woo a County Durham audience with what Elaine Paige has hailed as “incredible voices and outstanding musical magic”. We are, of course, referring to Les Misérables stars The Barricade Boys, who will be at The Empire Cinema & Theatre on Saturday 23rd March; tickets are priced at £22 and can be purchased via www.empireconsett.co.uk.
Whether your dear Mum is a history buff or simply appreciates the finest in afternoon teas and excellent northern hospitality, you really couldn’t give her a better treat than a day at Raby Castle, encompassing a tour of this distinguished venue on arrival, free access to the Park and Gardens and – of course – the tea itself. The experience costs £25 per person, and we would advise you to book your tickets for this special 31st March event sooner rather than later, at www.rabycastle.com.
Ouseburn Open Studios Various Ouseburn venues, Newcastle upon Tyne The Ouseburn Valley has long enjoyed a reputation as Newcastle’s cultural epicentre, and over the weekend of 23rd to 24th March, you’ll get to have a closer look at exactly how it has gained this status. The spring Ouseburn Open Studios event will see a series of venues within walking distance of each other open to the public, showcasing the working spaces and latest projects of more than 200 artists and designer-makers. Look up ‘Ouseburn Open Studios’ on Facebook and Twitter or take a look at www.ouseburnopenstudios.org for the latest news and venue information.
Durham on Film Gala Theatre and Cinema, Durham
Calendar Girls the Musical Sunderland Empire The musical version of Calendar Girls, based on the 2003 film of the same name and featuring music and lyrics by Gary Barlow, has been delighting audiences since its triumphant world premiere at Leeds’ Grand Theatre in 2015. This marvellous musical comedy scored five-star reviews during its London West End run, and reaches the Sunderland stop of its UK tour from 19th until 23rd March. You can snap up tickets at www.atgtickets.com.
You’ll never see Durham in quite the same way again after watching this remarkable compilation of footage of the county and city from across the past century, as taken from the vaults of the North East Film Archive. It’s a compelling glimpse of the ever-changing landscapes, industries, sights, sounds, faces and places of one of northern England’s proudest areas. It airs at Durham’s Gala Theatre and Cinema on Saturday 9th March, and you can grab your tickets for £10 – or £8 concession – at www.galadurham.co.uk.
An Evening with the Hairy Bikers City Hall, Newcastle upon Tyne The two men that we now all know as The Hairy Bikers – Si King and Dave Myers – have earned the well-deserved status of national treasures, thanks to various hit TV shows and country-wide tours. They’re embarking on their latest huge tour of the UK in 2019, and will be at Newcastle’s City Hall for an epic night of cooking and conversation on Sunday 31st March. Visit www.theatreroyal.co.uk to secure your tickets, which are priced from £23.35; a VIP package is also available. 50 | IN&AROUND
