Welcome... to the March issue of IN&AROUND! Well, the first few months of 2018 have treated us to a bit more snow and ice than we’d normally associate with England – even at the height of winter – but you might have noticed that the skies are getting brighter, and the daylight hours now numerous. Sure enough, if February was all about slushy snow and mushy romance, March will be centred very much on those big occasions like Mother’s Day and Good Friday, both of which we have features on in this month’s edition of IN&AROUND.
ISSUE 154 March 2018 READ ONLINE AT: issuu.com/inandaroundmag DIRECTOR Benjamin Kerry MEDIA SALES Val Atkinson DESIGNER Daniel Haley COPYWRITERS Gavin Lenaghan Craig Lenaghan ACCOUNTS Victoria Pilch CONTRIBUTORS I Bird Photography - Front Cover Alex Nelson - Places to Go George Nairn - Remember When DISTRIBUTOR Paul Emmerson
But it’s also a time of poignant endings and new beginnings, as shown in our latest issue by Chester-le-Track stationmaster Alex Nelson’s article on the train ticket firm’s impending shutdown and the accompanying closure of the station toilets and waiting room at Chester-le-Street. Oh, and as usual, we’ve also been paying a visit to the cinema, namely Vue Gateshead, to see the blockbuster everyone’s been talking about: Black Panther. Is it a game-changer for black representation on the big screen, or just another all-action Marvel movie? ‘Flick’ (we’re proud of that one) to pages 26-27 for our verdict. Once again, we couldn’t do all of this without our wonderful advertisers, so please take the time to check out their services! As for if you’d like to promote your own County Durham company in the magazine, simply get in touch with us by calling 0191 388 2698 or emailing sales@inandaroundmag.co.uk, and we’ll tell you all about our discounted three and six-month packages. Please enjoy this month’s IN&AROUND and send us your feedback. In the meantime, bye for now, have a very happy Easter and we’ll see you again in April!

It's Dr. Seuss's birthday. That is truer than true!
This month is that of the birth of the much-loved children’s author and illustrator Dr. Seuss. The man with the real name of Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on 2 March, 1904. Before his death at the age of 87 in 1991, he wrote over 60 children’s books, more than 600 million copies of which have been sold. Many children of today could still rejoice in the silliness, experimental language and touching moral lessons of the work he has left behind.
The early pre-war works
There was a strong German presence in Seuss’s ancestry, all of his grandparents having emigrated from Germany. His boyhood home was on Fairfield Street, under a mile away from Mulberry Street, which Seuss later immortalised in his earliest children’s book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. That was published in 1937, following rejections by several publishers - and Geisel penned another four books before the United States’ entry into World War II. Those books included the prose works The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins in 1938 and The Seven Lady Godivas and The King’s Stilts the following year. Nonetheless, his first book had been a poetic work - and it was with 1940’s Horton Hatches the Egg that he returned to poetry, the literary genre with which he would become most strongly associated.
From children’s writer to political cartoonist
During World War II, much of Geisel’s work had a much more political 6 | IN&AROUND
flavour. In the space of just two years, he drew more than 400 political cartoons as editorial cartoonist for the New York City newspaper PM. Those cartoons much later, in 1999, saw publication in Dr. Seuss Goes to War. The cartoons attacked Hitler and Mussolini and also opened fire at non-interventionists who believed that the US should not enter the war.
Oh, the places you’ll go as a Dr. Seuss reader
Following the war, Geisel resumed working on children’s books. The classics that he wrote during his very productive post-war period included 1950’s If I Ran the Zoo, 1956’s If I Ran the Circus and 1960’s Green Eggs and Ham. This period also saw him produce three books which, in the twenty-first century, have all been adapted for cinema: 1955’s Horton Hears a Who!, 1957’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas and, of course, The Cat in the Hat, which was published in the same year. The Cat in the Hat has especially intriguing origins. In 1954, Life magazine reported that schoolchildren were suffering in their literacy due to the dull books which they were given to read. William Ellsworth Spaulding, who directed the education division of publishing company Houghton Mifflin, listed hundreds of words which he deemed crucial for children to recognise. He then asked Geisel to write a genuinely interesting book which used 250 of these words. The resulting book by Seuss used 236 of the words given to him. Wonderfully imaginative but also suited to novice readers, The Cat in the Hat became a big international hit.

TRADERS FEAR HISTORIC CHESTER-LE-STREET MARKET COULD BE ‘KILLED’ BY MOVE Proposals to move Chester-le-Street’s historic market as part of a flood prevention scheme have been met with anger by traders. Durham County Council is considering opening up a stretch of the Cong Burn that runs under the town’s Market Place, as part of its £6.2 million investment in flood prevention. If the plans proceed, the watercourse would be turned into a public realm feature. However, such work would also necessitate the relocation of more than 100 market stalls during and after the works which traders have warned will “kill” the market that takes place each Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. “Stalls you have to erect are not substantial enough” Among the critics of the planned disruption is 52-year-old Chris Simon, who runs Immanuel Fabrics and travels 120 miles from Burnley, Lancashire for the market. He commented: “This is a family business and we have been coming here for 40 years. It has always been a strong market but they changed it a few years ago and spent a fortune and moved us elsewhere. The business went totally flat - nothing. “We have managed to recover when we came back here but now they are going to change it again after spending all that money. They’re saying they are going to put us at the bottom on stalls we have to erect ourselves. Stalls you have to erect are not substantial enough because of the weight, it’s a danger as well.” Mr Simon added that the authority had kept him “in the dark” about its intentions, adding: “They are telling us bits and pieces but nobody seems to know what’s going on properly.” Meanwhile, fishmonger Keith Blight - who runs Healthy 8 | IN&AROUND
Plaice - urged the council to increase its investment in the market. The 54-year-old suggested: “What they want to do is put a roof over like an indoor market, people won’t get wet, have a few tables, people can walk around and have a coffee. “Even just put hard plastic over the stalls. If the market was done right people would come - it is a market town.” Council defends plans Sites under consideration for the market during the works include the former Civic Centre car park, the car park to the rear of Wesley Terrace and Cone Terrace next to the taxi rank. The council has also indicated that the market could be permanently moved to South Burns, Red Carpet or Front Street. Head of technical services at Durham County Council, John Reed, said the authority was consulting with traders and the public. He added: “As part of the consultation, we are asking market traders and the market operator about possible alternative locations while the work is carried out and once it is complete. “We appreciate the market is a popular and important feature of the town and will ensure whatever option is agreed there will be sufficient capacity to accommodate all of the current market traders.” Up to £1.5 million is being committed by the council for the scheme, which also includes proposals to extend the existing flood wall in the town. The authority is applying to the Environment Agency and European Regional Development Fund for the rest of the cash.

EASY TO OVERLOOK GEMS
The Waiting Room, Eaglescliffe
CHESTER BURN VIADUCT, CHESTER-LE-STREET There are undoubtedly some stunning sights that you can enjoy from a train on the East Coast Main Line that runs all the way between London and Edinburgh. In County Durham alone, those sights include the elaborate-looking railway station in Darlington, the beautiful Durham Cathedral, and much of Chester-le-Street from the railway viaduct known as Chester Burn viaduct.
This viaduct was built in the 1860s and opened in 1868, accepting freight trains on 2nd March and passengers on 1st December. To this day, the structure still consists of its original stone and bricks, including red engineering bricks, although the western part has been somewhat resurfaced. The listing does not apply to railings and refuges added after the original construction.
The viaduct’s amazing length – spanning a total of 750 feet – and height of 90 feet afford train passengers plenty of opportunity to see Chester-le-Street’s amenities, including the town’s Tesco superstore. However, the viaduct – a Grade II listed structure – is also worthy of admiration for its own appearance, which is perhaps best appreciated from the ground of Chester Burn.
At the time of that construction, Chester Burn was a bustling place with both residential and industrial buildings. These days, the same area is perhaps best known for its market, which takes place every Saturday, and the previously mentioned Tesco superstore. So, it’s still a busy area, although not quite in the same way as local residents during the late 19th century would have known.
If you’ve ever prepared to catch a train at the lovely little town of Eaglescliffe, you might have considered waiting for your train at… The Waiting Room. There’s a very good reason why we have capitalised those words: they form the name of an award-winning vegetarian restaurant that is not only conveniently close to the railway station, but also enticing in its culinary offerings. Upon walking into the restaurant for the first time, you could be struck by its friendly and bohemian feel – whether you favour eating in the airy and elegant front room or more vivid conservatory back room. However, to use a fitting pun, the proof of the pudding is in the eating; the restaurant regularly serves up succulent dishes comprising slow cooked vegetables and organic dairy. The food can go down well with the offered beverages, which include all-organic wines and beers. There have already been plenty of plaudits for The Waiting Room. This eatery has been, in numerous recent
years, a runner-up in The Observer’s Best UK Restaurant category, while the Vegetarian Society has handed its “Best Restaurant in The UK” accolade to this dining spot. The BBC Good Food magazine has hailed The Waiting Room “a wonderful little restaurant selling great food”. One of our own favourite aspects of The Waiting Room is the live music and arts events it regularly hosts in its back room on Sunday evenings. Big name comedians who have played this venue include John Bishop, Stewart Lee, Josie Long and Viz co-founder Simon Donald – yes, really!

FILM REVIEW
A
s you might have gathered from much of the fervoured press chatter, the 18th film from Marvel Studios - described in turn as “a self-contained marvel”, “a superhero movie with serious muscle and style” and “a superb genre film - and quite a bit more” - is, well, not just about finally giving a black comic-book star a film of his own. In any case, the latter titbit is far from true, that honour having long gone to 1997’s Spawn, a year ahead of Wesley Snipes’ Blade. Indeed, Snipes himself signalled as far back as 1992 his intention to work on a Black Panther film, only for the momentum behind such a project to not start gathering steam until the mid-2000s. In the meantime, the Afrofuturism into which Black Panther heavily leans - which can be very roughly defined as an approach to science fiction and fantasy grounded in African cultures and the black experience - has continued to thrive in music through such acts as Janelle Monae, Willow Smith and Kanye West. 26 | IN&AROUND
Now, film finally has its big-blockbuster Afrofuturist standard-holder - and many observers are wondering why it took so long for a studio to take on the task. A convention-buckling Coogler epic There are many more descriptors that one can apply to Black Panther - family saga, espionage thriller or simply another classic in the pantheon of Marvel superhero movies that will giddily excite overgrown and actual 10-year-olds alike. So much of this is attributable to director Ryan Coogler’s already well-honed instinct for the ambitious, audacious and pyrotechnically spellbinding, despite this being only his third film. For the benefit of those of you who aren’t Marvel dweebs, it all centres on the tale of Black Panther himself - real name T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) - who is officially crowned as the king and super-powered protector of the secretive techtropolis of Wakanda after his father’s death.
‘IT’S HARD FOR A GOOD MAN TO BE A KING.’
Boseman is joined in a predominantly black ensemble by such talent as Michael B. Jordan - who plays the improbably buff challenger for T’Challa’s throne, Erik “Killmonger” Stevens - and Lupita Nyong’o, whose turn as T’Challa’s former lover and an undercover spy for Wakanda undertaking missions in other countries sees her treated to some of the film’s wittiest lines. Another major threat to the kingdom comes in the form of the brawny arms dealer speaking in a spicy Afrikaner bark, Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis), who has his sights trained on Wakanda’s vast deposits of an indestructible metal known as vibranium. Not just another Marvel juggernaut Of course, for all of its cultural significance and political nuances, Black Panther remains a big-budget Marvel film, with almost everything that entails - but not quite. Yes, the third act couldn’t be more Marvel at its heart if it tried - a big, noisy CGI climax. But the moral and political questions that Black Panther contemplates aren’t touched on in the haphazard or peripheral manner that seems the case even with the Dark Knight trilogy or the X-Men franchise. Instead, they are very much central to its architecture, providing a thought-provoking narrative seam from the first scene to the last - even if you may also simply be having too much fun to notice.

Places To Go...
A Journey coming to an End
This series has been running in some publications since 2002, encouraging people to take to the rails from their local station, and visit places of interest throughout the United Kingdom, sometimes even to Eire and continental Europe. Some articles have led to groups travelling by train as a result, perhaps away just for the day, or for nights away to enjoy an area in more depth. The series started with Saltburn by the Sea, always a favourite, and led to a large group taking the train, changing at Darlington where my daughter, then quite small, wanted to go to the toilet. The connecting train left on time minus said daughter who arrived at Saltburn half an hour later with Pauline, now my wife.
I have always researched places personally and have only once had to admit defeat in finding interesting things to do. This was at Northallerton where the town has plenty of coffee shops and retailers, but that alone does not make a day out. Thirsk was much more interesting. Years later two of my apprentices (Henry and Ali from Eaglescliffe station) had a great day out on the Wensleydale Railway from Northallerton West, with a walk over the fields to visit Castle Bolton. Tickets to most of my recommended destinations can be purchased from Chester-le-Track, which 28 | IN&AROUND
runs two stations at Chester-le-Street (since 1999) and Eaglescliffe (since 2011). We currently have five staff at CLS and three at EAG, five men and three women, six of whom were recruited as apprentices, some direct from school, who have learned how to plan journeys and issue tickets throughout the UK. We book to 2,563 stations in Great Britain, more in Northern Ireland, more PlusBus destinations, airport coaches, Metro stations and other light rail services, and pioneered the sale of Oyster cards outside London in 2006. At first, though, Transport for London were not keen on us reselling Oysters and summoned me to their 55, Broadway HQ for a dressing down. We won in the longer term: anybody in the travel trade can now place an order at 13% commission. Time has moved on. Contactless cards valid on buses, trains and tubes are now a better deal than Oyster pay-as-you-go. They are even now accepted on buses and Metro in the north east, as well as at CLS and EAG. A combination of higher internet sales with special internet-only offers, forthcoming introduction of on-platform electronic ticket machines, stalling demand for rail travel, falling or insufficient revenues, new smart cards appearing soon (a north-east version of Oyster), withdrawal of support for our current office ticket machines, and minimum wage leapfrogging our rates of pay prompted the decision to close. There is little prospect of improvement in any of the above situations. We have always accepted that passengers arriving from elsewhere and returning again will never purchase tickets from us. But it is galling that now only 20-30% of originating traffic at our

stations purchase their tickets at the station. So when we close at Chester-le-Street, who will open and close and keep an eye on the waiting room? The websites cannot monitor the toilets, and the coffee machine. How long would an unattended waiting room last in good order? At Eaglescliffe who will advise you how to travel when the Grand Central is cancelled or delayed? So we’ll be closing on Easter Saturday 31st March and hope you will pop by in to see Helen 1 and Helen 2 at Chester-le-Street along with Paul, Tony and Jack and buy your tickets from staff with 2,000 hours of experience every year in finding you the best fare. At Eaglescliffe, another Paul, Ali and Henry have developed the business with irregular visits from me. Together they are a great team, and I wish them all the very best for the future.

GOOD FRIDAY: WHAT IS IT AND HOW SHOULD YOU SPEND IT?
Many of us are familiar with Good Friday as the beginning of the lengthy Easter weekend which includes, following the usual weekend days, Easter Monday. However, perhaps not all of us are familiar with the religious relevance of the date or the great opportunities that can come our way at the same time as Good Friday. Here is a more in-depth look at the history of Good Friday and how you can spend it in a manner that is especially fitting and enjoyable. Why do we call it “Good Friday”? The celebration of Good Friday springs from commemoration of the date of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and death at Calvary. According to accounts of the Gospel, this date is when Judas betrayed Jesus, who was then sentenced to death. Given these reported events, it might initially be surprising that Christians accept “Good Friday” as the name of the day commemorating Christ’s death. However, several theories have been proposed with the aim of helping to clear confusion. Experts have put forward the idea that the “good” in “Good Friday” was intended to mean holy or pious. It has also been speculated that “Good” was just an alternative spelling of “God”, making the day effectively “God’s Friday”. Another theory suggests that Christ’s tragic crucifixion brought “good” to his followers. Whatever the true reason for the name, Christians have always yearly set aside a Friday on which to “unite their sufferings”. Christians often refrain from eating meat on this day. There’s something fishy going on... and there isn’t There are various ways that people in the UK tend to spend Good Friday. Regular attendees of church might, on the day, attend a special church service. Other common Good Friday pastimes include gardening and, unsurprisingly given the length of the Easter Weekend, embarking on a getaway. However, the 30 | IN&AROUND
“no meat” rule followed by many Catholics on Good Friday has led to the emergence of a particularly distinctive tradition: eating fish. Some people might think that forgoing chocolate eggs in favour of fish may seem like a different kind of fishy. However, there’s nothing strange about it; in fact, millions of people tuck into this type of seafood on Good Friday. The Good Friday tradition of eating fish is actually much older than that of chocolate eggs. It started due to Christians remembering the Passion by choosing to sacrifice meat due to its associations with celebrations and feasts. So, why did they not deem fish to be meat? This is because of Church law which defined meat as originating only from animals living on land and birds. Fish, however, was not included in the same classification. Historically, meat was often eaten only on celebratory occasions; however, fish was considered more of an everyday delicacy, as the majority of people were fishermen. Therefore, you could opt to spend your Good Friday in a coastal setting like Seaton Carew or Redcar and nibbling fish and chips. Now, that would be good in a different sense of the word.

MOTHER’S DAY GUIDE: HOW TO TREAT YOUR MUM ON THE MOTHER OF ALL DAYS “God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.” That was the early-20th-century writer Rudyard Kipling’s assessment of the role of mothers – and he has been far from the sole scribe to acclaim our maternal relatives. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, one of the Lake Poets, remarked that “a mother is a mother still, the holiest thing alive” – and Les Misérables writer Victor Hugo enthused that “a mother’s arms are made of tenderness and children sleep soundly in them”. Yes, our mothers are indeed awesome… and that’s why, when Mother’s Day comes around this month, we should treat them in an extra-extra-special way. Several such ways, in fact. You might already have numerous ideas for how to lavish love and attention on your mother. Yes, you could get her flowers, a card, and perhaps that Take That CD she always meant to get but kept forgetting to – because she was busy raising you. Ahh! We’ve got some unique ideas for the big day.
34 | IN&AROUND
May the right Mother’s Day date be with you
How to treat your mother? Put some thought into it
You might think of hitting Google to look for some Mother’s Day gift ideas. However, one big risk of doing that is getting the wrong information about when exactly Mother’s Day is. That’s because the day falls on a different date to when it is celebrated in the US – and, for that matter, many other countries. Here in the UK, Mother’s Day always falls on Mothering Sunday; that’s the fourth Sunday of Lent, not to mention three weeks ahead of Easter.
Considering how much of her time your mother has spent looking after you, imagine how much she could appreciate it if you now spend Mother’s Day looking after her. You could give her breakfast in bed, serve her dinner, do her hoovering… the list could go on. However, if you have little time to spare, a gift or two could suffice. Just make sure that any gifts you do get her are thoughtful…
In America, Mother’s Day is instead on the second Sunday of May. That’s quite a bit later than when we Brits mark the occasion; so, don’t mistakenly choose to hold off buying a card for your mother until May! The difference in Mother’s Day dates can be attributed to cultural differences. In the US, the May date was chosen because peace campaigner Anna Jarvis, who called for a day on which mothers would be honoured on that side of the Atlantic, lost her own mother during May.
For example, you could get her something that you know she will actually use. That could be a comfortable bathrobe or cute purse. You could order something personalised; Moonpig lets you order a customised Mother’s Day card with a price tag of just £3.29. Online craft marketplaces like Etsy and Not on the High Street are also good sources of quirky and likeable gifts - and both of these sites also offer mobile apps with which perusing the range of products can be especially fun.

GIVE YOURSELF THE LOOK OF THE IRISH ON ST. PATRICK’S DAY Every 17th March, many of us will start wearing lots of green, don tall hats, and drink plenty of beer... all to mark St Patrick’s Day, which commemorates St Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint. Hence, there is naturally a very strong Irish flavour to the celebrations, both in Ireland itself and around the world. How did the tradition of St Patrick’s Day emerge - and how could you celebrate it yourself once 17th March comes around again? You won’t need the luck of the Irish to learn the answers. St Patrick: an intriguing and mysterious saint St Patrick lived from 385 to 461 and is often deemed more responsible than anyone else for establishing Christianity in Ireland. Patrick himself was born not in Ireland, but instead Roman Britain. The widely accepted story allegedly originally penned by the man himself - is that Irish raiders kidnapped a 16-year-old Patrick and made him a Gaelic Ireland slave. The story continues that he “found God”, who helped him to escape back home, where he came a priest. However, tradition says that he later returned to Ireland and converted thousands of members of its Celtic society to Christianity. It is thought that he died on 17th March, which is why this has remained the fixed date for St Patrick’s Day. Conveniently, this year, that date falls on a Saturday. Therefore, you might not need to book any time off work to make the most of St Patrick’s Day. Thinking of having a tipple on St Patrick’s Day? If so, there are plenty of Irish beverages for you to choose from. The most obvious choice is Guinness; this thick, black and creamyheaded stout has fended off competition from many other Irish beer brands, including Harp, Murphy’s and Caffrey’s, for premier position in the Irish drinking scene. However, if your heart 36 | IN&AROUND
remains set on Guinness, you could unjustly overlook many other brands that may warrant your attention come St Patrick’s Day. For example, the brewer Galway Bay produces Buried at Sea, a chocolate milk stout wonderful for its toasty smell and silky texture. The chocolate flavour certainly isn’t overwhelmed, either - not even by the smoky and nutty finish. Another shrewd drinking choice would be The White Hag’s Little Fawn, with flavours of grapefruit and mango. Also worth sipping is The Full Irish; it’s made by an Aussie and a Kiwi, but also with malts sourced from Ireland itself. How else could you mark St Patrick’s Day? Your St Patrick’s Day can be about far more than just drinking. You might fancy nibbling some toast on which Kerrygold Butter - Ireland’s bestknown butter, and a wonderfully creamy one as well - has been spread. You might fancy listening to some music, too. Irish traditional music has become a popular part of St Patrick’s Day; however, if your music tastes are more electronic, you could head to Durham’s Loveshack nightclub on the big day, as electropop star Basshunter - or Jonas Erik Altberg, to use his real name - will be performing there.

What’s on March
The Hills are High, Oriental Museum, Durham Think of South Korea and you might immediately think of its military prowess and smartphone industry. However, Durham’s Oriental Museum is currently holding an exhibition which provides a more in-depth view of life in the East Asian country. This ongoing exhibition’s photographs, captured by curator Lauren Barnes, shed light on the political and cultural sides of South Korea, as well as many of its fascinating contrasts between tradition and technology, nature and urban development.
Talking Heads by Alan Bennett, Gala Theatre, Durham Often hailed as one of Britain’s best playwrights, Alan Bennett penned Talking Heads for television back in the 1980s to critical acclaim. This month, you will be able to enjoy three of the original monologues in a live realm. Of course, for many, ordinary life under Thatcherism could be bittersweet, tragic and darkly comic - and we can see this clearly in these stories. Performances will be repeated from 6 to 10 March.
Easter Egg Making Workshop, Davenport’s Chocolates, Gateshead You’ve probably already long seen an array of suspiciously egg-shaped chocolates in shops. However, even if you like to plan well ahead with buying Easter gifts, you could too easily end up with something rather soulless if you stick to shelling - ha! - out for mass-produced chocolate eggs. At this workshop, you can mould your own chocolate egg shells and decorate them. The workshop runs from 11:30am until 1pm on 31 March and costs £35 per ticket.
Lucy Worsley, Gala Theatre, Durham Popular TV historian Lucy Worsley’s new biography of the Regency writer Jane Austen will hit bookstores in May 2018. However, people of the North East don’t have to wait that long to enjoy Dr Worsley’s storytelling about the Pride and Prejudice scribe... The Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces will be dropping by the Gala Theatre on 19 March to tell us how Austen’s home affected her and provide an insight into her wit and passion.
Ed Byrne: Spoiler Alert, Tyne Theatre & Opera House, Newcastle One of Ireland’s best-known comedy exports, Ed Byrne has long been proving the consistency of his comedy chops with his guest appearances on the hit BBC show Mock The Week. He also makes common appearances on the live comedy scene. In this new show, he takes a simple idea - that the modern generation is relentlessly spoilt - and runs with it to sparkling effect. Spoiler alert: it’s a very funny show.
Supergirl, Sky1 Now in its third season, this small-screen telling of the story of Supergirl will, on 26 March at 8pm, return to UK television sets after a mid-season break. If you have yet to acquaint yourself with Superman’s female cousin, it’s not too late to change that. To many residents of National City, Kara Danvers may look like just an ordinary girl in her twenties. However, she is secretly Kara Zor-El, a daughter of Superman’s native planet, Krypton. She also takes the heroic guise of Supergirl, National City’s protector. Episodes of Supergirl tend to hit UK screens pretty soon after being aired on US shores; therefore, you are unlikely to have to fret about online spoilers. However, long-term fans of the series should know what to expect - and that’s a slice of thrilling action mixed with more down-to-earth drama. 42 | IN&AROUND
