Welcome to the August issue of IN&AROUND! As the North East – like the wider UK – comes somewhat closer to normality, we are following suit here at IN&AROUND. Your free community magazine has more to share about what’s happening locally in these peculiar times. For example, some of the nation’s favourite food outlets – including Greggs and Domino’s Pizza – have been given the go-ahead to open in Stanley. The County Durham town is also getting a drivethru Starbucks, as we explain further on page 8. Those aren’t the only exciting outlets opening in the area soon, as the popular footwear retailer Shoeaholics has confirmed a store for Dalton Park, near Seaham. Those boots were made for walking – and if, like Sting, you like the idea of walking on the moon, you could also check out our tribute to Neil Armstrong on page 30. The famed astronaut would have been 90 this month. Meanwhile, if you’re in the mood for an adventure while, naturally, responsibly socially distancing, you could refer to our August events line-up on page 44. New College Durham supports popular student travel scheme To ensure the cost of travel does not become a barrier to learning, New College Durham has pledged to continue its travel scheme for the next academic year.

The College works in partnership with Go North East and Arriva bus services to ensure that students can access the College. During the 2020/21 academic year, all 16 to 19 year olds on full time courses who live more than 3 miles from the College can apply for a bus pass which allows them to use local bus networks to travel to and from College. Plans approved for Greggs, Domino’s Pizza and drive-thru Starbucks in Stanley Stanley is primed for a new Greggs, drive-thru Starbucks and Domino’s Pizza, after planning bosses gave the go-ahead for construction of the outlets on land near Agnes Street. It was confirmed in early July that the planning application for the erection of three retail units, with associated landscaping, parking and access, had been approved, amid reports that 65 jobs could be created as a result, including 14 fulltime positions and 51 part-time roles. A key development “opportunity” DPP Planning explained in a planning statement: “The site represents a good opportunity to create usable and accessible commercial space with excellent transport links. “The proposal comprises the clearance and

releveling of the existing site with a new retail development comprising a food retail and a drive-thru coffee restaurant. “The site layout comprises two separate buildings. One is divided into units one and two and comprises units with floor areas of 1,500 sq ft and 1,000 sq ft respectively. “The buildings are single storey and are configured around a central car park easily accessed from the vehicular site entrance.” Stanley continues to welcome major brands The confirmation of this key development is another example of the County Durham town’s ability to lure all manner of household-name brands, with McDonald’s, Aldi and Home Bargains having all opened local stores in recent years.

Reach Out, we’ll be there! Since our launch on 31st October 2016, Reaching Out Across Durham (ROAD) has supported over 1000 individuals to find their potential. Our free and voluntary service is hosted by Groundwork NE & Cumbria, funded by the European Social Fund and the National Lottery Community Fund, and is a Partnership Programme of 7 specialist organisations. ROAD is designed to help residents of County Durham who are out of work and aged 25 plus to overcome barriers to entering into, or towards employment. We help by enabling our Participants to move into education, training or work. We do this by working closely with individuals to improve their confidence, develop their skills and promote knowledge, health and well-being.

Health Trainer, Hannah, from Partner Pioneering Care Partnership, has been working with a Participant who had never before thought about how his mental health was negatively impacting his life, and was unaware of the free services available. Hannah introduced him to the Talking Changes service, and whilst unsure at first, after a couple of weeks he decided to give it a go and is now receiving sessions with a trained counsellor in addition to accessing online resources. He thanked Hannah for persuading him to access this service and said it’s made a world of difference to his mental health, allowing him to be more positive. It’s given him the confidence to make many small changes, all helping him feel ready to re-enter employment. He couldn’t thank ROAD enough for the support we have given, especially during lockdown. ‘Pick and collect’ service introduced at County Durham libraries Durham County Council has launched a new ‘pick and collect’ service to enable the region’s readers to access its book collections at a time when libraries are otherwise still closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since Monday 6th July, library users have been permitted to borrow books from the county’s libraries for the first time since the imposition of lockdown restrictions. The service enables members of the public to order as many as three titles online or over the phone, before collecting them at an arranged time from a participating library. Which libraries are involved in the scheme? The first libraries in County Durham to offer the ‘pick and collect’ service were chosen on the basis of the amount of space they had for visitors to safely queue prior to entry, as well as for a quarantine area to be created for returned books. The initial participating libraries included Chesterle-Street, Barnard Castle, Consett, Newton Aycliffe, Crook, Seaham and Peterlee, as well as Belmont in Durham and Woodhouse Close in Bishop Auckland. The service is open to everyone, regardless of 18 | IN&AROUND
where they live in the county or which library they usually visit. None of the participating libraries will be open for browsing or any other library services, such as access to public computers, which will remain suspended until further notice. “A step towards a new normality” Cabinet member for transformation, culture and tourism, Cllr Joy Allen, commented: “Our eBooks and aMagazines have been available online throughout the pandemic and have proved incredibly popular. However, we know how much library users have missed our book borrowing services over the past few months. “Our pick and collect service will allow them access to books while we work towards bringing our library buildings back in to use when it is safe to do so. Notable Birthday Neil Armstrong, August 5th 1930 This year, the 5th of August, would have marked Neil Armstrong’s 90th birthday. It’s almost impossible to find someone who doesn’t know who Neil Armstrong is; he took one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. Yes, this American astronaut and aeronautical engineer was the first person to walk on the moon. Armstrong was born in 1930, near Ohio’s Wapakoneta in the USA. He always had a passion for keeping his feet off the ground – as a child, he took flying lessons at the grassy Wapakoneta airfield and earned a student flight certificate on his sixteenth birthday. In 1947, when Armstrong was just 17, he began studying aeronautical engineering at Purdue University and was the second in his family to receive further schooling. His impressive education opened several doors; after a stint in the Navy, he became an experimental research test pilot and, in 1958, an employee of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Though he has a rich and exciting history, Armstrong is most acclaimed for being the first person to walk on the moon, on 20th July 1969. Surprisingly, this astronaut was famously known for being reticent about his achievements. Instead of basking in the glory of leaving the first ever footprints on the moon, he instead preferred to focus on the team that got him there. 30 | IN&AROUND
On 7th August 2012, at 82 years of age, Armstrong passed away following a complicated surgery to relieve his coronary artery disease. He left behind a dazzling legacy – and, to this day, no one has yet to replace his moonwalk with their own.

Berwick

the many occasions I have been to visit Berwick, I have On always turned right out of the station to follow
Castlegate into the town centre. This time, I turned left over the railway, looking out for the 1937 Coronation Park on the left, through which runs a footpath downhill to the north bank of the River Tweed. I was walking the new three mile Tweed and Coast nature trail, supported by many local bodies and charitable foundations, and devised by the local U3A. There are fourteen information boards on the trail which runs through Berwick and Tweedmouth via the docks to Spittal beach so the path is part riverside, urban, industrial, dunes and seaside promenade. Spittal has a long and wide expanse of sandy beach, and is rather nicer than the name might imply. In the 1800s it was a popular spa. A similar trail about L. S. Lowry, the artist, is available. There is plenty of wildlife to see and the information boards are attractive and, notably, are changed for each season four times a year to keep the content relevant. A simple idea, but I have not seen it done before in practice. The group organising the trail has just installed the summer versions of the boards. One told of the 2m long Pholiderpeton fossil – might have been useful for helping social distancing. I passed through the ruins of Berwick Castle at low level and was impressed by the grandeur of the Royal Border Bridge, which was officially opened by Queen Victoria on 29th August 1850 on her way to Balmoral, a process which took only twelve minutes from her train arriving to continuing over the border, 2.5 miles further north. (It was a good day for rail openings: she had opened Newcastle Central station earlier the same day.) I continued into town under the 1928 Royal Tweed Bridge which relieved most of the traffic on the Berwick Old Bridge of 1633, which I crossed to Tweedmouth. Road traffic had to trundle through the town until the opening of the A1 Berwick bypass in 1984.

It’s much quieter now, and although the population is around 12,000 you would think it were bigger owing to the large number of villages in both England and Scotland which look to it as their local centre. I was originally intending to visit after the pubs and restaurants reopened on 4th July, but I reckoned that since Berwick pubs were the closest for locked down Scots up to 300 miles away it might be wiser to visit beforehand. I enjoyed fish and chips at the Cannon near the station and ate them in Castle Vale Park with its view of the rail bridge, but I could have sat out at the open air café in Spittal. On the nature trail you also pass the Berwick Shellfish which had a good range of seafood. They offer to put it in a polystyrene box with ice for just £1 extra to take home. From Spittal there is a choice of walking back along Main Street and over the river to town, or use the Borders Buses route B1, which runs half-hourly (hourly on Sundays). If you don’t want to visit the town centre, the bus goes back close to the station. I spotted the Spittal War Memorial off Main Street and behind it a fountain which was an iron-rich chalybeate spa, but there was no indication whether the water was safe to drink. So I didn’t. Alex Nelson travelled to Berwick from Newcastle with CrossCountry for £9.90 and returned with LNER for £8.20.

Shoeholics set to open Dalton Park store The hit online footwear retailer Shoeholics has signalled that even during these uncertain times when so many brands seem to be fleeing brickand-mortar outlets, it’s possible to buck the trend. Indeed, as IN&AROUND headed to press, Shoeholics had confirmed that a shop at Dalton Park, near Seaham, would be one of six soon to be opened around the UK, in locations such as London’s Oxford Street, Birmingham and Glasgow Silverburn. A success story in times of recession More than 12 million customers regularly snap up bargain footwear on the Shoeholics website, which is known for the heavy discounts it offers on shoes from such in-demand brands as UGG, Birkenstock, Kurt Geiger, Skechers and Steve Madden. Shoeholics digital director Gareth Rees-John explained that the firm had seen a big jump in customers’ level of spending in its online store after lockdown restrictions were imposed. He commented: “We saw a clear trend during lockdown of consumers spending money they saved from not going out on their obsession with shoes. We have the largest online collection of

designer shoes covering 150 brands and individual consumer spend was in many cases three times the norm. “The recent increase in consumer spend, we know is due to our value proposition for branded shoes which is unrivalled in the UK with discounts available between 30% - 40%.” He described the business’s decision to open six shops as “a confident move that reflects both the UK’s continued obsession with shoes and consumers’ focus on value in these uncertain economic times.” Could now be the perfect time to stock up on affordable footwear? Reports at the time of this article being written indicated that the Dalton Park outlet was set to open by the end of July. With Rees-John promising that Shoeholics’ highstreet presence will represent “a one-stop shop for shoes from over 100 great brands”, enthusiasts of both affordable and stylish footwear in County Durham have been given one more reason to venture back out to physical retail stores as the region continues its recovery from the coronavirus outbreak.
