More than 10,000 households in County Durham are benefiting from the service, allowing people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. If additional support is required, numerous types of equipment called Telecare is available, including items for people at risk of falling, support for those with memory loss, or dementia, those

suffering with epilepsy, or those that are deaf or blind. If you don’t want an assessment of your support needs through Social Care Direct, don’t worry. You can always purchase directly from Care Connect. An example of the technology available is a fall detector, an unobtrusive device worn about the person which identifies a genuine fall and immediately alerts the control room so appropriate assistance can be provided.

in association with

Things your pets should avoid this Christmas 1. Chocolate – the larger the quantity and darker the chocolate the more likely it is to cause problems. Chocolate toxicity can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, fast heart rate, increased thirst and seizures. 2. Christmas puddings and mince pies containing grapes, raisins or currents which can be deadly to dogs. There is no safe level of these and vomiting should be induced as soon as possible. 3. The artificial sweetener xylitol can be found in many sweets and cakes and is extremely toxic in very small doses as it causes very low blood sugar levels which, if not treated, can cause seizures.

4. Alcohol – dogs are significantly more sensitive to alcohol than people are and can develop incoordination, lethargy, vomiting and breathing difficulties. 5. Decorations – chewed baubles and tinsel can lead to intestinal blockages. The most common clinical sign of this is vomiting. 6. Salt dough ornaments can cause fatal salt toxicity. 7. Christmas plants such as poinsettia, mistletoe and ivy can all cause vomiting, diarrhoea and excessive drooling. 8. Left over food such as turkey bones can cause intestinal blockages; onions can cause damage to red blood cells and blue cheese can be fatal. If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic, contact your vet immediately. The quicker treatment is started the better the chance of recovery. Treatment can range from making your pet sick, charcoal to stop absorption, to being hospitalised for fluid therapy.

*Note – this is an emergency situation and veterinary attention should be sought without delay* For furthur advice or queries give us a call on 0191 410 9674

Plans for the construction of a new B&M store in Chesterle-Street now approved Chester-le-Street is in line to get a new B&M store, the proposed development of which was recently approved by Durham County Council. The new store will be built on a site historically occupied by a British Gas depot but now vacant, helping to pave the way for the redevelopment plan.

Last year, the plans were subject to a public consultation held by planning and development company Lichfields. In January 2019, Daniel Gregg, senior planner at Lichfields, declared the plans an excellent opportunity to transform the vacant site deemed an eyesore.

In 2019, developer Imopro SA applied to the council for permission to build the new B&M store on Pelton Fell Road and to the west of the town’s existing Tesco supermarket and railway viaduct.

He remarked: “B&M has an existing store on Front Street in Chester-le-Street, but this can only accommodate a limited selection of their product range, whereas the proposed new store would contain a broader range of goods including DIY/ home improvement, household and other bulky goods.

As the new store will officially be part of the B&M Home chain, it will be much larger than the B&M store that can already be found on Front Street. The new store’s internal floor space is expected to span about 20,000 square feet, while the site will also include 64 car parking spaces. Two of those spaces will be disabled spaces, while another two of the 64 spaces will be parent and child spaces. Last year, the entire projected development was reportedly set to cover 1,858 square miles and include landscaping as well as access from Pelton Fell Road. B&M expects the new store to directly create about 40 full-time and part-time jobs. These figures don’t include the further spin-off employment the store’s presence will foster in local businesses and other companies in the supply chain, while construction jobs will also inevitably result. Though the intended land for the construction project has previously been developed, that site has since been cleared of any buildings and most vegetation. 12 | IN&AROUND

“This scheme will enhance the choice of retail facilities available to residents of Chester-le-Street and help to reduce the need to travel elsewhere in the region.” Similar comments were made in a statement submitted to Durham County Council on Imopro’s behalf, explaining: “The proposed development would not result in any significant adverse impact, either upon investment in centres or town centre vitality and viability.

“Whilst there would be some overlap between the existing B&M store on Front Street and the new Home store, the two stores would be complementary, with the new facility having a much stronger focus upon bulky and other household goods.” The council has now approved the scheme, subject to conditions.

Devilstone Brewing Co. Devilstone Brewing Co. have devoted themselves to brewing premium craft beer for flavour-loving folk in the North East and beyond. Enjoy the vast range of juicy, hoppy drinks that Devilstone create – all of them full of flavour. Devilstone might seem like an unusual name, but it is full of meaning. Devilstone results from the rock that sits in the market place in Crook, nicknamed the ‘devilstone’ by locals. It seems fitting that, as it was in Crook where Devilstone first developed their brewing skills and recipes, they retained the namesake. A range of flavour-forward beers are brewed here, with only the finest and freshest natural ingredients – serving to concoct a variety of artisanal flavours. From hoppy American pale ales and IPA’s to indulgently decadent imperial stouts, there’s no limits to the flavours Devilstone can create.

William Parkin, director of Devilstone Brewing, made the decision to grow the business organically through building a reputation of quality and exciting innovation on beer styles – avoiding gimmicky marketing campaigns. They are particularly thrilled to offer speciality brewing in ways that have never been done before. In fact, it has been said that their “craft beers, innovation and brewing styles are fascinating.” Through following an ethos of passion and dedication unlike any other, Devilstone have driven themselves to use the most up-to-date and modern brewing methods possible – all to deliver the top-notch craft beers you deserve. For slightly selfish reasons, Devilstone Brewing have created beers that they love to drink themselves – you’re sure to love drinking them too.

Devilstone boast distinctive aromas, combined with full-of-life flavouring to create a drinking experience you’ll never forget.

Walt Disney, 5 December 1901 When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true. You guessed it, this month’s notable birthday is the one and only Walt Disney, father of the worldfamous Disney franchise. Walter Elias Disney was born in Chicago on 5th December 1901, but his magic didn’t start to spread around the world until the early 1920s. After moving to California and setting up the Disney Brothers Studio with his brother Roy, his most notable and lovable character was born: Mickey Mouse. Possibly inspired by a pet he adopted, Walt became inseparable from his creation in 1928, with Walt providing the voice and soul of the character until 1947. With the success of everyone’s favourite cartoon mouse, Disney grew more and more adventurous, turning his hand to theme parks. He opened his first Disneyland in California in 1955, and even helped plan the 1960 Winter Olympics! In 1965 he started planning his most experimental project yet, Disney World Florida and its Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, or EPCOT. Sadly, Walt Disney didn’t live to see his Florida vision realised. A lifelong smoker, he passed away of lung cancer on 15th December 1966, aged 65. Death did not stop his legacy, as Disney continues to release classic animations and remakes to this day.

Jak HQ at the

of our community

Jak HQ recently made an awesome donation to the foodbank at Durham Christian Partnership in County Durham! Understanding the struggles some families are facing in these harsh times, the creative agency decided to combine Halloween with a lovely gesture... Each person that dressed up put money in a pot while other staff made contributions on top. After a trip to Morrisons, the team delivered 61.84kg (78 meals) to the church! While we’re all certainly in the same storm right now, we are not in the same boat. Be kind to others and look out for your community. If you can donate this winter, please do. 28 | IN&AROUND

FILM REVIEW:

Jingle Jangle:

A A Christmas Christmas Journey Journey PG PG || 122 122 minutes minutes

Christmas in modern times is just as much about binging on the wonderfully cringey, festive-themed guiltypleasure films as it is about presents, food and family. You’d be hard pressed to find someone that would turn their nose up at the likes of Elf, Miracle on 34th Street or The Polar Express at this time of year – especially on the cold, dark nights leading up to 25th December. However, many of the newer festive films released within the last decade fail to capture the spirit of Christmas, and come across more as a festive cash-grab than anything of real substance. A Netflix original that entrances the eye Enter Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, a Netflix original Christmas musical released on 13th November. The film centres on a genius toy inventor, Jeronicus Jangle (Forest Whitaker), who loses his passion after his apprentice, Gustafson (Keegan-Michael Key), steals his greatest creation. Jangle must rediscover his love of inventing and get his life back, and does so with the help of his charming granddaughter, Journey (Madalen Mills). Various colourful characters are met along the way and there are more than a few huge song-and-dance numbers to boot. Visually this movie is brilliant, no doubt partly thanks to the seemingly bottomless pit of money that Netflix has access to. The animation is very well-done, and captures the magic of Christmas in a way that only talking toys and magical adventures can. The characters, although at times slightly one-dimensional and borderline annoying, are mostly well-acted and enhance the story in one way or another. 40 | IN&AROUND

Mediocre music, but enchanting performances The songs themselves were extremely forgettable and you certainly won’t be stuck with any of the lyrics in your head over the festive period, but the performances were great and show off the immense talents of the primarily African-American cast. Furthermore, the choreography was definitely the highlight of the experience, and doubtless owes much to director David E. Talbert’s stage production background. To sum up, this movie isn’t going to be breaking any records, and I can’t see it becoming an annual Christmas classic; however, it’s a visually pleasing and interesting tale that will no doubt keep the kids quiet for two hours at the very least. Fans of The Greatest Showman will feel right at home among the colourful and over-the-top song-anddance numbers. Of the cast members, Madalen Mills was the standout performance for me, and is certainly a young actor whose career you should keep an eye on.

Railmap 2021 The

new UK National Rail Map, published since 2009, takes note of the major developments on the railways this year. In the future, it may be seen either as the high water mark of railway services in the UK, or a reset to be followed by a new structure which is not yet clear. In the earlier spring lockdown, sales of the previous “Mayflower” map went through the roof. I frequently had to struggle into the Post Office with 24 maps which was the most I could carry in a plastic box. This publication is an excellent way to learn just how extensive our railway network is, and to plan places to which you might like to go in the future. So, welcome to the 2021 Railmap website brought to you by nationalrail.com, based at Bishop Auckland. This map is the product of careful research updated to give improvement in accuracy and aesthetic appeal every year. You can buy the new map which features both the revived Rail Riders club for enthusiasts, and the racecourses of the United Kingdom and Eire. Rail Riders is an enthusiasts club that was run by the state-owned British Rail and wound up in 1991, but has been revived this year by Simon Buxton based in Thirsk. Meanwhile the map shows every racetrack in the UK, both flat racing and National Hunt (jumps) and even lists the same in the Republic of Ireland. Once the pandemic subsides, our new promotion “Back a Winner by Train” will be launched. When bought by post, the maps are sent out in a sturdy tube. Postal tubes are not

42 | IN&AROUND

cheap to send, so we encourage you to buy multiple copies of the current edition, or back numbers (costing for as little as £2) to fill your tube with up to four maps. That way the cost of the postage is spread across the maps you choose. Last year's 2020 edition was the best selling ever with its depiction of the voyage of the Mayflower in 1620, and is now available for £6. You can have any permutation you like and we mail to you as soon as possible after receipt of your order. We feature over 2,620 stations including Northern Ireland, and proposed stations under construction or likely to be so. The map measures 63cm wide and 100cm deep, sized so it fits in the standard "British Rail" poster case. This map is by no means only for enthusiasts, but also for booking clerks to help plan journeys across the UK. It is most useful for regular travellers wishing to plot a journey, which is why ferry connections, Plus Bus interchanges, and details of request stops and restricted service stations are shown. It makes planning split ticketing journeys simpler in conjunction with the nationalrail.com website. Every station is shown with its three letter code, e.g. YRM for Yarm, CRM for Cramlington, to speed up online bookings. This map, and is predecessors, looks best framed on the wall, although four pins on a cork board works nearly as well. You can find miniatures of previous editions in the online Shop.

The postal tubes are here, the maps are ready, and we await your order to help inform you of developments in the British rail network. There is no official map featuring all the stations issued by the rail companies, the Rail Delivery Group nor the Department for Transport. alexnelson@dunelm.org.uk

Why Why your your company company should should step step up up its its marketing marketing during during lockdown lockdown 2.0 2.0 In early November, England was plunged into a second nationwide lockdown in a bid to stem coronavirus infection rates. You might have initially seen this as your company’s cue to rein in its marketing spending – but we are here to say: “Not so fast!” In truth, shutting down your company’s premises as mandated by the government doesn’t have to mean pulling the plug on your marketing as well. “Lockdown 2.0”, as the press has dubbed it, is actually a surprisingly good opportunity for you to foster stronger goodwill with your target market.

Your customers could need you more than ever in lockdown Whatever your customers – or target customers – are doing in quarantine, they haven’t necessarily abandoned many of their usual priorities; they have probably just readjusted them instead. For example, while they may no longer be able to visit their favourite pub or restaurant in person, they could still potentially order takeaways and deliveries from them, as permitted under the lockdown 2.0 rules. Meanwhile, many remote workers could need to order new tech equipment and supplies online when buying them in specialist tech stores on the high street isn’t an option.

Therefore, you shouldn’t be too quick to abandon your marketing activities; instead, you should think about adapting them, for the time being, to the “new normal”. With many people now spending a lot more of their time online, it’s through digitising your marketing that you could particularly hold your company in good stead during the pandemic.

How we could help you to close a funding gap Unfortunately, if lockdown has deprived your business of many of its usual income streams, you could find yourself struggling to free up the financial resources you need in order to invest in the likes of online articles, blog posts and video content as well as social media marketing. However, our team at the digital marketing agency Jak HQ could help you to make up for that lost income. We know of various financial relief bodies to which you could apply. We can also advise you on how to tweak your applications to maximise their chances of success. We can spearhead your company’s marketing activities, too – with website development, content writing, branding and SEO among our various areas of marketing expertise.

Call 0191 388 2698 or email hello@jakhq.com for a chat with our County Durham-based agency about the possibilities. www.jakhq.com

Mince pie brownies Combine two favourites in this clever mash-up of brownies and mince pies. These sweet treats will prove a big hit throughout the festive season Prep: 35 mins Cook: 30 mins

Ingredients

Method

• 185g unsalted butter, cubed

STEP 1

Easy

• 40g cocoa powder

Melt the butter and chocolate in a medium bowl, either in a microwave – cooking for 1 min on High, then stirring and continuing to heat in 20-second blasts – or by setting the bowl over a pan of simmering water and stirring occasionally. Once melted, leave the mixture to cool.

• 3 large eggs

STEP 2

• 185g high-quality dark chocolate, chopped • 85g plain flour

• 275g golden caster sugar • 6 mince pies or 9-12 mini mince pies • icing sugar, for dusting

Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line the base of a shallow 20cm square tin with non-stick baking parchment. Sieve the flour and cocoa into a medium bowl. Whisk the eggs and sugar with an electric mixer on maximum speed until thick and creamy, about 3-8 mins, or when the mixture runs off the beaters and leaves a trail for a second or two.

STEP 3

Pour in the cooled chocolate mixture, then fold together with a rubber spatula in a figure of eight, moving the bowl round until the mixture is a mottled dark brown. Be 46 | IN&AROUND

Serves 16

gentle so you don’t knock out the air.

STEP 4

Sift in the cocoa and flour mixture and continue gently folding. The mixture will look dry and dusty, then fudgy. Stop just before you feel you should, as you don’t want to overmix it.

STEP 5

Spoon a little mixture into the prepared tin, then add the mince pies, leaving them whole. Scrape over the rest of the mixture, gently easing it between and over the pies. Level the top. Put in the oven for 25 mins. If the brownie mixture is very wobbly in the middle, it’s not quite done, so bake for another 5 -10 mins, or until the top has a shiny, papery crust and the sides are just beginning to come away from the tin. Take out of the oven and leave to cool in the tin. Dust with icing sugar. Cut into quarters, then cut each quarter into four squares. Will keep in an airtight container for a week and in the freezer for up to a month.
