County Durham set for new £2 million bowling alley opening in autumn 2022 A new 14-lane bowling alley is expected to open its doors before the end of 2022, joining 11 other venues run by Superbowl UK around the country. The firm said the £2 million “family entertainment centre” in West Auckland would include a soft play area, assault course and amusement arcade, as well as a diner and lounge bar. The ChronicleLive website reported that construction work at the site just outside Bishop Auckland would start this autumn, with an expectation of the venue being open by Christmas 2022. Excitement about a “distinctive brand of family entertainment” A spokesman for Superbowl UK stated: “Superbowl UK are delighted to bring our distinctive brand of family entertainment to Bishop Auckland. Superbowl UK are an exciting and expanding 10-pin bowling operator.

“Our locations boast a range of facilities including Bowling, Crazy Club Soft Play, Laser Quest, Ninja Tag Active, SEGA Amusement Arcade, Bar & Diner. We achieve our goal by being consistently amazing whilst inspiring our guests and educating our team.

An undertaking that has been a long time coming ChronicleLive reported in early April that a licensing application had been made to Durham County Council to sell alcohol, play recorded and live music, and host indoor sporting events until 12:30am from Sunday to Thursday, and until 1:30am on Friday and Saturday. The website added that plans submitted with the application showed a games area with a line of diner-style seating, with a lounge bar towards the rear of the building. Meanwhile, a ‘Crazy Club’ soft play area could be seen to the left. Superbowl UK formally registered for a place at the 130,000-square-feet Bishop Auckland Retail and Leisure Park in February 2019.

“We continually invest in both our unique environment and our team to deliver memorable, fun and safe activities. We can’t wait to get started on bringing The Ultimate Family Entertainment Centre to Bishop Auckland in the near future.”

Kate Quaintance-Blackford, Superbowl UK Company Director, said in a statement at the time: “Superbowl UK Bishop Auckland presents us with an exciting opportunity to bring our distinctive brand of family entertainment to County Durham, where we believe it will prove extremely popular.

It was previously anticipated that the centre, at Bishop Auckland Retail and Leisure Park, would be in a position to open this autumn, only for the pandemic to force a delay to the project.

“The location of the site has been transformed over the past few years to become a major retail and leisure hub and we can’t wait to showcase our offerings.”

Notable birthday: Bob Hope On 29th May, 118 years will have passed since the birth of one of the true entertainment greats: Leslie Townes “Bob” Hope KBE. While Hope is widely regarded as an icon of American comedy – and accordingly decorated with honours – he was actually born in the UK, in Eltham near London. The fifth of seven sons of a stonemason and a Welsh former concert singer, he moved with his family to the United States at the age of four, and subsequently grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. There were early signs of what would prove to be his vocation at 10 years old, when he won a Charlie Chaplin imitation contest. However, with his large family suffering financial strain during his younger years, Hope initially worked various odd jobs to support them, ranging from shoe salesman to amateur boxer. A remarkable rise to legend status Such a natural talent as a performer couldn’t be kept down for long, though, and from his late teens, Hope embarked on an entertainment career. He went on to perform with a succession of partners in vaudeville, and made his first Broadway appearance in 1927’s Sidewalks of New York. So began a rise that would see him become one of the most popular comics in America by the end of the 1930s. This period included a failed Hollywood screen test, before he secured his first substantial stage role in the Jerome Kern musical, Roberta (1933). By the middle of the decade, he was appearing in a series of comedy shorts and gaining ever-more success on radio, a medium that lent itself well to his loquacious style. Further breakthroughs came in 1938, as he first sang what would become his signature tune – “Thanks for the Memory” – in his feature-film debut, The Big Broadcast of 1938, and launched The Bob Hope Show on radio.

14 | IN&AROUND

Celebrated for so much more than his comedy There was no stopping Hope from there. The 1930s saw the emergence of sound motion pictures and radio that allowed Hope to make a big impact with his brash style of verbal comedy. His persona was a largely unsympathetic character – a smart aleck who cowered at the slightest threat – but allowing the audience to feel superior to him also powered him to long-lasting career success. Among Hope’s subsequent triumphs were no fewer than seven popular Road pictures – beginning with 1940’s Road to Singapore, and concluding with The Road to Hong Kong in 1962 – in which he co-starred with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. Hope is just as well-remembered, however, for his decades of tours during his lifetime for the United Service Organizations, entertaining American military personnel on active duty around the world. Such was his country’s gratitude for his efforts that in 1997, the US Congress passed a bill recognising him as an honorary veteran of the US Armed Forces. Having retired from public life by the late 1990s, Hope died of pneumonia at his Toluca Lake home on 27th July 2003, just a few months after celebrating his 100th birthday.

Places to go...

Silverdale for Leighton Hall

“Leighton Moss is home to a wide range of spectacular wildlife”

I

wanted a long journey last August to see how the railway was performing outside the north-east, so I went to tiny Silverdale in north Lancashire, out via Newcastle, Carlisle and Lancaster. Returning the same way would have been cheaper, with a series of three off-peak returns, but I returned via Carnforth, Skipton and Leeds. Silverdale is a rarity these days: a station where the passage between platforms is not by footbridge or subway but directly over the tracks, with no warning lights. The route to Leighton Moss RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) reserve and Leighton Hall is well-signposted, and before long I was on the straight track east across the reserve and up into the foothills beyond, arriving at the Hall in 50 minutes. Leighton Moss boasts the largest reed bed in north-west England and is home to a wide range of spectacular wildlife including otters, bearded tits, marsh harriers, egrets and red deer. I could have cheekily peeped into the RSPB hides to observe the wildlife, but I pressed on, up through the field to Grisedale Farm and on the narrow paved road to Leighton Hall. Free Ordnance Survey maps of this area (and anywhere in Great Britain) can be obtained at www.streetmap.co.uk. Request postcode LA5 9ST. Leighton Hall is presently open on Thursday

and Sunday 2-5 (groups on other days by appointment) and was not always as peaceful as today. Owner Albert Hodgson became involved in the Jacobite rising of 1715, during which he was taken prisoner, and the house was burnt with Hodgson's possessions confiscated. The present house was built for George Towneley of Burnley, through his marriage to Hodgson's daughter Mary in the 1750s, in Georgian style and passed to the furniture-making Gillow family in 1822 who remodelled the frontage in Gothic style using local white limestone. It’s a comfortable home which the family open up, but pre-booking is essential. The woodland walk was informative, plus the walled garden which featured a large insect hotel and information from the gardener on how to promote wildlife. Given how many country homes are closed to visitors right now as a result of COVID-19, whether it’s National Trust, English Heritage or private properties, I was pleased to go on the 15.00 interior tour, which was interrupted by a birds of prey display on the front lawns. The tour resumed after the display finished so that visitors could enjoy the whole experience. Most visitors seemed to stay the full three hours. I finished up the last available strawberry scone in the tea rooms at 16.15, and went to collect my bag from the office of Mrs Reynolds, the current owner..

I retraced my steps back to Silverdale station through a field of inquisitive but not aggressive cows at Grisedale Farm, arriving at the station four minutes before the train. A few extra minutes in hand would have been less stressful! Then south one stop to Carnforth, where unfortunately the iconic “Brief Encounter” clock as featured in the film, was away for conservation. From Carnforth east to Skipton, which I had not ridden before as far as Giggleswick, and a cocktail in Herriots Hotel (very well organised for COVID-19) opposite the station at 1859 - just as Happy Hour was ending. I later had supper in Leeds, to experience the the one-way system introduced by Network Rail, and a coffee on the top floor Sky Lounge of the Doubletree Hotel near the station’s no longer new south entrance, and a late TransPennine train home to Chester-le-Street.

Don’t neglect your brand’s digital presence after lockdown. Finally, the UK – and the world – is seeing a way out of the worst of the COVID-19 crisis. Effective and safe vaccines are becoming available, restrictions on our lives are being lifted, and businesses like yours are gradually resuming some level of “normality”. But what does this mean for your online marketing? Simple: it means you need to keep up the momentum.

COVID or no COVID, marketing your business effectively on the web remains crucial.

And with the future far from guaranteed, you can already see the evidence of how relevant and robust businesses remain when they take seriously their visibility on the web. Even after lockdown, and even once the coronavirus is a mere memory, your business’s target audience will be using the web. They will do so via their laptops, smartphones and tablets, searching for and discovering the brands providing the most relevant products and services for their needs. Will their eyeballs set upon your brand? Here at Jak HQ, we’re determined to make the answer “yes”.

Think back to when the coronavirus pandemic first hit the UK, early last year. Did you decide to cancel that new website, or to reduce your spending on online content? Or did you redouble your commitment, realising that your brand’s digital activities would soon become more important than ever? The statistics tell their own story about who (probably) got it right. In February 2020, for instance, Internet sales were less than a fifth (19.1%) of all retail sales in Great Britain. By January this year, they accounted for over a third (36.3%). And the most recent available statistics showed those numbers at a continued high. So, you can probably imagine what brands reaped the benefits of investing in their digital marketing as the COVID-19 crisis took hold.

Call 0191 388 2698 or email hello@jakhq.com today, to learn more about how we can assist with your business’s branding, social media, SEO, print and content requirements. We’ll even help you get up to 40% off our services.

They particularly like red, orange and yellow coloured toys – make your own by adding food colouring to water bottles and hanging them so they swing! McDonald’s opening new drivethru restaurant in Gilesgate As IN&AROUND went to press, the fast-food giant McDonald’s was set to open the doors of its latest drive-thru restaurant in County Durham, with a recruitment drive also announced. The new site is close to Durham City on Dragon Lane, Gilesgate, and was set to open this month. Local newspaper The Northern Echo reported that the restaurant was already looking to hire for both full-time and part-time positions. It is expected that the new St Andrew’s Park eatery, which has been under construction for several months, will trade on a 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week basis. News of the latest McDonald’s branch was first confirmed in 2018. The company previously indicated that the restaurant would open in “early 2020”, before providing a May 2021 date last year.

32 | IN&AROUND

Providing the area with a welcome jobs boost A McDonald’s UK spokesperson said: “We’re delighted to be opening this new restaurant and we’re so looking forward to getting to know more of the local community.

“We’d like to thank our hardworking crew and our new customers in advance for their support and patience as we continually adapt to the safest ways of working during the pandemic.” The chain already has a presence in the Durham City area, in the form of a drive-thru restaurant at the Arnison Centre. The newspaper stated that the combination of full and part-time roles the company was advertising came with an April start date. The jobs were described as “fully flexible”, and were reportedly on offer to anyone over 18 years old, with salaries rising in line with the minimum wage.

FILM REVIEW

The comedic superhero has become a strong trope in film – with comic-book adaptations like Deadpool, Shazam! and The Lego Batman Movie delightfully puncturing holes in the customary self-seriousness of the superhero genre. However, even many of its “serious” additions in recent years – see Ant-Man – are noticeably self-knowing about the inherent ridiculousness of random, Lycra-clad members of the public taking it upon themselves to apprehend criminals. As a result, any new comedy superhero film has its work cut out to find something fresh and witty to say – something that the Netflix-exclusive Thunder Force, starring Melissa McCarthy and written and directed by her husband Ben Falcone, resolutely fails to do. In an interview, Falcone has said that his intention was simply to fill a superhero film with jokes rather than poke fun at the genre itself – but, even as a broad comedy, Thunder Force falls flat. It doesn’t help that Falcone dedicates about the first 45 minutes to a needlessly convoluted and elaborate preamble that leaves little room for effortless humour. In the alternate 1980s recalled by scientist Emily (played by Octavia Spencer as the straight woman to her bumbling friend, McCarthy’s Lydia), cosmic rays struck the world and imbued numerous sociopathic individuals with superpowers.

Later scenes work better, if only slightly. Lydia’s flirtatious run-in with “the Crab”, a pincer-handed half-Miscreant portrayed with a literal wink by Jason Bateman, echoes the hero-villain romance between Batman and Catwoman. Meanwhile, Bobby Cannavale plays a corrupt Lex Luthor type who has secretly recruited Miscreants to help him with his bid for the Chicago mayoralty.

Those people became known as “Miscreants” – but as the cosmic rays apparently and inexplicably left the “good guys” untouched, Emily has since worked hard to develop a formula that could give them superpowers and counter the Miscreant threat. Alas, after Emily finally perfects the formula, and only enough of it for one person at that, Lydia is accidentally injected with it during a visit to Emily’s Chicago lab.

However, these subplots reflect the core problem with Thunder Force: it hews so reverently to the established superhero film playbook that it struggles to find much it genuinely wants to mock. Rather than engaging with much of the silliness specific to superhero films, it’s more interested in Lydia talking with a mouth full of raw chicken slices or a minor character repeatedly messing up the delivery of a knock-knock joke. There’s little thunder to Thunder Force, but it lamentably feels forced all right.

The ensuing scenes as Emily helps Lydia to develop her newfound super strength are almost as laugh-free as the training montages in the purposefully po-faced Rocky films. The closest Thunder Force ever gets to truly funny here is when Lydia finds out to her dismay that, while she must take a series of torturous injections to hone her strength, Emily has to do little more than swallow a pill to gain the power of invisibility.

ADVENTURE VALLEY INVESTS IN NEW FACILITIES TO MAKE WELCOME RETURN The North East’s biggest family adventure park, has invested almost £200,000 to ensure families are welcomed back with an experience that was worth waiting for. Adventure Valley in Durham has utilised its downtime to invest in brand new state-of-the-art facilities for families and children to enjoy after months of lockdown, including £100,000 on a mini train ride that can take up to 14 passengers. To utilise more of its outdoor space, the park has also invested £80,000 in a new external play dome, complete with a climbing pyramid with three-dimensional nets at thrilling heights, bouncing routes, climbing walls and slides as well as £15,000 on a new outdoor aqua blaster, where children can fire water at different targets. Owner, Marco Calzini said: “Lockdown restrictions over the past 12 months have been an incredibly difficult time for us, yet we haven’t stood still. We wanted to ensure that when families do return to us, we give them an experience that was worth waiting for and even more fun and thrilling adventures. We are relieved to finally be opening our doors once again and cannot wait to welcome people back.”

BUSINESS

Adventure Valley gained business advice from Robson Laidler Accountants in Durham, who successfully secured the park the full amount of a Business Interruption Insurance Claim due to Covid-19, as well as strategy planning and cashflow forecasting to make investment decisions to futureproof the business. Marco said: “The business advisors at Robson Laidler are an integral part of our investment planning strategy, helping us to secure suitable funds and manage cashflow to enable us to make these decisions.” Robson Laidler director John Holbrook said: “It’s been difficult to see successful businesses such as Adventure Valley have to close their doors and stop trading due to the pandemic. We have worked closely with Marco to help his business not only survive during these times but prepare to come out the other side and thrive. Our aim is to make a positive difference to our clients and the greater community, and we are confident in the financial gain that this investment will bring to the business as well as the positive impact it will make to many families who are excited to have fun days out together again. As a father myself I cannot wait to bring my family to the park and try the new activities.”

Enjoy Your conservatory all year round Conservatories are a fantastic space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden, they are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know that, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually short lived and can only be enjoyed for two or three months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. At Thermos Roof, we have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons, the first to increase its insulating performance and secondly to enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in the winter as soon as you open the door the heat is sucked out of your room into the conservatory, and during the summer it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermos Roof we can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use into a room that you can enjoy all year round because the temperature is comfortable and constant, you will even be able to watch TV or use a computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that we can do this all in one day! With no mess! We retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it from the inside, finishing it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches perfectly with the rest of your conservatory construction. The materials we use are lightweight, therefore no roof strengthening is required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess and upheaval in your home. In addition to this the look and finish of your Thermos Roof will be as fresh in 10 years as it is now.

The performance of the lightweight insulation system will equal that of vastly more expensive options, with less mess and waste, and less time to install saving you thousands of pounds and allowing you to enjoy your conservatory immediately. We can install a Thermos Roof to conservatories of any size or shape transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein its use is not dictated by the external weather conditions, it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits, our team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter in the evenings by reflecting light and will give your conservatory that WOW factor, making it a great place to relax or work. All installations come with a 5 year warranty and we guarantee that you will be amazed with both the improved appearance and the insulating performance of your new roof. We offer a free quotation service for the installation of your Thermos Roof and should you require it we can also undertake maintenance works to repair or replace gutters, fascias, soffits, window sills, roof panels and leaking roofs. Please give us a call today to start the ball rolling to making full use of your Conservatory!

£6 million Chester-le-Street flood prevention scheme now completed Work has now finished on a major scheme designed to attract more visitors to a County Durham market town, while minimising the risk of flooding. The project has opened up a 90-metre stretch of the Cong Burn, which has run underneath the town’s Market Place for over half a century. The scheme has not only helped to make the reoccurrence of past flooding problems in the area less likely, but has also allowed for a more attractive public area to be created, including new seating and open spaces. Joint funding for the undertaking came from Durham County Council, the Environment Agency, and the European Regional Development Fund. “An economic boost to the town” Durham County Council leader, Councillor Simon Henig, commented: “This is a very significant scheme for Chester-le-Street. Not only will it reduce the risk of flooding to the town, but it will also help to reinvigorate the town centre. “The market has moved forward to a much more prominent position closer to the front street and the whole area has a much more welcoming feel. “With businesses set to open following lockdown, we’re hoping the refurbished market place will 44 | IN&AROUND

offer an economic boost to the town, supporting the recovery process. “And, looking further ahead, the potential to hold events in the market place offers an added opportunity to attract visitors who may not have considered coming to Chester-le-Street before.” Helping to combat a longstanding flooding risk Chester-le-Street is no stranger to flooding; in June 2012, for instance, a severe storm affected more than 100 homes and businesses. The Cong Burn, also often referred to as Chester Burn, has been partly blamed for the problem. The local authority and the Environment Agency therefore decided to carry out the flood prevention scheme, in partnership with Esh Construction. The project has included works near Cone Terrace and Menceforth Cottages, as well as the extension of the flood wall to the west of the viaduct. Another part of the work has been the removal of a large combined sewer from the culvert downstream of the market place – a move that has boosted flow capacity and lowered the risk of blockages. The Market Place itself, meanwhile, has had its fixed market stalls removed, the area also being landscaped with new footpaths and seating.

46 | IN&AROUND

Line a 20cm cake tin or dish (either a square or rectangle works well) with cling film, leaving an overhang. Whip 500ml of the cream, the vanilla, orange blossom water and 125g icing sugar with an electric whisk until thick and billowy.

STEP 2

Add a layer of biscuits to the tin, and spoon over some of the cream, about 1cm thick all over. Add a layer of strawberry slices, then repeat with the cream, biscuits and strawberries until you fill the tin, finishing on a layer of biscuit. You’ll have some strawberries left over to serve. Press everything down well so every biscuit is covered in cream. Cover and chill overnight.

Makes 14

STEP 3

To serve, flip the tin onto a serving plate, and remove the cling film. Whip the remaining 100ml cream with 1 tbsp icing sugar and dollop on top of the cake, swirling it around. Top with the remaining strawberry slices in lines, sift over the remaining 1 tbsp icing sugar, and sprinkle the biscuit crumbs in between the rows of strawberries. Cut into slices to serve.
