Welcome
Why Advertise?
to the November issue of IN&AROUND!
When it comes to growing your business, promotion is everything. At IN&AROUND Magazine, we offer a range of advertising packages that put your brand in front of thousands of potential customers.
November’s just about Guy Fawkes Night and Christmas shopping, right? Wrong. As you can discover in this month’s IN&AROUND, there’s plenty to see and do during the penultimate month of 2018.
Our free magazine is delivered to over 20,000 homes and businesses across Chester-leStreet, Derwentside and Durham every month – and our readership continues to grow. With solutions to suit all budgets and requirements, from quarter pages to front page ads, we can help you make an impact. What’s more, with every order, we offer a complimentary design service to ensure that your messages are delivered in the most attractive and eyecatching manner possible.
You could, for instance, see the latest big-screen blockbuster, and in the absence of another James Bond instalment for a while yet, you’ll have to settle for Daniel Craig’s slightly less elegant brother in espionage, Rowan Atkinson, who returns in Johnny English Strikes Again (reviewed and rated on pages 24-25). Alternatively, if you feel like getting adventurous yourself, why not break out the typewriter and start rustling up that novel you’ve always wanted to pen? We give you the lowdown on National Novel Writing Month – or NaNoWriMo, as it’s also known – on page 28.
Whether you’re launching a new product, running a promotion or would like to find out more about how IN&AROUND can work for you, call us on 0191 388 2698.
Oh, fine – when we said ‘adventurous’, you thought we were about to recommend something in the great outdoors. Well, our regular contributor Alex Nelson has been doing just that, visiting Sterling in Scotland for his latest column (page 34).
In the spotlight.

That’s it for now – happy reading, and we hope you will be flicking through our pages once again when our December issue comes out!

JAK HQ PUTS TEESSIDE HOSPICE LOGO ON THE SHIRTS OF THORNABY ODDFELLOWS F.C. Fans of Sunday League football might have noticed a new logo adorning the Thornaby Oddfellows F.C. players’ shirts recently. That’s because, in sponsoring the club, Jak HQ has placed Teesside Hospice’s logo on the shirts. Thornaby Oddfellows F.C. is a member of the Stockton Sunday Football League, where the club is in the highest of the league’s four divisions, the Premiership. Thornaby has soared in the Premiership this year while also competing in the DFA Champions League and Ian Gorman Memorial Trophy. Thornaby Oddfellows F.C., Jak HQ and Teesside Hospice: three winning teams County Durham-based digital marketing agency, Jak HQ, has become the football team’s new sponsor, paying for all of the club’s kits and printing. However, out of goodwill, they have printed Teesside Hospice’s logo - rather than their own - on the front of the kit. This exciting new deal with Thornaby Oddfellows F.C. has also seen Jak HQ design the club’s first-ever badge, which features on the new shirts. From their base in Chester-le-Street, Jak HQ’s digital marketing agency provides services for a wide range of 6 | IN&AROUND
businesses. These services include graphic design, website design, search engine optimisation, PR, social media marketing and copywriting. High-profile clients with which Jak HQ have worked include Crimestoppers, Sunderland Live, Biochemica and Teesside Hospice itself. Teesside Hospice is a provider of palliative care for people who are aged over 18 and live with a lifelimiting illness which is no longer possible to cure. Teesside Hospice offers inpatient care, day hospice and bereavement counselling services as well as outpatient appointments. The Middlesbrough-based hospice also runs a clinic for the treatment of the chronic condition lymphoedema. “We look forward to helping both Thornaby Oddfellows F.C. and Teesside Hospice with this exciting new sponsorship deal. Teesside Hospice does some amazing work and we’re delighted to be able to offer a new avenue for awareness in the Teesside area.” Benjamin Kerry, Owner, Jak HQ Limited.

IT’S HUG A BEAR DAY ON 7 TH NOVEMBER! No, we aren’t suggesting that you should attempt to hug a living, breathing bear – on 7th November or any other day, for that matter. Trying to get your hands around an actual bear’s bulky, hairy body could turn out very badly for you. However, on Hug a Bear Day, you are encouraged to comfort yourself with a much smaller and cuddlier type of bear: a teddy bear! It might be one of the cutest annual celebrations in which you ever take part… The early history of the teddy bear We all know that teddy bears are soft toys meant to resemble bears, but from where did the “teddy” part of the name originate? It actually comes from Theodore Roosevelt, who was President of the United States from 1901 until 1909. Much to his own loathing, he was commonly referred to as “Teddy” – and while on a bear hunting trip in Mississippi in November 1902, he resisted suggestions that he ought to shoot a bear that had been seized for Roosevelt by his attendants. This incident inspired Clifford Berryman to draw a political cartoon that depicted Roosevelt with the bear, which was published in the newspaper The Washington Post on 16th November 1902. As a result of seeing the cartoon, Russianborn businessman Morris Michtom decided to make a teddy bear. The resulting toy, in the visual form of a small bear cub, was called “Teddy’s bear” after Roosevelt gave permission for his name to be used. This initial teddy bear quickly picked up popularity. It isn’t as clear exactly how Hug a Bear Day came to be. It’s possible that it was first conceived due to the previously 14 | IN&AROUND
mentioned bear hunting incident involving Theodore Roosevelt. However, whereas the hunting trip in that story happened on 14th November, Hug a Bear Day is on 7th November. Intriguingly, the concept of a “bear hug” actually has a much earlier history than that of the teddy bear, with the term initially being recorded in 1846. We can bear-ly believe the choice of teddy bears today Much of the appeal of teddy bears today can be attributed to their huge variety. Although early teddy bears were given beady eyes and extended snouts to closely resemble real bears, teddy bears in their modern form have larger eyes and smaller noses to enhance their cuteness. Unsurprisingly given their historical significance and – by modern standards – unusual appearance, early teddy bears are very collectible. We could say similarly of newer teddy bears manufactured to look like various species of bear – like polar bears, grizzly bears and pandas. If you have a child, they might not only have been attracted to a particular teddy bear from an early age, but also continue to regularly carry that toy around with them today. There’s nothing wrong with that – not least because that little bear can be a great source of comfort and companionship. Your little one can show their appreciation for their furry chum by giving them a big, friendly hug on Hug a Bear Day!

A HAPPY 151ST BIRTHDAY TO ONE OF THE TRUE PIONEERS OF MODERN SCIENCE For so many people today, the name ‘Marie Curie’ is most synonymous with the registered charity of that name that provides care and support to people with terminal illnesses and their families. The charity shops and hospices under the Marie Curie name are probably familiar to most of us here in County Durham, with the closest of the latter to our region to be found in Newcastle. The Marie Curie charity was established in the UK in 1948 – the same year as the National Health Service (NHS) – and was the successor of the Marie Curie Hospital that had opened in 1930 and was more or less destroyed by a bomb in 1944. The name ‘Marie Curie’, however, didn’t come out of the blue. The hospital had been named in honour of one of the most justly celebrated figures in 21st-century science, the Polish-born and French-naturalised physicist and chemist Marie Curie, who was still alive at the time of the hospital’s foundation and had been born Maria Salomea Skłodowska on 7th November 1867. Why are we all so indebted to Marie Curie? Curie’s life would have been staggering enough if it had been marked solely by worldly accolades. She was not only the first woman to win a Nobel Prize when she claimed the physics award alongside her husband Pierre and physicist Henri Becquerel in 1903, but she was also the first person, and the only woman, to win one twice. This occurred in 1911, when she was given the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. However, Marie Curie certainly did not stand for ambition and prizes alone. One of the most famous things she ever said, after all, was that “You cannot hope to build a better 18 | IN&AROUND
world without improving the individuals. To that end, each of us must work for his own improvement, and at the same time share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful.” Only someone with such a philosophy could have been as moved as Marie Curie was to conduct pioneering research on radioactivity, culminating in the development of the theory of radioactivity, or to discover techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes. Her other signature achievements included the discovery of two elements, polonium and radium, and the world’s first studies into the treatment of neoplasms, conducted using radioactive isotopes. Such was Curie’s level of devotion to helping others, that when she helped to equip ambulances with x-ray equipment during World War One, she would drive them to the front lines herself. Later life also saw her become the head of the International Red Cross’s radiological service and hold training courses for medical orderlies and doctors in the latest techniques. A truly remarkable woman Sadly, it was also Curie’s level of sacrifice that would ultimately hasten her end. From the late 1920s, her health began to deteriorate, and on 4th July 1934, she passed away due to leukaemia caused by exposure to high-energy radiation from her research.

FILM REVIEW
JOHNNY ENGLISH STRIKES AGAIN It seems like every new Johnny English film is greeted with a round of withering critical pasting – but these days, people know what they’re getting with a Johnny English film. There’s never any attempt at an in-depth Shakespearean insight into the human condition, just lots of slapstick and buffoonery from the world’s favourite hapless Bond-alike since Austin Powers went out of fashion. The usual staples of the comedy spy genre are here: fancy gadgets, exotic locales, a glamorous love interest and at the centre of it all, acting legend Rowan Atkinson in his third stint as Johnny English. Not that the film starts out with him in his familiar guise as the spy. Instead, he’s actually working as a geography teacher when a cyber attack reveals the identities of all of the UK’s intelligence agents, forcing the Secret Service to bring Johnny English back out of retirement for a crucial mission. The world hasn’t been graced – or disgraced, as many critics might put it – with a new Johnny English film since the release of Johnny English Reborn in 2011. There are certainly many seemingly topical elements of the new film’s narrative, from the cyber attack angle right through to the embattled 24 | IN&AROUND
and sullen-faced Theresa May-esque British Prime Minister played by Emma Thompson. Then there’s the young, American tech billionaire called Jason Volta – played with relish by Jake Lacy – who pitches supposedly the ideal solution to sealing the recently opened glaring gap in the country’s digital infrastructure. In case his cocky swagger in the early scenes isn’t hint enough, yes, he’s hiding a shadowy secret (now there’s a role reversal from a well-worn Hollywood cliché – we’ve got the large team of Brits as the heroes and the script’s only American character as the villain). As English and his sidekick Bough (played by Ben Miller, whose character is making a welcome and long overdue return after his inexplicable absence in Johnny English Reborn) attempt to track down the culprit for the cyber attack, they even come across a former Bond girl. It’s the French actress Olga Kurylenko, who you might remember from the 2008 Bond film Quantum of Solace. Here, she plays Russian lady Ophelia, who keeps our two leads guessing as to whether she is friend or foe. As with the previous films, there are plenty of well-executed slapstick set-pieces, one particular highlight seeing English testing a virtual-reality

simulation of Volta’s mansion while unknowingly, in the real world, assaulting a man at a deli-counter with a pair of baguettes. However, you suspect that English’s disdain for modern inventions like smartphones is shared by the filmmakers, with our hero even ending up dressed literally as a knight in shining armour. It all adds up to good-natured fun. Craig Lenaghan

NOVEMBER IS NANOWRIMO: NATIONAL NOVEL WRITING MONTH!
Everyone has a book in them, so the saying goes – but if you suspect this book is a novel in your case, how are you supposed to prise it out? You could start by signing up for a little competition that will be running for the whole of this month. We are referring to National Novel Writing Month – or NaNoWriMo, the wittily abbreviated name by which you will probably most grow to know it. What’s the premise? Basically, after optionally using the official NaNoWriMo website to register your upcoming participation, you have to write at least 50,000 words of a novel during the space of November. That’s, on average, at least 1,667 words a day – and yes, it’s definitely achievable. Whether you are a veteran writer or merely mulling over dipping your toes into the world of fiction writing, participating in NaNoWriMo can effectively kickstart your efforts on your next long-form writing project. It could also lead you to take inspiration from several local literary icons… Who could inspire you on your novel-writing journey? You must have occasionally flicked through the pages of a novel without having even the faintest idea that someone from our own enchanting little corner of England penned the words. One of the region’s most critically acclaimed scribes is Pat Barker, who was born in Thornaby-on-Tees. Barker, who has also long been a resident of Durham, is noted for her unsentimental depictions of working-class women’s lives in the 1980s novels Union Street, Blow Your House Down and Liza’s England. She then made the First World War the backdrop for her ‘90s Regeneration trilogy. However, Barker has long been just one member of a 28 | IN&AROUND
flourishing scene of novelists in the North East. The late Catherine Cookson hailed from South Shields, while Jarrow was the setting for The Fifteen Streets, one of the many novels that led her to clock up over 100 million in book sales. Many other examples of esteemed North East novelists abound – including thriller author Sheila Quigley, whose time living in Houghton-le-Spring has inspired her work. The crime writer Minette Walters, meanwhile, graduated from Durham University’s Trevelyan College in 1971. So, back to NaNoWriMo. What should you be aware of? There are a few rules to carefully heed if you intend to give NaNoWriMo a try. One is that you truly mustn’t start writing your novel before 1st November, although you are still allowed to plan and make extensive preparatory notes in the run-up. Another crucial rule is that any additions to your novel after 30th November are not valid for NaNoWriMo. However, to “win” the “competition” (you wouldn’t be eligible for any official NaNoWriMo prizes in any case), you don’t need to have completed the entire novel by then – just the 50,000 words. You can then add more and polish up your novel later. Ultimately, NaNoWriMo’s objective is just to give you an excuse to stop procrastinating and start penning that novel! If you want to register online to track your progress, you can do so at https://nanowrimo.org.

STIRLING
I was preparing this article on a train to Edinburgh for a meeting, and had in my mind’s eye a walk over Old Stirling Bridge, up towards the Wallace Monument, back through Cambuskenneth to the abbey ruins and over the footbridge to Stirling city. Amazingly, when I spoke to the man sitting next to me in the meeting, it transpired that he lived on Stirling Riverside and did this very same walk (minus the climb to the Wallace Monument) with his dog regularly. The east coast main line operator LNER offers one train a day to Stirling, the Highland Chieftain service to Inverness which is a diesel hauled IC125 locomotive, soon to be replaced by the new Azuma trains. It leaves Darlington Monday to Friday at 1423 (Newcastle 1454) arriving Stirling 1719, and the return journey is at 1032 from Stirling, arriving 1253 at Newcastle and 1324 at Darlington. To make the most of your day or days in Stirling you can use an earlier train north changing to Scotrail at Edinburgh, and return home later, and there are plenty of cheap seats on this route. Different timings apply on Saturdays and Sundays for the Highland Chieftain. Stirling was created a royal burgh by King David I of Scotland in 1130, and our present Queen gave it city status at her Golden Jubilee in 2002. Stirling, “like a huge brooch clasps the Highlands and Lowlands together”, and it is often quoted that “he who holds Stirling, holds Scotland, as a result of its key position as the traditional lowest bridging point of the River Forth. I often visited the city as part of a single day tour for my railway station apprentices covering Edinburgh and Glasgow too, but a full day can be enjoyed in Stirling alone, visiting the Castle high on a rock, the jail (closed for the winter) and the Wallace monument just north of the town, easily walkable or use a local bus. The oldest known citizen of the Stirling area is Torbrex Tam (Torbrex is a suburban area of Stirling), whose bones were dated between 2152 and 2021 BC. The most significant battles in the area, both of which were lost by the English, were in 1297 at Stirling Bridge and 1314 at Bannockburn involving “Braveheart” William Wallace and Robert the Bruce respectively. The Church of the Holy Rude is one of the town’s most important buildings, founded in 1129, and reputed to be the only surviving church in the UK excepting Westminster Abbey to have held a coronation. On 29 July 1567, the infant son of Mary, Queen of Scots, was anointed James VI of Scotland in the church, later to be King James I of England from the union of crowns in 1603 to his death in 1625. The city has a population of nearly 50,000, and it is an important regional centre with about half of Scotland’s population living within an hour’s travel time. The Castle is open through the winter, administered by Historic Scotland, and the tall Wallace Monument too. The Museum and Art Gallery is free to enter, and also open during the winter. Cambuskenneth Abbey, a village across the River Forth accessed by footbridge, is where William Wallace’s remains were buried, but not until after he had been taken to London’s Smithfield in chains, hung, drawn and quartered and his head, dipped in tar, was exhibited on London Bridge. The giant monument, erected in 1869, which can be climbed by visitors, is a more fitting memorial to one of Scotland’s most famous sons. Photographs by Melissa Middlemiss, Slimming World Consultant

TACKLING HATE CRIME IN COUNTY DURHAM:
AN INTERVIEW WITH DURHAM POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER RON HOGG Hate crime can be hugely traumatic for its victims. The term “hate crime” refers to prejudice-motivated crime aimed at people due to their membership - or perceived membership - of a particular social group or race. However, the tide is turning against hate crime in County Durham.
especially relevant in 2018 due to the continuing lack of awareness about hate crime. Some people, he noted, still make jokes that they don’t realise are hate crimes.
We recently focused on this issue in an interview with Ron Hogg, the police and crime commissioner of Durham Constabulary. Hogg reported many encouraging signs in the fight against hate crime. How has hate crime changed over the years? Though hate crime in County Durham and Darlington had trebled since 2012, the last 12 months saw a 25% decrease. Hogg particularly acknowledged the efforts of the antiracism educational charity Show Racism the Red Card, which has been actively promoting its message in local schools. However, there is no room for complacency. Hogg noted that, both in our area and nationally, disability hate crime has increased. To combat this worrying trend locally, Durham Constabulary has been working with Gordon Pybus, Chair of Darlington Association on Disability, a voluntary and charitable organisation standing up for interests of disabled people. This year, National Hate Crime Awareness Week ran from 13 to 20 October, and Hogg admitted that the week remains 40 | IN&AROUND
Future strategies for curbing hate crime Hogg said that the average resident of County Durham or Darlington can help to reduce hate crime by reporting it to the police or a third party and supporting isolated young people. Victims and witnesses must report any hate crime - while, for the future, the constabulary has unveiled a Joint Hate Crime Action Plan involving the Darlington Association on Disability and the Durham Agency Against Crime. IN&AROUND’S FIRST NETWORKING EVENT RAISES £215 FOR WILLOW BURN HOSPICE At IN&AROUND, we are delighted to support many businesses and communities around the North East. We even recently got to meet many leaders of these organisations at our first networking event in Chester-le-Street. The event was held at Chester-le-Street Cricket Club - where, to our joy, we raised a massive £215 for the Derwentside-based Willow Burn Hospice. A very successful raffle at an exciting event You might have seen us advertising the networking event in the run-up to the big day back in September. You might even have come along to the event - which, after all, provided a great opportunity for business and community figures to meet and forge new partnerships. We forged a partnership of our own with Willow Burn Hospice, a local charity providing an exceptional standard of care for people with life-limiting illnesses in Derwentside and County Durham. As the event got underway, we held a charity raffle offering a wide array of exciting prizes - including one-night stays for two with breakfast at Lumley Castle and 42 | IN&AROUND
Beamish Hall and holiday vouchers from STA Travel. Many of the attendees were obviously easily tempted by the raffle tickets, which were each priced at just £5. By the time the event was all wrapped up, we had raised £215. Last month, the raffle money was collected from our office by a delighted Paul Jackson, Chairman of Willow Burn Hospice. Funding for Willow Burn’s vital work The following day, we also received a letter from Willow Burn Hospice, thanking us for the donation - and we once again want to thank everyone who bought a raffle ticket at the networking event. We hope to welcome all of you at our next event - and, in the meantime, you can continue to financially support Willow Burn Hospice by donating through the charity’s website at www.willow-burn.co.uk.

The Thriving Chester-le-Street task group of The Chester-le-Street & District Area Action Partnership (AAP) have been working hard to develop a programme for this year’s Chester-le-Street town centre Christmas tree lights switch-on. In a change to events of previous year’s and in response to requests from local businesses, this year’s event will take place on Saturday 1st December to coincide with Small Business Saturday. The dazzling events will commence at 1pm with entertainment at various locations throughout the town centre (outside of the Queen’s Head, outside of the Lambton Arms and in the Market Place) continually until searchlights will illuminate the Market Place at 4pm signifying the start of the main event. Entertainment will be provided throughout the day by professional acts - ‘There’s Nothing Like a Dame’ and ‘Fairly Famous’ as well as the North Tyneside Steel Band. The Christmas tree lights will be switched on by the winners of this year’s colouring competition delivered by the Chester-le-Street & District Business Association in conjunction with Tesco and Wilko. The opportunity to participate in the competition is extended to all primary school children in the AAP area. 50 | IN&AROUND

HOW DID KEYHOLE RESIDENTIAL START OUT? After nearly 13 years of working in the Property Sales and Lettings Industry across the North East of England, we felt that it was the right time to take the big step and start off Keyhole Residential – our aim being to really treat our customers as individuals and provide a friendly and personable service at a fair price to people looking to buy, sell or rent their home … and so “Keyhole Residential” was born… How did your personal involvement in the business come about? We believe that buying, selling or renting your home should be one of the most exciting things you ever do during your lifetime, but it can turn out to be one of the most stressful things too and for that reason we wanted to establish an estate agency that is here to support our customers to make the experience as exciting and enjoyable as possible. We’ve always had a passion for selling and renting properties (which I guess helps a little too!) How would you describe your role at Keyhole Residential? At Keyhole Residential we pride ourselves on providing an outstanding customer experience to our clients, whether you are looking to buy, sell or rent your home, we want to support you every step of the way. We always aim to keep our customers fully updated throughout the process and we tailor our services to meet your individual needs and budget. The Keyhole Residential website states that “we believe in service, not volume”. Can you expand on that? I guess this all goes back to our basic desire to provide our clients with a great customer experience. We’ve seen examples of businesses grow too big and loose sight of what’s important and not be able to provide that great level of service that customers really want. By only taking on the number of properties to sell or rent that we know we can handle effectively, we will always be able to focus on what’s important to us… and that’s our customers. What distinguishes your agency’s service from that of a larger agency with national coverage? We are a local, family run estate agency and we’d like to think that we know the local market very well having 54 | IN&AROUND
lived in the area for our entire lives, yet we also have national coverage in the sense that all of our properties are advertised across the UK on major online property portals such as Rightmove. This helps us to find the best buyer or tenant for your home, so I guess you could say (to coin a phrase) “We are a local estate agent but with a national presence”. What do people most often forget to ask or check when viewing a property? Quite often when viewing a property we get so excited and engrossed in the moment, that we sometimes forget to ask some important questions about the property itself. Some of the common questions people forget to ask are; 1. Is the property Freehold or Leasehold? 2. Is the asking price negotiable? 3. Have the owners found anywhere to move to? As much as people forget to ask these things, you can always call the agent to ask as that’s what we are here for! Do you have any particularly underrated or overlooked advice for people seeking to sell or let a property in the North East? It’s important to remember that all properties are sellable. One thing that really helps to sell a property is presenting your home in the best possible light and you can play a big part in achieving this by decluttering your home and ensuring it is clean and tidy ready for viewings. This along with choosing the right estate agent who works for you, can really help to get you moving. What do you think the future holds for Keyhole Residential? As Abraham Lincoln once said: “The best way to predict the future is to create it” and that’s exactly what we aim to do at Keyhole Residential – we hope to be the agent of choice for people in the local area and recognised as one of the best agents in and around Chester-Le-Street.

Award winning store launches in Durham
A leading North East fashion retailer that has just been honoured with the Drapers Menswear Retailer of the Year 2018/19, has launched its newest store in Durham City. Bringing a taste of Shoreditch - the coolest and most fashionable part of East London - to the North East, Psyche has opened the doors to a luxury designer menswear store at 20-21 Silver Street, situated on the riverbank beside Framwelgate Bridge, and overlooked by the historic Durham Cathedral. Established in the region for more than 36 years, the company's reputation is based on cutting-edge design and innovation, and it has won numerous awards, including the much-coveted Drapers Fashion Awards on two separate occasions, FHM magazine's Retailer of the Year, GQ Magazine's Best Menswear Shop and runner up to Harrods in Department Store of the Year 2012. It is now bringing its iconic style to the residents of Durham, featuring more than 200 of the most sought-after brands in men's fashion carefully sourced and hand-picked from across the globe including C.P Company, KENZO, Paul Smith, Armani, Hugo Boss, Clarks Originals, Barbour and Paul Smith. Durham Store Manager, Brian Echlin, said: "Psyche is thrilled to have opened in the centre of Durham city. We aim to bring contemporary and designer menswear to the people of Durham and add new collections daily. We have just been voted as the Drapers Menswear Retailer of the Year 2018/19. Psyche Durham is the destination store for the modern male of the North East." Durham's high-end store is the company's third designer retail business in the North East, with its agship store in Middlesbrough boasting more than 40,000 square feet of top fashion, and a second boutique opened in Middlesbrough in 2015. Ask a member of staff about the Psyche loyalty card to receive 10% off all future purchases. Shop online or instore.

Dolly Alderton: Everything I Know About Love (Live), Gala Theatre, Durham
What’s on
November
As a young journalist who was a dating columnist for The Sunday Times from January 2015 to February 2017, Dolly Alderton unsurprisingly knows more than a few things about love. She’s going to share them, too, at what is essentially a stage adaptation of her first book, Everything I Know About Love, published in February 2018. Her relatable stories and observations will be retold at Durham’s Gala Theatre from 7:30pm on Saturday, 3 November.
NT Live: The Madness of George III, Gala Theatre, Durham Despite his many admirable qualities, George III is often most remembered by history as the king who lost America and slowly descended into madness. In this new adaptation of the Alan Bennett play, we can yet again see the king’s tragic fall from grace. Mark Gatiss, an Olivier Award winner, plays George III in a performance staged at Nottingham Palace but broadcast live to Durham’s Gala Theatre from 7pm on Tuesday, 20 November.
Christmas at Beamish Launch Parade 2018, Beamish Museum Every year, Beamish Museum’s festive evenings sell out quicker than you could utter “Ho, ho… no!” Surely enough, this year, those tickets flew out more rapidly than Santa’s sleigh on the night of Christmas Eve, but you can still see the beardy man himself at this parade on Saturday, 17 November from 1pm. For this and other daytime Christmas at Beamish events that follow until 24 December, you can use a Beamish Museum Unlimited Pass.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Gala Theatre, Durham The panto at the Gala Theatre in Durham annually has a refreshingly down-to-earth feel compared to many other pantomimes in the region. Forget hype-filled appearances from celebrity leads – the focus here is very much on the usual great writing of Gala regulars Neil Armstrong and Paul Hartley. They respectively play taxhappy villain Rupert Von Rottenchops and Chester the Jester in this year’s round of performances which also star Lauren Waine as Snow White.
Stewart Francis: Into The Punset, Tyne Theatre & Opera House, Newcastle There are plenty of competitors for the crown of punmeister extraordinaire – but, by our reckoning, Stewart Francis has the title firmly in the bag. Well, he would if his current tour wasn’t set to be his last ever. Catch him at the Tyne Theatre & Opera House from 8pm on Wednesday, 28 November before he finally abdicates the punning throne while the likes of Tim Vine and Milton Jones wait eagerly to seize it.
Jess Glynne, Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle Flame-haired singer-songwriter Jess Glynne has come a long way since her breakthrough into stardom with her guest vocals on the Clean Bandit song “Rather Be” in 2014. Her debut studio album as a solo artist, I Cry When I Laugh, was released in 2015 to a number one placing on the UK album chart. She will be singing plenty of hits at the Metro Radio Arena from 6pm on Saturday, 24 November.
