Former bingo hall in Durham potentially to be demolished in favour of student accommodation A planning application has been lodged for a former bingo hall in the city of Durham’s Belmont ward to be demolished, with a student apartment complex proposed to be purpose-built in its place. The site would be complemented by an array of parking and servicing facilities also included in the plans. Planning documents recently submitted to Durham County Council indicate that the site near Sherburn Road closed during the first COVID-19 lockdown last year. Though the venue reopened in July, another closure followed 18 weeks later as a result of further lockdown restrictions. According to a design and access statement sent alongside the application, the building’s thenowners opted to sell it in 2020 after concluding that another reopening was “not a viable business opportunity”. One factor, the statement added, was “competition from larger-scale operators.” The new plans, if approved by the council, would usher in the creation of about 138 en-suite bedrooms – including seven accessible bedrooms – across four floors. The converted site would also include a cinema room, gym and bike storage room for students, along with a courtyard divided into parking spaces – one of which a disabled space – for 15 cars. The proposed development was detailed in a ‘meeting house needs statement’ that reached council planners’ hands. According to this document, the work would assist in overcoming a “clear shortage of bespoke student accommodation within Durham City.” Meanwhile, the design and access statement specifies: “To the ground floor the properties ancillary accommodation; including gym and common room is located with a secure reception to the main entrance. “Some student accommodation is also located on the ground floor, but the majority of this lies on the first, second and third floors of the building. 8 | IN&AROUND

“Generally student accommodation is arranged into clusters of between five to seven en-suite bedrooms located with a shared common room consisting of kitchen, dining space and living space.” Though most recently used as a bingo hall, the building earmarked for demolition initially opened in 1938 as the Majestic Cinema. In the decades since, the building has also served as a boxing gym and skateboard arena. In 2018, Apollo Bingo managers held an exhibition at the building to mark its 80th anniversary – with memorabilia dating back to the site’s cinema days on display. The artefacts shown included a photograph of a 1939 visit paid to the cinema by King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth, the late Queen Mother. The student accommodation plan for the former Apollo Bingo site still awaits approval at the time of writing, with a final decision expected by early August. For further information about the planning application or to follow its progress, please visit Durham County Council’s planning portal, which is accessible through the council’s website at www.durham.gov.uk. The search reference to use is DM/21/01611/FPA.

Wild thing, you make my heart sing “happy birthday” to Maurice Sendak If you’ve read the children’s picture book Where the Wild Things Are, originally published in 1963, you’ve also seen some of the best-known illustrations crafted by the American writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak, who was born on 10th June, 1928. He passed away in 2012, leaving the world a legacy of enchanting literary and artistic work for successive generations of children to enjoy. Though born in New York City’s Brooklyn borough to Polish Jewish immigrant parents, Sendak lost members of his extended family to the Holocaust. This unhappy childhood later inspired the darker aspects of his picture books – including Where the Wild Things Are, which tells the story of a young boy called Max who sails to an island populated by frightening beasts. While the textual side of the story consists of only 338 words in total, chunks of prose within the book’s pages are interspersed with fascinating imagery of the “Wild Things”. Originally, these were going to be wild horses until Sendak realised he didn’t know how to draw them – leading his editor Ursula Nordstrom to suggest that he switch to the more ambiguous “Wild Things”. These were caricatures of Sendak’s aunts and uncles, and originally drawn in his youth in response to these relatives chaotically stopping by his family’s Brooklyn home on Sunday evenings. In a Guardian interview in 2011, Sendak recalled perceiving these relatives, with their “crazy faces and wild eyes”, only as “grotesques” – because, as a child, he was not aware of their desperate and tragic background. 14 | IN&AROUND

According to Sendak, the book was initially reviewed negatively upon its original publication, and even banned in libraries. However, Where the Wild Things Are grew in reputation as children sought out the book and critics reappraised it. Writing for TIME in 2009, Mary Pols wrote of the book’s “grounding effect”, noting how Max, after indulging his “wild side”, is “pulled back by a belief in parental love to a supper ‘still hot’, balancing the seesaw of fear and comfort.” Decades after Where the Wild Things Are was first published, its influence has continued to permeate popular culture. When English singersongwriter Siouxsie Sioux recorded a cover version of the Troggs song “Wild Thing” with her second band The Creatures, she included the new rendition on an EP titled Wild Things – so-called as Creatures bassist Steven Severin believed it sounded like something the “Wild Things” of Where the Wild Things Are would have danced to on their island. Other picture books Sendak wrote for children included 1970’s In the Night Kitchen and 1981’s Outside Over There. He also illustrated other authors’ works, including Else Holmelund Minarik’s Little Bear books. However, Where the Wild Things Are remains Sendak’s most famous work – and was adapted into a critically-acclaimed film directed by Spike Jonze and released to cinemas in late 2009, less than three years before Sendak’s death in Connecticut on 8th May, 2012.

Enjoy Your conservatory all year round Conservatories are a fantastic space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden, they are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know that, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually short lived and can only be enjoyed for two or three months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. At Thermos Roof, we have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons, the first to increase its insulating performance and secondly to enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in the winter as soon as you open the door the heat is sucked out of your room into the conservatory, and during the summer it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermos Roof we can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use into a room that you can enjoy all year round because the temperature is comfortable and constant, you will even be able to watch TV or use a computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that we can do this all in one day! With no mess! We retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it from the inside, finishing it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches perfectly with the rest of your conservatory construction. The materials we use are lightweight, therefore no roof strengthening is required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess and upheaval in your home. In addition to this the look and finish of your Thermos Roof will be as fresh in 10 years as it is now.

The performance of the lightweight insulation system will equal that of vastly more expensive options, with less mess and waste, and less time to install saving you thousands of pounds and allowing you to enjoy your conservatory immediately. We can install a Thermos Roof to conservatories of any size or shape transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein its use is not dictated by the external weather conditions, it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits, our team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter in the evenings by reflecting light and will give your conservatory that WOW factor, making it a great place to relax or work. All installations come with a 5 year warranty and we guarantee that you will be amazed with both the improved appearance and the insulating performance of your new roof. We offer a free quotation service for the installation of your Thermos Roof and should you require it we can also undertake maintenance works to repair or replace gutters, fascias, soffits, window sills, roof panels and leaking roofs. Please give us a call today to start the ball rolling to making full use of your Conservatory!

Travel cost covered at New College Durham When you’re living on a student budget every penny counts. That’s why New College Durham’s travel scheme covers the cost of getting to and from college for its students. All 16 to 19-year-olds on full time courses who live more than three miles from the college can apply for a bus pass. This allows them to travel to and from college without charge using Go North East or Arriva bus services.

“It’s really great having a student bus pass. It has made me feel more independent and less reliant on others. It makes travelling so much easier and simpler.”

With the average price of a student bus pass in County Durham standing at around £70 a month, the travel scheme offers a huge saving for all eligible students.

Students can find out more about the scheme online at https://www.newcollegedurham.ac.uk/ full-time-further-education/studying-furthereducation/rewards/flex-and-travel/. Full details, including terms and conditions, are available on the website. Applications open on 24 June 2021.

Kaitlyn Ramsay is studying A-Level Biology, Chemistry and Psychology at the college. She said:

For those wishing to travel by car, the college offers 450 free parking spaces.

Home Reach: the key to home ownership At Home Reach, we are dedicated to making home ownership possible to everyone, helping people to be able to afford the house of their dreams. With properties located in Durham, Darlington, across the North East and the rest of the UK, Home Reach is the key to home ownership. Part Buy – Part Rent with Home Reach Home Reach helps people who want to get into the property market to part buy - part rent a home. In other words, Home Reach helps you to buy a share of a new build property and pay monthly rent of 2.75% of the unsold value on the part that you don’t buy. Your budget decides the percentage share and size of your home. For example, you might wish to purchase shares up to 75% of your new home, which will allow you to live in the property as if you have bought it outright and you will be granted a 125-year lease. In time, you have the opportunity to buy the rest of your home and stop paying rent In the future, you can buy more of your home, at which point you will stop paying rent on that part of the house, making homes accessible to all. This is known as staircasing. So, if you had lost all hope in buying the house of your dreams which might

otherwise have been a little too expensive, get in touch with Home Reach today to check your eligibility. Get in touch with Home Reach, with locations across Darlington, Durham, and the rest of the UK For more information and to browse our properties, head to www.homereach.org.uk. Words from proud parent & primary teacher Following concerns around my child’s confidence and acquisition of basic literacy skills (despite many previous interventions), I approached Kip McGrath initially for a consultation and assessment appointment. I was impressed with the systematic programmes on offer so decided to move forward with weekly sessions. Each session is led by a qualified teacher, with whom I have regular contact to discuss progress and next steps; this is hugely beneficial as it allows me to remain fully involved whilst at home. A very comprehensive homework programme (built on small steps and over-learning) is put in place following each session to consolidate and maximise learning opportunities. As a teacher myself, I felt that I had a range of resources and strategies at my fingertips to help my child; I however found implementing these strategies after a busy school/work day very challenging and often counterproductive! Following the Kip programme provides me with all of the resources that I need ensuring a consistent, progressive system. I know that the approach works as I see it in action; my daughter now presents as a much more confident child who is developing her self-belief that she can do it. To date, she continues to access her weekly Kip sessions with motivation and dedication (unlike previous interventions where motivation has fallen fairly quickly); she recognises the progress that she has made and is proud of these achievements I am absolutely thrilled with her progress and cannot thank the centre staff and her tutor enough.

Even through these unprecedented times, my child has continued to access weekly lessons with Kip through their virtual platform; she has very much enjoyed these sessions and continued to build on her achievements. Kip were very quick in their responses to the pandemic and were mindful of missed learning opportunities; they worked extremely hard to ensure that this did not happen, ensuring consistency for the young people that they support. The centre staff are very professional and supportive in their approach; they are always available for advice and guidance. Lessons can be planned to fit in with busy school/work life and cover a range of subjects. Approaching Kip was quite possibly one of the best opportunities that I have given my daughter as I see her continue to grow, flourish and move closer to reaching her full potential. Proud Parent and Primary School Teacher

FILM REVIEW

remembering to adhere, at least loosely, to the established rules of a pre-existing popular franchise. As a result, it can just allow its eccentricity to run free, with such endearing artistic touches as a storm cloud or heart forming in hand-drawn style near Katie’s head as she flicks from one emotion to another. This animated tale of an off-kilter family, the Mitchells, is rich in the same kind of wit and verve as the Lego Movies – perhaps unsurprisingly, given that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who launched that franchise, are producers of this film. The directorial responsibilities, though, go to Mike Rianda, who has assembled a top-drawer voice-acting cast including Olivia Colman as PAL, an Alexa-like digital assistant gone rogue. When PAL’s original creator, tech entrepreneur Mark Bowman (voiced by Eric André), holds a swanky, Apple-style press event unveiling a new product line of home robots set to replace her, the incensed PAL seizes control of the robots before ordering them to capture all humans and banish them to outer space. Ironically, only the bumbling Mitchells elude the robots’ clutches and have a shot of saving humanity. The 2018 cult classic Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, with which Lord and Miller were also involved, sprinkled quirky 2D effects across a 3D-animated backdrop. The Mitchells vs the Machines sports a similarly hybrid look – one evoking the fun, creative spirit of the Abbi Jacobson-voiced lead Katie Mitchell, a young, aspiring filmmaker struggling to get along with her tech-phobic father Rick (Danny McBride). However, unlike the Lego Movies and Spider-verse, The Mitchells vs the Machines doesn’t have to worry about

Though the pandemic might be the only reason The Mitchells vs the Machines went to streaming rather than cinemas, it’s certainly convenient to be able to pause the exhilarating action from time to time to catch all of the clever visual flourishes and sight gags too easy to miss otherwise. A certain popular ‘90s toy (no, not the Tamagotchi) is even reinvented in brilliantly creepy fashion. This tone of shameless silliness also surfaces in the top-notch dialogue. “It’s almost like stealing people’s data and giving it to a hyper-intelligent AI as part of an unregulated tech monopoly was a bad thing,” Bowman laments in one example of the script’s amusingly knowing references. However, The Mitchells vs the Machines isn’t interested in relentlessly preaching any trite, over-simplistic “stop looking at your phone” message. Instead, it embraces the online world in its beautiful weirdness, as Katie and her father find common ground in their increasingly nuanced views of both that world and the “real” one. The crux of the problem, this turn of events shows us, isn’t really the technology itself but instead how we use it – a heartwarming message that feels especially resonant in our pandemic age.

New, 120-bed Holiday Inn hotel is increasingly assembled in Sunderland Last year, construction work on a new, four-storey hotel began as part of Sunderland’s new Keel Square development. This spring, the building structure started taking shape as its steel frame was put into place, with the hotel currently scheduled to open in spring 2022. The new hotel is costing £18m in total to build – and, once complete, will be run by Holiday Inn. The Cairn Hotel Group, which is overseeing the development, obtained official approval for its plans in 2019 – and claims that the finished complex will incorporate cafes and eateries on the ground floor. Meanwhile, the Sunderland city centre building’s upper storeys will house 120-bed accommodation “attractive” to people visiting Sunderland or the wider North East region for business or leisure. Richard Warren, chief financial officer and marketing director at the Cairn Group, enthused: “It’s fantastic to see the frame in place for this excellent new addition to the city’s hotel offer. “We are really excited by the plans for Riverside Sunderland and can see such potential in this part of the city, so we’re delighted to be developing a venue that can play a part in the success of Sunderland. “The hotel will stand in a prime position, allowing it to attract both leisure and business guests. It’s full steam ahead until opening now.” When that opening arrives, it will create 130 full- and part-time jobs, according to the Group – with Sunderland City Council already set to let two of the four retail spaces beneath the hotel. The building will 52 | IN&AROUND

also be sited close to the 5.5-hectare Vaux site, where the Vaux Brewery once stood. Peter McIntyre, executive director of city development at Sunderland City Council, declared: “The active ground floor frontage will make this hotel a hive of activity, with guests of the hotel and people living and working at Riverside Sunderland and the rest of the city centre able to make use of the eateries that open there. “The hotel will play an important part in connecting the city centre to the Vaux site and we’re thrilled to see it moving forward. “Hotel developments are a real vote of confidence in the city’s visitor economy as well as its ability to attract business travellers – and we’re pleased that Cairn Group can see the increasing sense of vibrancy that is building in Sunderland.” The hotel development is just one part of Riverside Sunderland – a large-scale, city-centre regeneration project aimed at transforming and revitalising the banks of the River Wear. Over £500,000 of investment is being poured into the city centre as Riverside Sunderland sees the construction of a thousand sustainable new homes and the addition of a million square feet of employment space, including modern offices and commercial premises.
