Care Connect supports vulnerable people of all ages, providing a monitoring and response service to people’s homes 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, offering assistance and reassurance whenever it is needed. There is a charge for the service and this will be discussed upon enquiry. If you have a relative, neighbour or friend who is vulnerable or socially isolated, Care Connect could provide a vital service.

The Happy Wanderer pub is under new management! Residents of Framwellgate Moor are excited to see the reopening of a pub that has been closed for over two years. The Happy Wanderer will reopen in February under the name “The Gate”, and the new owners have already made it very clear that families and dogs are welcome. Engaged couple David Hobson and Estelle McKee aim to make the establishment a “top-quality family friendly neighbourhood pub”. This will be the first pub the couple have owned, but both have plenty of experience of the hospitality industry, including roles as general managers for Tomahawk Steak House. The reopening of the premises will create 25 new jobs, as the new licensees hope The Gate will become the social hub of the community. Something will always be going on and everyone is welcome. Plans for activities include showing live sports, hosting regular live music, a weekly quiz and ‘drag bingo’ as well as Fish Fridays, Fizz Fridays and more! A new lease of life On top of their social plans, the bar will be getting a revamp, giving the pub on Beech Road a much more modern look and feel. The exterior will be repainted grey and given new lighting and signage, reflecting the rebrand. A terrace is being fitted at the front of the building, featuring timber and painted furniture, parasols and greenery. 8 | IN&AROUND

To the rear will be the beer garden. With enough seating for 120, a children’s play area, rustic planters and vintage string lights, David and Estelle are certainly living up to their promise of being family friendly. Inside is being opened up to create more space, with an open plan lounge and dining area being created. A new kitchen is being installed with an open pass, allowing customers to see their meal being prepared. Expect an upgrade to the toilets, with a new accessible loo being installed along with an accessible ramp at the entrance of the pub, to guarantee access for disabled customers. What’s on the menu? The pub’s makeover also comes with a new menu. From 10am, the pub will be serving coffee and cakes, followed by sandwiches and light bites at lunch. The evening menu boasts classic pub grub, pies, curry and more, as well as a seafood sharing board and butcher’s board and chicken Parmo. Sunday’s menu will include roasts. Drinks-wise, punters can choose from two cask ales and craft options, an extensive range of gin, cocktails of the week and a vast wine selection, including prosecco. We are very much looking forward to the opening of this exciting addition to Framwellgate Moor!

A GUIDE FOR CASHIERS

Safe guarding yourself from financial scams Ringing the changes a money changing scam This is a term used for a type of fraud which involves the offender asking for a sum of cash to be changed into notes of a different denomination, for example 10 x £20 notes changed to 20 x £10. Once the cashier has counted out the cash and handed it to the offender, the offender will usually count the money again in front of the cashier and use a sleight of hand technique as he/she is doing so, in order to steal some of the money. The offender will then ask the cashier to change the money again, often into an outlandish denomination such as 10p pieces. The cashier will refuse and it is at this point that the offender will then ask for his/her original money back. The cashier assumes that the offender is handing back the full amount and exchanges it for the original money. The offender leaves with the original money, plus whatever they stole during the sleight of hand trick. It is not unusual for the scam to go unnoticed until the tills are cashed at the end of the day. ‘Ringing the changes’ usually happens during busy times which adds to the confusion and places extra pressure on staff.

Some startling facts:

• Nationwide - on average, over £160 is lost during each offence and it takes only seconds.

• In one recent offence in Sacriston £100 was lost. • Only 5% of offences are detected or lead to a prosecution.

• On average Stores and Garage Forecourt in County

Durham have lost between £5 and £100 in less than 2 minutes.

ALL BUSINESSES OWNERS AND EMPLOYEES ARE ASKED TO REMAIN VIGILANT AND REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOUR TO THE POLICE. What to do to prevent becoming a victim The most effective way to prevent such offending is to increase awareness among your staff and follow these simple tips:

• Refuse to exchange notes and adopt a ‘no change’ or ‘one note only’ policy.

• Be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to the Police.

• If you have CCTV, ensure that it is working correctly and is capable of identifying potential suspects

• Display the stickers and posters included with this pack.

• If your store does have to exchange money e.g.

Bureau de Change, ensure that staff count and recount any money handed over by the offender. The scam is reliant on the cashier assuming that they have been given back the original amount.

Don’t forget

Staff are under no obligation to change denominations of cash for customers. Legitimate customers wanting change for a valid reason will often make a small purchase in order to get change.

Notable Birthday: J.R.R Tolkien When thinking about the fantasy genre, is there a trilogy that springs to mind faster than The Lord of the Rings? This month, we are celebrating the birthday of the renowned fantasy writer J.R.R. Tolkien, best known for penning ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy.

sequel to The Hobbit - The Lord of the Rings. Many regard TLOTR as Tolkien’s greatest work and his legacy. The series was released in three parts across 1954 and 1955 to predominantly positive reviews. To this day, fans dedicate time to forming fan clubs and learning his fictional languages.

On the 3rd of January 1892, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Though he did not spend much time there, one of Tolkien’s vivid memories of his time in South Africa included a slightly scary encounter with a large hairy spider, which some say influenced a character in The Lord of the Rings series.

Following his retirement from professorial duties in 1959. Tolkien went on to publish an essay and poetry collection, Tree and Leaf, as well as the fantasy tale Smith of Wootton Major.

Upon returning to England in 1896, Tolkien settled with his mother and younger brother, Hilary, in Sarehole, Birmingham. After being raised by a relative following the death of his mother, Tolkien achieved a First Class degree at Exeter College, specialising in Anglo-Saxon and Germanic languages and classic literature. After a four month stint fighting in WW1, Tolkien continued his linguistic studies, joining the faculty at the University of Leeds and later becoming a professor at Oxford University. It was during his time at Oxford that he started a writing group called The Inklings. The group consisted of authors such as C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia) and Owen Barfield. It wasn’t until 1937, with the publication of The Hobbit that Tolkien would become a household name. The book has since been recognised as the “Most Important 20th-Century Novel (for Older Readers) “, though it wasn’t originally intended for children. While working on scholarly publications, Tolkien was also developing the

Tolkien died on the 2nd of September 1973, at the age of 81. He is buried with his wife, Edith, in the Catholic section of Wolvercote cemetery, Oxford.

£1 million to revamp central area in Consett More information has been made available to residents of Consett, about planned improvements to Middle Street. More than £1 million worth of work is due to start early in 2022, following successful projects in Victoria Road, Wesley Street and Front Street. This comes as part of the council’s ambitious Town and Villages Regeneration Strategy. The scheme aims to enhance the vibrancy of communities across the county, as well as support them in their recovery from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns. What do plans include? Middle Street will soon be home to a new outdoor events space, so the community can host festivals, street art performances and markets. Additional lighting is being installed to support this, with snowflakes included to be used at Christmas time. As part of their ongoing commitment to tackling climate change, the council has decided that all

existing streetlamps will be replaced with energy efficient LED lighting. A solar bench has also been commissioned using recycled plastic. This will feature solar powered phone chargers and visitors to the town will be able to access free Wi-Fi very soon! Enhancing Consett’s Reputation The upcoming plans are integral to establishing and enhancing Consett’s reputation as a local shopping destination. Consett’s existing retailers will be given the chance to thrive and more jobs will be created in the process. Plans to improve Middle Street are very much in line with the Towns and Villages Strategy and also stands to address ongoing issues relating to climate change. children and adults and an employment support service. “In recent years we’ve been able to expand the fantastic services we offer to autistic individuals and their families across the region,” says NEAS Chief Executive John Phillipson. “This will continue into 2022 as we open Kiora Hall School in Stockton – and we have some very exciting plans in the pipeline for our adult services. “However the incredible work we do simply wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated staff, and we’re always on the lookout for hardworking people to join Team NEAS.” Kiora Hall School is preparing to welcome its first cohort of pupils, breathing new life into the historic building which has had a multitude of uses over the years. Formerly used as an Army gun battery, youth club, school and even a prisoner of war camp, Kiora Hall School will deliver specialist education to up to 30 students, and will create a number of job opportunities for teaching assistants, teachers and administration staff.

Haggis, clapshot and whisky sauce Celebrate the New Year with The Hairy Bikers' recipe of haggis, neeps, tatties and whisky sauce.

Directions Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

Wrap the haggis tightly in aluminium foil and place onto a baking tray. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes to one hour, or until cooked through.

For the whisky sauce, heat the double cream in a pan over a medium heat. Add the wholegrain mustard, Dijon mustard and whisky and stir to combine. Increase the heat until the mixture is simmering and continue to cook for 1-2 minutes.

Meanwhile, for the clapshot, boil the potatoes and swede in separate saucepans of salted water for 15-18 minutes, or until tender. Drain well. Add the drained swede to the drained potatoes and mash thoroughly. Add the butter and cream and mash again until smooth and well combined. Season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground white pepper. Remove the pan from the heat and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground white pepper. Stir in the tablespoon of chives, then whisk in the lemon juice.

To serve, divide the clapshot equally among four serving plates. Place a spoonful of steamed haggis alongside each. Spoon over the warm whisky sauce.

£1.5m development plan approved for North East haulage company Elddis Transport, a Consett based distribution company, is set to expand after £1.5m worth of plans was given the green light. The North East business has secured approval to transform the former site of GT Engineering in Delves Lane, into a new storage and distribution space. This comes as part of plans to increase onsite capacity for warehouse operations. What do plans entail? Work on the site will include the installation of a new roof, access doors and improved car parking facilities, as well as refurbished office accommodation, including brand new training and meeting rooms. Improvements to the site will also see new vehicle and pedestrian access, landscaping, lighting and security measures and fencing installed, to boost hauling operations. All of this comes as part of a long term strategy by Elddis Transport to improve its current facilities. 48 | IN&AROUND

Looking to the future Elddis recently sold their site on Old Pit Lane, near the Arnison Centre, to Pemcor Estates in order to secure planning approval. The funds from this sale are being reinvested in the Delves Lane site, as well as projects in Newton Aycliffe, aiming to support the future growth and success of the firm and its 320-strong workforce. Approval comes as Elddis marks 50 years in business and, according to their commercial director, Richard Toner, is part of future growth plans: “Planning approval provides the platform to move on to the next level and underline our commitment to investing in the business, creating additional quality vehicle space and facilities for longer term growth and success”.

When Mirabel realises that the enchantment around the Encanto is suddenly in jeopardy, she is destined to become the family's final saviour in restoring the magic. Mirabel's narrative is visually stunning from the get go, as is the entire scenery of the film throughout, which has been evident in just about every other Disney animation lately. The environment is lively, rich in vibrancy and offers a great amount of unique detail. The animator's have provided excellent detail through infusing elements of greys into the landscape as the tale progresses from flamboyant and joyous at the beginning, to a darker turn as the Encanto gradually becomes at risk. Taking inspiration from Columbian cultures and beliefs, Encanto is another of Disney’s original narrative films which undoubtedly assures us that the beloved animation studio hasn’t lost its magic in creating its own original stories - it seems that Encanto is the film that has kept Disney's magic flowing.

Encanto successfully explores the traditions, culture, themes and family life of Columbia, as looking at Colombia through the prism of magical realism by focusing on the Madrigal family's magical skills. The moral of the story, as with most other films visualised by Disney, is meaningful and allows us to develop a sense of family and acceptance - it’s a well thought narrative that explores new themes and ideas. That said, the concern with Encanto is not with its visualization or initial story; its main issue is with its script. No - the songs aren’t unnecessary - and the concept isn’t awful. However, the scripting is slightly all over the place, with a lot happening in quick succession for a film that isn’t too lengthy. Instead of working through storyline issues, the producers have simply rushed through each twist in the tale, leaving the viewer to decipher each situation for themselves. The story is fantastic, but there are numerous points in the film that are given no explanation, given that key elements in the story aren’t important. At times it seems as if the filmmakers may just be passing the time until the next musical piece begins, and so each song acts as a destruction from what the audience has just witnessed. Overall, aside from the few rushed scenarios within the narrative which may have caused minor confusion among some viewers, Encanto is a captivating and intriguing film that is certainly one of Disney’s best original animation features to surface at the box office in recent years. A feel good story about family reunification and tolerating your relatives for who they are instead of who you want them to be makes for a thrilling movie with a great message.

ork is a city in which there is never any shortage of things to do. The Christmas markets might have closed up shop for the year, but the Shambles market is there all year round.
