Welcome to the November issue of IN&AROUND!

Local News
We’re unquestionably in strange times – the coronavirus crisis is back with us, we couldn’t celebrate Halloween in quite the way we’d have hoped, and... well, Disney’s cult classic Hocus Pocus has returned to cinemas, shedding its previous box-office “flop” tag.

What’s on
38
On page 36, our new Social Media Marketing Executive, Katie Hind, explains how Disney’s dark fantasy comedy horror film has retained its magic over all of these years. But we’ve also got much more in the latest edition of your favourite free community magazine to keep you entertained through those dark and cold November nights.
Why Advertise?
That includes our usual helping of local news and competitions, as well as our regular contributor Alex Nelson’s ‘Places to go...’ column on page 30 – this time focused on the Northumberland village of Haydon Bridge. Last but not least, if you do get the chance to get out and about a bit this month amid COVID-19 restrictions, don’t forget to consult our ‘What’s on’ highlights on page 38. Bye for now – stay safe, and we’ll see you again in December!

Lambton Estate to receive a new retail complex and further office space The stately home of Lambton Castle has stood on the Chester-le-Street skyline since being constructed in the early nineteenth century by the first Earl of Durham. Today, the Grade II* listed castle is a key feature of the Lambton Estate currently undergoing a £15m redevelopment.
Lambton Estate has already seen an encouraging level of interest in the new buildings, and has brought forward its detailed viability work on them accordingly. A planning application for the new additions will be submitted before Christmas, with the construction work beginning next year.
While the housing developer Miller Homes has long been busy with creating a set of 109 new homes at Lambton Park, the estate is now also earmarked for a new retail complex and extra office space. All of this redevelopment work is intended to help fund restoration of the historic site.
Andrew Somerville, sales director at Miller Homes North East, says: “We are really looking forward to seeing the Estate’s vision for Bowes Gate brought to life.”
The site has already recently benefited from miles of seasonal access footpaths being opened up for public use. Meanwhile, Miller Homes has just added the finishing touches to the eastern side of Bowes Gate Drive, a new entrance into the estate. However, the project is now moving into its next phase, whereby a community hub will be assembled close to the homes. The Bowes Gates complex, as this hub will be known, is set to offer ground-floor retail space for eight independent local shops like a bakery, butcher and grocer. That will be in the complex’s main building, but the development is also intended to house a standalone cafe/bistro. Space for further businesses will be available across the main building’s first and second floors, where anything from conventional offices to a wellness centre could be set up.
8 | IN&AROUND
Meanwhile, Calum Gillhespy, a director of Lambton Estate’s managing agents CSC Grays, revealed: “We have been hugely encouraged by the speculative interest which potential operators have expressed in the building. In response, we have pressed on with this critical component of our plans for Lambton Park.
“We have an exciting design for Bowes Gate which complements the fantastic job Miller Homes is doing on-site, and we hope to be inviting formal expressions of interest in the space which we have available next month.” In the summer, Lambton Estate permanently threw open its doors to the public for the first time in 40 years. Since 1980, the public’s only opportunity to access the grounds came with the annual Lambton Run held to raise money for Sunderland AFC’s official charity the Foundation of Light.

If you concerned your cat may be suffering from FIC it is essential to get a urine sample – nonabsorbent litter can be purchased from your vet.
in association with Feline Idiopathic Cystitis [FIC] is the most common cause of lower urinary tract disease in cats. It is most common in middle-aged, overweight, male, neutered cats. It is also more common in multi-cat house holds, indoor cats and those cats fed a dry diet. It can be triggered by a stressful event like an owner’s holiday, excess visitors, building works or a new cat in the neighbourhood. Signs of FIC include: • increased need to go to the toilet • blood in the urine • urinating in unusual places • pain when urinating • over-grooming • increased thirst (common sign of many diseases) • straining but not passing urine*
Management of FIC is complex but will likely include: • changing to a wet cat food • encouraging drinking – flavouring water or using cat fountains • ensuring sufficient clean litter trays are provided (one per cat plus one) • reducing stress – providing hiding places, increasing play, calming remedies • losing weight if appropriate • pain killers and anti-inflammatories • bladder supplements Most cats respond well to treatment for FIC although the signs may return if another stressful incident happens. Many cats grow out of it with age.
*Note – this is an emergency situation and veterinary attention should be sought without delay For furthur advice or queries give us a call on 0191 410 9674

This book was written by 90 year old Tom, a well known Durham County Cricket Club cricketer and businessman. When Nancy passed in February, Tom typed this book, 300 pages, while in lockdown. It is receiving remarkable comments for it is part autobiographical, but has twenty one individual anecdotes, each a separate story of the remarkable and varied life of this dynamic man. Tom, since 2000 has been Chairman of the 1878, old Pelton Fell Colliery Brass Band. In 2000 he helped save them when they lost both Sponsor and Band-room. Today, playing as the wonderful “NASUWT Chester-leStreet Riverside Band, they are ranked 22nd in world brass band rankings.

This incredible autobiography was written since February when Tom’s wife Nancy died. It tells the remarkable story of a boy, born in 1930, into a one-bed-roomed tiny miners cottage. His Dad was a coal hewer at Wearmouth Colliery, where there were already three sisters 8, 10 and 13. One very interesting story is that that 8 year older sister became Mrs Hays the very lady who founded “HAYS TRAVEL” and also “HAYS CREDIT” – both stories in this amazing book. This is really two books – the first covering Tom’s dynamic and diverse career stories, the second twenty one Anecdotes, each an intriguing stand alone story with unbelievable famous names you will at once recognise. It is the story of that young boy, learning to play cricket in the back-street, never dreaming he would one day play 40 years in his beloved Durham Senior League, or play many games for Durham County Colts in the 1940’s, then later many games for DCCC in the Minor Counties 20 | IN&AROUND

Championship. Perhaps the wildest dream would be to believe that he would become recognised as the researcher who brought First Class Cricket to DCCC. Then become Committeeman, Treasurer, Director (for 15 years) then President 2006-2008. These are the wildest dreams you only get in fairy stories – BUT, they all happened. An Amazing follow-up; Since the Book came out – Tom has actually written another book. “A modern day History of A Modern Day Cricket Crucifixion”. This of course covers the ECB’s massive, and cruel Sanctions imposed on DCCC by ECB for the crime of being in Debt. Tom intends to send a proof copy of his book to the ECB to allow then to correct anything, and also DCCC. Full replies will then appear in the final edition – due out before Christmas. What a present.

Places to go...
we met Diana and her son James in the shop packed full with all types of clocks and watches, and CDs, books and children’s toys
Haydon Bridge I
took a visit with my step-daughter Melissa to Haydon Bridge in August 2020 when traffic was slowly building on the railway and the government’s “Eat Out to Help Out” promotion suggested I was doing my civic duty by having lunch at Langley Castle under two miles out of town. In so doing, we walked part of the John Martin trail, devised in 2004, past his birthplace at East Land Ends on the south side of the river. John Martin (1789-1854) was the most famous artist of his day, noted for his apocalyptic pictures of biblical scenes, but he was also a polymath who proposed and made drawings of new railways for London and plans for new sewerage systems. Some of his canvases are on display at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle, in the free entry area, and at the time they were first displayed were regarded as sensational. A large piece “The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah” is one of the treasures of the Laing. John was one of 13 children, only five of which survived into adulthood. His brother Jonathan (surely some room for confusion there!) was most renowned for attempting to burn down York Minster in 1829 and committed to an institution for the rest of his life. John was born in a one-roomed cottage, and, as he later said “By birth, my station could scarcely have been humbler”, but he moved to London in 1806 where he found fame and fortune. Haydon Bridge only has about 2,000 inhabitants but has a roughly hourly rail service on the Newcastle to Carlisle line opened in 1838. There is a level crossing at the top of Church Street, which runs south to the River Tyne, and here the traffic on the A69 used to roar through the village until it was finally bypassed to the south in 2009. 30 | IN&AROUND
On the corner of Ratcliffe Road and Church Street is a watch and clock repair business run by Diana Bell, which also trades as Mr. George’s Museum of Time. Previously located in Haltwhistle, this business has moved to Haydon Bridge, and we met Diana and her son James in the shop packed full with all types of clocks and watches, and CDs, books and children’s toys featuring Diana’s late father George. If you have a clock needing repair, you could take it to Diana and pick it up on another occasion. Unfortunately, owing to the pandemic, the children’s activities have had to be suspended, but the displays are most interesting, and although we were not there at twelve o’clock when all the chiming is at its maximum. I imagine the cacophony would be splendid. There are two hotels and four pubs in the village, but we struck out for Langley Castle, which is of great antiquity, and which was rebuilt between 1882 and 1914, a square building with four turrets. The restorer was Cadwallader John Bates, a local historian, who died before the work was finished, and the work was completed by his wife Josephine. After a spell as St. Cuthbert’s School for Girls, the building was converted to an impressive hotel and wedding venue in 1985. Haydon Bridge is special for me, as a result of a family holiday from Kent at Plunder Heath above the town in 1979. Melissa was interested to learn it was from there I went by train to see the progress on the Tyne and Wear Metro, and a trip to Durham where I had a tour of the Castle and decided to apply to University College. Thank you, Haydon Bridge. alexnelson@dunelm.org.uk

Are you getting enough vitamin D? Vitamin D keeps your bones, teeth, and muscles healthy. Consider taking 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day during the colder months or if you spend a lot of time indoors, as you may not be getting enough vitamin D from sunlight to provide you with enough vitamin D naturally. There have been some news reports about vitamin D reducing the risk of coronavirus, however, there is currently not enough evidence to support this.
Pop in store and ask our pharmacist about our vitamin D supplements. Do not buy more vitamin D than you need! Visit our website to find out more at

New jobs and homes on the horizon after County Durham development plan is approved Thousands of jobs and new homes are expected to fuel the County Durham economy’s recovery from the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic after the County Durham Plan, an ambitious development scheme prepared by Durham County Council, recently met an inspector’s approval. The County Durham Plan calls for more than 300 hectares of land to be set aside for commercial and industrial development and nearly 25,000 homes to be assembled in the county over the next 15 years. These proposals, following an inspector’s report, are now closer to being followed up on. Government planning inspector William Fieldhouse has, after examining the document and consultation, published his final report on the proposals. The inspector deems the plan sound, provided it receives numerous modifications which have recently been subjected to consultation. Once modified, the plan will be pushed to the council’s Cabinet and, ultimately, the full council – paving the way for the County Durham Plan to be taken up in the approaching months. Councillor Carl Marshall, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for economic regeneration, enthused: “We are really pleased that the inspector has said in his final report that he considers the County Durham Plan provides an appropriate basis for the planning of the county, subject to modifications.
32 | IN&AROUND
“The plan would deliver employment sites with the potential to create over 32,000 jobs, as well as in the region of 25,000 homes – all of which would boost our economy and help it get back on track amid the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. “This is recognised by the inspector, who similarly agrees that, by guiding future development, the plan can also help provide certainty to businesses and communities in the years ahead.” The plan’s provisions include 24,852 new homes, of which between 10% and 25% will be affordable. Most of the new homes will also be designed to accommodate older people. The plan is expected to help generate thousands of new jobs, including in Durham, Seaham and Newton Aycliffe. The plan also investigates how the historic and natural environment will be protected and how infrastructure can support the development of projects including new or expanded schools, community facilities and healthcare provision. The modifications on which local residents were recently consulted include removing proposals for two relief roads on Durham’s outskirts and a third at Barnard Castle. Over 500 comments arrived from over a hundred consulted people, and the inspector considered all of these responses before publishing his report, in which he predicts: “The relative certainty that will be provided by finalising the plan will be beneficial in terms of encouraging sustainable development and helping the county to recover.”

FILM REVIEW:
hocus pocus Hocus Pocus centres around two new kids in town, Max (Ormi Katz) and Dani (Thora Birch), upended from their laidback LA lifestyle to settle in Salem, Massachusetts. Max, stumbling through the pangs of adolescence and smitten with the town’s leading teen queen Allison (Vinessa Shaw), discovers that all of Salem’s spooky tales are actually, undeniably true.
sisters! In fact, all of the witches hold their own against her majesty, being hilariously overdramatic and hair-raising in equal measure. People give this film too much flack for not being seriously scary; however, these witches aren’t meant to be unequivocally terrifying, but instead a parody of things that go bump in the night.
After unwittingly conjuring up a trio of diabolical witches executed in the 17th century but whose appetite for young children now threatens the whole town, Max must fend off resident bullies and witches alike to save both his sister and all the other kids in Salem. It’s sure to be a Halloween he’ll never forget!
Ultimately, this film demonstrates how to weave, amongst a bundle of fun, a beautiful allegory: take care of your loved ones and appreciate what’s right in front of you. It’s an undoubtedly family-friendly message (despite the occasional zombie!).
This movie has never failed to put a spell on me. From the excellent casting of Bette Midler to the brilliant comedic timing, Hocus Pocus never misses the mark of family-friendly, eerie entertainment. Each character, scene, costume and joke serves to make a film worth watching – over and over again! Bette Midler’s performance as Winifred has gone down in history just as much as the Sanderson
There’s a reason this film has become a cult classic – there’s a lasting spooky appeal that results from a helluva good score and committed, consistent acting. Hocus Pocus is not perfect; sometimes, the dialogue is drawn out, while the movie stumbles through its pacing. Still, I found my attention never faltered, with the spectacle of magic and mystery keeping me on the edge of my seat. This movie’s not just a bunch of hocus pocus!

Catch Up & Keep Up Most children recently returned to the classroom after 6 months out of education. This has been a challenging time for most families. Children may have forgotten skills or lost confidence in their own ability. The transition may be particularly difficult for students who were already not meeting age related expectations. Many parents are searching for a way to ignite their child’s love of learning or re-engage them with classroom education. Children may struggle in large classroom environments for a variety of reasons. Some may process information more slowly than their peers, whilst others need to be stretched and challenged due to working ahead. Those with additional needs such as ASD, ADHD, anxiety, dyslexia or dyscalculia need to be taught in a way which suits their learning style, to allow them to reach their potential. We believe every child can learn, but some need a different approach to help them succeed. Our students thrive in a small group setting, working alongside peers, but with individual teaching by a fully qualified and highly experienced teacher. Each child works on a personalised learning
programme, based on their specific needs. Our tutors deliver fun, engaging lessons with a multi-sensory approach utilising worksheets, computer and book work. Students progress at their own pace; our system allows tutors to assess, track and record progress every lesson. No student gets left behind in a Kip lesson. The Kip McGrath Gateshead East & Chester le Street team have a proven record of working with several departments within Gateshead Council as their preferred provider of tuition, many primary and secondary schools and hundreds of local families.

Charles Schulz, 26th November 1922 If Charles Monroe “Sparky” Schulz doesn’t ring any bells, what if we mentioned Charlie Brown and Snoopy? Yes, Charles M. Schulz, the beloved American cartoonist, would have been celebrating his 98th birthday on 26th November. Born in 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he was the only child of Carl Schulz, who was born in Germany, and Dena Halverson, who had Norwegian heritage. Fun fact, his uncle called him “Sparky” after the horse Spark Plug in Billy DeBeck’s comic strip, Barney Google, which Schulz loved reading. Talk about a sign of things to come... Possibly the most influential cartoonist of all time Schulz is widely regarded as one of the most influential cartoonists of all time, cited by the likes of Jim Davis and Bill Watterson, and he fast became a household name after the release of Peanuts. Peanuts made its first appearance in seven newspapers in 1950. After a slow start, it eventually became one of the most popular comic strips of all time. 70 years later, Peanuts and the characters within continue to

make a positive impact across the world. It would be hard to find someone unfamiliar with Charlie Brown and the gang. Retirement and death Sadly, in November 1999, Schulz suffered several small strokes and a blocked aorta, and he was later found to have colon cancer. Because of his chemotherapy and the fact he could not see clearly, he announced his retirement on 14th December, 1999. Several months later, Schulz died of the cancer at his home on 12th February, 2000, at the age of 77. The last original Peanuts strip was published the next day. This month, on 26th November, why not celebrate the life of Charles Schulz by rereading one of his famous comic strips? Work from Schulz can be found online, with various hardbacks available for purchase on Amazon or eBay.

Plans for heritage hub telling County Durham’s history given goahead As evidenced by such stunning attractions as Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle, County Durham is one part of the North East especially steeped in history. Almost 900 years of it is set to be told at a history centre that will occupy the Grade II-listed Mount Oswald Manor House in the county’s heart.
Durham County Record Office. As part of the project, Durham Register Office will also be relocated from its present setting in Aykley Heads. The Office will offer enhanced facilities for weddings and civil ceremonies, allowing these to take advantage of the manor house’s historic character and surroundings.
Durham County Council has won approval for plans that will see the nineteenth-century manor house restored in its Neo-Georgian glory and used to provide a wide range of archive, heritage and registration services near the cathedral city after which the county is named.
Councillor Joy Allen, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for transformation, culture and tourism, says the granting of planning permission for the Durham History Centre project “allows us to bring a historic building back into use as a dynamic heritage hub where our history will be celebrated and preserved for generations to come.”
With the project having now been granted planning permission and received an overwhelmingly positive reaction, the Durhambased Banks Group, which currently owns the manor house, is preparing to transfer the site to council ownership for a nominal fee. It is hoped that the on-site restoration and development work can commence next year before the transformed property opens its doors to the public in 2023. Durham History Centre will securely store over five miles of county archives currently kept in County Hall. Historic registration records, environmental and archaeological records and local studies collections will all also be kept under the History Centre’s roof. Also placed in the History Centre’s care will be all of the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) collection’s items, currently kept at Sevenhills in Spennymoor, and the DLI archives presently looked after by

Acknowledging the Centre’s intended exhibition programme focusing on the stories of working people and everyday families, she added: “The history centre will provide a place where people of all ages can discover more about those who came before them.” A public consultation on the Durham History Centre project in 2018 garnered over 600 responses, 83% of which supported the proposal. However, Cllr Allen has added: “As we move forward, I would encourage residents to continue to take part in the engagement activities.” She insisted that the heritage hub, which will include innovative digital facilities, exhibition and interpretation spaces and a dedicated learning space, “will belong to the people of County Durham, so please make sure you have your say about the kind of exhibitions and activities it offers.”
