PUB REVIEW
Lambton Arms Hotel, Chester-Le-Street
W
hen it was suggested that I take charge of writing a review of a local bar, pub or nightspot for this issue of IN&AROUND, and that it was probably best that I chose somewhere in close proximity to the JAK Inc offices where I now work, the initial search for suitable candidates had to be done very much on ‘street level’. That’s because I remain very much a newcomer to the charms of Chester-le-Street, so am still becoming accustomed to this unassuming, but interesting town. Given Chester-le-Street’s status as one of County Durham’s oldest market towns, it is perhaps befitting that the choice of establishment for my first review in this slot resembles, to almost the last inch, a traditional English pub, both inside and out. The Lambton Arms Hotel is a mere few minutes’ walk away from the home of JAK Inc - and by extension, the railway station - on Front Street, and as I’m visiting at Sunday lunchtime, the atmosphere is pleasantly low-key. However, nor is the pub exactly desolate, with a decent mix of ages in evidence among the clientele. It’s very much the feel that you would want from your Sunday pub visit - a nice, chattery atmosphere, but also not crowded to any intimidating degree. With a few kids also in attendance, I get the sense of having walked into a perfectly pleasant family and community-oriented pub, right down to the reassuringly traditional English pub decor. As I find
6 | IN&AROUND
a table to sit down and contemplate the pub’s menu on my phone, there is a big screen showing Sky Sports, as well as an ATM (or cash machine, to the rest of you) to my left.
So, what more is there to do from this point than place my order? It’s a typical Sunday pub lunch that I swiftly receive to accompany my Guinness, including beef that I wouldn’t have chosen in hindsight - my personal reference, nothing to do with the quality provided - along with the usual mashed potato, gravy and some nice, juicy Yorkshire puddings. Including the pint and a bit of salad, the full meal cost less than a tenner, and what I got for that outlay was a pretty satisfactory Sunday dinner. The potato was much as I remembered it from proper ‘Sunday dinners’ with Mum back home, while the gravy was also familiarly moreish. All in all, it was a fulfilling meal that made me contemplate making the effort to pop back on a day when the usual, much more comprehensive food menu applies. The Lambton Arms Hotel is certainly an inviting watering hole from the outside,
as I can confirm on the basis of having walked past it various times during the working week and seen plenty of people enjoying the sun at the outside tables. A quick look at the Lambton Arms Hotel’s website at www.wearinns.co.uk confirms that various weekly events are held at the pub, including a salsa night every Tuesday evening and a DJ each Saturday night, in addition to live bands on Fridays. Indeed, every second Saturday of the month from 7pm until midnight, four to six DJs are present to spin a selection of ‘60s soul on pure original vinyl, which we are sure will be of interest to many IN&AROUND readers - not least given the free entry, too! Feel free to let us know here at IN&AROUND what you make of what I found to be a pleasantly unpretentious traditional English pub in the form of the Lambton Arms Hotel, or - of course - suggest future establishments that I could investigate for a little meal and hydration.

or several years we had a booking clerk at Chester-le-Street by the name of David Poole and I took him once to his ancestral town for an event at Bournemouth University, which despite the name is mostly located in adjoining Poole. As I recall, we returned by car through the night – not as good as the railway. By train from the north east, it is possible to go direct via Birmingham to Southampton Central or Bournemouth, and take another train into Poole. Alternatively, it is often faster and cheaper to travel via London, into King’s Cross and out of Waterloo with South West Trains into Poole. I travelled again to Poole in September and travelled via London, arriving in Poole mid-afternoon with a First Class Advance ticket from Clapham Junction (with Annual Gold Card discount) following a visit

to Southern Railway which has been hit by troubles recently. Poole station only has two platforms and not much cover and has been subject to development plans for years, but it is central and has a level crossing nearby which bisects the High Street which is quite unusual. I can only think of one other town, Paignton in Devon, which has a similar arrangement. Poole is the headquarters of the RNLI, the Lifeboats charity, and they have a well-equipped training facility with a 60 room hotel attached. This is for training lifeboat crews throughout the country, but, if not all rooms are required, the general public can book in to the Training College and enjoy what is now the #1 hotel in Poole on TripAdvisor. The bedrooms all have a view of the harbour and a proper

RNLI has taken to building them itself.
The photograph shows some of the RNLI training dinghies and on the right is the new Shannon Class lifeboat constructed in Poole for Amble in Northumberland. It is being prepared for its voyage to its new home, and is due to arrive in Amble on October 12th. Nowadays the RNLI builds its own lifeboats since the few boatbuilders that survive are mostly building pleasure craft. A modern lifeboat is more akin to a warship than a pleasure craft and finding no suitable boatbuilders for its modern designs, the
Poole also boasts one of the most expensive housing areas in the UK. Sandbanks was developed from holiday bungalows which were demolished and replaced with mansions for millionaires. There are many pubs and restaurants in the Old Town area, mostly with a nautical theme. Certainly one of the more interesting towns on the south coast.
Poole is a busy port town with ships sailing to France and to the Channel Islands, as well as pleasure boats sailing to local islands, one of which is Brownsea Island. Lieutenant-General Robert Baden-Powell, a war hero from the Boer War, wanted to test his ideas for the book Scouting for Boys. Boys from different social backgrounds participated from 1 to 8 August 1907 in activities around camping, observation, woodcraft, chivalry, lifesaving and patriotism. Recognised as the world’s first Scout camp, the event is regarded as the real origin of the worldwide Scout movement. As a result, the local scout troops are the oldest established in the country.

Try colouring the cookie dough with black or red food colouring; it may not be pretty but it will be scary.
Scary Halloween Cookies Ingredients
250g/9oz unsalted butter, softened 250g/9oz golden caster sugar 2 free-range eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 500g/1lb 2oz plain flour
1 tsp baking powder Halloween-themed cookie cutters Red, white and black writing icing 200g/7oz ready-to-roll fondant icing 1 tbsp apricot jam, warmed with 1 tsp water
1. Beat the sugar and butter together in a large bowl, preferably with an electric mixer, until the mixture becomes light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract, also adding a spoonful of the flour if the mixture looks slightly curdled. If you're using food colouring, add a couple of drops to the mixture. 2. Take a separate bowl and sift together the flour and baking powder in it. Stir the flour into the butter mixture, using floured hands to work into a dough. Turn onto a floured work surface, before kneading into a ball - you can expect the dough to be very wet at this point. Divide the dough into two portions, which can then be wrapped in cling film and left to chill in the fridge for a minimum of one hour.
3. Preheat the oven to 170C/325F/ Gas 3, while lining two baking trays with greaseproof paper.
4. Prepare a lightly floured work surface and roll the dough out onto it, to a thickness of 0.5cm or 1/4in. It's a good idea to roll out one dough portion at a time, leaving 10 | IN&AROUND
the remainder in the fridge. Use the Halloween cutters to cut shapes out. Why not add some gore by removing some of the gingerbread man's limbs.
5. The cookies can then be placed onto the baking tray, with a gap left between them in case they slightly spread. They can then be baked for between 12 and 15 minutes, left on the tray for 10 minutes and moved to a wire rack to finish cooling.
6. Once the cookies are cool, you have the chance to unleash your imagination. You can depict blood along the edges of the gingerbread man's missing limbs with the red writing icing. When it comes to the mummies and skeletons, prepare a work surface dusted with icing sugar and roll the fondant icing out onto it, to a thickness of 0.5cm or 1/4in. Shapes can then be cut out with the same cutters as the cookies. After this, brush the cookies with the warmed apricot jam and apply the icing to the cookies. The white and black writing icing can then be used to decorate.
Maggoty Apples Ingredients 6 apples Juice 1/2 lemon 100g white chocolate 50g puffed rice Jelly worm sweets (optional) 1. Core the apples, beginning at the base and trying to preserve the stalk ends. If required, scoop out any remaining bits of seeds and core using a blunt table knife or melon baller. A metal skewer can also be used for making one or two holes in the sides. Use lemon juice to brush the cut parts of the apples, before putting them on a plate or board. 2. Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water for melting. Once the chocolate has melted, stir in the puffed rice, before removing from the heat. Pack the chocolate and puffed rice mixture into the apples with a teaspoon, sticking some of it into the smaller holes and on the top to give the impression of maggots crawling out. The apples can then be transferred to the fridge for about 20 minutes to set. 3. Spoon any leftover mixture into a mini muffin tin lined with paper petit four cases, putting it in the fridge to set along with the apples. 4. When the chocolate has set, peel the paper cases away, followed by placing the ‘maggot balls’ around the apples. For an even scarier final touch, add some juicy jelly worm sweets.

Plan for Probate I have been in financial services for 33 years, with Marilyn working with me for 15 of those. During that time, we have seen it all, including people dying without Wills and families frantically searching for paperwork to try to find out what the deceased’s wishes were. Did they want to be buried, cremated or even leave their body to medical science? Leave it too late to create a Lasting Power of Attorney and your family could be in for a distressing and expensive time, possibly with strangers overseeing the administration of your loved one’s financial affairs. Seek professional advice to draw up Wills and have Lasting Powers of Attorney created for each of you so that if a loved one loses capacity and cannot deal with their own financial affairs, strangers are not appointed by the Office of the Public Guardian or the Court of Protection. The cost of putting your financial affairs in order will in most cases save hundreds of pounds in the future, while buying you peace of mind. If you love your family, do them a favour
and tidy up your financial paperwork, leaving a file with all relevant documents including Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, insurance policies, funeral plans and a list of contacts to be called soon after death. If you feel that this is too difficult to tackle yourselves, call Peter and Marilyn and we will meet you for a chat. If there is anything we can help with, we will inform you of the fee involved and if necessary, introduce you to our professional legal connections. Meetings to explore your requirements will be held in your home or a neutral venue whichever makes you feel more comfortable. BREXIT HEALTH CHECK: HOW IS THE UK’S EU EXIT PLAN SHAPING UP? Brexit health check: How is the UK’s EU exit plan shaping up? After a long summer recess for Theresa May and co, Parliamentarians returned to the House of Commons in September to recommence their usual running of the country – as well as to begin the process in earnest of negotiating a deal that will eventually see Britain leave the European Union. Now that the initial excitement over Liam Fox, David Davis and Boris Johnson joining the cabinet is over, all eyes are on the Conservative Party to devise a ‘Brexit’ strategy to prepare the country for triggering Article 50. But how is the UK’s plan currently shaping up, and what do we know now that we didn’t in June? Theresa May wants to take her time Theresa May has ruled out the idea of rushing the Brexit process, despite some observers calling for a swift EU departure. Despite a degree of public backlash, the PM has confirmed that Article 50 won’t be triggered until at least the start of 2017 – but anything could change within the next few months as politicians and businesses react to unfolding events. Parliament wants to stay in the single market Over the last few months, there has been clear pressure on the Prime Minister to keep the United Kingdom within the single market. Questions have been raised over the potential costs of remaining in the single market, with some observers suggesting that the UK could only do so if it continues to follow the legislation and free movement policies to which EU member states are subject. This effectively means that, if such rules were enforced, we would continue to follow the same legislative and financial model that we currently do as a member of the European Union, ruling out the potential cost savings and closure of our borders that some pro-Brexit campaigners promised. Immigration and free movement continue to take centre-stage It was one of the most contentious Brexit-related proposals, but Theresa May has already ruled out the possibility of an Australian-style points-based system. 14 | IN&AROUND
However, a ‘preferential deal’ for EU citizens as part of Britain’s future migration policy could still be on the cards. A second referendum has been ruled out Despite more than four million people adding their signature to a campaign for a second referendum, the likelihood of such an event remains low. As far as our Prime Minister is concerned, “Brexit means Brexit”, and the process of negotiation must now begin. David Davis, who serves as our Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, has promised to keep parliamentarians “regularly informed, updated and engaged” throughout Brexit negotiations. There is as much concern as ever Although the initial shockwaves of Brexit are beginning to fade, there is as much concern as ever about the economy. Despite the FTSE 100 showing some growth, Britain’s economy is continuing to be adversely affected by the low pound – which, at one point in July, became the world’s worst-performing major currency. Ahead of the G20 summit in early September, the Japanese government shared its “serious concerns” about the global uncertainties created by the UK’s vote to pull out of the EU. President Obama similarly shared his view that Brexit wasn’t the right decision to make, and that there was no “immediate priority” for a UK-US trade deal once Article 50 is triggered. The hard work is only just beginning It is clear that the Government has a lot of work ahead to make the right decisions for the future of the United Kingdom after it has left the EU. Decisions on a whole host of vital subjects – from immigration and trade to environment and health – are expected to be made in the coming months in what will be fascinating viewing for citizens of the UK and indeed, the world. How will Brexit affect you? Let us know on Twitter using @ Inandaroundmag.

so you should make sure that you are not holding them when you have a sparkler in your hand.
Facts for Bonfire Night Blue is the hardest colour to produce in a firework while orange is the easiest. Rockets can reach speeds of 150mph. Queen Elizabeth I loved fireworks so much she created a “Fire Master of England” while King James II was so impressed with his coronation display that he knighted his Fire Master! Until 1959 it was illegal to not celebrate Bonfire Night in the UK!
Staying safe during the fireworks. When Bonfire Night calls, there’s nothing quite as exciting as watching fireworks light the sky. Whether you decide to buy your fireworks and host a display at home, or you attend an event such as the Riverside Fireworks Display in Chester-le-Street, sitting back and taking in the sights can be a great way to round off the evening. Keeping yourself safe, however, should always be a priority. According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust, more than 550 children a year are taken to A&E in the four weeks surrounding Bonfire Night alone, and the Country Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service reported over 120 calls on Bonfire Night in 2014. It’s clear that many of us need to take greater care to stay safe during the fireworks season, so we’ve put together some top tips for you to follow. Keeping your children safe Although most children would enjoy nothing more than to hold a sparkler during Bonfire Night, you should avoid giving one to anybody under five. For older children, ensuring that they are supervised and are wearing gloves is the best way to reduce the chances of an accident. Sparklers may seem relatively safe. However, they can reach temperatures of over 2000ºC, so it is essential that you supervise your children. When the sparklers have burned out, throwing them into a bucket of water will ensure they aren’t picked up or stood on. Babies, children and pets can all wriggle in your arms and reach out unexpectedly,

Hosting your bonfire event If you are hosting a firework display, laying down rope to serve as a marker is a great idea. By giving children and adults alike a space where they can relax and enjoy the fireworks safely, you can better ensure that they don’t wander into the display while you are trying to light fireworks. To keep your fireworks safe, store them in a metal box and out of direct sunlight until they are ready to be used, and always buy your fireworks from a reputable supplier such as the local supermarket – knock-off or out-of-date fireworks can be deadly. Before you start your display, you should assign firework duties to a single person, and make sure that they steer clear of alcohol. Use a torch rather than a naked flame to read the instructions, and never get too close to the fireworks when you light them – holding them at arm’s length is best. Once your fireworks have been lit, don’t go back to them – sometimes, they can be slow to get started and may take you by surprise. After your display has finished, make sure that anybody who is helping to clear up uses gloves or tongs to collect all of the leftover fireworks. If you want a bonfire as part of your celebrations, setting it up at least 60 feet away from your house and its surrounding trees, hedges and fences is best. For all fireworks and bonfire displays, try to keep the noise down – especially after 11pm. What to do in an emergency If the worst does happen, it is important that you are prepared. Make sure that you have spare buckets of water at the ready so that you can put any fires or cool any burns immediately. Keeping burns under cold running water for at least 10 minutes should help to alleviate some of the pain. Don’t touch the burn or pull away any clothing that has become attached to it. If somebody catches fire, get them to drop to the ground and roll until the fire stops. Don’t forget that during Bonfire Night, you can visit your A&E department, phone the NHS helpline on 111 or call 999 in an emergency.

Rebecca Harbron Gray, head of Wills, Trusts and Probate at GBLF, explores commonly asked questions which come with making a Lasting Power of Attorney, as well as the steps to take to ensure affairs are in order when entering retirement. My family keep telling me a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) would benefit me but I am not ready to lose control of my affairs. What should I do?
Having an LPA in place gives family members and loved ones the authority to legally assist you, providing reassurance that they can help you further if needed, without any legal implications.
It is really important to make a distinction between making the LPA and losing control. Just because you make it now, does not mean you have lost capacity and control of your affairs. You retain the control over when the Lasting Power of Attorney begins to be used and indeed there is an overwhelming responsibility on your chosen Attorneys to consult with you even when you have authorised the document to be used.
Making an LPA doesn’t always mean that you instantly lose capacity and control of your affairs. You retain control over when the LPA begins to be used, and when it comes into play as part of the procedure, your chosen Attorneys are responsible for consulting with you during this period.
Your family are most likely just wanting to be sure that should anything happen to you they are legally allowed to assist you.

Spire Washington Hospital. Spire Washington Hospital offers comprehensive private hospital services to patients from the North East of England, including Sunderland, Durham, Newcastle upon Tyne and Northumberland.
“We currently have 36 patient beds, and due to growing referrals we have just begun our phased redevelopment. This involves full refurbishment of all of our bedrooms to bring them in-line with luxury hotel standards.
Shelagh Alderson, Hospital Director at Spire Washington Hospital, joined the hospital in 1993 originally as a Chartered Physiotherapist. Since then she has progressed through the ranks as Paramedical Services Manager and Head of Clinical Services, before taking on her current role in 2013. She speaks about how the services offered at the hospital have evolved over the years.
“Our team of highly trained and experienced consultants, nurses and wider hospital team will ensure you receive first class care throughout your stay, from the initial booking process with our Customer Service Advisors, to your consultation, right through to surgery and any aftercare. “In terms of the hospital’s evolution, times have changed significantly – looking back, healthcare was very different to how it is now. Relationships with the doctors were more formal and the care was a lot more prescriptive. The focus was on the patient fitting around the service rather than our approach now, where every patient receives a plan of individualised treatment options at a time to suit them. Our focus however is on delivering excellent patient care.
“At Spire Washington Hospital you can access our first class services at a time to suit you. We now have over 190 consultants, covering a wide range of specialties from diagnostic imaging such as X-Ray, MRI, Ultrasound and CT to major procedures including spinal and orthopaedic surgery as well as bariatric surgery, gynaecology, ENT and general surgical procedures. “A common misconception with independent healthcare providers is that you’re only able to access the services if you’re covered with private health insurance. At Spire Washington Hospital, you can access our services in a number of ways, including using your private medical insurance, paying for your own treatment or attending the hospital via the NHS. “Our hospital is situated in a quiet residential area with extensive grounds and free car parking, making it a relaxing haven and friendly atmosphere for patients and visitors alike. We’re within easy reach of the A1 (m) and welcome patients from across our region and further afield. 30 | IN&AROUND
“What is clear is that over the years the strict organisational hierarchies and hospital infrastructures have changed. Patients are rightly given more privacy and dignity. As technology has improved, the skills of surgeons and anaesthetists have become more complex, enhancing surgical abilities and resulting in quicker recovery times. “Here at Spire Washington Hospital we pride ourselves on the level of customer service we offer. Our staff and consultants go out of their way for patients to make their journey with us smooth from beginning to end and this shows in our patient feedback.”

WHAT’S ON TV THIS MONTH
Westworld
The Apprentice Tutankhamun
I
D
f there’s anyone in the worlds of film and TV who has proven he possesses something of a Midas touch when it comes to rebooting old sci-fi franchises, it has to be J. J. Abrams. The American is one of the ‘men of the moment’ on account of his sterling work in bringing both the Star Trek and Star Wars universes firmly into the 2010s, so it’s now time to see how he fares with slightly more obscure source material. That material is the 1973 sci-fi western-thriller film written and directed by novelist Michael Crichton, Westworld, about a futuristic amusement park run by robots that then start killing the visitors. Although the film and its sequel, Futureworld, did inspire a short-lived TV series back in 1980, there will be slightly higher expectations for this latest attempt at a small-screen spin-off. That is not least due to the sheer calibre of the main players involved, including not only Abrams as one of the show’s executive producers, but also such acting luminaries as Sir Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton and Evan Rachel Wood. If the atmospheric trailer is anything to go by, Westworld may turn out to be more than deserving of the billing that it has already gained in some quarters as the “new Game of Thrones”. Tune into the 10-part series on Sky Atlantic from this month. 32 | IN&AROUND
onald Trump may have left his role on the American Apprentice series to focus on his presidential campaign, but on this side of the Atlantic, certain things never change. All indications are that with Trump’s British counterpart Sir Alan Sugar’s own involvement in politics currently limited to his post as HM Government Enterprise Advisor and membership of the House of Lords, he will be on hand to once again dole out his legendary “You’re fired!” command to a new set of hopeful candidates. Strictly speaking, of course, the big prize isn’t an “apprenticeship” at all, with winners from series seven onwards instead rewarded with a £250,000 investment from Sugar in their business or venture. Nonetheless, the sheer competition, tension and entertainment value of the show remain much the same as they have always done, with the notorious ambition and egos of the candidates often getting the better of them as they are split into two teams and assigned a new task each week. At the time that IN&AROUND was going to press, we were yet to learn the identities of this season’s candidates. However, we can expect Sugar to be joined by his on-screen aides from last year’s series, Karren Brady and Claude Litner. Watch the 12th series of The Apprentice this month on BBC One.
W
e may all recognise the name ‘King Tut’, but not all of us know every detail of the tale of his cursed tomb, including its 1922 discovery that grabbed headlines across the globe and got the world fascinated about seemingly all things ancient Egypt. So, what better time could there be - almost a century later - for a new four-part ITV mini-series on such historically momentous events? Max Irons takes the starring role as British archaeologist Howard Carter, who we join in the year 1905 as he fervently leads an Egyptian expedition. Still only in his early 20s, Carter has an easy relationship with the Egyptian men working alongside him, but amid his grim determination to uncover lost antiquities in the baking heat of the Valley of the Kings, he gets hotheaded and after an incident, finds his license to dig revoked. Years later, however, Carter is thrown a lifeline by the eccentric aristocrat Lord Carnarvon (Sam Neill), who has been leading amateur excavations of his own, but requires expert help. The series charts Carter’s incredible transformation from a nobody on the fringes of society, to the man who gains immortal status as the discoverer of Tutankhamun’s final resting place. Walk like an Egyptian to ITV when the series begins sometime this month.

SOME EASY-TO-OVERLOOK GEMS IN COUNTY DURHAM High Force Key to the appeal of County Durham as a whole is the number of opportunities it offers for peacefulness and relaxation. The county’s largely rural character is a big reason for this; whenever you’re feeling uptight and would appreciate the feeling of having basically left the often stressful world behind, you don’t have to travel far at all to get it. If you’re a bit of a nature lover and decide to try exploring Teesdale, large parts of which are within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you might stumble across the beautiful waterfall known as High Force. Located near Middleton-in-Teesdale, which is itself on Teesdale’s north side, it has a fall of 71 feet – a doubtless impressive height. The
waterfall is actually slowly moving upstream, thanks to the rock wearing away – hence the narrow and deep gorge that, today, you can see in front of the waterfall. The northern bank of High Force can be accessed through a private footpath for which there is a charge. The southern bank, on the other hand, is possible to reach through a public footpath – there is no fee to pay to access this. If you do visit, you’ll be following in the footsteps of the renowned Romanticist painter J. M. W. Turner, who arrived at the waterfall on 3 August 1816 – a year after the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
Tanfield Railway It’s difficult to overlook the influence that County Durham has had on the development of public railways; a good case in point is the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened in 1825. However, while that is considered the world’s first steam-operated public railway, it certainly isn’t the oldest railway still in existence; that descriptor should arguably go instead to another railway in County Durham, the unassuming Tanfield Railway. Though it is now very much a heritage railway, the opportunity to admire the beautiful scenery of County Durham from preserved industrial diesel and steam tank locomotives isn’t the only reason to seek it out. That’s because, on Sundays right through the year, it actually operates a passenger service, which runs three miles between the County Durham village of Tanfield and the large village of Sunniside in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead.
34 | IN&AROUND
The claim of Tanfield Railway to be the world’s oldest railway stems from the intact line’s oldest section, which dates from 1725. The current preserved line also passes near the world’s oldest surviving railway bridge, Causey Arch, which was built between 1725 and 1727. While you could consider Tanfield Railway’s unique place in railway history enough reason to visit, there are also regular events – including open days, markets and seasonal events – that could make sampling this fascinating train line even more fun.

One of the perennial highlights of the event is the Big Read, which is especially poignant this year, given its focus on Durham resident and Booker Prize-winning author Pat Barker's novel Regeneration, which explores the impact of war on British army officers during the First World War. This flagship event of the festival, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Somme offensive, brings together Pat Barker and Michael Morpurgo at Durham Cathedral.
Once one of the best-kept secrets in the region's cultural calendar, Durham Book Festival has truly come into its own in recent years, and in 2015 attracted more than 17,000 literary types via 60 events featuring leading authors, poets and thinkers.
With the host of other talented writers, thinkers and performers set to appear at the festival ranging from Laura Bates, Kamal Kaan and Anthony Horowitz to Inua Ellams, James Rebanks and Kathryn Williams, if you are even on nodding terms with all things bookish, we suggest that you mark the 7th to 16th October event in your calendar without delay.
As you might expect, this year's event - which as usual, is produced by New Writing North and supported by Durham University and Arts Council England - offers a packed events programme in and around the beautiful city of Durham.

Families can expect a magic carpet of a ride from Saturday 26 to Monday 28 November in Aladdin, and with lots of music, chilling moments and laughs, Little Red Riding Hood and Other Tales makes for ideal seasonal entertainment on Thursday 22 December. For more information on all of these events, please visit www.bishopaucklandtownhall. org.uk, and to book tickets, please contact our Box Office on 03000 269 524.
