Welcome to the latest issue of IN&AROUND! I had to double-check what edition of IN&AROUND we’re working on, as the weather hasn’t exactly been living up to expectations recently. Hopefully, by the time you’re reading this, the sun will well and truly have his hat on and you’ll be wondering what on earth I’m talking about! We’re working on some big changes for IN&AROUND magazine as we progress with our long-term vision of helping as many small business owners as possible in the local area. One change that I’m very proud of is our online presence; we’ve revamped our social media strategy and as our advertisers will already know, you’ll see a lot of time and effort and hopefully benefit from what we’re doing on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. In fact, what we’re doing for our advertisers, for no extra cost, is a social media service that is worth at least £250 per month (we’re in the same office as our sister company Jak HQ, a creative agency that offers this service). We’re not only providing a magazine that has useful, interesting content that readers want to pick up on a monthly basis, but we’re also adding extra value to the advertisers that see the benefits of increasing their brand exposure through print. The added bonus moving forward is that they will also be getting extra exposure online absolutely free of charge! If you’re interested in advertising your business in our local magazine, please give us a call on 0191 388 2698 or email sales@inandaroundmag.co.uk. We have a range of advertiser packages available, with big discounts for three and six-month plans. As always, a huge thanks to our loyal and new readers for all of your support. Enjoy your August and see you next month!

WHAT’S ON TV THIS MONTH Ray Donovan

The Tick

Sky Atlantic

Amazon Prime

This crime drama series first aired in 2013 to a recordbreaking reception; the pilot episode attracted more viewers than any previous premiere on the US network Showtime. If you still haven’t watched the show for yourself to see what all the fuss is about, the upcoming fifth series will let you make amends when it hits Sky Atlantic.

Thanks to Deadpool, audiences can easily get on board with the idea of a silly superhero - and they don’t come much dafter than the Tick. A creation of cartoonist Ben Edlund, he’s spoofed his way through comic books and a popular ‘90s animated series - and now he’s back...

On the subject of making amends, that is exactly what the title character – played to sparkling effect by Liev Schreiber – does for clients of his law firm Goldman & Drexler. Well, sort of. In his role as a “fixer”, Donovan arranges such shady activities as bribes, threats, and payoffs in a bid to quell stories of his rich and famous clients’ dubious activities. But nothing would go awry in family man Donovan’s own personal life, right? Wrong! The show has seen his intimidating father Mickey, impressively portrayed by Jon Voight, surprisingly leave prison and the FBI endeavouring to stop Ray in his tracks. The fifth season arrives at 9pm on 16th August.

It’s Peter Serafinowicz who takes the role in Amazon’s liveaction adaptation - or, rather, returns to the role which we previously saw him fulfil to aplomb in the pilot that aired last year. If you saw that show and enjoyed his delivery of such faux-serious lines as “Evil wears every possible mitten”, you could have a lot more of this delightfully quirky material coming your way on 25th August. Edlund himself is executive producing this series - so, you can expect Serafinowicz’s portrayal to stay true to the central character. Will he outperform Seinfeld star Patrick Warburton, who played the Tick in our hero’s last major live-action outing in the 2000s?

The Defenders Netflix

In recent years, comics giant Marvel has been serving up an array of TV show treats exclusively for Netflix viewers – and this new series, The Defenders, brings together the stars of four of them. So, step forward Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, and Finn Jones as Iron Fist. It’s like The Avengers in microcosm… That is a pretty apt comparison – as, like the Avengers movies, The Defenders is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and so has continuity with its films. In the first series of The Defenders, all four of our protagonists are facing personal challenges, but soon realise how well they might be able to work as a team. That should hopefully bode well for them as, in New York City, they battle the order of mystical ninjas known as The Hand. If you’ve loved other small screen Marvel/Netflix collaborations, be sure to stream the episodes of this one when they are released on 18th August.

IS IT POSSIBLE THAT BREXIT WON’T HAPPEN AT ALL?

There has been a ‘rustling’ in recent times, an indication that matters aren’t quite as certain as they seemed previously. Yes, we’re talking once more about Brexit. Since the general election, it seems that more and more people are beginning to ask whether the UK’s impending departure from the EU may now never come to pass. The doubts are starting to creep in

perceived negative impact on the UK. Former foreign secretary Lord Hague, for example, told a House of Lords committee last month that it was “logical” to expect the UK to lose foreign policy influence in both Brussels and Washington as a consequence of the country exiting the bloc. But has Brexit been chalking up “quiet successes” already?

The likelihood right now is that despite an unexpected general election result that saw the wipeout of Theresa May’s majority in parliament, the UK will, indeed, still leave the EU. At the time of this article being written, Paddy Power was offering still fairly long odds of 20/1 on the Prime Minister performing a U-turn this year by announcing that the UK would remain in the bloc.

There is, of course, a competing school of thought that, in the words of current foreign secretary Boris Johnson in response to his predecessor, Britain will be “more outward-looking, more engaged, and more active on the world stage than ever before” once it ceases to be a member of the EU. Nor has he exactly been alone, as many have been eager to point out what they claim to be under-celebrated triumphs by Brexit even as formal negotiations have barely begun.

However, there have been some jitters in the aftermath of a much stronger-than-anticipated election showing for the Labour Party. In early July, Newsnight political editor Nicholas Watt said that he was “beginning to hear talk in some quarters that Brexit may not actually happen. I spoke to one Leave supporter who now fears that a combination of a stalling economy and investor fear over a possible [Labour leader Jeremy] Corbyn premiership could create a storm that could stall Brexit.”

As a lead article in the conservative magazine The Spectator points out, “some 85 percent of the public [in the recent election] voted for parties promising a clean exit from the European Union, the better to retrieve sovereignty and freedom to negotiate our own trade deals with the rest of the world. It was a call not to withdraw from the world, but to manage globalisation better; a reminder that the nation state still matters, especially to those who look to it for protection.”

Sure enough, June was a disappointing month for the UK economy, as both the construction and manufacturing industries saw a slowdown in growth, while inflation hit 2.9% - a four-year high far exceeding the Bank of England’s 2% target.

The magazine states that we should “ignore the doom-mongers, and the EU’s attempts to embarrass Britain - a good deal is looking likelier than ever”. Naturally, though, only time will tell whether that seemingly all-important “good deal” will actually come to pass...

These headlines arrive as there continue to be mutters from high-profile figures about Brexit’s 12 | IN&AROUND

NORTH EASTS HIDDEN GEMS

Bon Bons Sweets & Shakes, Chester-le-Street Do a Google search for Bon Bons – using the term “Bon Bons Chester-le-Street” – and you’ll see a listing that describes this little place as a sweet shop. Well, it’s certainly that; walk into the vibrant-looking unit on the County Durham town’s Front Street and you’ll see a massive range of sweet treats on display. Fancy some Fruit Salads? Sarsaparilla Tablets? Sour Patch Kids? Oreo Brownies? These are just a few of the goodies here that could leave you salivating. However, Bon Bons isn’t just a sweet shop – it’s also a quirkilystyled bar in which you can sip a wide range of drinks while watching the outside world go by. The fruity drinks on offer here include Fanta in strawberry, mango, and grape flavours and Minute Maid pink lemonade. Bons Bons is also a good place to bring kids, who are likely to delight that the staff can make milkshakes from many different big-name confectionary

products. There are other places in the North East that provide these kind of shakes, but none of the places I’ve personally tried have felt as friendly and welcoming. Admittedly, probably a big reason why is that those places didn’t provide a lot of space in which you could stay and enjoy your drink; they felt very much like instances of “Here’s your drink; all of our work is done now”. As I tucked into a Kinder Bueno shake while gazing out of the window, having learned that shakes made from Oreos, Reeses peanut butter, and Millions Bubblegum were also available, I had good reason to be grateful that Bon Bons isn’t afraid to do things differently. That’s before I even mention the wide choice of ice cream I saw clearly displayed just inside the entrance…

Darlington College There’s hardly a shortage of further education colleges in County Durham. However, if the end of your own school days saw you eager to learn something technical, like engineering, healthcare or journalism, you might have enrolled at what used to be called Darlington College of Technology. Admittedly, if you went there during the days when it had that name, you would probably barely recognise the college – now simply called Darlington College – were you to visit it today. 14 | IN&AROUND

Since 2006, this educational institution has occupied a gorgeous modern building – which, with its uniform grey blocks protruding out of a stunning glass hub, looks akin to a spaceship that has landed down beside Haughton Road. The quality of the education provided within the college’s walls was commended by Ofsted last year; this should give you confidence if you decide to join yourself. It’d be an opportunity to join the college’s alumni, including former BBC

Chief Political Correspondent John Sergeant. When picking up an honorary degree from one of the college’s partner institutions, Teesside University, in 2010, he spoke fondly of his time at Darlington. He recalled: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and owe all my success to Darlington. There is no question about that.”

DUNKIRK I

f you’re looking for a romanticised war film that skates over the harsh realities of war, this isn’t it. There are no shots of families waiting for their return at home, no context or background at all. In fact, it is an utterly immersive experience that redefines the meaning of a war film in just 100 minutes. From the director with a filmography like no other who brought us The Dark Knight, Interstellar and Inception, Christopher Nolan presents yet another groundbreaking film. We all know the story of the Dunkirk evacuation where small civilian boats rescued stranded troops from France in 1940, but that doesn’t stop Nolan’s brutally

honest film being unimaginably tense throughout. The film opens with Nazi leaflets falling on a few British soldiers, alone on the empty streets of Dunkirk, announcing that they are surrounded, and the realisation hits that the only way out is by sea. From this moment on, music by Hans Zimmer makes the film unbearably intense, underlying the action like a heartbeat. In fact, the music is the driving force of the film as large sections play with no dialogue at all and any dialogue spoken is almost entirely practical. The film explores the three perspectives of the land, the air

and the sea, all taking place over different time frames but woven together seamlessly. This 12A film does not dwell on the glory of war and the Germans are hardly seen at all, although their threat is ever present. Instead, it is a celebration of heroism in the face of unimaginable suffering. Their constant bravery is inspiring. With that said, however, Nolan does not disguise the helplessness of the protagonists or the unimaginable terror of the 400,000 soldiers on Dunkirk beach. The film depicts the cold reality of war, following everything from Tom Hardy’s Spitfire and the destroyers which fast become a target, to Mr Dawson’s civilian boat, which all

I hope the film takes people on an exciting, visceral journey into this experience, but that they’re ultimately moved by the human story that anchors it all. That’s what Chris does so well with all films, and very much so with Dunkirk.

Cillian Murphy

play their part in returning the British heroes home. The idea of home is what brings the troops hope, as Kenneth Branagh’s character reminds us: “you can practically see it from here.” The three main characters, who despite looking somewhat confusingly similar in the chaos, are all cast well – yes, even Harry Styles. There was a certain level of controversy over the casting of the former One Direction star, but while you perhaps experience a twinge of recognition when he first appears, you are so completely immersed in the action that you soon forget who he is. He certainly deserves the part, playing a character who portrays the extremes to which

war pushes us in the desperate fight for survival. While other directors have tackled the Second World War and even the Dunkirk evacuation, this is a war film like no other. Nolan explores heroism, desperation and the utter terror that war brings. This film will certainly be a classic and should be seen on the biggest screen possible.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHESTER-LE-STREET Chester-le-Street is an unassuming little town, lying almost exactly between Newcastle and Durham – it’s even on the same railway line – but much smaller in population than both. This doesn’t take away from the long and eventful history of the town, which was the resting place of St Cuthbert’s body for over a century before Durham Cathedral became the site of the saint’s tomb. So, when some of the biggest events of British – and indeed, world – history were unfolding, what was going on in Chester-le-Street? It’s not always easy to discern, but we’ve given it a good go. Romans and monks stop by Chester-le-Street’s history is often deemed to have had its genesis with the construction of a Roman fort, called Concangis, around 100 A.D.; that building was beside Cade’s Road, a Roman road that has since become the current town’s Front Street. The Romans occupied the fort until that ancient civilisation finally departed from British shores in 410 A.D.; during the site’s occupation, the River Wear may have been used to transport food to garrisons stationed at Concangis. You can still see the fort’s remains in Chester-le-Street today, behind a board providing information about the site.

Georgian era writer best known for the novel Robinson Crusoe, expressed the same kind of sentiment.

No record of Chester-le-Street’s inhabitants, bar some wounded soldiers, over the four centuries after the Romans’ departure is known today. However, in 883, a group of monks with St Cuthbert’s body in tow stopped in the area to construct a shrine and church to the late saint. At this church, the monks translated the Lindisfarne Gospels, an ancient book now kept at the British Library in London, into English. In 995, the monks left for Durham.

However, a catalyst for the town’s later growth was the coal industry. Coal was increasingly dug locally starting in the late seventeenth century. Chester-le-Street’s location made the settlement a convenient centre for coal-related commerce, while various local businesses including inns and shops were fuelled by arriving miners. During the 1811-12 winter, local miners went on strike before, on New Year’s Day 1812, then-Bishop of Durham Shute Barrington broke the stand-off.

A town transformed by coal

The town’s impressive history has left a variety of intriguing buildings and structures with elements dating back decades or centuries. Those landmarks include the parish church of St Mary and St Cuthbert, parts of which are nearly a millennium old; the 14th-century Lumley Castle; and an Art Deco style Post Office displaying a rare royal cypher from Edward VIII’s brief reign in 1936.

Despite these events, it would be fair to say that, for much of its history, Chester-le-Street has been – befitting its modern name – little more than the road that we now know as Front Street. During the 1530s, a tumultuous decade in which England was reeling from Henry VIII’s decision to dissolve the monasteries, the poet and antiquary John Leland called the town “chiefly one main street of very mean building in height”. PLACES TO GO...

The Shambles

YORK, North Yorkshire York has more world class sights and attractions per square mile than any other city in the UK. You’re spoiled for choice. If you like going underground, for example, there’s York Minster crypt, the Roman bath house under a pub in St Sampson’s Square, the York Dungeons for a spooky experience, the cellars of the National Trust’s Treasurer’s House with its ghostly legends of Roman legions, and a cold war bunker in the care of English Heritage. Here the Royal Observer Corps would have plotted nuclear explosions and survived underground for up to 30 days after nuclear war began. The bunker is outside the city centre, 1 ¼ miles from the station, walkable along the Acomb Road or use local bus 1. All of the other attractions are to the east of the station, except the free to enter National Railway 30 | IN&AROUND

Museum which is best reached by the footbridge and footpath from all platforms. Afterwards it offers a halfhourly dotto train (a train which is really a tractor pulling rubber-tyred

carriages) to a stop on Duncombe Place close to the Minster. The Minster charges for admission, but if you wish to avoid this the best way is to attend a service. Evensong is sung most afternoons by the choir and you get a much better experience taking part in the worship than

paying to walk round. Of course, the plate goes round at the end, and you’ll probably wish to make a voluntary donation. The more energetic might try a free walk around the walls, which takes around two hours around the 45 towers, including Micklegate Bar where children will be entranced to hear the sad story of the little girl who lost the keys to the City. Wall walking is not wise in icy weather, but should be ok in August!. York offers plenty of opportunity for eating and drinking and staying over. Chocoholics will love the story of chocolate in King’s Square. I have used the Bar Convent at Bootham Bar, where the Catholic nuns are most hospitable, even to an Anglican. The chain hotels can be expensive: on a recent trip from London to Scarborough I tried to

book a Premier Inn close to York station and the best price was £130, but I obtained the same standard of accommodation at a Premier Inn close to Doncaster station for only £31. For a relaxing trip on the River Ouse, try City Cruises York, which have recently taken over the York Boat company for £2.5m, sailing from the Lendal Bridge near the station. Have a think about going to York on Bank Holiday Monday 28th

August when the full Monday train service is operating, but the fares are at off peak rates all day. We can promise, for example, a day return trip to York from Chester-le-Street at £17.90 with railcard discounts too, for anyone going on the 0815 or 1013 trains direct to York on the bank holiday, returning any time on TransPennine trains. That compares with the published online fare day return of £37.80 you might buy on the internet, and good value fares are available from other stations too. Just ring us to book on 0191

387 1387 and we’ll post tickets out to you. Bear in mind that the Chesterle-Track team each spend nearly two thousand hours a year finding the best deals in booking tickets, so they are likely to do it quicker and more effectively than someone spending, say, four hours online a year doing the same thing. Take advantage of our experience.

WHAT’S ON IN THE NORTH-EAST

Joe McElderry – The Gloria Tour

Sunderland Empire, Thursday 10th August

South Shields singer Joe McElderry has been on a roll since winning The X-Factor in 2009. However, you could be excused for thinking that he’d swapped his music career for a life in theatre – especially given the plaudits he has recently achieved for his lead performance in Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Well, in Sunderland, he’ll be correcting that misconception… That’s because, at Sunderland Empire, he’ll be singing songs from Saturday Night At The Movies – his fifth studio album and his first since 2012’s Here’s What I Believe. The new album is packed with classic cinematic and theatrical songs including I’m into Something Good and Daydream Believer. Also on the album is Gloria, which was penned by 10CC lead singer Graham Gouldman and released as a single by Joe earlier this year. The Sunderland show will also see appearances from Any Dream Will Do runners up Ben James-Ellis and Keith Jack, who have also impressed as Joseph on stage.

Those “Nutty Boys” have come a long way, having scored big hits including “House of Fun”, “It Must Be Love”, and “Baggy Trousers” on their way to becoming ska legends. In 2012, they even performed on the roof of Buckingham Palace and at the Olympics closing ceremony; however, they will be opting for the more low-key setting of Hardwick Hall for a gig this month. John Adamson of Ramside Estates, which teamed up with Newcastlebased promotions company SSD Concerts to bring Madness to this County Durham venue, has understandably expressed delight. He commented: “The group is selling out wherever they perform so we know that there’ll be a huge audience in the North East of people wanting to see them.” On top of that, the annual music festival Hardwick Live will begin its 2017 outing on the following Saturday. Ocean Colour Scene, Pete Doherty, Buzzcocks, and Soul II Soul are among the top-drawer acts lined up for Madness Live the festival, which will also be at Hardwick Hall, this time around. Hardwick Hall, Sedgefield, Friday 18th August

Young Frankenstein

Theatre Royal, Newcastle, Sat 26th Aug – Sat 9th Sept 32 | IN&AROUND

Legendary comedian and film director Mel Brooks is readying a musical based on his 1974 comedy classic Young Frankenstein – and, surprisingly but delightfully, we’ll get to see it before West End audiences! It will be staged in Newcastle starting in late August – and aptly, Cramlington boy will be appearing as Igor, a grandson of the Igor from the original novel Frankenstein. The film Young Frankenstein has a lot of fun with the Frankenstein concept originated by Mary Shelley in her 1818 novel. That movie starred the late Gene Wilder as the eponymous lead, a respected professor and brain surgeon blighted by being descended from Victor Von Frankenstein. He does, however, have a source of comfort in lab assistant Inga, his alluring love interest. In the new stage version, Hadley Fraser will play the title role while Summer Strallen will be Inga. Also in the announced cast is Birds of a Feather star Lesley Joseph as Frau Blucher. Catch the show before it heads off to the West End in September.
