NORTH EASTS HIDDEN GEMS Durham Town Hall Even if you have often wandered through Durham city’s Market Place, you have probably failed to notice Durham Town Hall there. It’s an inconspicuous building that rather blends in with the very historical surroundings until you notice the displayed words ‘Durham Town Hall’. However, look closer at the building and you could wonder why it has escaped your notice for so long. The Town Hall’s history goes as far back as the fourteenth century. However, a £900,000 refurbishment in the late 2000s gave the Grade II* listed building some modern enhancements, including a lift and a more accessible entrance, making it even easier to enjoy. The main hall is especially awe-inspiring; built in the mid-19th century, albeit with a Medieval look, its period features include a wooden floor, stained glass windows, and oil paintings. If you attend the prestigious Durham Book Festival each year, you will probably already be familiar with the main hall, as many of the festival’s big name guests have spoken there. Former government ministers Alistair Darling and Alan Johnson and TV historians Lucy Worsley and Tracy Borman are just a few examples. Another of the building’s spaces used for Durham Book Festival events is the Burlison Gallery, the paintings in which include work from local Victorian artist Clement Burlison. As the building is a busy workplace, you should ask at reception to check that you can freely visit it. However, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it used for more Durham Book Festival events this year.

Cineworld, Dalton Park The city of Durham will, next summer, finally see an end to a long wait for its own major cinema. After having had to make do with the small-capacity Gala Cinema, the people of Durham will be able to take their seats in a new Odeon in 2018. However, there is no such wait for East Durham residents – as, on their doorstep, there is already an impressively modern Cineworld. What do you mean, you didn’t know there was a Cineworld in East Durham? Admittedly, that’s understandable – it only opened last autumn. It’s in the out-of-town retail hub Dalton Park, above the restaurant piazza. 6 | IN&AROUND

There are seven screens, meaning that it can compare well to the older Cineworld venues at nearby Boldon and Middlesbrough in showing lots of blockbuster goodies. Last year, Sunderland Echo writer Fiona Thompson got to sample the new Cineworld at a preview night, just before it started accepting paying customers. Her first impressions were positive. She hailed the free parking and close proximity of restaurants, while the entrance hall, with a ceiling of black and red neon, was declared “sparkling”.

On the subject of sparkling, there’s no shortage of soft drinks to grab before seeing a movie. Fiona got hold of a Tango Ice Blast slush, a big customer favourite, while the choice of drinks also includes lager, beer, cider, and wine. There’s also popcorn, ice cream, hotdogs and more to tuck into – unsurprising given how much Cineworld has clearly endeavoured to impress elsewhere in the venue.

WHAT DOES THE UNCERTAIN GENERAL ELECTION RESULT MEAN FOR YOU?

So, the country once more went to the polls – for the third time in as many years, or more than that if you also voted in the recent local elections – and the ‘will of the people’ was... uncertain. For the second time in the last three elections, we have ended up with a hung parliament, albeit with the Conservatives retaining their status as the largest party with 317 seats, compared to Labour’s 261. So, what does this largely unexpected result mean for you as the average County Durham resident? We basically have no idea what’ll happen with Brexit. The UK’s impending departure from the EU was pretty much Tory leader Theresa May’s reason for calling for the election in the first place – she had asked the electorate to “strengthen [her] hand in forthcoming Brexit negotiations”, but was instead left with a much-weakened one – from a 12-seat majority to none at all. The Conservatives had thrown their weight behind a ‘hard’ Brexit equating to withdrawal from the Single Market and as a consequence, an end to the free movement of trade, capital, services and people. However, Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) have all called for a ‘softer’ Brexit, and all three parties are enjoying considerably more power in this parliament, particularly the latter, with which the Tories are seemingly seeking a ‘confidence and supply’ agreement to help keep May in power. As IN&AROUND headed to press, formal negotiations between the UK and the EU were set to commence on 19th June. Yet, a full year on from the EU referendum, there remains an infuriating lack of clarity as to what kind of Brexit deal is ultimately likely to be concluded, if there is to be any at all. 8 | IN&AROUND

What implications could the Tories’ DUP linkup have? While the DUP may no longer be as overtly religious as they were during the leadership of their erstwhile founder Ian Paisley until he stepped down in 2008, they are still right-wing and socially conservative. This helps to explain why Northern Ireland remains the only country in the UK where abortion is illegal, despite it being legalised in other areas of the UK in 1967. With Northern Ireland also still the only country in the UK where gay couples cannot marry, it’s fair to say that the DUP does not have the best women’s and LGBT rights record. But it remains to be seen what implications, if any, a DUP deal could have in the wider UK, although Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson – who is gay – has claimed to have received assurances from the Prime Minister that in the event of such an agreement with the party, “there would be absolutely no rescission of LGBTI rights in the rest of the UK”. So, are all other manifesto pledges on ice? That may be so. With Labour not having enough seats to form a majority government even if it teamed up with other centre-left parties, none of its manifesto pledges look likely to come to fruition, while Brexit Secretary David Davis has admitted that elements of his own party’s manifesto will have to be “pruned away”. One thing does seem certain: with such a balanced parliament, it’ll be difficult for the Tories’ minority government in these uncertain times to get even the most routine business done. Who knows, there may even be a new election. Let’s wait and see what has transpired by the time the next issue of IN&AROUND lands on your doormat...

TRANSFORMERS THE LAST KNIGHT

t often seems that, when the Americans want to breathe some fresh life into one of their long-established screen franchises, they decide to inject a bit of British flavour. It happened with The Simpsons, then with Despicable Me (yes, we’re referring to that spinoff Minions), and now with Transformers. It’s an opportunity to mix intriguing facets of English history – think Merlin, the Knights of the Round Table, and Stonehenge – with the usual formula of giant fighting robots. The film opens with a 1,600-yearold scene on English soil, where Medieval soldiers wage a seemingly fruitless battle against wickedness while Merlin himself, 14 | IN&AROUND

played for laughs by Stanley Tucci, asks a shadowy alien creature for help. The wizard is handed a staff which, after we have fastforwarded to the present day, a good-turned-evil Optimus Prime is now on the hunt for. Meanwhile, at an English castle, Sir Edmund Burton, depicted by Sir Anthony Hopkins, breaks startling revelations to struggling inventor Cade Yeager and Oxford University professor Viviane Wembly… If you haven’t garnered the impression by now, the Transformers franchise hasn’t abandoned its love affair with ridiculously complex plotting in The Last Knight. This calls for an excessive amount of exposition, particularly from Hopkins –

who, despite practically telling long stretches of the story all by himself, looks like he is enjoying the silliness. Also, surprisingly in light of the eccentricity, Bay doesn’t indulge in the kind of British stereotyping that hampered National Treasure: Book of Secrets, which couldn’t resist having a member of Buckingham Palace staff cry “I haven’t the foggiest!” As Yeager, Mark Wahlberg continues the series’ Luke Skywalker-style starring role that he took over from Shia LaBeouf with 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction. Young English actress Laura Haddock is, along with Hopkins, a major new addition. However, there remains a paperthin characterisation to her

portrayal of Wembly, including the hints of a contrived romance with the also-conveniently-single Yeager. There are early glimmers of a more sophisticated female

character with 14-year-old orphaned tomboy Izabella; yet, though played feistily by Isabela Moner, she soon largely vanishes. Still, what a Transformers film tends to

lack in comprehensible narrative, it typically makes up for in visual spectacle and fast-paced action, of which there is a heady mix here. You might remember that, last autumn, extensive filming of The Last Knight took place in our corner of England –

and, indeed, Newcastle serves as London in an intense car chase scene. Burton’s ancestral home is Northumberland’s Alnwick Castle, which albeit appears as a fictional castle with a different name. Touches like these could, especially for a North East audience, make the more derivative parts easier to overlook. Besides, how many films have combined robots and history with this much panache?

THE HISTORY OF DURHAM CASTLE

Here in County Durham, we must be made of tough stuff considering that our area has the UK’s only castle never to have been breached! Well, okay, so it’s evidence that our ancestors, at least, were probably pretty formidable folk. It’s been a while since Durham Castle, first built in the eleventh century, served its original purpose of expressing Norman power up north. It was constructed on the orders of William the Conqueror six years after his 1066 conquest of England; however, since 1837, it has been home to University College, the oldest college of Durham University. Subduing rebels in the Norman Conquest’s wake England was a hugely different kind of place in 1066. It often appeared that a political leader relied on ruthlessness simply to hold onto their power. There were no general elections deciding who would lead the country; instead, that question was often answered on the battlefield. Such insecurity must have seemed especially strong in the case of William the Conqueror, who had no legitimate genetic claim to the throne before taking it by winning the Battle of Hastings. Keeping the north under control posed a particular challenge, not least due to its significant geographical distance from the centre of power in London. William’s strategy for meeting this challenge was to vest power in the Bishop of Durham, making that man effectively a princebishop. The king would appoint that post’s holder, who would then act as the king’s northern representative. He did that from Durham Castle, his palace. How the castle has changed over the years The castle’s first buildings were very much of Norman style, including as they did a mound called 18 | IN&AROUND

a motte and enclosed areas known as an inner and outer bailey. Parts of the Norman structure remain intact today. After a 12th-century blaze, the North Hall was partly rebuilt. In the early 14th century, Antony Bek, when Bishop of Durham, created the castle’s Great Hall. It was Britain’s largest such hall until shortened by one of Bek’s successors, Richard Foxe, at the 15th century’s end. Still, it remains 14 metres high and more than 30 metres in length. The last bishop to extensively change the castle’s architecture was John Cosin. After the monarchy’s restoration in 1660, he added, to the north-west corner, the spectacular staircase today called the Black Stairs. The castle passed into the ownership of Durham University in the early nineteenth century. Afterwards, further changes were made to allow for more students to live in the castle. What is Durham Castle like today? Today, University College – colloquially dubbed Castle – has about 700 undergraduates plus 200 postgraduates. The Senior Common Room, meanwhile, has about 400 members – including staff and visiting fellows. As the building is used by so many students and staff members, the general public can visit the castle only by joining one of the regular guided tours. However, even just sampling the structure, which is part of an UNESCO World Heritage Site, that way could feel like feasting if you love our area’s history.

Fusion Studios Kath and Chris Schrouder opened Fusion Studios, Birtley in 2013 offering a wide selection of group fitness classes. Since opening they have created a friendly fitness environment. DUMFRIES, Dumfries and Galloway

On the way to Glasgow I stopped over one night in Dumfries, a Scottish town which is a suitable day trip from the northeast, or a stopover for a short break. I enjoyed a sunny morning crossing the Tyne Valley line to Carlisle, where the station is undergoing a major roof refurbishment. I joined the slow train to Glasgow which entered Scotland at Gretna Green and arrived in Dumfries in time for lunch. On the recommendation of Fiona Forsythe, Community Rail Officer for the Newcastle to Carlisle line, I went to “The Usual Place”, a friendly community café which provides training for people with learning difficulties. There were many fillings for rolls, sandwiches, jacket potatoes and, being in Scotland, I plumped for sugar-free Irn Bru and haggis. But that might be a bit dry, so I opted for brie and cranberry with haggis which raised not an eyebrow and proved very tasty. After lunch I went for a walk on the disused railway line that used to go to Stranraer (now you have to go up to Kilmarnock and then south), and enjoyed the fine network of footpaths that run through the town. I ended up at the Old Bridge House Museum on the south side of the Devorgilla Bridge, then the Robert Burns Centre and the town museum, all free. The latter includes a Camera Obscura for which there 26 | IN&AROUND

is a charge of £3.20. I climbed to the top of the tower for a demonstration for just three of us and saw Dumfries laid out – in colour of course – on a giant white saucer. Back to the hotel to check in at the Station Hotel. I asked very nicely if I could get up inside the lantern which tops the building but was politely refused. A shame, since I am sure many people would enjoy the view. But not of the camera obscura, which was obscured by trees. I had to content myself with the view over the station from the third floor, room 43, a pleasant double in the roof eaves. Amazingly I managed never to bump my head.

a building with the Gala bingo which uses the former stalls, and the cinema uses the former circle. Robert Burns is never far away in Dumfries, and I even discovered a volume of his English verses which are easier on the southern ear. The house where he died in 1796 at the age of 37 is still standing and can be visited, also for free. This simple red sandstone house gives a fascinating view of how the poet and his family lived and is now a place of pilgrimage for Burns enthusiasts from around the world.

As it happened I had arrived in the midst of the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival so there was plenty of available entertainment. I was tempted by the ghost walk starting at St. Michael’s Church, where the mausoleum of Robbie Burns is. But on a summer night at 19.00 it didn’t seem particularly spooky and I went to the film theatre instead. But I could have gone to the Theatre Royal or the single screen Odeon cinema. I was under the impression that there were no one screen Odeons left, and this one shares

Dumfries town centre is mostly pedestrianised and easy to walk around. The river occasionally bursts its banks and the buses have to move stops above the flood plain, but the railway line is on higher ground and a reliable way to reach this interesting town.

WHAT’S ON TV THIS MONTH Ross Kemp: Extreme World

The Last Tycoon

Many of us may still – and will forever – know him as EastEnders’ Grant Mitchell, but Ross Kemp has been hugely successful in recent years in reinventing himself as an investigative journalist.

The American series The Last Tycoon is loosely based on the final, unfinished book of the celebrated novelist and short-story writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. It stars Matt Bomer as widower and film producer Monroe Stahr, who battles his boss Pat Brady to contravene the regulations relating to mainstream Hollywood film production increasingly imposed by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi government in the late 1930s.

Sky 1 has been broadcasting Ross Kemp: Extreme World since 2011, showing Kemp’s explorations of various forms of hardship around the world – from violence and drug addiction to illicit trade and homelessness. However, it has also been confirmed that the upcoming sixth series will be the programme’s last. Ross Kemp: Extreme World typically features Kemp speaking to the authorities who are attempting to tackle the problems he is investigating, and trying to establish contact with ringleaders to get to the source of the issue.

The character of Stahr is loosely based on the famous producer Irving Thalberg, and with the likes of Lily Collins (the daughter of Genesis lead singer Phil Collins), Dominique McElligott (House of Cards) and Jessica De Gouw (Arrow) also in the cast, we’re not surprised that at least one writer has described it as “Amazon’s newest hidden gem”. The first series of The Last Tycoon airs from 28th July on Amazon Prime, following a successful pilot last summer.

His efforts have made for much-watched TV down the years, and we don’t doubt that much the same will be the case when the show returns this month.

Game of Thrones Sky Atlantic

What can possibly be said about Game of Thrones that hasn’t been said already? Adapted from George R. R. Martin’s fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire and set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, the programme has attracted a huge and active international fan base and a host of accolades, both of which will surely grow still further with the arrival of series seven. The continual battling and backstabbing among noble families for influence and power have helped to make Game of Thrones immensely compelling viewing since the first series’ debut in 2011, although it has also caused controversy over its depictions of sex and nudity. In the process, such stars of its ensemble cast as Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister, and Emilia Clarke, for her role as Daenerys Targaryen, have gained millions of fans around the world. Since the previous, sixth series, the TV show has actually been broadcast ahead of the published books, while season seven will premiere at 2am on 17th July on Sky Atlantic, at the same time as the US. This means there will be plenty of capacity for surprise as Game of Thrones continues its astounding run. 32 | IN&AROUND
