Leading northern roofing company proudly launches new website Roofing is an aspect of a home that never seems to receive much attention until a disaster happens that requires immediate attention – yet, it is also one of the most important parts of any property to install, maintain and repair appropriately. This only makes it all the more crucial, when your own roofing or another element of your home requires the services of the right roofers and builders, to choose a company that you can truly trust. Few companies anywhere in the North East of England or beyond have as strong a claim to be ‘that’ company as Findley Roofing & Building. The firm has been providing impeccable roofing and building services across our region for more than 40 years now. Amid sustained growth in recent years, the business has more than 100 highly capable and qualified staff on its payroll – as well as big ambitions to grow beyond its home region in the months and years to come. It is as part of this that Findley Roofing & Building has recently launched its new website, designed by the leading North East creative agency JAK HQ. It’s a visually impressive, easy to navigate and informative website that will be instrumental in keeping the company ahead of its industry rivals. The firm will also be running an advertising campaign on ITV to coincide with the re-launch, 6 | IN&AROUND

and which will help to spread the word of its services and expertise throughout the region, as well as its free roof health checks and 0% finance on new roofs. JAK HQ’s Joe Crooks commented: “Developing a working relationship with the North East’s fastest growing roofing company has been a pleasure. We had to bring our ‘A game’ to ensure we delivered a great website that suited the client’s needs and matched their aspirations. Redesigning the website again from scratch and taking over the current SEO and social within a short space of time was no easy task. However, we did it with fantastic results, and we’re all very proud of the outcome.” Whether you are seeking the installation or repair of a flat roof, EPDM roof, rubber roof, slate roof or garage roof – to say nothing of the extensive range of other building services that the company offers, such as PAREX rendering, brickwork repointing, conservatories and garage extensions – it seems that there really is no need to look any further than Findley Roofing & Building.

What’s on in the North East Rob Brydon: I Am Standing Up, Newcastle City Hall The Welsh actor and comic is a familiar presence in our living rooms, thanks to his highly successful tenure since 2009 as host of the BBC’s hilarious panel show Would I Lie To You? Now, we need to trust that he really is coming to Tyneside on Saturday 7th October as part of his latest stand-up tour (he is). Having also received much acclaim since 2010 for his role in The Trip - in which he stars alongside Steve Coogan - Brydon is actually embarking on his first stand-up shows since his sell-out national tour and West End run in 2009. Given how his career continues to go from strength to strength, it might be our last chance to see him in the North East for a while - so we’d suggest that you call the Theatre Royal Box Office on 08448 11 21 21 or purchase tickets from www.theatreroyal.co.uk for £37.

Mamma Mia!, Sunderland Empire You can’t get a more feel-good party at this otherwise glum time of year than Mamma Mia!, the hugely acclaimed musical that has been running to great success around the world since its premiere at London’s Prince Edward Theatre in 1999. As its title suggests, the production is based around the hit songs of ABBA. Nor is it just the 1975 chart-topper “Mamma Mia” that you will hear, with such other iconic tracks as “Super Trooper”, “Dancing Queen”, “Take a Chance on Me” and “Knowing Me, Knowing You” all getting an airing. The show weaves such timeless sing-along tunes around a compellingly told story of love, friendship and identity set on a Greek island paradise. Central to the tale is Sophie, who seeks out the father she’s never known, only for her mother to come face-to-face with three men from her distant romantic past on the eve of a wedding that turns out to be unforgettable. It’s funny, life-affirming and in the words of the Sunday Express, “the sunniest of all musicals”. Nab your tickets for its 17th October to 11th November run now, priced between £17.50 and £59.50, by calling 0844 871 3022.

Durham Book Festival The annual Durham Book Festival may be a celebration of all things books, but it’s not just an exciting event for bibliophiles, with its host of book-based discussions and interactive events throughout Durham set to focus once again on seemingly every subject from politics and poetry to fiction and feminism. Highlights of this year’s festival include the appearance of Woman’s Hour presenter Dame Jenni Murray at Gala Theatre to talk about A History of Britain in 21 Women, as well as June Sarpong’s Diversify, in which the author and broadcaster considers whether we can live without prejudice. With others lined up to star at the festival from 7th to 15th October ranging from Lissa Evans and Alan Hollinghurst to Chris Ryan and Sophie Hannah, we’d suggest that you book your tickets right now before your preferred event sells out. Prices vary, so visit www.durhambookfestival.com or call 03000 266 600.

WHAT’S ON TV

The Gadget Show The Gadget Show has been a hit consumer technology programme for Channel 5 since its debut in 2004, previewing and reviewing the latest gadgets and even spawning the Gadget Show Live series of events. This year has already seen big changes for the programme, with Gadget Show Live having been axed and Jason Bradbury and Amy Williams both exiting as hosts. In their place have come Craig Charles and Georgie Barrat, joining existing presenters Jon Bentley and Ortis Deley. The show has also recently returned to a studio base in Birmingham. It’s all very exciting for admirers of the latest tech, and of course, with the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X having recently been unveiled, we continue to have a lot of it to get excited about. The show has achieved a host of Guinness World Records down the years and been involved in eye-catching campaigns, so while Channel 5 is remaining tight-lipped about exactly what we can expect this time around, there’s sure to be plenty of features relevant to the world of gadgets today.

Curb Your Enthusiasm The groundbreaking US comedy show starring television writer and producer Larry David as a fictionalised version of himself has been missing from our screens since 2011, so its comeback will be very much welcomed by fans of ‘cringe’ humour on both sides of the Atlantic. For those who are unaware of the show that might be fairly described as ‘cult’ on these shores, you can think of Curb as a sort of American Alan Partridge, focusing on the minutiae of David’s life, with his various faux pas and struggles with certain social conventions and expectations. His difficulty with allowing his annoyances with others to go unexpressed leads him into some hilariously awkward situations. Not only will the ninth series of the celebrated show see the return of such regular co-stars as Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, Susie Essman and J.B. Smoove, but there are also various guest stars lined up, including Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. Catch the new Curb Your Enthusiasm here in the UK on Sky Atlantic from 2nd October. 12 | IN&AROUND

The Walking Dead The post-apocalyptic horror series based on the brilliant black and white comic books of Robert Kirkman, and turned into a TV hit by Frank Darabont, returns for its eighth series on Fox (UK) from 9pm on 23rd October. If you’ve somehow so far managed to avoid this US cable ratings monster (about, erm, monsters), it focuses on the story of sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes – played by Andrew Lincoln – who awakens from a coma to find a world overrun by zombies, commonly referred to as “walkers”. Reuniting with his family, Grimes becomes the leader of a group of survivors, but they struggle to survive amid the dangers posed by not only the walkers, but also opposing groups of survivors. This eighth season of the show sees Lincoln return alongside the likes of Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan and Chandler Riggs, and adapts the All Out War story arc from the comics, with the survivors of Alexandria, the Hilltop and the Kingdom taking on Negan and the Saviors.

Safety information provided by Durham and Darlington Fire and rescue service... County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) strongly recommends that the public attend organised displays such as the one at Riverside Fireworks.

Do not throw discarded fireworks onto bonfires. Some spent fireworks still have powder left in them and other fireworks which have not gone off still contain all their explosives.

However if residents do decide to let off fireworks in their own gardens they should follow the firework code: • Only buy fireworks from reputable suppliers. • Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks. • Keep fireworks in a closed box. • Follow the instructions on each firework carefully. • Light them at arm’s length using a suitable taper. • Stand well back. • Never go back to a lit firework. • Never put fireworks in your pocket. • Never throw fireworks. • Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves. • Never give sparklers to children under five. • Keep pets indoors.

Make sure you wear the right clothing. Always wear gloves, especially when holding sparklers. Do not wear nylon clothing such as shell suits, which melt against the skin. Do not wear open-neck T-shirts, shirts or shorts that expose bare skin to the danger of fireworks. Tuck scarves in, rather than letting them trail, so they don’t catch alight.

If you are using sparklers, have a bucket of water nearby. When sparklers have gone out they should be put in the water. Water can also be used for immediate first aid treatment for burns to the hand.

Speaking about last year’s Riverside Fireworks, Chief Fire Officer, Stuart Errington said: “This event was well organised last year which meant everyone had a great night and enjoyed a safe fireworks display.” Keep safe by attending Riverside Fireworks taking place at Riverside Park, Chester-le-Street on Sunday 5th November 2017. Tickets are available to buy now from: www.riversidefireworks.co.uk. Further details can also be found at: www.facebook.com/RiversideParkFireworks.

What you need to know about this year’s party conference season First of all, an apology from the team here at IN&AROUND: by the time you read this, several of the below party conferences will have already taken place.

IN&AROUND went to press including Henry Bolton, Jane Collins, David Kurten, Aidan Powlesland, John ReesEvans, Anne Marie Waters and Peter Whittle.

Nonetheless, with the conference season being such a central part of British politics, we felt that we simply had to point you to the dates and talking points of this year’s conferences of the country’s major and small parties alike.

Conservatives The Tories’ first Conference since claiming the most seats - but losing their majority - under Theresa May in June’s general election is set to prominently feature Ruth Davidson and Jacob Rees-Mogg, who have been mentioned as possible successors to the Prime Minister.

Liberal Democrats The Lib Dems’ 2017 Autumn Conference took place from 16th to 19th September in Bournemouth. As IN&AROUND went to press, the event was already producing its share of headlines, including deputy leader Jo Swinson’s insistence that US President Donald Trump should not be invited to the UK on a state visit, and leader Sir Vince Cable talking up his claim to be an “alternative” Prime Minister. Labour Jeremy Corbyn understandably had something of a spring in his step heading into his party’s Annual Conference, which was to place from 24th to 27th September 2017 at the Brighton Centre. Although the event was yet to commence at the time of IN&AROUND’s publication, the leader of the opposition said it would be the “largest we have ever held”; however, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said that he had been excluded from the conference’s keynote speakers by the party’s leadership. United Kingdom Independence Party The UKIP 2017 National Conference was set to be a very significant one for the party, as it was at Torquay’s Riviera International Conference Centre that its new leader was to be announced. The conference was to run over 29th and 30th of September, with the leadership contenders at the time 22 | IN&AROUND

Former chancellor and now-Evening Standard editor George Osborne is also set to appear, at a fringe event about devolution and the “northern powerhouse”. The conference will run from 1st to 4th October. Green Party The Greens, co-led by Caroline Lucas and Jonathan Bartley, can look back on a general election this year that brought them very mixed fortunes. While the party lost more than half of its vote compared to 2015, Lucas at least retained her Brighton Pavilion seat. The party’s Autumn Conference will take place from 7th to 10th October at the Harrogate International Centre. Then, there are the also-rans... Although not as relevant to a County Durham audience, there are several other prominent UK parties planning conferences in October, including the Scottish National Party at the SEC Centre in Glasgow from 8th to 10th October, and Plaid Cymru at the Galeri, Caernarfon on 20th and 21st October. Whatever the rest of this year’s party conference season brings, it’s fair to say that we can expect plenty of eyecatching stories, announcements and policy directions with potentially massive implications for the future of the UK.

Chester-le-Street Station: Station Rd, Chester-le-Street, DH3 3EE

Places to go...

WAKEFIELD, West Yorkshire

I usually try to visit the place featured in this series before writing about it. Strictly I have, because I arrived by bus one Saturday lunchtime in 2016 at Wakefield Bus Station and walked across the City to Wakefield Westgate station where I caught the train to Leeds, and then home. Half of the hour that I was in the city was spent in the Virgin Trains First Class Lounge! I also have previously visited the excellent National Coal Mining Museum for England at Overton, some seven miles by bus out of Wakefield, and thus ruled out for this article.

1810, Wakefield Town Hall designed by T.W. Collcutt and opened in 1880, and the Queen Anne style County Hall of 1898 which are Grade I listed. St John’s Church and Square, St John’s North and South Parade are part of residential development dating from the Georgian period. The Cathedral is a 14th century parish church (formerly All Saints) built on the site of earlier Saxon and Norman churches, restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 19th century, and raised to cathedral status in 1888. There is also a well-preserved chantry chapel of St. Mary the Virgin on Wakefield Bridge.

A day in Wakefield by train via Leeds can revolve around the Cathedral and the Hepworth Art Gallery. Wakefield is a city of 77,000 people on the river Calder, on the eastern edge of the Pennines. The railway arrived in 1840 when Kirkgate Station was built, later joined by the Westgate station. Kirkgate has recently been regenerated, but was previously one of the most neglected stations on the national network. The most prominent landmark in Wakefield is the Cathedral, which at 247 feet (75 m) has the tallest spire in Yorkshire. Other landmarks in the Civic Quarter on Wood Street include the Grade II* Neoclassical Crown Court of 32 | IN&AROUND

Hepworth art gallery

Eaglescliffe Station: Station Road, Eaglescliffe, Stockton-on-Tees, TS16 0BT In May 2011 The Hepworth gallery opened on the south bank of the River Calder near Wakefield Bridge, displaying work by local artists Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, and other British and international artists. It is thought to be the largest purpose-built gallery to open in recent times, designed by British architect David Chipperfield and cost £35 million to build. Five weeks after opening it had received 100,000 visitors. The Hepworth Wakefield is a structure composed of ten trapezoidal blocks; its upper-level galleries are lit by natural light from large windows in the pitched roofs. Its windows have views of the river, historic waterfront and the city skyline. The building’s façade is clad with self-compacting pigmented concrete made on site, the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. The architects selected the material to emphasise the gallery’s sculptural appearance. The gallery has ground-floor visitor facilities, including a café bar overlooking the river, a learning studio, a 100-seat auditorium and shop. I understand the building’s brutalist design is not universally popular with local people. But the interior contains works of many wellknown artists - well worth a visit.

Wakefield is known as the capital of the Rhubarb Triangle, ( Wakefield / Morley / Rothwell ), an area notable for growing early forced rhubarb. In July 2005 a sculpture was erected to celebrate this facet of Wakefield, and there is an annual ‘Wakefield Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb” which takes place over the last weekend in February. Which might be an ideal time for my trip back. Enjoy your visit to Wakefield and email me if you get there before I do. Suggestions are also welcomed for other places to be visited in this series. www.wakefieldcathedral.org.uk www.hepworthwakefield.org

The story of St Cuthbert at Chester-le-Street

Many people who are knowledgeable about North East England history are more than familiar with the story of St Cuthbert, the Northumbrian saint who left a fascinating and longenduring legend after his death in 687. However, you might not have realised that for 112 years, St Cuthbert’s body was kept in Chester-le-Street before it received a more permanent home in the nearby city of Durham. The story of how the body reached Chester and why it eventually left has much potential to fascinate.

Cuthbert’s journey from Lindisfarne to Chester-le-Street Cuthbert was born around the year 634 at Dunbar, then part of the Kingdom of Northumbria covering much of what is today northern England and south-east Scotland. In 684, he became the Bishop of Lindisfarne, but resigned from this post by late 686. The contemporary scholar Bede wrote that Cuthbert’s body, when uncovered with the opening of his sarcophagus 11 years following his death, was discovered to have been immaculately preserved. This was deemed a miracle, and so the posthumous cult of Cuthbert grew. Numerous other miracles were

later thought to have been brought by Cuthbert, who became Northern England’s most popular saint. However, in response to a Viking takeover of Lindisfarne’s monastery in 875, the monks fled with Cuthbert’s body and eventually settled with it at Chester-le-Street. To house the saint and his relics, they put together a wooden church and shrine there.

A valuable tomb and a beautiful book That church still stands today as the town’s parish church of St Mary and St Cuthbert, which is now instead made of stone. The treasures brought with Cuthbert’s body included the Lindisfarne Gospels, an illuminated manuscript gospel book produced in Lindisfarne during roughly the early eighth century. At some point between 947 and 968, it was at the church that Aldred, another Bishop of Lindisfarne, translated the Gospels from Latin into English, adding a gloss above the existing text. It was also during the Cuthbert community’s stay here that two kings of England visited. The first, Æthelstan, reached Chester-le-Street by late June or early July and while there, gifted ecclesiastical garments of a stole and maniple to Cuthbert’s

tomb. The king had been on his way to invade Scotland, possibly provoked by a territorial dispute with the Scottish king Constantine II. The English king’s successor, Edmund I, also visited Cuthbert’s community with gifts.

Cuthbert finds a new home in Durham The church had great prestige while it held Cuthbert’s remains. In fact, the local diocese – known sometimes as Lindisfarne and other times as Chester-le-Street’s Latin name, Cuncacestre – had its bishop based at the church, therefore making it a cathedral as well. Nonetheless, Cuthbert’s coffin and the Lindisfarne Gospels were moved from the church in 995; fresh Viking raids prompted the monks to depart. After a short stay at Ripon, the coffin was intended to be returned to Chester; however, according to legend, the saint himself intervened, appearing to one of the monks in a vision. His body was then brought to what would become the city of Durham.

asten your seat belt - for this fabulously ridiculous, rollicking rollercoaster of a film. Top of the list are the wonderful send-ups of stereotypes. You’ll encounter a healthy dose of old-world London charm and contemporary cultural references, plus a generous measure of Southern Comfort thrown into the mix – shaken but not stirred. Oh so unsubtle, but oh so much fun. A mash-up of numerous references to favourite screen moments from Bond to Charade and Fargo also finds its way into this film, but this crazy confection works best when it’s most like the original Man from U.N.C.L.E series – all sharp suits

Taron Egerton striking the right One of the film’s highlights has to balance between everyman and sophisticated spy, with Colin Firth be his rendition of a John Denver at his suave best (if Roger Moore song that is in a class entirely of its own – it’s just a shame that was your favourite Bond, you’ll love this performance) and Pedro the great man isn’t here to hear it. Moreover, for any Doctor Who fan who’s been missing K9, you might find your favourite robotic canine’s replacement here, although not so discerning, incisive or helpful. Overall, the deliberately unsubtle references to sex, drugs and bodily functions and the over-thetop violence won’t be to everyone’s taste; some left me feeling uncomfortable, so in the end, it is a ‘Marmite’ film that will divide opinion. Some might also accuse this film of prioritising style over substance, but there is enormous

An easy-to-overlook gem in County Durham Anker’s House Museum, Chester-le-Street When spending time in Chester-leStreet, you probably haven’t missed the sight of its parish church of St Mary & St Cuthbert. After all, its spire easily stands out among the buildings and greenery of the town. Nonetheless, what could have easily eluded your notice is the Anker’s House Museum – so-called as it was converted from an anchorage attached to the church. Anchorages were cells that, during the medieval period, would each be occupied by a hermit-like monk known as an anchorite. In one of these cells, they would be intensely focused on prayer and withdrawn from the world, making them theoretically a living saint. This anchorage in Chester-leStreet was originally made in the 42 | IN&AROUND

late 14th century and given an additional, external room in the

16th century. It even had two levels before the separating floor was taken out. Six anchorites occupied this anchorage from 1383 until 1547. The Reformation led to the space instead becoming used as an almshouse. In 1986, that space was converted into the Anker’s House Museum – which, perhaps to your lack of

surprise, has been called one of the UK’s smallest museums. The former anchorage itself is among the few remaining intact; it has even been referred to as England’s most complete example of a former anchorage. This undoubtedly helps to make it a great place to learn about the conditions in which an anchorite would reside. The museum is also intriguing to visit if you are interested in gaining more insight into Roman and Anglo-Saxon – not just medieval – life in Chester-le-Street. Items from all of these periods and recovered through archaeology on the site are on display across the museum’s three small rooms.

Plan for Probate helps to ensure your inheritance is given to the people that you wish to receive it. With over 33 years’ experience, we can simplify this process with you at a fraction of the cost most solicitors charge. Peter H Collins Director
