Scores on the doors: food hygiene ratings
Naturally, when you settle down at a table to tuck into succulent-looking food, you want to be confident that this food has been put together hygienically and is safe to eat. You can be confident of this at home, but it’s a very different matter at an eatery... or, perhaps we should say, could be. Thanks to the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme operated by the Food Standards Agency, you can get a good idea of how clean a restaurant or cafe is before you even set foot in it. One major reason why is that UK businesses selling food must be inspected by the food safety officer from the local authority. An even bigger reason is that such businesses (though not quite all such businesses - more on that point later) are each given a food hygiene rating. This rating is out of 5 and can be looked up online, while the business is encouraged to display it at their premises. The ratings, from 1 to 5, are:
5 - Hygiene standards are very good; 4 - Hygiene standards are good; 3 - Hygiene standards are generally satisfactory; 2 - Some improvement is necessary; 1 - Major improvement is necessary; 0 - Urgent improvement is required.
Though the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme covers England, Scotland and Wales, eateries in England are not legally required to display the sticker; they do so voluntarily. For this reason, you should be suspicious if a restaurant or cafe in England does not show its rating on the premises, as this may be a sign that the staff have something to hide. However, keep in mind that businesses in the following two categories are exempt from food hygiene ratings: • Businesses deemed low-risk to public health; these include newsagents, chemist shops or visitor centres selling pre-wrapped goods not requiring refrigeration;
• Childminders and businesses offering caring services at home. Even when you do see a rating, on which specific criteria has the outlet’s hygiene been assessed? All of the following factors are covered:
• • • • •
How food is handled; How food is stored; Preparation of food; Cleanliness of facilities; How food safety is managed.
Keep in mind that the scheme does not assess: • Food quality; • Customer service; • Culinary skill; • Presentation; • Comfort. What if you see that an eatery is rated poorly? There have been a few scare stories about poor hygiene practices even just at North East eateries. Last year, it was reported that Darlington’s China Red restaurant in Gladstone Street was fined in the wake of a food poisoning outbreak, while Star Pizza, off the town’s Victoria Road, also faced a financial penalty for major issues with food hygiene. However, rest assured that businesses handed poor ratings are required to significantly or urgently improve their hygiene standards. The enforcement options at the food safety officer’s disposal help to safeguard the health of the public who eat food supplied or sold at places such as pubs, takeaways, supermarkets and other food shops. www.inandaroundmag.co.uk | 11

CHATHILL FOR ELLINGHAM HALL
M
ost of my visits for this column are to towns and cities, but small rural stations sometimes yield useful places to visit. I was in need of a “writing day” and settled upon Ellingham Hall in north Northumberland for a day out, using the small station at Chathill only 1.5 miles away, and less if I had walked across the fields on 13th November (in the dark) which I did not! Ellingham Hall is an exclusive wedding venue inland from Seahouses, with 18 well-appointed bedrooms and five rooms inside the Hall for weddings and corporate events, the largest accommodating 140 seated delegates. I arranged to go on a quiet day between weddings, and had use of the mezzanine floor in the former chapel, which had a good wifi signal and pleasant views. The dining room and drawing room, as well as the entrance hall can be used for events. Unsurprisingly, most people come by car. They advertise rail access to Morpeth 28.5 miles away and Berwick 23 miles away, but Alnmouth is better for long-distance trains, and Chathill even closer but this only has one train (the “Chathill Flyer”) from Newcastle and back – more heavily loaded - in the morning peak, and one return trip in the evening. The day did not start off too well. There was a serious incident at Killingworth and the 0555 from Newcastle was cancelled. I was put into a taxi which took me all the way to Ellingham so I still arrived on time. My local taxi firm estimated the fare at £80, whilst I had paid £18.30 (without railcard) for the return ticket. A muchneeded cup of coffee, then an orientation tour of the building and its extensive facilities. Later I saw some of the seven spacious selfcatering stone cottages. I had three hours solid work time until I set off to explore the village and have a seafood salad lunch in the

excellent Pack Horse pub. Since I was the only guest in the Hall, the kitchen was not unreasonably closed for the day. I had free access to the whole building including the games room in the cellar but took a walk to visit St. Maurice’s church close by. The unlocked Anglican church features a fascinating stainedglass window featuring the four major building projects of the age which were, in order, the Ark in 2248 BC, the Temple at Jerusalem in 1012 BC, the building of Durham Cathedral in 1093 AD and the rebuilding of Ellingham Church in 1862! I think Archbishop Ussher’s chronology, which dated the start of creation to the 22nd October 4004 BC at 6pm, was still in use in nineteenth century Ellingham. The churchyard, pictured, was interesting but I never found the way to St. Maurice’s Well, and returned to the Hall an hour after lunch for some more work. By six o’clock I was ready to return home, although the staff were concerned for my welfare walking on dark roads back to the station with my little torch. I allowed an hour to get to Chathill but that was ample, and a young woman picked me up on the road, as they do in rural Northumberland, and gave me a lift to the station and its informative little waiting room. The 1915 return train was on time, comfortable and almost empty, and arrived in Newcastle at 2016 with only one other passenger. It may not have been the easiest way to get to Ellingham, but it made for a memorable day. Thanks to Anthony Hunter (GM) and his team for their hospitality. A “Rumbly Tumbly” January: National Winnie the Pooh Day Feeling slightly bloated after an indulgent December? On the 18th January, you can relax a little as we celebrate the renowned, honey-loving creation of author A. A. Milne. First published in 1926, the Winnie the Pooh books were brought to life by Disney in the 1960s and, to this day, are cherished by children and families all over the world.
About the author Alan Alexander Milne was born on 18th January (yes, Winnie the Pooh Day) in 1882. A playwright of whimsy and wonder, he published 18 plays and 3 novels before his son, Christopher Robin Milne, was born in 1920. Before Pooh was published, the character - here called “Teddy Bear” - featured in a 1924 poem written for Punch magazine. On Christmas Eve the following year, “Pooh” appeared by name in a story called “The Wrong Sort of Bees” published in London newspaper The Evening News. Milne later adapted Kenneth Grahame’s novel, The Wind in the Willows, for the stage and wrote poetry and other plays up until his death, aged 74, in 1956.
Inspired by nature Young Christopher Robin Milne adored his favourite teddy bear, Edward, but renamed him “Winnie”, after a Canadian black bear at London Zoo, who had previously been a World War I military mascot. The boy also named a swan “Pooh”, and gave his other favourite toys the now famous titles of Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo and, of course, Tigger. The Hundred Acre Wood, where Milne’s stories took place, was in fact based on Five Hundred Acre Wood, in Ashdown Forest, East Sussex. The illustrator of the series, E. H. Shepard, drew on 36 | IN&AROUND
the landscapes of Ashdown Forest in his work and went on to create artwork for the books Winnie the Pooh (1926), The House at Pooh Corner (1928) and the collection of poetry featuring Winnie The Pooh, Now We Are Six (1927).
Brought to life, stage and screen Between 1966 and 1983, Disney released a series of theatrical short films starring Winnie The Pooh and Milne’s other lovable creature creations. Three of these shorts were released in 1977 as The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh – but, since 2000, Disney has created a further 5 cinematic, feature-length releases. Pooh has also been well-received on stage and transferred naturally to dramatised radio broadcasts and modern audiobooks. The story of Milne creating his characters was explored in the 2017 film Goodbye Christopher Robin.
A legacy of creativity and love “Sometimes, the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.” This and other simple, relatable messages are what have made Milne’s work loved for so long and why we celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day every January. Pooh reacts to difficulties with a casual: “Oh, bother.” He is proud of his “rumbly tumbly” paunch, and he cherishes friendship above all else: “If you live to be a hundred, I hope I live to be a hundred minus one day, so that I never have to live without you.” In only 8 more years, Winnie the Pooh and his friends will have lived, and been loved, for an entire century.

CREED II
It would not be understating matters to suggest that Creed II brings with it a weight of expectation that did not apply to 2015’s Creed. After all, the former - directed and co-written by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan as Adonis “Donnie” Johnson, the illegitimate son of the late former heavyweight champion Apollo Creed - revitalised a previously largely moribund Rocky franchise. A signifier of Creed’s audaciousness was that it was the first instalment in the series not to feature any writing or co-writing contribution by Sylvester Stallone, Rocky Balboa himself. But if there’s one thing that the Hollywood and boxing worlds certainly have in common other than relentless white-knuckle drama, it’s that they are characterised by not always predictable comings and goings. Sure enough, with Coogler having had his hands full lately with a little-heard-of movie called Black Panther - from which you’ll also recognise Jordan - he merely features as executive producer on Creed II. It’s Steven Caple Jr. who therefore takes up the directorial reins, while Stallone is back on writing duties, composing the screenplay alongside Juel Taylor, at the same time as reprising his Creed role as Adonis’ trainer who has long ceased sparring in the ring himself. A respectful - and respectable - follow-up It doesn’t take Creed II long to sketch out the emotive and multi-layered back-story - indeed, the opening credits have barely finished rolling when Adonis is shown rising to the status of world heavyweight champion. He doesn’t get to revel in his triumph for long, though, before he is forced to confront an especially distracting beast from the east: Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu). 40 | IN&AROUND
While Viktor certainly represents a formidable opponent in the sense of being “big, fast, strong, unorthodox”, Adonis is thrown into rather greater turmoil by the obvious opportunity to avenge the death of his father in the ring at the hands of the Ukrainian fighter’s father, Ivan (Dolph Lundgren), as shown in 1985’s Rocky IV. Adding to the already fraught subtext is Rocky’s persistent guilt at not having thrown in the towel on the day that saw Apollo literally pummelled to death. Perhaps unsurprisingly, then, he is no fan of Adonis’ obvious determination to take up Ivan and Viktor’s offer of an immensely anticipated bout. Nor is such melodrama restricted to Adonis’ and Rocky’s floundering partnership, as the former also attempts to persuade his beloved Bianca (Tessa Thompson) to marry him. The pair even soon have a baby on the way, as is quickly sensed by Apollo’s widow and Adonis’ stepmother Mary Anne Creed, in an impressive showing from Phylicia Rashad. One man’s fight for a ‘legacy’ As a seedy promoter tells Adonis in selling him the chance to take on Viktor: “The belt ain’t enough. You need a narrative.” Certainly, it’s hard for Adonis to escape the potential narrative power of clobbering the son of the man who ended his dad’s life. While the denouement of Adonis’ final battle with his intimidating challenger is predictable enough - especially for enthusiasts of past Rocky epics - Creed II offers more than enough generational intrigue, chemistry between its stars and good old-fashioned heart-inmouth pugilism to see most Gavin Lenaghan cinema-goers head home happy. Black Coffee by Agatha Christie People’s Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne If you’re a big Agatha Christie fan, you can rejoice that amateur theatre company, the People’s Theatre, will be bringing her 1930 play Black Coffee back to the stage in Newcastle from 7:30pm on 15th January. Hercule Poirot is the star here; he and his sidekick Hastings are tasked with tackling a murder mystery - but - “who did it?” As Poirot investigates, you can guess along as a series of shifty suspects come into the spotlight.
Dirty Dusting PLAYHOUSE Whitley Bay In this theatrical production, scripted by North East playwrights Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood, three cleaning ladies recover from their disappointment about potential redundancy when they decide to set up... a telephone sex line. Hey, their age and experience won’t be an issue on the phone, so they think - they just have to prevent their boss finding out about their “project”. This heartwarming comedy will be staged from 7:30pm on 24th January.
Castle Players: When we are Married The Witham, Barnard Castle In this Castle Players production of the J. B. Priestley play When we are Married, first brought to a theatrical stage in 1938, we are taken to 5th September 1908. The Helliwells, Parkers and Soppitts gather to mark their silver wedding anniversaries, having all married twentyfive years ago to the day. However, chaos soon ensues, as you will be able to see for yourself in this performance set to start at 7:30pm on 12th January.
Behind the Seams Preston Park Museum, Eaglescliffe If you are a big film and TV buff, you might have clapped eyes on several fancy pieces of attire that, since 22nd December, have been on show at Preston Park Museum. The Behind the Scenes exhibition, which will run until Sunday 3rd March, includes more than 25 original and replica costumes made for top-drawer Hollywood and TV productions - including Game of Thrones, The Crown, Downton Abbey, Poldark and Titanic.
