153 years since the birth of Beatrix Potter On 28th July falls the 153rd birthday of Beatrix Potter. Although she became renowned during her lifetime as a natural scientist and conservationist, she is best known for her prolific writing and illustrating, as seen with her children’s books including The Tale of Peter Rabbit. That particular tale, published in October 1902, started a trend of Potter writing about anthropomorphic animals like rabbits in blue jackets and hedgehogs in pinafores. Adaptations like last year’s film Peter Rabbit have helped to keep her work in the limelight. Not that Potter herself was always basking in it, happily or otherwise. Her Victorian childhood was lonely, and her parents wanted her to stay as their home-bound companion. Nonetheless, she became engaged twice: once to Norman Warne, a publisher who died just a month into the engagement, and later to William Heelis, a country solicitor.
10 | IN&AROUND
She spent holidays in the Lake District and rejoiced in seeing its abundant natural scenery, to such an extent that she carefully painted fungi in watercolours and consequently earned a strong reputation in the field of mycology. Seven of Potter’s books, including The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin and The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, had been published by 1905, the year she bought Hill Top Farm in the Lake District village of Near Sawrey. The following decades saw her purchase further farms to preserve the local landscape. These conservation efforts helped in the preservation of what is now the Lake District National Park. She also helped with the establishment of the National Trust, the conservation charity to which she left nearly all of her property upon her death on 22nd December 1943. With a new musical feature film set to combine live action with animation called Beatrix Potter’s The Tales of Peter Rabbit and Friends now on the way, it’s clear that Beatrix Potter’s light in popular culture continues to shine brightly.

Places to go... CHANGING PLACES TOILETS I have been writing this column in various magazines since 2003, with over 170 destinations to date. But this month I am taking a step back and looking at Places to Go in a different way: for those who need to go to the toilet and for whom there is little or no provision. This is for severely disabled people, adults as well as children, whose needs cannot be met by conventional accessible toilets, such as are generally found on trains today. For profoundly disabled people, transferring from a wheelchair to a toilet seat using grab rails is not enough. These people need additional help, and usually find that they have to have their nappies changed on the floor of a public lavatory, which is not only undignified but also positively unhygienic. What is required is a proper hoist to move someone out of a wheelchair on to a bed, on to a toilet, and to a washbasin, with open space to accommodate someone who is assisting too. This type of toilet is known as a “Changing Places” toilet, and at the time of writing there were only 1,308 in the whole United Kingdom. The Changing Places campaign was officially launched in July 2006. In celebration, the consortium of charities which developed the concept decided to make July 19th an annual awareness day for the campaign. This year it falls on Friday. Changing Places Awareness Day is all about celebrating all that the campaign has achieved to date thanks to the dedicated support of campaigners from charities such as Muscular Dystrophy and MENCAP. It also involves visitor attractions, leisure centres, motorway service stations, community centres, theme parks and museums. It is also an opportunity to help raise more vital awareness of the life changing difference Changing Places toilets make to people’s lives - not just in the UK but around the world! The only railway station with a Changing Places toilet that I am aware of is at York on the East Coast Main Line and managed by LNER. Owing to the required size of the toilet, which is 12 square metres, it is not possible to accommodate one on the train itself, but many passengers use it at the start or finish of their journeys, some even break a long journey to use it, and to LNER’s credit the facility is open for 24 hours so that even people who are not travelling by train can make use of it, even through the night. York as a city is well provisioned, with seven in the area, including

McArthurGlen Designer Outlet. Durham has two at Freemen’s Quay Leisure Centre and the University on South Road. Just out of interest – if you have the luxury of nobody being severely disabled in your family - think about when you last went out by car or train and see if there would have been a facility on your trip. To check where Changing Places toilets are, use
uktoiletmap.org.
I had my eyes opened to this subject at a seminar arranged by the Changing Places charity with a manufacturer named iHus, based at Bircotes near Doncaster. The other major provider is aveso from Andoversford near Cheltenham. For many families with a single disabled child, the whole decision about where the family can go for a day out is determined by where the Changing Places toilets are. Therefore, many theme parks and attractions have installed them to encourage visitors. Even many motorway service stations are building them, and some day more railway stations too.

Is your roof holding up well this summer? Here’s why you should check Ah, the great British summer – the perfect time to sunbathe in the garden, enjoy a riveting book in the shade of your patio awning, and... check your roof, as it happens. You see, it’s precisely because you may be so busy doing all of the above during the sunnier and warmer months, that you might overlook the importance of making sure your roof is still in good shape. After all, if you do encounter any issues, the summer is often the best time to get them dealt with. Yes, it may be hot right now, but it is this – followed by the cooler nights – that can be to blame for excess moisture building up in a poorly ventilated loft, which could cause your rafters to rot. Moss growth can also be a problem for some roofs during the summer, while the heightened ultraviolet (UV) radiation that your roof absorbs at this time of year could bring the risk of roof shingles sustaining sun damage as they dry out, maybe even leading them to crack and fall off.
20 | IN&AROUND
Oh, and it’s not as if wind and rain suddenly cease to exist in the summer, either. Our weather here in the UK can be notoriously unpredictable, and it’s these swift changes that could also further loosen any already-unsecure tiles. So why wait until winter, when it’s much tougher to effectively check your roof, to ensure your home is protected from the weather? Would you like the peace of mind of knowing that your roof has been thoroughly checked this summer? If so, Findley Roofing & Building can do this for you completely free of charge. Simply call us now on 0191 417 3422, or visit our website at www.findleyroofing.co.uk for more details. Finally, if you see any of our distinctive Findley vehicles while out and about in the North East, why not take a snap and send it across to us via a private message for the chance to WIN our #FindFindley game? We complete all manner of fascinating projects around the region every week, so you may not have to look very far to spot us!

Help from HQ.
Your questions, our solutions.
In the last month, the question that you’ve asked us most frequently is: “How can I improve my website?” Admittedly, this can seem like a difficult task without resorting to extra design, development and expenditure on your part. However, there are several simple things you can do to help your website to get found and retain customers: • Make sure there are clear ‘calls to action’ on your landing pages (Google looks for them) – your site should clearly show who you are and what you do
• It needs to load quickly (Google won’t like it otherwise!), so must be hosted by a reliable provider
• Your website should be regularly updated with relevant new content (Google wants it)
• It should be optimised for mobile and tablet devices (more than 60% of web users demand it!)
These are all things that any website administrator can do. But if you need a little assistance, our door is always open from 9 to 5, Monday to Friday.

A brief history of Chester-le-Street
Even if you have never paid it a proper visit, you will have passed through the County Durham town of Chester-le-Street if you have made direct rail journeys between Durham and Newcastle. That’s because the town lies on the East Coast Main Line – and if you haven’t yet taken a closer look at Chester, you will be overlooking a stunning array of historical sights. Chester’s Roman origins remain in its name Of course, although Chester-le-Street is often dubbed simply “Chester” by its residents, following suit elsewhere in the country could easily confuse, as many English towns have been given this name. That’s a sign of how deeply the Romans entrenched their culture around England during their occupation of the country, and Chester-le-Street itself certainly didn’t escape this influence. The name originates in the establishment of a Roman fort known as Concangis or Concagium, a Latinisation of an earlier Celtic name. The Roman name later inspired Old English variants, including Conceastre, which combines the Roman name’s first two syllables with the Old English word “ceaster”, meaning “Roman fortification”. Over time, this name became “Chester” – and problematically so, given how commonly it was already used for other towns. Therefore, “Street” – referring to the Roman road – was added in the Middle Ages, with the town known as “Chester upon Street” by the 18th century. Although it is unclear exactly when it happened, this name was later shortened to “Chester-le-Street”, as we know it today. However, even today, Chester’s Roman 26 | IN&AROUND
heritage can still be literally seen in the form of an auxiliary castra’s ruins officially marketed today as Chester-le-Street Roman Fort. What other historical remnants still abound in Chester? In photos of the town, it isn’t too difficult to spot the spire of the parish church of St Mary and St Cuthbert. A centre of worship has stood on its site for over 1,100 years, and even parts of the current building date back almost a millennium. The church was first built – albeit in wood rather than the current stone, presumably as it was only intended to be a temporary structure – in 883 by a group of monks. They sought to build a shrine to St Cuthbert, having taken his body with them on a journey from the island of Lindisfarne.
PLEASE MENTION IN&AROUND WHEN CONTACTING ADVERTISERS
As this church was the Bishop of Lindisfarne’s seat, it was also a cathedral, giving it prestige across much of the northeast. The monks had also taken the Lindisfarne Gospels with them on their trip, and the book was translated into English at the church between 947 and 968. Although the monks left the church for a more permanent base in Durham in 995, the church was rebuilt in stone in 1054 and remained somewhat wealthy and influential. Chester’s growth was spurred by the coal industry from the late 17th century onwards, with coal often dug in areas around the rivers to allow it to be transported by sea to other areas of the country. Chester flourished as a hub of coal-related communication and commerce, and local businesses including inns and shops benefitted from the influx of miners as the mines grew. Another eye-catching structure still standing in Chester is Chester Burn Viaduct, which towers over large parts of the town as it facilitates rail carriage journeys. The finishing touches were put to this viaduct in 1868, and the structure is now Grade II listed, with 11 arches.
What modern amenities does Chester have? Although large parts of Chester-le-Street’s lengthy history have been physically preserved, various modern developments also help to make the town feel like an endearing mix of old and new. For example, the Riverside Ground continues to host Durham County Cricket Club matches to the backdrop of the 14th-century Lumley Castle, while the town’s marketplace is currently being revamped to enable it to relieve the severity of the flooding that has blighted the area on many occasions. With the town just seven miles from both Durham city and Newcastle, as well as eight miles west of Sunderland, it won’t be hard for you to drop by Chester-le-Street to see what you’ve been missing.

FILM REVIEW: Men Men In In Black: Black: International International
40 | IN&AROUND
PLEASE MENTION IN&AROUND WHEN CONTACTING ADVERTISERS
The core problem with Men in Black: International is its liberal borrowing from other films, leaving it with depressingly little distinct personality of its own.
Fourth instalments don’t usually fare well in Hollywood, even if the recently released Toy Story 4 has admirably bucked that particular trend. Three films, it seems, allows for a nice, round character arc – and, judging from the absences of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black: International, its makers apparently agreed. Strangely, though, they didn’t agree enough to decide against making a fourth Men in Black film at all – which, frankly, probably would have been the better option. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson have slipped into the black suits for the starring roles (as Agent H and Agent M respectively) this time round. However, despite acquitting themselves well in glamorous settings including London, Naples and Marrakesh, their efforts are ill-served by a laden script. You’ll probably want to snore through the exposition-heavy dialogue, so let’s just simplify it by saying that the MIB find evidence of a mole in the organisation but struggle to suss out who it is. The core problem with Men in Black: International is its liberal borrowing from other films, leaving it with depressingly little distinct personality of its own. Even the alien aspect feels playeddown; replace many of the extraterrestrial characters here with humans, and the script wouldn’t need hugely readjusting. The whole thing feels like the cinematic equivalent of “original”-flavour crisps: there’s nothing technically wrong with it, it’s just very bland. This is also the first Men in Black film not directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, as F. Gary Gray has taken over the reins. Unsurprisingly with Fast & Furious 8 on his CV, he’s solid – if largely uninspiring – with the action scenes here, including a frenetic cycle chase through Marrakesh.
Along the way, pint-sized alien “Pawny”, chirpily-voiced by Kumail Nanjiani and serving as a very loyal “pawn” to his adopted “queen”, Agent M, recaptures some of the series’ trademark humour. However, when his funniest moment is grimacing “Is this The Notebook 2?” in response to overhearing a tenderly romantic conversation, you know you haven’t exactly got a comedy classic on your hands. Elsewhere, Emma Thompson makes a welcome return to her role as Agent O from the third film, even if her presence might often remind audiences how much better that film was; its heartwarming ending, in particular, was the kind of classy touch sorely lacking in Men in Black: International. Rafe Spall’s Agent C, meanwhile, spars with Hemsworth’s character well, acting as something of a workplace rival to him. Unfortunately, though, the repeated borrowing of plot elements reaches ridiculous levels at times, right down to the“Chekhov’s gun” that you’ll probably identify well ahead of time (it literally turns out to be a gun). It’s really not until the visually spectacular, action-packed finale that we start seeing the kind of unpredictable plotting capable of justifying a sans-Smith Men in Black film – but, by that time, it feels like a case of too little, too late. It’s less the Men in Black, more the Men (and Women) in Bland.

Durham’s youngest ever mayor assumes office The traditional mayor making ceremony took place at Durham Town Hall, with outgoing mayor councillor John Lethbridge in attendance. In accordance with tradition, Cllr Corrigan then handed out silver coins to people in Durham Market Place. Also present at the ceremony were members of the Cheesy Waffles Project, the Belmontbased charity that works with children and adults with learning disabilities, and which Cllr Corrigan has chosen to support during the year she will serve as mayor. A former deputy mayor, mayor’s consort... and now mayor Cllr Corrigan rises to the position of mayor having acted previously as both deputy mayor and the mayor’s consort. She is a former pupil of St Leonard’s RC Comprehensive School in Durham, and holds a politics degree from the University of Sunderland.
June saw the youngest ever Durham mayor sworn in, during a ceremony that harks back to centuries of tradition. Councillor Katie Corrigan, who became Durham County Council’s youngest ever chairman in May, has now also assumed the mantle of the 417th Mayor of Durham. The 27-year-old is a member of Belmont Parish Council, in addition to representing the Belmont ward on the county council since 2013. A ceremony steeped in tradition The installation of Cllr Corrigan as mayor made her one of fewer than a dozen women to have held the position since its establishment in 1602, as well as the youngest person ever to receive the chains of office.

Councillor for Trimdon and Thornley, Lucy Hovvels, will be this year’s deputy mayor. Also ever-present at Durham’s mayor making ceremonies are members of the mayoral bodyguard, a body with a history stretching back to the 13th century. Four members were presented with awards for long service. They included mace bearer David Baker and Billy Gray, who were both given awards for 25 years of service. Meanwhile, Stan Lincoln was formally recognised for 15 years’ service, and Tom Dixon received an award for five years of service. The Mayor of Durham is the only mayor outside the City of London to have a bodyguard of this kind, with the 15-strong group of volunteers priding itself on having never failed to respond to the mayor’s call to duty.

Durham Cathedral’s main tower reopens after a three-year restoration project With the tragic Notre-Dame fire still fresh in the memory, it’s reassuring that our own region’s most beautiful cathedral, Durham Cathedral, is not only free of fire damage but also in its best condition for years, with the central tower having finally lost its white shroud after a three-year conservation programme. You might recall many occasions when you have passed Durham on the train and caught the breathtaking view of the cathedral, only to be distracted by... well, what looked like a giant white bandage wrapped over the top of the main tower. It’s comforting, then, that the tower has not only recovered from its “wounds”, but also reopened to the public. If you’ve got the stamina, you can now climb the stairs to enjoy a close-up look at the stonemasonry provided by the cathedral’s in-house team and specialist contractors. The repair work has been carried out largely due to heavy weathering and erosion of the sandstone on the upper deck and at bell chamber level. This damage, partly a result of Victorian conservation techniques, was discovered during a routine inspection. The new, hand-carved “blaxter” sandstone fitted to the tower came from Dunhouse Quarry near Barnard Castle, and geologically matches sandstone used centuries earlier, although it is lighter in colour. From the cathedral’s visitor desk, you can now buy a ticket allowing you to climb all 325 steps in the central tower. Adult tickets cost £5 each, while child tickets are priced at £2.50 each, but only children aged at least eight are allowed to climb the steps. It is also essential for you to have a reasonable level of fitness and reasonable footwear if you wish to climb the occasionally steep and narrow steps. If you do conquer the steps, you can enjoy stunning views across the city of Durham and marvel at its other historical attractions, including the nearby Durham Castle.

Festival of 50s Beamish Museum
Who among us wouldn’t love to make a dashing flying visit to the days of Teddy boys, Pathé News and petticoats – the incomparable ‘50s? Well, Beamish Museum obviously thinks the same, given that from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th July, it’s hosting a festival dedicated to the era that gives visitors the perfect excuse to dig out their period finery. Admission to this daytime event is included in the regular museum entry charge, and it’s free for Unlimited Pass holders; visit www.beamish.org.uk for the latest information.
Grease Sunderland Empire
It’s easy to think that we already know the story of the world’s best-loved musical, with leather-clad greaser Danny and girl-next-door Sandy finding themselves unexpectedly reunited after a whirlwind summer romance. But this brand-new production – directed by Nikolai Foster – brings a fresh energy, vitality and passion to the familiar classic, aided by Arlene Phillips’ choreography and guest artist Peter Andre’s appearance as Teen Angel. Purchase your tickets from £13 at www.atgtickets.com for this 30th July to 3rd August run.
Summer Tyne Americana Festival 2019 Sage Gateshead
You’ll find few better celebrations of all things Americana than this immensely popular festival on the banks of the River Tyne from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st July. This year’s line-up is frankly stellar, headlined on the Friday night by k.d. Lang, who will perform as part of her 25th anniversary tour – a show for which ticket availability is expected to be limited. On Sunday, meanwhile, Hollywood movie star and musician Kiefer Sutherland will take to the stage to perform hits from his debut album. Full details of the weekend’s highlights can be found at www.sagegateshead.com, where you can also book tickets. 54 | IN&AROUND
