to the October issue of IN&AROUND!
When it comes to growing your business, promotion is everything. At IN&AROUND Magazine, we offer a range of advertising packages that put your brand in front of thousands of potential customers.
It would be easy to think that this month is just about Halloween, but that’s far from the case in County Durham in 2019. You can see that for yourself when you flick through to our ‘What’s on’ section on page 50 – but what else should you be getting excited about this month?
Our free magazine is delivered to over 20,000 homes and businesses across Chester-leStreet, Derwentside and Durham every month – and our readership continues to grow. With solutions to suit all budgets and requirements, from quarter pages to front page ads, we can help you make an impact. What’s more, with every order, we offer a complimentary design service to ensure that your messages are delivered in the most attractive and eyecatching manner possible.
Well for one thing, if you haven’t done so yet, we suggest you re-familiarise yourself with the lives of the aristocratic Crawleys as they make their erm, stately big-screen debut. Yep; the film adaptation of Downton Abbey is finally here, and our own Craig Lenaghan has delivered his verdict on page 32. If you do fancy doing something scary, though, why not enjoy a spooky time at Chester-le-Street police station? The 31st October event there will enable your little ones to meet the local police team and even have their photo taken in fancy dress inside a police vehicle! Simply head to page 38 for more information.
Whether you’re launching a new product, running a promotion or would like to find out more about how IN&AROUND can work for you, call us on

Give peace a chance: John Lennon’s 79th birthday This year, 9th October would have marked the 79th birthday of the legendary singer-songwriter and peace activist John Lennon, who gained worldwide fame with the Beatles in the 1960s before becoming engaged in political and peace activism in the 1970s. Lennon’s assassination in New York in 1980 remains one of the most shocking moments in music history.
Emerging as a high-profile activist
Rising to fame with the Beatles
Lennon first met the multimedia artist Yoko Ono when attending an exhibition of hers in London in 1966. The pair wed in Gibraltar in 1969, the same year that Lennon returned his MBE largely in protest against Britain’s support of America’s pursuit of the Vietnam War.
Lennon was born John Winston Lennon in Liverpool in 1980. From 1952 to 1957, he attended the city’s Quarry Bank High School, now Calderstones School; the school’s name inspired that of the Quarrymen, a skiffle group which Lennon founded as a 15-year-old in September 1956. At the band’s second performance, Lennon first met Paul McCartney, who he then asked to join the group. McCartney’s friend George Harrison later joined as the lead guitarist, before Ringo Starr became the drummer of the band, by then called the Beatles, in 1962. Later that year, the Beatles released their first single, “Love Me Do”, ushering in a lengthy period of success largely resulting from Lennon’s remarkably productive songwriting partnership with McCartney. This remains the most successful partnership of its type in music history.
Lennon’s anti-war credentials emerged during his time in the Beatles, as evidenced by his role in the 1967 black comedy film How I Won the War and that year’s release of the pacifist song “All You Need Is Love”, which Lennon penned for the Beatles.
Solo career and death After the Beatles broke up in 1970, Lennon scored a series of successes as a solo artist. These included the now-iconic songs “Imagine” and “Give Peace a Chance”, while Ono was Lennon’s co-writer on “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”. Though the couple relocated to New York in 1971, the Nixon administration soon attempted ultimately unsuccessfully - to deport him due to his anti-war activities. It was in New York City that, in the archway of apartment building the Dakota, Lennon was fatally shot by fan Mark David Chapman. Though Lennon was rushed to hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival, leading to a huge outpouring of grief across the world.

Better quality of life with cancer. Did you know your local NHS has a Charity? The County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust Charity is 30 years old but has only become proactive in the last two years. We are here to help enhance patient care and wellbeing through the provision of medical equipment, products, services and education that would not be available through the NHS budgets. The Trust has around two million patient visits every year across our hospitals and community services. Last year, the Charity supported the MRI Scanner Appeal for Darlington Memorial and Bishop Auckland Hospitals and this year our big focus is a Chemotherapy Appeal – the challenge to build a centre of excellence for cancer care in Durham.
Every year, over 3000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed in County Durham and Darlington, with increases in cases of prostate, bowel, breast and lung cancers. Together, we can help more people survive cancer and to live a better quality of life with cancer. By supporting our Chemotherapy Appeal, you are helping to deliver a centre of excellence for cancer care, benefitting local people in our communities, to improving the patient experience.

Durham Constabulary to issue tasers to all of its frontline officers Every frontline officer of Durham Constabulary is set to be offered a taser as part of a new scheme to increase protection for both the public and the police. The officers will also be intensively trained on safe use of the devices, which have often been deemed a “last-resort” weapon. Durham Constabulary Chief Constable Jo Farrell explained: “Sadly, there are situations in which police officers need to take immediate action to subdue violent suspects to protect the public.
“Tasers allow us to do so swiftly and safely, without causing lasting injury, and are an extremely effective means of dealing with the many dangerous situations officers find themselves in. “Too often, our officers are subject to assaults in the line of duty, simply for doing their job. We need to make sure that our officers have the tools they need to protect the public and protect themselves”. Police Federation National Chair John Apter had previously called for all officers to be permitted to carry a taser should they want to do so. Meanwhile, numerous assaults on officers had led Northampton Police Chief Constable Nick Adderley to insist that “enough is enough”. He revealed that his force would become Britain’s first to issue tasers as standard. In early August, PC Stuart Outten of the Met Police received stab wounds in a “frenzied” machete attack in Leyton, east London. In mid-August, PC Andrew Harper was killed after reacting to reports of a Berkshire burglary and receiving multiple injuries.
16 | IN&AROUND
Durham Police Federation chairman Andy Jackson declared: “I strongly support the wider roll-out of taser to all frontline officers should they wish to be equipped with it. Taser is an extremely effective means of dealing with the many dangerous situations that officers often face on the streets and is a less lethal option than more conventional firearms.” He added: “In a number of cases where taser is drawn, it is not fired as the deterrent is enough, which helps protect communities as well as protecting officers from assaults.” Durham Constabulary first started issuing tasers in 2005, albeit only to a select few authorised firearms officers, as these weapons were deemed a “less lethal” alternative to more traditional firearms for diffusing situations posing a potential risk to life. A taser works by firing two small barbed darts which are meant to puncture the skin. While attached to the target, these darts deliver a modulated electric current to hinder voluntary control of the suspect’s muscles, resulting in “neuromuscular incapacitation” before this suspect is restrained. Though Durham Constabulary has used X26 tasers for the last 14 years, the next 12 months will see more and more of these models replaced with new, more powerful X2 models. The improvements in the X2 models include the capacity to shoot a second cartridge should the first miss its target.

Business Spotlight.
esme-lauren
How would you sum up Esmé Lauren in a sentence or two?
Is there a ‘typical’ Esmé Lauren customer?
Established in Feb 2019 Esmé Lauren is an online children’s clothing retail store that aims to bring our customers the latest, luxury trends at affordable prices. We offer simplistic, yet bold, capsule collections and wardrobe must-haves.
Families. In the widest sense. From Parents and Guardians, Godparents to Aunties and Uncles or Brothers and Sisters. Our customer base is broad but with one commonality… children.
How would you describe your journey with the business so far? An exciting and extremely rewarding challenge. We have grown so much in such a short space of time and as small family run business we are incredibly proud of this achievement. We’ve hit expected bumps along the way as all new business’ do but we’ve managed to over-come these together, learn and grow. How would you say your backgrounds and previous experiences have helped you in running the business so far? Our two young children are the inspiration for Esmé Lauren, therefore our experiences as parents have been the driving force behind the business. Our goal is to continuously bring the latest fashion trends into an age appropriate children’s collection. This requires extensive research and planning. Our experiences in our professional careers to date combined with our work ethic have enabled us to bring this all together to form a family and customer focused brand. Why should parents purchase their children’s clothing from Esmé Lauren rather than competitors? As an ecommerce store we aim to offer the highest standard of customer service to allow our customers to feel safe and secure when making purchases online. In addition, we offer unique but versatile pieces that compliment every wardrobe and budget. A large proportion of our stock is neutral in style and colour making it the perfect unisex collection. This was important to us as we wanted to offer staple pieces that were able to follow the family ‘hand-me down’ tradition, irrespective of gender. Each item in our collection is hand-picked and designed to offer something for everyone.
20 | IN&AROUND
What concerns do customers of Esmé Lauren particularly often have, and how would you say your business is answering these concerns? We’ve received a lot of feedback requesting a broader range of sizing. We currently offer 0 to 6 years and our customers would like to purchase our items not just for their younger children but for their older children too. As our business grows, we are constantly updating our catalogue with the hope of offering a broader age range in the near future, however in direct response to this feedback we have exclusively designed and will be launching a very special Christmas collection which will be available for Children aged 0 – 10. What do you think the key issues are for fashion-forward children’s clothing, that might not apply to adults’ clothing? Or would you say the main concerns across the two are broadly the same? The key issues we’ve identified and also experienced ourselves as parents, are value for money and durability. Children grow out of clothes so quickly, therefore it was important to us to offer luxury, high quality pieces but at an affordable price. Also, by offering gender neutral options we extend the clothes longevity by allowing them to be shared amongst family members. In addition, there’s often hesitation as parents to buy children luxury items,
due to the fact they’re likely to get dirty or ruined. At Esmé Lauren we aim to offer durable pieces without the hefty price tag. Are there any specific Esmé Lauren products or ranges that you would say you are especially proud of? It has to be our new Christmas range launching this October. A lot of time, effort and thought has gone into this capsule collection to ensure we bring our customers Christmas favourites with a trendy twist. The range will include traditional Christmas PJs and Jumpers but like you’ve never seen before. What is your favourite feedback that you have received in your time running the business so far? We have been overwhelmed with the amount of positive feedback we have received in such a short time and humbled our customers have taken time to support our brand with their reviews. A few of our favourites to date include:
“#Trendsetters” “Children should be empowered at an early age to experiment with their style, Esmé Lauren enables this” “I wouldn’t see that attention to detail in the big high street chains let alone a small business” What are your ambitions for Esmé Lauren in the months and years immediately ahead? To continue to grow a customer focussed business that mirrors our family values and that we continue to be passionate about. Our longterm goal is to eventually support the local economy by expanding and employing staff.

DUNDEE
A
highly enjoyable visit to Dundee could be had without straying more than 100 metres from the newly rebuilt railway station. There is the Royal Research Ship Discovery and the adjacent new Victoria and Albert museum, and visiting both would take up much of a day trip. There are three direct trains a day from the north east to Dundee, operated by LNER, which are trains running up the coast to Aberdeen. Additional journey opportunities are available by changing to Scotrail services at Edinburgh Waverley. The line crosses the silvery River Tay on a bridge rebuilt after the first one collapsed in a storm in 1879, having been built substandard. A train was crossing when the bridge gave way, leading to 75 fatalities. A further 14 men were killed in constructing the much sturdier replacement. No risks were taken with the replacement bridge, which has stood and been maintained since July 1887, but it had a major overhaul in 2003. The V&A, an offshoot of the London gallery, is recently opened in Dundee, a city of jam, jute and journalism, although the jute industry which gave the city its wealth, has died out completely. The new V&A has a special exhibition on video games (charged for) but the rest of it is free and there are impressive Scottish Design

The RRS Discovery was originally moored in London and moved to its port of construction in 1986 after years gradually rotting on the Thames. Dundee was where she was built in 1901, and she is now in a purposebuilt dry dock where the story is told of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration featuring such names as Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton and zoologist Edward Wilson. The twin attraction to the Discovery is the Verdant Works, which tells the story of jute manufacture and has a fully operational 1801 Boulton and Watt beam engine. At its height around 1900 there were 50,000 people working in 100 mills. Look out for cartoon strip Oor Wullie statues around the city. St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral (the Scottish Episcopal church is allied to the Church of England), is a grand Gothic church opened in 1855. Designed by the eminent Victorian architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, it is an oasis of peace in the city centre and on the day of my visit was to host an American choir from Minneapolis singing in the evening at a free concert.
In the 1850s Dundee was growing fast but had its share of poverty and squalor and Bishop Alexander Forbes had a vision of a building which would provide a refuge and inspiration for Dundonians who lived in the city’s crowded tenements. Inside is the memorial to James Chalmers, a local stationery shop owner who invented the adhesive postage stamp. The organ installed in 1865, is maintained by Harrison and Harrison of Durham. This was not Sir George Gilbert Scott’s only work in the city as he designed the museum and art gallery on the north side of the city centre known as The McManus, which opened in 1869. Admission is free, and there is a regular programme of talks and tours, as well as the regular art gallery. If you’re interested in science, the Dundee Science Festival is on 6-21 October, based at the Dundee Science Centre, located in a city packed with scientific and cultural interest.

We catch up with the Labour MP for North Durham, who has represented the constituency in Parliament since 2001 What do you feel have been the most encouraging developments in North Durham since your re-election in 2017? I have been pleased to see the progress which has been made on regenerating the town centres in Chester le Street and Stanley. The County Council and others are working really hard to attract visitors to the towns – new businesses in Stanley like Home Bargains, Aldi and McDonalds are giving the local economy a boost while the marketplace in Chester le Street is being revamped. I have been campaigning hard on train services at Chester le Street, and reliability seems to have improved on the whole – I’m hoping that there will be good news for passengers when the new timetable is published. What do you think are the most pressing issues facing the area that you will be prioritising as an MP during the rest of this Parliament? We need to put pressure on government to reverse the drastic cuts which have been made to education funding. I visit local schools on a regular basis, and they do a great job, but headteachers need resources if they are to give children the start in life they deserve. I am also campaigning hard on benefit changes, which are having an impact on many vulnerable people in the community. One issue I raised was the abolition of the Severe Disability Premium, which has affected many of my constituents – after pressure from MPs, the government have agreed to reverse this policy, but there are many more injustices in the current system which need to be tackled. You have been a vocal opponent of what you have described as the Government’s “slash and burn” policy towards defence spending; what do you feel should be our major defence priorities today? I am a strong supporter of NATO, and in an uncertain world I believe that it is vital that the UK’s financial contribution is maintained. I do accept the need for Defence spending to be strategically deployed, but as a former Veterans Minister I am a passionate advocate for supporting our current and former service men and women. You have also previously spoken about the importance of mental health, including for MPs; how well-developed do you consider mental health provision in North
26 | IN&AROUND
Durham to be as of present, and what do you think could be improved? I think that as a society we have taken great strides towards ending the stigma around mental illness, and speaking about it openly. In my view the priority for policy-makers should be joining up services, and the NHS needs to work far more closely with voluntary and community organisations who offer day to day support to individuals and families. Cosmetic surgery is another subject that you have spoken out about lately; what do you think needs to be changed in this regard in the era of Love Island and similar reality TV shows? I have been campaigning actively in this field alongside my constituent Dawn Knight, who has been fighting hard for greater regulation in the sector. I believe that a full risk assessment, including a mental health element, should be carried out before anyone undergoes treatment and I am also working with Dawn to put pressure on the social media companies who perpetuate the myth of the “perfect body”. Beamish recently opened its ‘50s Welfare Hall as part of its construction of its 1950s Town; what do you think of the development, and what do you think it means for those living in the wider area and beyond? Beamish is a fantastic asset for the area, attracting visitors to North Durham from all over the world, and providing hundreds of jobs for local people. They also do great work with the community, for example by providing memory boxes for old people’s homes. I visit the museum on a regular basis, and am always struck by the way that it brings whole families together, with grandparents sharing their memories of our area’s history with the younger generation. Chester-le-Street’s Market Place is currently undergoing major redevelopment. What do you think the prospects are for this area of the town once the work is complete? I am really excited by this development, as the scheme will not only prevent flooding, but give the whole area a lift. I was pleased to attend the opening of the new-style market at the start of August – the quality of the offerings from the traders brought together by Events 2 Go Go was very high, and I would recommend that local people give it a try on the first Friday and Saturday of each month.

Are there any local issues that you feel have gone largely unnoticed and that you feel we should all be paying greater attention to? Maybe examples of setbacks, breakthroughs or progress that have ‘gone under the radar’? One issue that matters greatly to a number of families in the area is the diagnosis of autism. In 2017 I had to raise with the Prime Minister the scandalous waiting lists, with some families waiting over three years for their child to be seen. This was causing significant problems, as the children were unable to access the appropriate level of educational support, and the prolonged uncertainty placed families under enormous stress. Following my intervention, the local Trust took action to streamline the process and bring the waiting times down. What would you say have been your proudest achievements as an MP since you were first elected to the Commons in 2001? Early on in my time as an MP, in 2004, I was pleased to steer the Christmas Day (Trading) Bill through Parliament. This
law prohibits large shops from opening on Christmas Day, meaning that staff in these businesses are able to enjoy the festivities with their family. It is a great honour to represent this area in Parliament, and over the years I have had the privilege of meeting so many constituents. Often people will come to me at times of difficulty and distress in their lives, and taking up the issues they raise with me can be challenging, but is very rewarding. It’s almost 20 years since the first issue of IN&AROUND; what kind of impact and importance do you think such a long-running print magazine has for the local community? Chester le Street is a great place to live, and still has a strong sense of community. A magazine like In and Around is an ideal forum for people to find out what is going on and to keep up to date on local events. I believe that even in the age of electronic media, many people still like to get their information on paper and hope that the magazine will enjoy many more successful years of publication.

FILM REVIEW:
Downton Abbey There are certain TV series that, however successful and acclaimed they become, never quite feel like they belong on the big screen. Still, that doesn’t always stop filmmakers from trying to put them there – and it’s to Downton Abbey creator and writer Julian Fellowes’ credit that, in adapting the globally popular period drama for cinema, he largely manages to paper over the inevitable cracks as though he’s meticulously applying tastefully-designed wallpaper in a stately home. Much of what you remember and probably loved from the TV version, which bowed out in 2015, is present and correct here: sumptuously elaborate scenery and costumes, a dash of Mills & Boon-y romance and even much of the original cast. Taking place in autumn 1927, less than two years after the events of the series finale, we see Downton’s occupants hurriedly preparing for a visit by King George V (Simon Jones) and Queen Mary (Geraldine James). However, resentments simmer as the servants realise that they will be temporarily replaced by the royals’ own entourage. Not wanting to so easily surrender the privilege of serving royalty, the Downton servants soon hatch a plan to nudge these upstarts out of the picture. Yes, “nudge” – not “push”. It all plays out rather like a single episode of the show stretched to about two hours – but, while this treatment ends up slightly diffusing even some of the tenser moments, there’s something reassuring about seeing so much of what made the original show endearing faithfully brought back. So, we still get the main ensemble of the aristocratic Crawley family, including Robert Crawley, the Earl of Grantham (played by Hugh Bonneville), his wife Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) and their daughters Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael). There’s also Robert’s mother Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham (the legendary Dame Maggie Smith), as ready as ever to rapidly deliver a humorously stinging put-down in response to any rebuke.
If you’re completely new to the whole world of the fictional Yorkshire country estate from which the franchise takes its name, just reading that previous paragraph might have left you feeling a little disorientated. Fortunately, there is a ten-minute YouTube video that sums up the whole backstory… Definitely in the “great to see you back” category is sweetnatured maid Anna Bates (the wonderful Joanne Froggatt), who marshals the other servants with a calm efficiency. Meanwhile, new-to-Downton actors David Haig (as the King’s snooty butler) and Tuppence Middleton (as the young heiress Lucy Smith, who finds herself at the centre of an inheritance tussle) slot into the established cast so effortlessly that they already feel like regulars. With County Durham’s Beamish Museum a welcomingly recognisable backdrop in several scenes as well, you’ve got yourself a big-screen experience that feels historically authentic. For better or worse, this is Downton Abbey very much as you remember it, making for the cinematic equivalent of Werther’s Originals: charmingly traditional, if at risk of feeling a little too safe.

Giving Your Conservatories the Guardian Treatment So, it’s that time of year again. The clocks go back, the skies get a little darker a little earlier, and the temperature drops. However, that shouldn’t really matter while we’re comfortable and cosy inside our homes, should it? What about inside your conservatory? Granted, not everybody considers their conservatory a ‘real’ part of the home, but that’s usually because the temperature inside can wildly fluctuate.
Want to experience for yourself what one of these innovative new roofs could bring to your home? Contact the team here at Findley Roofing & Building. You can find us online at www.findleyroofing.co.uk/ or by calling 0191 417 3422. Finance options are available for new installations, so don’t hesitate to get your conservatory ready for winter.
If you find that your conservatory is uncomfortably cold during winter but unbearably hot in summer, you may wish to consider a new roof for the room. Originally, conservatories were built using pretty standard glass, including on the roof. This essentially means that they don’t retain heat well – meaning that heat from outside gets in and the heating you’ve paid for inside gets out. However, this is where a Guardian Warm Roof can make all the difference, adding incredible insulation properties to your conservatory. Also, from a visual point of view, a Guardian Warm Roof can be installed to look just like the other tiled roofs on your property, thereby enhancing its quality both outside and in. Recently, we’ve seen a great number of North East homeowners look to make the most out of their conservatory by adding a Guardian Warm Roof to the room.

Historic Durham building to be turned into micropub and student flats A historic, Grade II-listed building which has stood in Durham city since the 17th century is set to be converted into a “ground floor drinking establishment” and seven flats. These plans were lodged in June and have since been approved by Durham County Council’s planning authority. The building is located on 34-35 Saddler Street and, at different times in its history, has served as a confectioner, gunmaker, pub and shop space. The building has been altered several times in recent decades and formerly had the name of the Estate House. The new plans have allowed for repairs and improvements, including revamping the shop front, replacing windows and carrying out roof work, intended to enhance the centuries-old building’s appeal. Student facilities are also set to be added across four floors. The works, which will include fitting a new entrance as well as a kitchen-and-dining area to the rear, are aimed at finishing repair projects initiated under previously-granted planning permissions. There will also be an eco-friendly focus with the improvement work, as it will include adding a hibernaculum to the basement, providing habitable space for bat species. The restoration plans have been through a consultation stage during which they were hailed by 48 | IN&AROUND
several local groups, among them the City of Durham Trust. The group’s chairman, John Lowe, emailed the council to enthuse about the developers’ “care and attention to detail”. The proposals have also been welcomed by the City of Durham Parish Council’s planning committee which, in a letter to the County Council, remarked that the site “has long been in need of a viable use before deterioration become(s) irreversible.” The letter added: “The parish council therefore welcomes this comprehensive, well-researched and sensitive proposal to carry out works that will safeguard the property.” The letter continues that the proposal “shows significant commitment to carrying out the conversion, restoration and adaptation works in the necessary appropriate manner, at what will be major additional costs.” Planning documents for this building, which is located in the Durham City Conservation Area, indicate that the project will produce up to four jobs, of which three will be part-time. As planning conditions require the restoration work to commence within three years, it won’t be long before the people of Durham city can start to see the Saddler Street building’s proposed transformation taking shape.
