ISSUE 169 June 2019

READ ONLINE AT: www.inandaroundmag.co.uk

Welcome

to the June issue of IN&AROUND!

We’re at the midway point of the year, thereabouts – but there are no (ahem) halfmeasures in this month’s issue. In-between shopping for Father’s Day presents and stocking up on essentials for those summer music festivals, why not flick through the glossy pages of our free community magazine? If your cultural tastes aren’t quite Glastonbury, you can sip beverages to the backdrop of visual art instead at Outstanding Art. This Durham-based art gallery opened in March – and in an interview on page 40, they tell us about their friendly venue.

Why Advertise? When it comes to growing your business, promotion is everything. At IN&AROUND Magazine, we offer a range of advertising packages that put your brand in front of thousands of potential customers. Our free magazine is delivered to over 20,000 homes and businesses across Chester-leStreet, Derwentside and Durham every month – and our readership continues to grow. With solutions to suit all budgets and requirements, from quarter pages to front page ads, we can help you make an impact. What’s more, with every order, we offer a complimentary design service to ensure that your messages are delivered in the most attractive and eyecatching manner possible.

Many other exciting things are happening locally this month – including the inaugural Seaham Food Festival, as covered in our ‘What’s on’ section on page 60.

Whether you’re launching a new product, running a promotion or would like to find out more about how IN&AROUND can work for you, call us on

George Orwell was born 116 years ago this month – and on page 44, we’ve profiled the famed author of dystopian fiction. Want a lighter tale? Check out The Hustle – our copywriter Gavin Lenaghan has reviewed the con caper on page 50.

In the spotlight.

All of that should be enough to keep you busy until July, when our magazine will be back yet again on your doormat!

HARDWICK HARDWICK LIVe LIVe

FESTIVAL The largest music festival in the North East returns to Hardwick Hall Hotel, Sedgefield, from 17 to 18 August and this year is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. A whole host of top stars will be heading to the region for Hardwick Live Festival, with headline performances from Manic Street Preachers on Saturday and James on Sunday. But that’s not all, with music fans able to enjoy sets from the likes of The Zutons, Lisa Stansfield, Stiff Little Fingers, Ziggy Marley, Sister Sledge featuring Kathy Sledge, Billy Bragg, The Sherlocks, The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Club and many more. And organisers have thrown in something a little different this year, transforming the hotel’s Coachhouse Courtyard into a dance arena with some top DJs making an appearance over the weekend. Saturday will be hosted by world-famous club brand Glitterbox, with Joey Negro, Horse Meat Disco, The Shapeshifters and Melvo Baptiste taking to the decks over the day.

Then Sunday welcomes Retro – a favourite in the Balearic Islands – and DJ sets from Jeremy Healy, Paul Taylor, Brandon Block, John Dasilva, Allister Whitehead and Chris Bungoni. The local DJ line-up is also one to look out for, with Denney, Mark Jenkyns and Elliot Adamson – who have played at clubs around the globe – headlining across the two days. As well as a top musical line-up, there’s lots more to take part in, with comedy, poetry, yoga, celebrity chefs, a fun fair, and a children’s area – and you can make a weekend of it by choosing camping or glamping. And festival-goers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to food, with options including mac and cheese, pizza, hog roast, donuts, gourmet burgers and ice cream. Tickets cost £55 for one day or £99 for both days and concessions are available for children and 13-17-year-olds at www.hardwicklive.co.uk

COMPLETE BUSINESS TRAVEL SOLUTIONS

Hays Travel for Business is part of the UK’s largest independent travel agent, and their clients come from a range of industry sectors up and down the country. They understand that the act of travelling on business can often bring a number of challenges, so it’s imperative that you choose the right kind of travel agent. On the one hand, it can be a fun experience! You’re encouraged to leave your usual work environment and experience new places, meet new people, and embrace opportunities that you may have never had without. It’s worth reiterating that this is ‘travelling on business’ we’re talking about, which is not to be confused with a ‘holiday’. It can be stressful, and sometimes travelling miles and miles can be rather daunting, not to mention expensive. Hays Travel for Business has the necessary knowledge and experience to give advice, and keep your travellers happy and safe. We will equip you with the tools and support to ensure that your trip is a success. First or standard class travel? The quickest route or the cheapest fare? Car hire or taxi? Wrong choices can be costly for your company, and equally, it’s time consuming and frustrating having to consult each time a decision is required. A rigorous company travel policy, which clearly states procedures and objectives, avoids unnecessary expense and bad feeling amongst staff. Its aim is to strike a balance between cost control, flexibility, and traveller convenience.

20 | IN&AROUND

If you don’t have a travel policy in place, or if you do but haven’t reviewed it in years, Hays Travel for Business would be happy to consult with you to ensure you can deliver value and quality to your workforce, without decreasing the amount of travelling that you do. Turner & Townsend is a multinational professional services company who has been using Hays Travel for Business for over two decades. Global IT Director, Hanif Loonat, said: “Travel is key to our organisation as we operate from 108 offices in 45 countries. It is therefore vital that our travel budget is controlled and monitored and Hays Travel for Business have been doing that efficiently for over 20 years.” Hays Travel for Business offer everything you may need for an organised, comfortable, and efficient journey. You have the chance to meet this incredible company at The Mussel Club’s annual business expo, Show Your Mussel 2019. Not only are they exhibiting their business on June 13th, but they’re also partners of the huge event. You can pop by and meet the brains behind the business by securing a free ticket at www.symexpo.com For more information about the UK’s largest independent travel agent, visit their website www.haystravel.co.uk/business-travel. firstmortgage (NE) Celebrating one year in Chester-le-Street

“For us, there’s nothing better than helping clients move into their dream home. You’ll find us conveniently located on Front Street and we welcome any enquiries, so come in and see us or join us at our first birthday celebrations.” First Mortgage NE opened its doors on Front Street one year ago this June, bringing free whole of the market mortgage advice to Chester-le-Street. The branch is home to two friendly Mortgage Advisors and overseen by Branch Manager Georgia. The local community and businesses are invited to celebrate the branches first birthday on Wednesday 3rd July. From 4pm drinks and snacks will be served, so come and join us and meet the team. Mortgage and protection experts, our team is on hand to support everyone from home movers and those looking to remortgage, to first time buyers and landlords. We don’t believe there’s a ‘one size fits all’ approach to mortgages, and will always take the time to understand your personal circumstances to ensure you get the best mortgage deal for you. To make your journey through the mortgage process as stress-free as possible, our advisors will guide you through every step, from completing the paperwork to liaising with surveyors and solicitors so you don’t have to. Our experienced advisors also have access to the best in the market deals on life insurance, critical illness cover, income protection and buildings and contents insurance. Branch Manager Georgia said: “Since opening our doors in Chester-le-Street we’ve helped hundreds of people secure the best mortgage deal for them without having to spend a penny. Our service is completely fee-free, which goes a long way when buying a home which can be an expensive time.”

First Mortgage is the UK’s top rated mortgage broker with branches across the UK and eight locations here in the North East. In addition to Chester-le-Street, branches are in Sunderland, Newcastle and Gateshead, with additional offices in Northumberland, Middlesbrough, Darlington and York where appointments can be arranged. Testimonials My solicitors were absolutely fantastic. They called, texted or emailed updates, and arranged catch up meetings when it suited my busy work schedule. The happy outcome we got and the time and effort my solicitors put in was definitely value for money PN

My solicitor was extremely reliable, trustworthy and provided real value for money. He explained the legal process in layman’s terms and was always willing to answer my questions and ease my concerns. I would never have achieved the outcome I have, in the time frame I did, without my solicitor KS

A closer look at

Framwellgate & Pity Me Just north of the City of Durham and tucked between the A167 and a vast stretch of the A1, Framwellgate Moor and the curiously named Pity Me encapsulate the historic beauty of the region. Both the idyllic civil parish and splendid suburban village were founded on what was once an open stretch of woodland west of the River Wear. Names steeped in history It is believed that the famed Cades Road, used by the Romans, once passed through the area and that the first permanent farms and settlements on the land were built around this time. The name Framwellgate Moor takes its etymology from several periods and occupations; Framwell comes from Old English, for ‘Strong Spring’, and Gate from the Old Norse word for Street. Where Pity Me took its name from, though, is open to much debate. The name could have been bestowed upon the now-beautiful village when it was far more desolate, built on land that was difficult to cultivate. However, there are also Norman connotations (Petit Mere means ‘little sea’), and the suggestion that the name is a corruption of ‘peaty mere’, which means small lake. Another story behind the unusual name is that monks carrying the coffin of St. Cuthbert dropped it close to this spot, and begged for the saint to take pity on them and carry on with their task without worry. Regardless of which tale you choose to believe, by the medieval period, the north eastern landscape was largely agricultural, and all local villages and farms in the area supplied food to Durham City. The ‘moor’ of Framwellgate Moor would have been used to graze cattle by local farmers and traders on the way to market, while locally grown corn would have been ground at the watermill that once existed in the area. It is also believed that monks from the abbey in Durham would regularly pass through the area on the way to nearby Finchale Priory – another notable architectural landmark only several miles from the area. 30 | IN&AROUND

Growth during the Industrial Revolution Later, when the coal mining industry began to prosper, both villages – and many others in the region – went through a long period of development. Four coal mines were built in the area, and although each one is now closed, you can still see remnants of the era in rows of small cottages and ‘pit’ terraces – now modernised to create a network of incredible contemporary homes. But now, Framwellgate Moor and Pity Me are home to thousands of residents and many prosperous local businesses. Framwellgate Moor’s Front Street, which runs from north to south in typically straight Roman-road fashion, is home to the likes of contemporary fashion store Mr Grey, legal experts North East Law, and popular hairdressers Ebony

Salon, providing locals with easy access to a range of commercial services. Within the parish bou ndaries are also a number of practical trade businesses for home and commercial property owners to access, including roofers, electricians and specialist services such as J.E.D. Double Glazing Repairs. On the outskirts of Pity Me is the popular Arnison shopping centre, and within the boundaries of both villages are a variety of restaurants, pubs, guest houses and hotels. Modern villages suitable for all Possibly the most notable modern building in the area is the campus of New College Durham, located between Front Street and the A167. With a range of further and higher education courses available to people of all ages, the college can trace its roots back almost 100 years,

when Neville’s Cross College was opened. This specialist teacher training college merged with Durham Technical College, which focused on the mining industry, in 1977, and now offers a wide range of academic and practical areas of study. Not far south of the college is the University Hospital of North Durham, which serves a wide population of 250,000 people across County Durham, and puts everybody who lives in the smaller villages nearby within easy access of essential services. And with both Framwellgate Moor and Pity Me within touching distance of Durham City, and easily accessible by road, you’re never far from seeing a little piece of history when you visit these fantastic North East locations. www.inandaroundmag.co.uk | 31

Business Spotlight.

What inspired you to create Outstanding Art? As a local boy from Durham, it was something of a dream for Ian to set up his own art gallery. Having studied Fine Art and Curating at Chelsea and Central Saint Martins, Ian went on to work for various prestigious institutions in London such as Sotheby’s and Tate Britain. He was then inspired to bring a slice of a London style space to Durham City. How would you sum up the philosophy of Outstanding Art? We simply aim to create a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere, whereby there is something for most people to enjoy. Whether you prefer to visit just to view the art, grab a cocktail with friends or join us for a livelier event night, we aim to make contemporary art more accessible to the public whilst supporting practising artists. The gallery opened in March; how has your experience of running the business been so far? So far we are just setting up our events programme to enhance the experience of the space as a Art Gallery and Bar, attempting to merge the two ideas together to create another option for people to enjoy a drink and entertainment. Are there any particular artistic styles, mediums or subjects that the gallery is especially interested in? We don’t have any preference towards any medium or subject and we are always looking for new talent and welcome artists to approach the gallery with their work. What sort of support do you provide to aspiring artists and the wider art community? Having had local artists approach us directly we are pleased to be hosting pop up exhibitions alongside our regular schedule in order to showcase their works in a gallery space. Our first exhibition took place on May 31st, featuring work by Jenny Schade who currently works from her studio in TESTT SPACE. How would you describe the gallery’s relationship with the Durham area? The gallery is something totally new to Durham and we hope people are excited to receive our fresh approach to entertainment. 40 | IN&AROUND

What upcoming exhibitions or events do you have coming up at the gallery that we should be especially excited about? We recently exhibited Allison Harrell’s solo show ‘In The Light’ which arrived from New York just a few weeks ago! We also have an ‘Ink ‘N’ Drink’ evening, marrying art and alcohol in a fun workshop on June 3rd, a comedy evening from Hilarity Bites June 6th – and live music most weekends! What can you tell us about the bar offerings? The bar has an exclusive range of wines and champagnes as well as some classic and craft cocktails, teas and coffees too. You also have the opportunity to enjoy a cocktail made to match your personality after a few quick questions from our bartender. We also have various promotions such as wine week (the last week of each month) whereby you receive a complimentary cheeseboard with every bottle of wine. How can followers keep up with the latest goings-on at the gallery? We have a mailing list, you can sign up via the website ‘outstandingartlimited.co.uk’, follow us on Instagram @_outstanding_art, or find us on Facebook. What do you hope to achieve with the gallery in the next 12 months? We are hoping to develop an exciting and varied events programme from comedy nights to artist workshops alongside our rolling exhibitions to create a fun and welcoming venue for all to enjoy. What would you say to those who ‘don’t know much about art’, but who may be interested in visiting the gallery? Although we operate as a commercial art gallery we believe it is for everyone to enjoy a creative atmosphere while they enjoy a drink.

George Orwell June: When one of literature’s genuine greats was born The 25th of this month would have been George Orwell’s 116th birthday. The British author, who died of tuberculosis, aged only 46, left a legacy in literature and popular culture that lives on today. Eccentricity and achievement in childhood Born Eric Arthur Blair into the notable class of sahibs in Bengal, Orwell’s father was a British official in the Indian Civil Service, while his mother was of French extraction. Despite excelling at school and winning scholarships to both Wellington and Eton, Orwell came to resent the attitude of the middle-class social status he was born into. An anarchic start to adulthood Opting not to attend university, Orwell initially joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, but resigned in 1928 to pursue his ambitions as a writer. He moved to the East End of London, living in cheap accommodation, and spent some time in the slums of Paris working in restaurants and hotels. By this time, he considered himself an anti-imperialist and anarchist, and then a socialist. Living what became the material for his 1933 book, Down and out in Paris and London, Orwell took the name we now know him as, and published his first full novel, Burmese Days, in 1934. A relentless writer by now, he published novels in 1935 (A Clergyman’s Daughter) and 1936 (Keep the Aspidistra Flying). Propaganda perfected during wartime Late in 1936, Orwell travelled to Spain to fight for the Republicans against Franco’s Nationalists, but eventually fled from Soviet-backed communists – leading him to become a lifelong anti-Stalinist. Between 1941 and 1943, he worked for the BBC after being rejected for military service. He also became the literary editor of Tribune, a left-wing socialist paper, but also frequently wrote film and literature reviews, essays and news articles. Post-war literary glory In 1944, Orwell finished writing Animal Farm, a political fable based on the story of the Russian Revolution and its

44 | IN&AROUND

betrayal by Joseph Stalin, although it took another year to find a publisher for the novel. But it was four years later – only one year before his death – when his most famous contribution to literature was published. In 1949, Nineteen Eighty-Four told the dystopian tale of totalitarian states, thought police and the brainwashing of society as told by Winston Smith. It was Orwell’s warning to the world of the power of surveillance, government and propaganda, following his experience of the twin menaces of Stalinism and Nazism during WWII. Orwell completed Nineteen Eighty-Four on the Hebridean island of Jura, in a remote house he had bought following the success of Animal Farm. Many years after his death in 1950, terms like ‘doublethink’ and ‘newspeak’ are still bywords for modern political abuses, while the title of reality TV show Big Brother is coined from the novel’s narrative; indelible marks of the author’s experience, vision and genius.

FILM REVIEW: THE

HUSTLE

On first approaching The Hustle, you might imagine that any attempt at a caper combining the not-inconsiderable talents of Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway as two ambitious female con artists would represent pretty decent comic value. This perception might persist even as you become aware of a premise that is effectively just a gender-swapped version of 1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which in turn was a remake of Bedtime Story from 1964. Sure, even in the late ‘80s, the notion of any film based on two men (Michael Caine and Steve Martin, you may remember) competing to swindle an American heiress out of tens of thousands of dollars on the Mediterranean coast was starting to look a little antiquated. However, sweeping cultural change in the West since then – we’re referring to a certain other ‘W’ word, Weinstein – would seemingly present plenty of scope for a sharply feminist reimagining of the classic tale. The female casting doesn’t translate into a sisterhood epic If you aren’t familiar with The Hustle’s aforementioned predecessors, you probably won’t detect the wealth of elements that, while they may appear on first inspection to be fresh, are actually just by-rote retellings of Scroundels, save for instances where change is forced by technological advances or the switched gender of the protagonists. Certain other things are even more resistant to change. Wilson is, once again, cast in the role of what the audience might be forgiven for thinking is the only type of Aussie she knows how to play – the brash one. As the film begins, we are already in on her character, Penny Rust’s encounter with her latest dupe, dropping into a bar to persuade a man to fork out for a medical procedure for her alluring “sister” whose photo she presumably just grabbed from Instagram. The somewhat more elegant woman Rust meets on a train, Josephine Chesterfield, en route to the French Riviera to seek more rich men

Unassuming escapism – but don’t expect anything else to swindle, at least gives Hathaway an opportunity to try out various fake accents and look svelte in clingy dresses, if little else. All of this leaves Thomas Westerburg – a clumsy billionaire app entrepreneur who the ladies designate as their target dupe as they compete with each other for the right to remain at the fictional resort of Beaumont-sur-Mer – as perhaps the movie’s most intriguing and likeable character, at least until the denouement. Unassuming escapism – but don’t expect anything else In short, it becomes apparent early on that The Hustle is not quite the relentlessly hilarious and acidic post-#MeToo revenge fantasy that even its poster implies it to be, with its line “They’re giving dirty rotten men a run for their money”. Even aside from the subject of the authenticity, or lack thereof, of the film’s feminist framing, certain elements simply make no sense, such as a training montage in which Josephine tasks Penny with, among other things, throwing knives at a target for no apparent reason. While, then, The Hustle may provide you with some satisfying summer escapism, such silliness and frivolity is where this missed opportunity of a flick’s ambitions start and end.

Places to go... WITH THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS RAILCARD TO THE FORTH BRIDGE

T

he Family and Friends Railcard (F&FR) includes friends because the children you travel with may not be your own. My children are all adults now, but It is possible to travel with someone else’s child (5-15) to get discount from the adult fare. To give a local example, on an offpeak journey from Yarm to Cramlington, the fare is £28.80. But with a child using the F&FR, the fare falls from an undiscounted adult and child fare of £43.20 to £24.50. In other words, it is cheaper to travel standard class with a child than without one. I have often thought there is a potential business in renting out children to save money on rail fares, but this is capable of misinterpretation. I therefore borrowed a family friend, 12 year old Daniel, to make a day trip to Scotland, and after some consultation on a trip to Edinburgh we decided to go a little beyond and try the boat trip in the Forth Estuary and Deep Sea World at North Queensferry, either side of the iconic red Forth Bridge. We had two advance tickets, out with Cross Country from Newcastle, returning with LNER. It’s perfectly legal to mix and match like that since the tickets are issued as two singles. We managed to get to and from the Scottish capital for under £20. A separate return to North Queensferry (£4.95, saving 85p), delivered us first to Dalmeny, a small station above but close to South Queensferry. We walked down the road into the small town, then east along the coastline towards the towering Forth Bridge to Hawes Pier, virtually beneath it, where our comfortable vessel the Forth Belle awaited for a trip to see the three bridges and Inchcolm Island. As it was out of season we could not land on the island, where the jetty was being repaired, but we saw plenty of bird and sea life, including seals lying on a navigation buoy. I had a Dalwhinnie Winter’s Gold whisky from the bar (following a previous visit there for this column) and Daniel enjoyed a cola. I must say the sound system on the boat was first class: a mixture of recorded material, with sensible use of sound effects,

www.inandaroundmag.co.uk | 52

and live commentary. We went under the two road bridges (opened 1964 and 2017), and the Forth Bridge (1890) with trains running across frequently. Daniel calculated it was 122 steps up to Dalmeny station, plus a further 14 up and 12 down, and we took a train over the bridge to North Queensferry, which was well signposted and all downhill to the Deep Sea World, an aquarium famous for its collection of large sand tiger sharks. Opened in 1993 in a disused quarry, its main attraction is the 112 m (367 ft) long transparent acrylic underwater viewing tunnel, which is one of the longest of its kind in the world. We were delighted to be offered a special visit behind the scenes to see how fish are propagated and look over the viewing tunnel. In 2005, the aquarium opened a new seal enclosure, housing resident seals as well as injured ones rescued by the SSPCA. Only buses run over the older road bridge now, so we made our way to the Ferrytoll park and ride (strange name: no ferry, no toll!) for a surreal ride on a solo Stagecoach express, where we were the only vehicle visible on the bridge, to Edinburgh and our train home. www.deepseaworld.com www.forthtours.com
